Book Signing - Fire It Up - 8/13

8/11/2011 08:15:00 PM 0 Responses
One of the only things that I don't like about living in the city (an apartment) is that I can't grill as often as I'd like to, or ever actually.  That's one of my favorite things to do in the summer.  And whereas, I usually just stick with steaks and burgers, being able to grill 'everything' does have a certain appeal.

Coming up this weekend is a book signing for "Fire It Up"

KitchenWares by Blackstones – located at 215 Newbury Street – will host cookbook authors Andrew Schloss and David Joachim for a book signing and cooking demonstration on Saturday, August 13th from noon to 2pm. They will be signing copies of their cookbook, Fire It Up: More than 400 Recipes for Grilling Everything.

..... and now I want steak, corn on the cob, and watermelon.

Tasti D-Lite Coming to Newbury Street in March

12/19/2010 11:37:00 PM 1 Response
I've never had Tasti D-Lite.  Anyone out there try it before and want to chime in on whether it's actually 'tasti' or not?  Our first location is going to be opening in the Spring and it's coming to Newbury Street.

There's no turning back now (we hope): Tasti will move into 205 Newbury Street in March, operated by an entrepreneurial husband-wife team based out of suburban Lancaster. But wait ... that's not all! There's also plans in the works to open three other Tasti branches in the area, too. The second location will open late next year. And, may we remind you, the treats only have about 80 calories and a mere three grams of fat. D-liteful.

Now that we've got Pinkberry, Red Mango, and the independents - Tasti is going to be in for some stiff competition.

Pinkberry Back Bay Opens in ~2 Weeks

10/14/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
No word yet on the exact opening date, but according to the  BBJ the Pinkberry on Newbury Street should be open by the end of the month.

Frozen yogurt chain Pinkberry is set to open its doors in the Back Bay neighborhood later this month, the company said on Wednesday.

Pinkberry, known for serving up tart flavors of frozen yogurt, will open at 286 Newbury Street, marking its second store in New England this year.

I know that they were StyleFixx event (here) last week, so I'm sure Pinkberry will be here sooner rather than later.

Click (here) to read the BBJ article.

UPDATE

According to Boston.com, Pinkberry is going to open on 10/29 (here)

Test out EA Sports Active - Starts 11/16

11/13/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses

For someone who was really, really into video games when I was a kid. I sure am a sorry excuse for a gamer nowadays. That whole pesky "work" thing just really puts a damper on things. Even when my beloved Street Fighter franchise came out with their latest rendition, I played it for about 3 weeks and then promptly stopped. I still love video games, I just don't have the time anymore. That being said, you can probably find me on Newbury St next week testing out the new EA Sports Active game just to see what it's all about.

On November 16th EA SPORTS Active will be just around the corner, transforming an empty space for one month into a pop-up training center. Come in and meet with knowledgeable EA SPORTS Active ambassadors, use EA SPORTS Active on the spot or borrow from the lending library and try it out at home. With customizable and personalized workout routines that can be performed from the comfort of home, it’s a simple, fun and cost-effective way to stay healthy during the holidays, making it the perfect gift for you, and anyone on your list.

EA SPORTS will convert an empty storefront at 156 Newbury Street in Boston into a free workout space.

Video games that make you healthy? What will they think of next. First Wii Fit, and now this. Maybe this is the key to that whole childhood obesity problem that our nation is suffering from. It sure beats m

y solution: one year of mandatory military service (boot camp) after high school. My rationale, if you have to run three miles a day for an entire year, you won't be obese.

Hotel Chocolat Coming Soon!

9/21/2009 12:03:00 AM 2 Responses
I don't eat a whole lot of chocolate. But when I have friends come to visit that do like chocolate, I always take them to Teuscher on Newbury for their champagne truffles. Those things are delicious. Coming soon, though, is some competition that I may need to check out.

Hotel Chocolat might sound like Willy Wonka’s vacation resort of choice, but don’t jump to conclusions from the name. We’re not talking about some kind of Hershey’s hostel, but rather, a luxury chocolatier set to open right here in our own little Bean. In five years, the UK-based brand has ballooned to 32 retail locations across the pond.

It even grows its own cocoa at its Caribbean plantation, the Rabot Estate, where its policy of “Engaged Ethics” protects the local environment and workers. And now it has chosen the Hub for its first two stateside stores — one at 141A Newbury Street (near the Dartmouth Street intersection) opening in late September and a second opening later this year at the Mall at Chestnut Hill.

These stores will also debut a new look for the chain — a sleek black-and-white motif conceived by designer Terry Moore — and the Newbury location has a tasting room for chocolate sampling.

Anyone want to do me a favor and swing by 141A Newbury Street and check out if it's open yet?

Click (here) to check out the Hotel Chocolat website.

PS. I checked out the site, they've got champagne truffles as well.

Puma's Latest Ad Campaign

8/25/2009 01:27:00 AM 0 Responses
Our friends at Puma are launching a new ad campaign featuring some of their employees as well as customers.

Everyone has something to say and PUMA® is giving you your very own platform to say it. This fall, PUMA lets employees take the lead showcasing some of their store associates and their thoughts in their newest retail campaign: PUMA Employees Only. But it doesn’t end there, PUMA will let their fans join in the fun, too, at select PUMA Stores across the US and online, inviting anyone to speak their mind!

PUMA will encourage shoppers and fans to share their thoughts. At the PUMA Stores in Boston (Newbury Street), shoppers will be able to grab their own poster board and marker and write their thoughts, which will be displayed throughout the week at the each PUMA Store. Everyone participating will be photographed, just like the employees in the campaign, which can then be uploaded instantly to their Facebook page. Every week, the PUMA Employee featured in the campaign will choose the best photo and saying in their store and the winner will receive a PUMA Gift.

I'm a big fan of Puma stuff, particularly their track jackets (their shoes are awesome too) . Methinks it's time to head over to the store and try my hand at winning that Puma gift.

Click (here) to visit their FB page.

Newbury Street Gets A New Website

8/17/2009 01:12:00 AM 2 Responses
For all the shoppers out there, there's a new way to keep up with what's going on on Newbury Street - a new website called The Newbury Line.

A joint venture between Taurus Investment Holdings and UrbanMeritage announce
the launching of The Newbury Line brand for their Back Bay holdings.

The Newbury Line website offers consumers the latest news about Newbury Street and the Newbury Line retailers, including a blog and the opportunity to follow The

Newbury Line on Twitter. “Our retailers will be offering special sale opportunities to our Twitter followers and residents of The Newbury Line apartments,” Mike Jammen, Principal of The Newbury Line comments.

I like the blog portion of the site. Just from the few entries they have so far, I've learned that there is now a Madewell and a 7 For All Mankind open on Newbury. It's been a while since I've gone for a stroll in that direction so it would have taken me longer to find that out.

I wish the Residential rentals section was built similar to the commercial rentals side and actually showed units rather than just asking me for my info so they can contact me. But other than that, nice site!

Review: The Barbershop Lounge is Awesome

7/01/2009 12:03:00 AM 1 Response
It's been quite some time since I've written about the Barbershop Lounge on Newbury Street. If you'll recall, last time it was to give away a $50 Gift Card to one lucky reader (here). The funniest part about that contest is that despite the Barbershop Lounge being geared towards men's grooming, most of the contest entrants were women ... women who had decided that their significant others needed a haircut.

Anyway, I swung by there today to check the place out for myself. I've been growing my hair out for the last 3 months because I wanted to get it long enough to try out a new hairstyle. So this morning, with a photo of who I wanted to look like loaded onto my iphone (see pic to the left), I headed over to the Barbershop Lounge.

The Lounge itself is very nice, it's got a modern feel (great fixtures) as well as plasma tv's and a pool table in the back while you wait.

Let me take a step back and describe my usual hair cutting experiences which consist of SuperCuts or a random place in chinatown where they don't speak english. Yes the haircuts are cheaper there, but I always left the place mumbling under my breath "at least it'll grow back in a couple of weeks."

My haircut this time around was awesome. Granted I still don't look like Andy Lau (see pic above) but at least I have his haircut.

I definitely recommend you check this place out the next time you need some grooming done. And if you're getting a haircut, ask for Anna. She was great.

KangaROOS Store on Newbury Street

6/29/2009 12:26:00 AM 1 Response
It seems like every time I walk down Newbury Street these days, another store has closed. But today was different, I was and saw something new that had opened: A KangaROOS Store!

Now, KangaROOS are near and dear to me because they are the first pair of shoes that I can actually remember wearing. They were dark blue and they had two velco straps, because I hadn't learned how to tie my shoes yet. They also gave me the ability to jump really high - or at least that's what I told myself.

There you have it. 292 Newbury Street. In talking to the sales girl, she said they just opened this past Friday and if I didn't hear wrong - it's also the first KangaROOS store in the U.S.

Shu Uemura "Lashion Show" - 6/18

6/17/2009 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
A long, long time ago, in a land far, far away (NYC), I had my one and only experience with fake eyelashes. It was my ex'es birthday and she insisted on getting some to wear to her birthday celebration. That being said, this event is for the ladies:

In celebration of shu uemura’s heritage in eyelashes and the 26th Anniversary of the first shu uemura boutique opening in Tokyo; the introduction of LASHES IN NATURE Collection, Tokyo Lash Bar 2009

As an expert in the art of false eyelashes, shu uemura’s Tokyo Lash Bar collections have established themselves as the hottest beauty staples in the world. For the Tokyo Lash Bar 2009 collection, shu uemura asked four makeup masters, Gina Brooke, Kakuyasu Uchiide, Yuji Asano, and Mina Matsumura to design eyelashes inspired by the elements of nature. The resulting LASHES IN NATURE collection features nine wearable masterpieces infused with inspiration from flowers, forests, oceans and the sky, creating the perfect balance of nature, science and art.

WHEN: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 6pm to 8pm

WHERE: shu uemura boutique 130 Newbury Street

Event is open to the public, but they MUST RSVP to the store to attend. To RSVP, call 617-247-3500.

Kiehl's Shave Cream Swap - 5/29

5/29/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
I think I pretty much own 75% of all the men's grooming products from Kiehl's. It's great stuff. One thing I havent' really had to use is the shaving cream - as an Asian guy, I don't have much facial hair - but if it's as good as their other products this promotion is worth checking out.

This summer, in celebration of our male customers and to lead up to Father’s Day, Kiehl’s is honored to launch Kiehl’s First Annual Shave Swap! For 10 days, May 29 through June 7, men are invited to trade in their shaving cream (at least a 4 oz.-size, please!) for one of our best-selling Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream formulas—a full 5 oz. tube! Each customer will also be asked to participate in a 5-minute personal consultation with a Kiehl’s Customer Representative, after which he will receive three samples of the Kiehl’s products best suited to his personal skin or hair needs.
Swap in Boston at:

112 Newbury St., Boston, 617-247-1777
Burlington Mall, 75 Middlesex Turnpike, Burlington, 781-221-0161

I actually have a tube of the brushless shave cream, I just haven't tried it out yet because my little electric razor pretty much does the trick for me at this point. It's probably a blessing, but sometimes I do wish I could grow a goatee or something.

Jason Hoffman @ Shu Uemura - 5/29

5/25/2009 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
I'm so far removed from the fashion world. I had no idea about the Matthew Williamson (who is he?) launch at H&M a couple weeks back and know even less about Jason Hoffman's upcoming visit to Boston, but I figure some of you might know and be interested in checking it out.

Just in time to share his tips and ideas for summer makeup, shu uemura Principal Makeup Artist Jason Hoffman will be making a personal appearance on Friday, May 29, at the shu uemura boutique on Newbury St.

Jason will be accompanied by members of shu uemura’s international artistry team, Rieko Ishizawa and Park Hae Jung, and will offer consultations, summer makeup tips and techniques, and demonstrate and preview shu uemura’s latest products, Painting Gel Liner, the Eternal Gold Collection, and Tokyo Lash Bar 2009, Lashes in Nature for consumers.

WHAT: Personal Appearance with Jason Hoffman, celebrity makeup artist

WHEN: Friday, May 29, 2009 from 10 AM to 5 PM (by appointment)
WHERE: shu uemura - 130 Newbury St.
HOW: Call to make an appointment: (617) 247-3500

My only encounter was several years ago, before the Newbury St. store opened. I spent way too much money on shu uemura lip gloss as a gift and had to then hand carry it back from Hong Kong. Two weeks later, the Newbury St. store opened and I was kicking myself.

The Boston Baked Bean

4/29/2009 01:13:00 AM 0 Responses
A couple of weeks ago, my friend Ann was in town for her first ever visit to Boston. On her last day here, we were strolling Faneuil Hall looking for Boston-themed souvenirs and didn't really find much besides some t-shirts. You know where we should have gone? The Boston Baked Bean aka Beantown Toys on Newbury St.

By pure chance, I got to meet with a couple of the folks from Beantown Toys today: their CEO Tom and their webmaster/toy designer Marc. Great guys, with a shop full of great Boston-themed stuff.

I've probably walked down Newbury St. hundreds of times, and this is the first time I've stopped in. It was fun in there. I highly recommend you check it out sometime especially if you've got kids and/or friends visiting from out of town.
