Boston Symphony Opening Night - 9/24

It's getting a bit chilly out nowadays, which is always unfortunate. But there's always one great thing about the coming of Fall - Opening Night for the Boston Symphony which is coming up this Wednesday - 9/24.

Under the baton of BSO Music Director James Levine, the Boston Symphony Orchestra opens its 2008-09 season with an all-Russian gala concert at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24, at Symphony Hall. Latvian soprano Maija Kovalevska, a rising star in the international classical music scene, makes her BSO debut singing the “Letter Scene” from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin in a program that also includes such Russian orchestral masterpieces as the Overture to Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila and Ravel’s orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.

Many thanks to Kathleen for the invitation to attend this event. I'm psyched because I was just thinking about looking for tix to the BSO as I sat on my twelve hour flight back from Tokyo to Detroit (just 1 of the 3 flights it took to get home) - while listening to my favorite Yo Yo Ma CD - the one where he plays the music of Ennio Morricone - best classical cd ever. I'll see you Wednesday!

And for those of you reading who'd like to go:

There are a limited number of $20 rush tickets available on Wednesday beginning at 4pm at the Symphony Hall box office.

PS. Did I mention I used to play the piano and cello - and so I love the symphony?

Kings of Leon Ticket Sale - 8/22

Sorry guys, I dropped the ball on the pre-sale for this concert. Although I find it kind of unfair to send me an email at 3:00pm saying that the pre-sale starts "now" and ends at 10pm. 24 hours notice would be nice.

Anway, I doubt the concert sold out since the pre-sale only lasted about seven hours - so you'll probably have a good chance when the public sale starts at 10am EST today.

Kings Of Leon with We Are Scientists, The Whigs
Wednesday, November 12, 2008
Orpheum Theatre
Doors: 6:00 pm | Show: 7:00 pm

Tickets go on sale today - Friday 10am EST.

Death Cab For Cutie Tix On Sale - 8/23

First the bad news. I went to the Death Cab concert last year and honestly they weren't very good live. I was pretty surprised considering how much I like their album.

Anyway, on to the good news. They're coming back in October and I'm willing to give them a chance to redeem themselves.

They'll be performing at Agganis Arena on Fri, Oct 3, 2008 at 7:30 PM.

Tickets go on sale this Saturday - 8/23 at 10am EST.

So for those that are interested, be sure to remember to wake up on Saturday morning. I'll see you at the concert.

Paul Van Dyk at Marina Beach Club - 9/12

Paul Van Dyk is one of my favorite trance DJ's. I'd have to put him down as #2 - the number one spot is reserved for DJ Tiesto - but he's a close second. Anyhoo, he usually comes to Boston once a year or so for a concert and this year he's going to be at the Marina Beach Club on 9/12.

Click (here) to pick up your advance tickets. As for me, I only have one friend that goes to trance concerts with me (perhaps I need more friends?), so it's time to email my buddy Rouz and see if he's free that weekend.

See you guys there!

Tribute to James Brown Tonight - 8/20

Happy Hump Day Everyone! I can say with absolute certainty that I will not be doing anything tonight. I've had late nights and early mornings every day this week so far and I'm ready to pass out. Tonight's plan will be: run 4.5 miles after work, eat dinner, veg out in front of the tv, then go to bed early.

But, for those of you that are looking for something to do, here's what I'd recommend. There's going to be a Tribute to James Brown concert tonight at the MFA.

To celebrate the legacy of the Godfather of Funk, James Brown, the legendary Pee Wee Ellis (Van Morrison's sax) and Fred Wesley (Funk trombonist extraordinaire of Ray Charles and Van Morrison) have formed a pan-continental soul/funk supergroup.

This incredible lineup includes JB Horns alumni, and special guests Cheikh Lo (from Senegal) and Vieux Farka Toure (Malian singer/guitarist). Who: James Brown Tribute, Cheikh Lo, Vieux Farka Toure
Where: The Museum of Fine Art: Calderwood Courtyard, Boston MA When: Two concerts: August 20th at 6:30pm and 9:00pm

Have a good time tonight kids. This old man needs a nap.

Click (here) for more info on the concert.

2nd Coldplay Concert Ticket Sale - 8/15

A few weeks ago, my friend kchev mentioned that he wished he had known when Coldplay tickets went on sale for their original concert. If he had read this blog *cough* *cough* he would have known about it (here). But anyway, I made it a point to email him about this new second show that was just added - because I'm nice like that.

Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" North American Tour will return to the TD Banknorth Garden for a second show this fall - October 29, 2008 at 7:30 PM.

Tickets go on sale at 10am EST Friday morning 8/15.

Click (here) to go to the Ticketmaster site.

PS. To kchev, please dont' forget about me when Google buys your startup company for billions of dollars.

Funky Bunch Comeback Tour?

Remember when Mark Wahlberg went by Marky Mark? Seems like a lifetime ago. Well, according to the Globe, the Funky Bunch is going to try to make a comeback.

New Kids on the Block aren't the only Boston boys making a comeback. The Funky Bunch, whose droopy-jeaned frontman is the A-list actor known as Mark Wahlberg, are also reuniting and, with any luck, will be playing a few dates this fall with NKOTB.

"The goal is to drop our single and get on tour," said Scott Ross, who's back with original FBers Hector Barros and Terry Yancey. "We're bringing 1990 back." (In fact, it was 1991 when the band had its first and last No. 1 hit "Good Vibrations.") Ross said Wahlberg, a.k.a. Marky Mark, has a hand in the reunion, but he's staying strictly behind the scenes.

The new single, called "Let's Party," sounds like the old stuff, but updated. "It's more Timbaland-ish, if that makes sense," he said, "more club-ish." The band is shooting a video for the song this weekend, and getting ready to take its show on the road. "We're older dudes now," said Ross. "But we still got it."

It's not really a reunion if Mark Wahlberg doesn't perform too, right? But, he's probably too busy with Entourage - speaking of which I just said the commercial for the new season yesterday - it's going to be awesome.

Official Bret Michaels After Party - 8/7

Ever have one of those dreams where you're running around and everything is going wrong and you're all stressed out - and then you wake up and you don't feel rested at all? That's what last night was like. ugh.

Anyhoo, Poison is playing tonight at the Bank of America Pavillion and the Hard Rock Cafe is hosting the official after-party. According to the metro, Bret Michaels will be in attendance for the after-party.

I've seen a few commercials for Rock of Love (his reality show) and if tonight's after party is even half as crazy as an episode of that show, you're gonna want to be there to watch.

The party starts at 11pm.

Jordin Sparks Concert Tix On Sale Now - 8/20

Jordin Sparks is touring with Jesse McCartney and they're coming to the Lowell Memorial Auditorium on Wednesday, August 20th.

You know Jordin Sparks, she sings that popular song with Chris Brown about not having any air to breathe and what not. I don't know anything about Jesse McCartney - I've heard his name before but that's about it.

For the teeny boppers out there and parents of teeny boppers, tickets went on sale 5 minutes ago.

Gnarls Barkley Tickets On Sale 7/12 at 10am

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind. I think it was from listening to Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" too many times last year. But hey, why not hear it one more time - in person!

Gnarls Barkely is coming to Boston to perform at the Wilbur Theatre on Wednesday, August 6th and tickets go on sale Saturday 7/12 at 10am EST.

Anyhoo, according to Ticketmaster they're all $25. That means usually means one of two things. One - it's a standing room only concert so the tickets are general admission tickets. Two - it's a seated concert, but those who buy early get good seats and those who buy late pay the same amount of $ for crappier seats.

I can't remember the last time I went to the Wilbur Theatre for a concert (or if I ever have) so I'm not sure which of the options it is. But if you want tickets, get them while they're hot.

DJ Tiesto @ The Estate - 6/18 & 6/19

My favorite DJ is going to be in town this week for an unprecedented appearance - two concerts. He usually does maybe one a year max in Boston. This time he's going to do two shows, one on 6/18 and one on 6/19. This is part of his In Search of Sunrise '08 tour. Personally, I love his In Search of Sunrise series - but none of them have been as good as ISOS2 and ISOS3.

Anyhoo, tickets are already sold out for the 6/19 concert, so if you want to go tickets are still available for 6/18 but get them quick. I bet that one will sell out too.

Click (here) to get your tickets.

PS. Mad props to The Estate. They've done a really great job this year of hosting some pretty awesome events.

Sarah Brightman Pre-Sale Password - 11/24

The pre-sale for Sarah Brightman concert tickets just started an hour ago at 10am EST today. Here's what they have to say about her.

In a genre-defying music career, Sarah Brightman has established herself as the world's most outstanding soprano of all time. Brightman effortlessly transcends and blends musical styles from pop, rock, and Broadway show-stoppers, to operatic and classical arias, while captivating audiences around the globe with her exquisite voice and electrifying stage presence.

Ms. Brightman will be performing at the TD Banknorth Garden on Monday, November 24th. I don't even want to think that far ahead - I'm still basking in the warm weather (aka head wave) - and I don't want to think about the cold just yet.

The pre-sale password is: METRO

Coldplay Tickets On Sale Tomorrow - 6/14

I'm hoping that some good concerts start coming to Boston soon. Most of the ones I went to happened in April-May (Jay-Z, Kanye, The Cure, etc), now I don't have any tickets sitting in the queue except for the new Cirque Du Soleil show in September.

That being said, tickets go on sale tomorrow, Saturday 6/14 at 10am EST for the upcoming Coldplay concert. They will be performing at the TD Banknorth Garden on Monday Aug 4 at 7:30 PM.

Click (here) to to the Ticketmaster site.

Just remember, don't reload the webpage too many times waiting for 10am to hit. Otherwise they'll block you for like ten minutes thinking you're one of those automated programs that ticket brokers use. That happened to me with the Kanye West concert. I ended up with worse tickets because I got locked out temporarily from the website.
