Back Bay Apple Store Opens Tomorrow - 5/15

Over this past Christmas, I became an Apple customer. I got myself a new ipod nano and also an iphone. Now, while I'm in the process of needing to purchase a new laptop, and several of my friends are trying to convince me to get a Mac - which I'm iffy about but am willing to consider.

Things will become much easier to consider starting tomorrow, Thursday 5/15, when the new Back Bay Apple store opens. Normally, I'd have to drive over to Cambridgeside and pay $1.99 for my hour of parking just to check things out at the store. Now I'll be able to walk there to the Back Bay store and loiter as long as I want - much more convenient.

The much debated, highly anticipated, three-story glass facade building at 815 Boylston St. will open to the public on Thursday evening, making it Apple's largest retail venture in the United States. The Back Bay shop will feature oodles of gadgets, including 64 iPod music and video players, 104 Mac laptops and computers, and a third floor dedicated entirely to service that can accommodate 100 customers receiving one-on-one training at the same time.

Can you believe it's almost been a year since the Beantown Bloggery launched? My first post was made on May 22, 2007. The year has gone by pretty quickly. And in celebration of my blog's first birthday, I am going to hold a giveaway contest for you guys.

The Rock and Blues Cruise of '07 took place just a few months after I had launched the Beantown Bloggery (here). Now, it's coming back for their 4th season (and my 2nd). Looks like they have another great line up this year.

Bride Wars Filming In The Alley - 5/14

I snapped a couple of shots on the way home from work yesterday, it looks like Bride Wars was shooting in the Alley (most likely at The Estate) last night. There were trucks parked all alongside Boylston in the surrounding area.

Rumor: Tom Brady & Gisele Plan A Party?

Who needs Perez Hilton, when all I really need is the "Names" section of the Boston Globe. Here's the latest rumor involving the quarterback and the supermodel:

We're not buying those rumors of wedding bells, but something's up with Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen. We're told the Pats QB and his Brazilian beauty are planning a big - and we mean big - party at the supermodel's surfside Costa Rican compound next month. Word is both Brady and Bundchen's families will be there. Hmm.

Who's got a theory on what they could be celebrating if it's not a wedding? Next month would be June ... which is a month too early for Gisele's birthday (July 20th). What other type of celebration would call for flying in both sets of families?

Many thanks to Reader MS9 for leaving a comment and reporting back on Salma Hayek's appearance at the ICA to christen the new Puma Racing Boat - the Il Mostro (here).

Here's what the Globe had to say about the event:

Leaving little time for anything but smashing a bottle of Taittingers to christen Puma's new racing boat the Il Mostro, actress Salma Hayek breezed into town yesterday to help the Boston-based shoe and apparel company launch the vessel's racing season. But it wasn't easy. Hayek, who is engaged to Francois-Henri Pinault, CEO of the French conglomerate PPR, parent company of Puma and Gucci, needed five tries - and the help of crew member Jerry Kirby of Newport, R.I., on the final attempt - to break the bottle. "I hope I didn't break the boat," said the "Frida" actress and "Ugly Betty" producer, who made the day-trip to Boston alone to give the black, white, and red vessel a proper send-off while it was docked behind the Institute of Contemporary Art. (Puma threw a swank party for 300 guests in the ICA afterward.) Skipper Ken Read and his crew will compete in the round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race.

Mike Lowell Book Signings - 5/15 & 5/18

Red Sox player Mike Lowell has a new book coming out called Deep Drive and he's going to be out and about over the next few days doing book signings. The first is going to be at the Barnes and Nobles at the Prudential Center. The second will be a launch party at The Estate

The Barnes & Nobles signing well take place on Thursday, 5/15 at 6pm. But here's the important part. They're going to pass out wristbands at 2pm that day. You can only get your book signed if you have a wristband. So go EARLY! Also, like usual, he will only be signing copies of the book - the sign says no sports memorabilia. The 2nd event is going to be on Sunday 5/18 and is being held at The Estate. According to the flyer on their website, there's a VIP Party from 7-8pm (tickets are $100) which includes a signed book and then general admission to the launch party is from 8pm to midnight (tickets are $40). The fine print for the general admission says that it includes a book - but it doesn't mention if you'll be able to get it signed or not.

Madonna Pre-sale For Citibank Members - TODAY

Occasionally, American Express has pre-sales for concerts and now Citibank is jumping on the bandwagon. Starting today (5/13) at 10am those of you that have a Citibank credit card can purchase presale tickets to Madonna's upcoming tour.

The concert is going to be held at the TD Banknorth Garden on Wednesday, Oct 15, 2008.

Has anyone gotten her new album yet? Is it good? I haven't heard any of her new songs and I'm not really much of a fan of her old stuff either so I think I'll be passing on this one.

General Public sale for tickets doesn't start until 5/17. By then I'm sure all the scalpers will have maxed out their Citibank cards. Time to start looking for friends with those handy dandy Citibank cards.

Dunkin Donuts Commercial Filming - 5/11

Just before I went to catch the 1pm David Copperfield performance yesterday, I was roaming around the downtown area in search of lunch. When I got to Liberty Square, I noticed there was a small set setup and it looked like they were going to film something. I wanted to stop and inquire about what was going on, but didn't want to be late for the show.

After the show, I decided to head back and see if they were still there. As luck would have it, the filming was in full swing. I was pretty psyched and when I asked which movie they were filming, one of the folks responded "It's a new Dunkin Donut's commercial."

Ok so not as cool as if it was The Surrogates, but still neat to see them filming something. So be on the lookout for a commercial that seems to go like this: there's a business man and business woman walking down a sidewalk with a bunch of waiters and waitresses surrounding them handing them menus and other restaurant-related gear.

Anonymous @ Copley Square - 5/10

Anonymous was out and about in Copley Square again this weekend. I first mentioned them back in February when I was walking past the area (here). This time, I stopped to snap a few pictures of the gathering and also speak with one of the Anonymous members there.

Their goal is to protest Scientology and raise awareness about the "crimes of the Church of Scientology." I put it in quotes because I haven't had time to read through their website, and form an opinion on the matter. Here is an excerpt from their website:

Most of us only know of Scientology in passing - something for celebrities. The truth is that Scientology is a very real and very dangerous corporation. We are NOT here to judge their members' beliefs, rather to inform the public about The Church of Scientology's many crimes against humanity.

Review: David Copperfield Is Amazing

David Copperfield was in town this past weekend to do a few performances at the Opera House. I had the pleasure of going to his Sunday afternoon performance yesterday and it was amazing. It's the first time I've ever seen a magic show in person and I found it to be highly entertaining.

I still can't figure out how he made a full sized Lincoln Convertible appear on stage out of nowhere. I was sitting pretty close to the front of the stage and was doing my best to peel back my eyelids so I didn't blink and I still couldn't see where it came from. Logic tells me the car had to have been there the entire time - but I just can't figure out how. Those crazy illusions - so neat.

The highlight of the show was the fact that I was chosen at one point to be an audience participant in one of the tricks. I got to be up on stage with David Copperfield! It was awesome. I wish I could have gotten a picture with him, but alas I was not able to.

If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend you check out one of his shows. According to his tour schedule, he'll be in Providence tomorrow evening and then do a brief stint in NY and PA and then it's back to Vegas.

Mall Cop Filming @ South Shore Plaza

This just in from Bloggery reader Elaine:

Just thought I'd tip you off, Mall Cop will be filming at South Shore Plaza in the next few weeks - though mostly after the mall closes. They already have the holiday decorations up on the first floor near Filene's Basment and the Apple Store, also Victoria's Secret has some temporary displays for the movie as well. The escalators and elevator near this area will be out of service during the weeks they are filming.

And just a brief spoiler about the ending of Mall Cop courtesy of the Boston Globe:

Word from the set of "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" is that the Kevin James comedy ends with a wedding scene that was filmed at (wait for it) the Burlington Mall's food court.

More Movies = More Demand For Extras

Good news for all of the folks out there that have been trying to break into showbiz via gigs as extras in all the movies that are being shot locally. A cover story in the Movies section of the Globe today has basically confirmed that all these movie filmings have increased demand for extras substantially.

All of those projects require extras. In the case of "Mall Cop," Boston Casting's Angela Peri has been signing up as many as 250 new extras a day to fill out scenes in food courts and stores. (Filming has moved from the Burlington Mall to the South Shore Plaza, so she'll have to create a whole new pool to draw from.

"I've had some of my savvy extras, as I call them, the regulars, turn me down because they are booked," said Peri. "You could make a full-time job out of extras work now and it's been a long time in coming.

That's pretty good news for all the aspiring actors. The ability to make a full-time job out of extra work seems like it would be a pretty big deal. And how's the quality of the extras here in New England?

"Two films, 'The Proposal' and 'This Side of the Truth' have told us that our pool of background actors is the best they've worked with on either the East Coast or the West Coast," she said.

My Afternoon WIth Joanne Chang

Ok, so I didn't actually spend my afternoon with Joanne Chang herself, but I decided this morning to wander over to the South End and check out her two restaurants.

First, I swung by Meyers + Chang to have lunch. The restaurant struck me as a little bit like P.F. Chang's but more laid back and a little edgier. Meyers + Chang is an Asian fusion restaurant that seems to have elements of Chinese and Vietnamese influence in its dishes.

I asked the waitress what she recommended and unfortunately everything she named had pork in it (I don't eat pork) but I settled on three dishes that looked pretty good. A green papaya slaw appetizer ($5), the dan dan noodle salad ($8), and the rainbow beef ($13).

The papaya slaw was a little lacking. I couldn't quite place it, but there was something missing. Some flavor was missing so it didn't taste quite right. I regularly eat the papaya salad at Xinh Xinh in chinatown, it's spectacular there. The dan dan nooldle salad was quite refreshing. It resembles the cold noodles you can get in chinatown with a few additions: romaine lettuce, slices of celery, and some cilantro. I've never had noodles with lettuce, the crispness of the vegetables added to the dish - I was pleasantly surprised. Lastly the rainbow beef was essentially beef stir fried with red, yellow, and green bell peppers. It also had good flavor. Be sure you like bell peppers though if you plan on ordering this dish - it comprises about 80% of the dish.

After lunch, I continued my trek down Washington Street to get over to Flour, Ms. Chang's bakery. I had walked past it a few times before but it was so packed that I didn't bother to go in. This time I went in. I asked what was most popular and was told to try the sticky buns. So I had a sticky bun and a slice of banana bread.

The banana bread was moist and full of walnuts and delicious, delicious banana flavor. The sticky bun was also superb. Chewy and sweet, smothered in caramel and toasted pecans. I think I gained a few pounds just over lunch. But, it was so worth it.

My hat goes off to Chef Chang. The food at both of her establishments was delicious.

Esquire's List of America's Best Bars 2008

After this month's issue of Esquire, I'm leaning towards never taking their suggestions anymore. Their June issue has a feature called 'Best Bars In America 2008' and in my humble opinion, the ones they chose for MA are crap. I'm sure that each of these bars will have their regulars - who will subsequently leave nasty comments for me here - but come on Best in America??

Also, for some odd reason, the bars on their website don't match the ones in print. Not sure how that happened - but someone over their needs to get it gear.

So without further ado the bars that Esquire chose to basically be the best in MA:

1. People's Republik - I used to live in Central Square across the street from this bar and I still wouldn't go there to grab a drink. Funny story, one of my friends once kicked a guy in the head at the People's Republik doing a cartwheel inside the bar.

2. Eastern Standard - In Kenmore Square. I had brunch there when it first opened a year or two ago. The food was terrible. Perhaps their drinks are good, but when your food is so bad that I can't bring myself to finish my meal (I try very hard not to waste food), you're on my sh*t list. If it were me, I'd wander next door and go to Foundation Lounge.

3. Beachcomber - In Wellfleet, MA. I haven't been to this bar before so I'll reserve judgement. I haven't made it to that area of Cape Cod yet. But hopefully one day I will - I'm a big fan of oysters.

List of Movies Added to Site

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let those of you that read this blog via email or RSS that I've added a new widget to the upper left hand side of the blog that provides links all the movies that currently being filmed in the area. Hopefully that will make the information a little bit more accessible.

My end goal is to create a bulletin board or forum section for this site that will allow everyone to post their celebrity sightings and/or questions (amongst other topics) in a more organized fashion than just leaving comments. But unfortunately, I was a biology major in college and my web skills are a little lacking.

I am working on it though, so stay tuned. I'll make it happen one of these days.

In the meantime, I'll use the new links section as a landing page for each movie that will subsequently hold links to any other blog postings that I make about the movies - like a table of contents of some sort.

Let me know if you have any comments or suggestions on how you'd like the data to be organized.

Harvard Square Celebrates MayFair - 5/11

I'm not sure what the event organizers were thinking when they did this, but who knows - maybe there's a lot of folks out there who don't plan on spending Mother's Day with their mothers. Or perhaps there are a lot of mothers out there that would like to go to Harvard Square this Sunday and listen to some live music.

The 25th Annual MayFair has been rescheduled and will be taking place this upcoming Sunday, May 11th in Harvard Square. The event features "six stages of LIVE entertainment, 30+ Restaurant Vendors, hundreds of Street Vendors selling artwork, jewelry, vintage clothing, neighborhood sidewalk sales."

Huge Car Accident & Explosion In Allston

A huge accident took place about three hours ago in Packard's Corner at the intersection of Comm Ave and Brighton Ave. At around 7am, a medical delivery truck plowed through at least seven cars on Comm Ave before hitting another car head on and causing an explosion.

Obviously if you need to drive in that direction, traffic is going to be a mess. I'm not sure if they've cleaned it up yet but if you were planning on going down in that direction - cancel your trip.

Comm. Ave outbound has been closed to traffic in the area.

Green B Line trolley service between Babcock and Blandford Streets is suspended. The MBTA is busing between Blandford Street and Brighton Avenue.

Bye Bye Dainty Dot Building

Well it looks like the developer and the city have reached an agreement on what's going to happen to the Dainty Dot building in Chinatown. There were some objections to the original plan where critics didn't want such a tall building to be built.

Anyway, an agreement was reached yesterday to lower the overall height of the building but a consequence of this agreement is that they're now going to be tearing down the original and starting from scratch. The original proposal involved saving part of the original building and adding on to it.

A compromise reached between City Hall and developers of a planned 299-foot-tall residential tower in Chinatown will reduce the height by 34 feet, but means elimination of the revered Dainty Dot building on the site.

Matt Light sure does like to do appearances at retail stores. Or maybe it's just my imagination. He did one about 6 months ago (here) and now he's got another one coming up tomorrow.

The event starts at 5:30pm on May 8th.
