I was talking to a buddy of mine in venture capital a little while ago.  He was telling me about a classmate of his from business school that started a blog a few years ago, spent a lot of time/resources building it up and now has revenues of over a million dollars a year.  Compare that to the twelve bucks a year I make off this site, and it got me thinking.  What could I do to monetize this site more?  Rephrase:  What could I do to monetize this site more while not completely selling out and pissing off my readers too much?

One thought was selling Beantown Bloggery merchandise.  But then I figured I'd need a cute animated mascot to put on mugs and t-shirts.  And then I realized I'd need some sort of way to charge you guys money in exchange for such merchandise.  Enter the folks at 1shoppingcart.com.  They emailed me recently and asked me to review their site.  Here's a little bit about them:

Chinglish Opening Soon @ Lyric Stage

I've read good things about Chinglish.  And in a previous life, I used to do a lot of business in China, so I can definitely relate.  Chinglish opens later this week for about a month:  November 30 – December 23 at the Lyric Stage Company of Boston

MIT Senior Wins Year's Worth of UBurger

Congratulations to MIT senior Neha Hebbar!  You are a winner!  What are you going to do with a year's supply of burgers and fries?!?  That's a lot of burger.  If it were me, I think maybe I'd have one a week and give the rest to the homeless.    

In a battle for the ages, a management science major at MIT pulled out an incredible upset victory over a Boston University junior in the first annual FreshBurger contest. With the spoils of victory, Neha Hebbar wins a year’s supply of burgers and fries from Boston’s best burger joint, named “Top Burger” by the ‘Boston A List’ and #1 by Boston.com’s “Best Burgers In Boston” ranking. 

Hebbar bested the competition in a contest that drew close to 2,000 votes, the MIT student won by less than 20 votes over the BU student in a competition so heated that the pair were separated by two votes with less than three hours left in the contest. This despite BU’s proximity to two UBurger locations!

Boston Ballet 2012-2013 Season

Apologies, I'm a couple weeks late in posting this.  I was traveling for 3 weeks, then lost power for a week.  Bloggery media rep DanDan checked out the Boston Ballet's new Fall program a couple weeks ago and here's what he had to say:

With The Nutcracker season just around the corner, I had ballet on the brain.  So, when I found out that the 2012-2013 season of the Boston Ballet opened last week, I jumped at the opportunity to check out their Fall Program.  The Fall Program consists of three pieces, with intermissions between each, that are each very modern--not at all your standard "ballet".  All were fun and inventive but the first, Rooster, was definitely my favorite and set a tone for the night.  

Christopher Bruce’s Rooster is set to music by The Rolling Stones and is both fun and aggressive, irreverent yet politically active.  The Fall Program's fun and fast pace keeps anything from getting boring (and I was on three nights of four hour sleep, so the fact that I stayed awake in any darkened room was quite a testament to the shows).  With tickets starting as low as $29, and four shows left this week, I would definitely recommend checking it out.

From Savory to Sweet - 11/14

Brian Mercury, Pastry Chef, Harvest, takes us on a tour from Savory to Sweet at the November 14 Dessert tasting as part of the restaurant's popular Harvest Review series. Mercury is known for sourcing his own local sea salt, and admits to a craving for all things chocolate. But first he shares with us some of his favorite combinations of sweet and savory before the final course of Donut Espuma, Coffee & Chocolate Cremeux, Cocoa Nib Streusel. It is worth the wait!

Mercury starts with a Citrus course, keeping it bright and light. He jumps into Savory at the second course, with hearty, earthy ingredients, and then takes a turn with local Cheese and home-made Jasmine Kombucha Sorbet before heading into a dessert course he simply calls Fall. "Squash is a surprise - you don't think of it as a dessert. But when paired with pumpkin and maple syrup you have a dessert that showcases Fall beautifully" explains Mercury. Then of course, it is time for coffee and chocolate.

Earl Of Sandwich Opens Tomorrow - 11/12

The City of Boston and Boston Common welcome Earl of Sandwich, created by the direct descendent of John Montagu, the Earl who invented the sandwich in 1762. Earl of Sandwich will have a grand opening on Monday, November 12th.

Mayor Thomas Menino has been looking forward to the grand opening, “We are grateful to the Earl of Sandwich for stepping forward to renovate the vacant building on the Boston Common for reuse as a casual dining attraction.  We are pleased that this structure in our historic park is being preserved and expect that the new business will bring hungry customers and positive activity to one of the most visited destinations in our city.”

“We are looking forward to the grand opening of our newest location on the historic Boston Common. As we celebrate 250 years of the sandwich, there is no better location for us than inside the country's oldest city park. It is an honor to be here,” said Robert Earl, chairman of Earl of Sandwich.  “The success we’ve experienced at our other 22 locations has proven that the quality of our food and dining experience will bring guests back time and time again.”

The new location will feature signature hot sandwiches including The Original 1762, a sandwich of freshly roasted beef, sharp cheddar and creamy horseradish sauce all on freshly baked artisan bread.

JP's Winter Farmers Market - 11/10

Jamaica Plain, home to three summer farmers markets, multiple Community Supported Agriculture and two Community Supported Fishery sites, and hundreds of backyard and community gardens, will soon have its first winter farmers market.

TheEgleston Farmers Market will launch on November 10, 11am-2pm, at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Hall, 45 Brookside Avenue, close to the Brewery and the Stony Brook T stop.  The market will be held twice a month in November and December (November 10 & 17, December 8 & 15) and weekly in January and February, 2013.
Here are some of the products that vendors plan to provide: Buckle Farms (owned by JP residents Jim & Wendy Buckle): chard, kale, microgreens, potatoes, squash, eggs, honey and more

Foxboro Cheese Company: Spreadable and aged cheeses

Great Cape Baking Company: Challah, whole wheat bread, cookies, seasonal breads, and hand cut donuts

John Crow Farm: Pasture-raised meats, eggs and greenhouse-grown produce (which may include tomatoes if we’re lucky)

Mei-Mei Street Kitchen food truck: Creative and locally-sourced Chinese-American fare

Seta's Mediterranean: Grape leaves, falafel, and salads using locally-sourced ingredients

Stillmans at the Turkey Farm: pasture raised beef, lamb, pork and chicken, as well as some breads

Stillmans Farm: Brussels sprouts, onions, apples, pears, celeriac, kohlrabi and more

The Cupcakory: Cupcakes baked at JP’s Crop Circle Kitchen

USA Palooza - 11/8

I miss the start up world sometimes.  

Usa-Palooza is happening next Thursday (11/8), and is being put on by Pearson, Alleyoop, and EdTechUp. It's an event for designers in the Boston area to attend to chat about job opportunities, UX, UI, and Graphic Design. Plus, there are free drinks! Thought this would be relevant for some of your readers, especially those designers looking to join some cool startups.

You do UX, your friends do UX. Come join other people who do UX and talk about what matters most. November 8th is World Usability Day, which is as good excuse as any to have a party and enjoy a free drink on us.
