Have a Drink & Help the Ellie Fund

10/24/2012 08:38:00 PM 0 Responses
True story, I went to a new sushi restaurant last night.  The waitress asked me what I'd like to drink and I said, "I'll have whatever you think I'll enjoy."  She brought me a lychee martini.  I was expecting some sort of whiskey in glass with perhaps a cube or two of ice.  But apparently, I look like a lychee martini drinker.

That being said, I can't remember the last time I had a pink drink.  But for you guys at the Ellie Fund, it looks like I will.  Any recommendations?  I'm not even sure where to begin.

Drink Pink and We’ll Donate $5: City Table, both City Bar locations and Anthem Kitchen + Bar will be participating once again in the Ellie Fund’s Do Good campaign to raise money for breast cancer support during October. When you visit one of the locations this month and order a pink cocktail, snap a photo and post it to the restaurant’s Facebook page. We’ll donate $5 for each photo and you’ll automatically be entered to win dinner for two! City Table on Facebook | City Bar on Facebook | Anthem Kitchen + Bar on Facebook

City Bar at the Lenox Turns 10 with the City Bar 10 cocktail: For $10 enjoy the specially crafted anniversary drink with Double Cross Vodka, honey, lemon juice and Creole Shrub orange liqueur. Proceeds from sales also benefit The Ellie Fund!

10 Best Beer Cities in the World: Boston

10/17/2012 06:35:00 PM 0 Responses
So, USA Today released an article a few days ago about the top 10 Best Beer Cities in the World, and it looks like we made the cut!  We share the honor with these other great beer cities:  Munich, Denver, Montreal, Amsterdam, Milwaukee, Dublin, Portland, Brussells, and Prague.  Here's what they had to say about Boston:

Boston

What to See: Beantown is the home of the Samuel Adams brewery, named after the American revolutionary and malt producer. Take a $2 tour, during which you can smell hops, taste malts, and sample some seasonal suds. The smaller Harpoon Brewery has tastings and tours, as well as Boston's annual Harpoon Octoberfest, a festival celebrating beer, music, and New England fall foliage. Oh, and keg bowling.

Where to Drink: Fight the Boston University students for a seat at Deep Ellum or Sunset Grill & Tap; both curate lengthy, highbrow beer lists and employ servers with sommelier-like skills. Boston Beer Works features a winning, seasonal selection of homebrewed drafts named after Boston landmarks, including Bunker Hill Blueberry Ale and Fenway American Pale Ale.

Congrats to everyone mentioned.  Thanks for making us awesome.  I have a soft spot for Deep Ellum (I grew up in Dallas) and Sunset Grill (one of my personal faves for beer)

Will We Legalize Medical Marijuana?

10/10/2012 08:34:00 PM 1 Response
Confession time.  I'm really, really, really NOT into politics.  And I know, if I don't vote, then I can't complain.  Therefore, I don't complain.  I did get an email recently, though, letting me know that there is a vote coming up to legalize medical marijuana.

I find that interesting.  I still remember when we couldn't buy alcohol on Sundays.  Now we're legalizing medical marijuana?  Look how progressive we've become.

If Massachusetts voters approve Question 3 on the November ballot, the state will permit up to 35 nonprofit “medical marijuana treatment centers” around the state. Those centers will be allowed to sell a 60-day supply of pot to anyone with a doctor’s note that’s been approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. (The ballot question leaves it to the Department of Public Health to define what constitutes a 60-day supply.) Patients with a financial hardship or without access to a dispensary may also be allowed to grow an equivalent amount of pot.

Medical marijuana has been overwhelmingly popular with American voters since California put up the first citizens’ ballot, in 1996. In all, 17 states and the District of Columbia have legalized the drug for medicinal use....

Boston Magazine has an article on this for those of you who are interested.  I made it through the first three pages before my A.D.D. kicked in and I lost interest.  I'm not a smoker, so It doesn't really affect me.  That is until I get diagnosed with glaucoma, I suppose.

Awwww NECN, flattery will get you everywhere.  Of course I'll get a post up for you.  Who's free on Tuesday?  I head to Miami for the RMA (any financey people reading?) but I'd try to swing by if i were around.

On Tuesday, October 9th at 11am, NECN will be relaunching an all new TV Diner for the Fall. Billy Costa and Jenny Johnson are taping the first episode of a brand new season at Faneuil Hall's South Marketplace and we're looking to get a large crowd to be a part of the show! We were wondering if you guys could help promote the upcoming taping through a blog post, Tweet or Facebook post. With your large community, even just one would help out a great deal.

The Hartford Auto Insurance

10/07/2012 08:27:00 PM 0 Responses
About a year and a half ago, I sold my Denali.  I cried a little.  But, it just made no sense to have a car in the city.  I drove it maybe once a week .... to go to Costco and buy way more food in bulk than a single guy should (who doesn't need a 20lb crate of oranges?) and it was costing me a ton of money.  $400 a month in car payments.  I think about $350 in monthly parking downtown.  And then I think about $100-150 bucks a month in car insurance.  Yeah, $900 bucks a month.  And that wasn't counting gas and other expenses.

The folks over at The Hartford asked me to let you guys know that they have an provide auto insurance.  I don't have any personal experience with them, but I figure it's always good know who the players are and who has the best deal.

Auto insurance from The Hartford means great coverage at a great price. And you can get car insurance quotes from us anytime online. But The Hartford’s protection goes beyond just savings to get you more for your dollar.

We offer innovative features and benefits not found with some other auto insurance providers. People who request car insurance quotes today – can find out how they could be getting so much more by switching to The Hartford.

I have to say it's a little bit liberating to not have car payments anymore.  But for those of you who aren't in the same boat and need your car, it probably doesn't hurt to shop around for some online car insurance rates.

Any readers use Hartford and want to chime in?

Major League Bocce - Join NOW!

10/07/2012 06:12:00 PM 0 Responses
Sorry, only 1 day's notice to get the cheapest discount.  I've been super busy.  I head out of town for the next 3 weeks for work.  Miami => Hong Kong => Singapore => Detroit => Toronto.  My October is basically shot.  See below for those of you that have a lil more free time than I do.

Bocce Ball – Not Just for your Grandpa Any More

Check out a new arrival on the social sports scene in town – Major League Bocce.  Apparently, you don’t have to be retired to enjoy this refined Italian game.  You may not need to be refined either.  Major League Bocce is playing Tuesdays this fall at An Tua Nua near Kenmore Square.  Games are literally played at the bar on custom-design, 20’x5’ courts with lighter weight equipment then the traditional outdoor game.  Bocce serves as a means to an end - making new friends, playing for charity and keeping yourself social as we go into the dark days of day-light savings time.  Sponsored by Sam Adams and fueled by an arsenal of ball jokes, Major League Bocce looks like it’s the best preventative treatment for seasonal affective disorder that you’ll find in town this fall.  Register before October 8th for $30 or before October 12th for $45 when you use discount code beantown15. (Discount code is case-sensitive and should be entered in Step 2 of registration).
