Boston Ballet Season Starts in October

9/27/2012 12:38:00 AM 0 Responses
The Boston Ballet's 2012-2013 starts in about a month, so I thought I'd let everyone know about a few ways to save some cash on tickets.

Tickets start at $29 for season ballets (like Fall Program) and $35 for The Nutcracker.

Additional ways to save include:
·        Curtain Pass is an amazing deal. $156 for 7 tickets to use however you wish. (Subject to availability. Valid on all performances of season ballets and select performances of The Nutcracker.) Works out to be less than $23 per ticket, and you usually get terrific seats, worth 2 to 4 times what you’ve paid. It’s a punch card, redeemed day of the performance, so similar to Rush but you don’t need to be a student or senior.
·        Senior Rush (65+) is based upon availability, but we typically do all weekend matinees. $20 cash, up to two hours before the performance, at the Opera House.
·        Student Rush (full-time students with ID) is also based upon availability, but we typically do it for all performances, as long as there are seats left. Also, $20 cash, up to two hours before the performance, at the Opera House.
·        Student subscriptions are $20 per ticket, and you can get really great seats, seats that can be over $100 each!
·       Group Sales, for patrons attending a performance as a group of 10 or more, can save up to 50%, depending on the performance. Also eligible for exclusive add-ons, like Opera House tours and event-planning assistance.

The East Broadway Foodie Crawl - 9/25

9/23/2012 04:50:00 PM 0 Responses
Most folks only know Somerville's Davis Square high end culinary scene - or perhaps have gone out on a limb, taking an excursion into Union Square.  Here's your chance to get familiar with the delicious and affordable eats in East Somerville.  Located just a block from the Sullivan Square Orange Line t stop, East Broadway has mostly family owned restaurants, with fare so authentic you often might not understand all that's on the menu.  The restaurants represent El Salvador, Brazil, Haiti, Ethiopia and more.

On Tuesday, September 25th, The East Broadway Foodie Crawl opens up one of Somerville's nearly underground culinary districts: East Broadway Business District. The event was originally slated for 9/18, but a forecast of thunder storms and rain has given a second chance to those with a curious palate.  The East Broadway Foodie Crawl is a rare opportunity to have the doors flung open on more than 12 restaurants and taste the flavors that locals flock to.

The event is 6-9:30pm. Tastings run from 6-8pm, and dessert parties start up at 8:00pm in three area bars, kicking off after parties with local music.

In Line for the Iphone? Get Sponsored By Gazelle

9/19/2012 09:36:00 PM 0 Responses
I haven't swung by the Apple store yet (I sadly can't upgrade until November ... believe me, I'm counting the days until I can switch back to iPhone ... these last 2 years with my Thunderbolt have been painful).

But, I'm assuming people are already in line.  If you're one of the first 5 people in line, you may as well get sponsored.  Check it out - courtesy of the folks from Gazelle.

Gazelle, the nation’s leading high-end consumer electronics trade-in site, today announced the First in Line contest in Boston. To celebrate the expected availability of the new iPhone, widely rumored to be September 21, 2012, Gazelle will give the first five people in line outside the Apple store on Boylston Street a new iPhone.

The five winners will also be sponsored by Gazelle as they wait in line. The company will provide them with branded gear--including t-shirts, sweatshirts and hats, and a personal runner to get them snacks, charge their phones and deliver a pizza dinner the night before the new iPhone hits store shelves.

What: First in Line contest from Gazelle

Where
Outside the Apple store
815 Boylston Street
Boston, Mass.

When: Friday, September 21 (if the new iPhone is launched on this date)

How:
Win a new iPhone by being one of the first five people in line with a reservation. In addition to the new iPhone, Gazelle will sponsor the winners to wait in line as described above. To ensure Gazelle sponsorship, people in line must Tweet their acceptance to @gazelle_com, along with a picture of them in line, in order to qualify.

More information on eligibility and contest rules is available online at http://blog.gazelle.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/First-in-line-sponsorship-agreement.pdf.

After getting the new iPhone, consumers can head over to Gazelle’s pop-up store at Faneuil Hall where they can trade-in their used iPhone (3GS, 4 or 4S) from Friday, September 21 through Sunday, September 23. Consumerscan also enter Gazelle’s “Money Booth” to win one of many prizes, ranging from a t-shirt to a Macbook to $5,000 cash.

Infographic: The Evolution of Online Music

9/19/2012 07:57:00 PM 0 Responses
I've been asked to help get the word out on the Evolution of the Online Music Industry.  So rather than words, I figured you guys would prefer graphs and pics instead.

I like the statistic about how record store sales have decreased 76% from 2000-2010.  That's why I was buying put options on Best Buy like there was no tomorrow.  What are they gonna do with all that retail space when no one buys cd's or dvd's anymore?  *crickets*

Interestingly, though, (and maybe it was just me) - I can't remember a way of legally purchasing music back in 2000.  Ipods didn't come out until 2001.  I was a freshman in college back in 2000, it was all about Napster back then.  Nice to see that the industry's gone legit since then.

Sponsored Post: Hpnotiq's Primp & Prep

This post brought to you by Hpnotiq. All opinions are 100% mine.
Preview
I went on a date with a girl about 3-4 months ago (first date) and we decided to meet up at a bar downtown.  Our conversation went a little like this:

Me:  Should we get a couple drinks?
Her:  Sure.  What do you usually drink?
Me:  Whiskey mostly, with an ice cube or two .. sometimes scotch, sometimes rye.  What about you?
Her:  Oh, I'll drink anything fruity
Me:  Anything in particular?
Her:  No.
Waitress:  Can I take your order?
Me:  Yes, can we get 1 johnny black neat and 1 "something fruity"?

A little piece of me died that night when those words left my mouth.  I don't have anything against fruity drinks.  I happen to like the occasional Pimm's Cup on a hot summer's day.  But, my thought is that you at least need to be able to name a few of those fruity drinks that you like.

Knowing that I enjoy the occasional drink, and that my readers probably do too, the folks at Hpnotiq wanted the ladies out there to know about a new site that they're launching called Primp & Prep.
Here's a little more about the site:

"Primp and Prep" with your girls is all about getting ready before hitting the town in style! "Who's wearing what?" "Can I borrow some makeup?" "Those earrings look fab!" "Oh, turn this song up, it's my jam!" This is the calm before you and your girls take the clubs by storm. Primp & Prep! is an exclusive online site on hpnotiq.com, one stop shop, where girls can go to get all of their beauty, fashion, style tips, gossip, music etc. before they hit the town for their girls night out.  hair down, music up!

Basically it's a site dedicated to all the lovely ladies out there that I look forward to meeting when I go out.  I'm single after all.  Oh and if you're the type that pre-parties before going out, they've got drink recipes.  I just scrolled through all of them.  I'll be out and about for Fashion Week stuff.  Find me and I'll buy you a Blue Crush.

Introducing The Foodery

9/12/2012 08:00:00 PM 0 Responses
The last time I cooked a real meal in my kitchen was over a year ago.  I'm sure a lot of you are in the same boat as me.  We're busy.  Or we're single, and cooking for one blows.  Or we're just lazy and would rather someone bring me my food.  I spent 30 bucks ordering sushi off Seamless last night (here).  That happens at least twice a week if not more.  And it's mostly because I don't own food at home.  Every time I walk down the frozen food section of the grocery store, I read the calories and the sodium content on the box and then I immediately put it down and back away slowly.

Enter:  The Foodery, a new local company that has dedicated themselves to the craft of making healthy meals from sustainable, local, organic ingredient.  I'll let them speak for themselves.

King Richard's Faire - Open Now!

9/09/2012 09:48:00 PM 1 Response
I'm in the mood for a turkey leg.  There's only one place I go for that here. King Richard's Faire.  And it's that time of year again.  Oh, I'd also try to use the phrase "fetch me a beer, wench" (not in a mean-spirited misogynistic way, but rather in a "I used to read a lot of Dragonlance & Forgotten Realms books" and I'm reliving my childhood kind of way.  And if I see "grog" on a menu anywhere, I'm definitely ordering it.

King Richard’s Faire, New England’s largest and longest-running Renaissance Festival, opens its 2012 season on September 1 and runs through October 21, 2012 on weekends and Monday holidays (Labor Day, Columbus Day). Tucked away on 80 acres of beautiful, enchanted forest off Rt. 58, King Richard’s Faire is a full day of live, interactive entertainment for all ages, including exotic tigers and a rare liger, daring knights jousting on horseback, and eight stages filled with song and dance. Every Saturday, themed events add variety to the festival-like entertainment lineup.

Guests can mingle with royal subjects and performers, and tantalize their taste buds with the Faire’s delicious spit-roasted turkey legs, buttery ears of corn, boules filled with chowder and stew, ringlets of fries, champagne, wine and brew. Shoppers can stroll through the 16th century village filled with the wares of more than 100 unique and talented artisans. At every turn, guests will encounter minstrels, musicians, acrobats, stilt walkers, giant life-size puppets, mud beggars and more special surprises.

South Street Diner in Esquire's Sept Issue

9/06/2012 07:38:00 PM 0 Responses
Congrats to South Street Diner for making it into Esquire's September issue.  Mine has been laying around the apartment for at least two weeks now before I finally took advantage of Monday off to read it.

They made Esquire's list of spots for the "Best Late Night Food in America."

The Pancakes at South Street Diner Boston

Bostonians have made do with less for centuries. Just ask anyone trying to find an open restaurant after last call. But South Street defies the city's abstemious ways, serving up-to-the-brim plates of breakfast staples and burgers. Don't forget to feed the jukebox. 24/7; 178 Kneeland Street; 617-350-0028

I usually end up in Chinatown for late night eats, but since it's right there on Kneeland, methinks it's worth a shot sometime.

Where do you get your late night grub?

Purple Shamrock Closing After 32 Yrs!!

9/06/2012 07:38:00 PM 0 Responses
It always makes me sad when a Boston institution like this closes down.  Tears will be shed and car bombs shall be consumed.  I swear it.

After 32 years in business, one of Boston’s most iconic establishments, The Purple Shamrock is scheduled to close September 15, 2012 but not without one last hurrah!  In true Shamrock fashion, a week of traditional Irish festivities has been planned to send the beloved watering hole off in style.

To help Bostonians bid adieu by way of whiskey, instead of whining, the Purple Shamrock will host an Irish Wake on Thursday, September 13th. An empty casket, trailed by bag pipers, will parade its way to a final resting place inside the Purple Shamrock where the food, music and stout will flow freely, helping to drown the sorrows of patrons as they reminisce about the good days shared amongst friends. Prayer cards will be distributed and a purple wake guestbook will be displayed at the door for guest to pay their respects and sign as they arrive. Limited edition “Last Call” Purple Shamrock T-shirts will also be available for purchase.

Saturday, September 15th not only marks the half-way point to St. Patrick’s Day, but is fittingly the Purple Shamrock’s last official night of business.  To pay homage to the bar’s most celebrated holiday, “Last Call” at the Purple Shamrock will feature a full St. Patty’s Day menu, complete with green beer and live music. The Purple Shamrock encourages all to dress in their best St. Patrick’s Day garb and celebrate the tradition and success of the famed institution, right on up to last call!

MIX 104.1’s annual MIXFest concert returns to Boston on Saturday, September 8th with an all-star line-up of artists featuring headliners TRAIN, the three time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum selling band who topped the chart with their international #1 smash “Hey Soul Sister” and hits like “Calling All Angels,” “Drops Of Jupiter,” and “Meet Virginia,” as well as recent hits “Drive By” and “50 Ways To Say Goodbye.” Also staring at MIXFest 2012 is Gavin DeGraw, singer and songwriter (and attendee of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music) known for his hit songs like “I Don’t Want To Be,” "Chariot," "Not Over You," and “Follow Through;” and Andy Grammer, who exploded onto the scene last year with his huge hit “Keep Your Head Up,” as well as follow up hits “Fine By Me” and “Miss Me.”

As a way of saying “thank you” to the station’s many loyal listeners across the region, MIX 104.1 will again host this FREE concert at the DCR Hatch Memorial Shell along the scenic and beautiful Charles River. MIXFest will kick off at 4pm, rain or shine.

MIXFest began nineteen years ago as a complimentary music event on Boston Common. Last year, MIX 104.1 brought the event to the DCR Memorial Hatch Shell and returned to making this outdoor music festival free to listeners in an effort to express gratitude for making MIX 104.1 one of the market’s most popular radio stations.

This past Thursday, I was out celebrating a buddy's birthday and spent 90% of the evening drinking Goose Island IPA before switching briefly to shots of Jameson.  Coming up this week is a Goose Island Beer Dinner @ Zocalo.  Such good timing, I could use some more IPA.

9/03/2012 07:45:00 PM 0 Responses
The 4th Annual Boston Comedy Arts Festival will begin with an appearance by one of the most famous comedy groups in the world. The festival will begin with two performances from the famed Cambridge Footlights. The shows will kick off the festival on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:30 p.m. and at 9:30 p.m. at ImprovBoston. Tickets cost $25 and $20 with a valid student ID.  The festival runs through September 9 at ImprovBoston and The Brattle Theatre.

The festival kicks off with a double header of performances from the world famous Cambridge Footlights. With 129 years of experience, the Footlights have launched the careers of a long list of internationally-renowned comedic talents, including household names like John Cleese (Monty Python), Hugh Laurie (House) and Emma Thompson (Love Actually) while continuing to nurture exciting new performers like Mitchell and Webb (Peep Show) and Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat).

“We're thrilled to have the Cambridge Footlights kick off this year's festival.  Having a group of that caliber and tradition come in to Boston helps set the tone for the entire festival,” said Boston Comedy Arts Festival Producer Jeremiah Jordon. “Beginning with a group of their caliber only highlights our incredibly solid line-up with acts from all over the country. It's a great way to see a wide variety of styles, formats, and talent all in one hilarious weekend.”

Emerald Lounge Presents: Wicked New Music - 9/4

9/03/2012 07:45:00 PM 0 Responses
WHAT: Emerald Lounge and NY-based music-industry leader, Giant Step, continue their weekly series of Tuesday listening parties featuring some of the best new releases from well-known and up-and-coming artists, acts and DJs. These weekly listening parties not only feature new and established artists but also acts that are coming through town, providing Bostonians the opportunity to preview new music before catching a live show at a local venue. This Tuesday, Emerald will play songs from psych-pop gods, Animal Collective’s new album “Centipede Hz” along with new album tracks from indie rock siren, Cat Power, whose highly-anticipated album, Sun marks her return to new music after a six-year hiatus.

These weekly listening parties feature things like album giveaways, artist trivia, concert tickets and other giveaways.

WHO:

Animal Collective - Centipede Hz

Critically acclaimed as one of the new millennium's most important and inventive musical acts, Animal Collective has achieved success in releasing 10 albums since its inception in 2003. Their music is beholden to no particular genre; as the band often creates their signature sounds without the use of guitars, bass, or drums. Centipede Hz follows the widely celebrated Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009) and is the first since Strawberry Jam (2007) to feature all four original band members.

Cat Power – Sun

Sun is the 2012 studio album from Cat Power (which is the stage name of American singer/songwriter Chan Marshall.) She is known for her minimalist style, sparse guitar and piano playing, and breathy vocals. Billed as her most personal album to date, Cat wrote, played, recorded and produced the entirety of Sun by herself, a statement of complete control that is echoed in the songs' themes. This fall, Powers will embark on a world tour with a new band and play at the House of Blues in Boston on October 24th.

Tuesday, September 4th
Doors: 6pm
