17th Annual Taste of the South End
Showcases Boston’s Hottest Restaurant Neighborhood
2012 Event Includes Samplings from 40 Celebrated South End Chefs

AIDS Action Committee announces that the 17th annual Taste of the South End will take place Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Attendees will enjoy small plate culinary creations from at least 40 of the South End’s most vibrant restaurants. The popular event will also feature live cooking demonstrations, a silent auction and raffle, extensive wine tasting and beer sampling. Taste of the South End takes place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Boston Center for the Arts Cyclorama at 539 Tremont Street in Boston. Tickets are $95; VIP admission is $150. Proceeds benefit AIDS Action.

“Taste of the South End is a fun and festive way to spend an evening out in Boston. Our guests get to meet some of the city’s most talented chefs and sample their finest gourmet offerings,” said Rebecca Haag, president and CEO of AIDS Action. “But best of all, this night out supports the critical work AIDS Action does in combating the epidemic by eliminating new infections, improving the health of those already infected, and attacking the root cause of HIV/AIDS. Our work has contributed to the state’s reduction of new HIV diagnoses by 54 percent since 1999, which will save Massachusetts more than $2 billion in health care costs related to treating HIV.”

We catch up with our fellow South End restaurant friends and mingle with our customers outside of the bakery and restaurant,” said Joanne Chang, pastry chef and owner of Flour Bakery + Café. “But most importantly, we help raise money and awareness for AIDS Action by doing what we love—making delicious food.”

Lady Gaga Coming to Boston - 3/29

Lady Gaga is coming to  Boston tomorrow (Wednesday).  And Sweet is celebrating:

In honor of Lady Gaga’s Wednesday visit to Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education to unveil her Born This Way Foundation, Sweet creates the Be Sweet cupcake with custom-made Lady Gaga and inspirational word edible fondant toppers atop an assortment of flavors like vanilla, chocolate and red velvet.

100% of the proceeds of Be Sweet cupcakes sold at Sweet’s Harvard Square location on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, will go to the singer’s non-profit Foundation. Prices are $4.25/each, $48/dozen and $64/for 16. After February 29, Be Sweet cupcakes will be available by special order online until March 29, 2012.

On Monday, February 27th, 2012, from 6:00PM - 8:30PM, The Beehive's co-owner and resident curator Jennifer Epstein will host the 12th installment in The Beehive's continuing art series entitled, Sting! XII: Boston Contemporary. This installment welcomes 13 artists selected by the Boston Contemporary Group (BCG) whose members include Camilo Alvarez of Samsøn, Anthony Greaney of the Anthony Greaney Gallery, Russell LaMontagne of LaMontagne Gallery and Steven Zevitas of the Steven Zevitas Gallery. BCG was formed to support an environment in Boston for critically relevant contemporary art. BCG will use this exhibit at The Beehive to bring awareness to their group as well as to launch their new website hosted by Gallerist, the event’s sponsor, a New York based company revolutionizing the way people interact with art.

For six nights, Aura at the Seaport Hotel will prepare a Valentine’s Day feast for couples featuring a decadent choice of three starters, four entrees, and three desserts. For starters, guests will have the following options: Warm Beet & Celery Root Salad (goat cheese fondue, aged balsamic, micro arugula); Potato Leek Soup (truffle oil, fine herbs); or, Raw Bar for Two (shrimp cocktail, oysters on the half-shell, little necks, cocktail sauce, fennel mignonette, horseradish aioli). For starters, guest will have their choice between: Fig & Lambs Lettuce Salad (speck, smoked goat cheese, balsamic); and, Southern Fried Oysters (spicy cornmeal, radish remoulade). For main courses, there are three options: Grilled Rainbow Trout (radicchio, baby fennel, caper beurre blanc); Seared Duck Breast (parmesan polenta, root vegetables, fine herb puree); or, Minted Parisian Gnocchi (braised lamb belly, maitake mushrooms, Brussels sprout leaves). It's been a really long time since I've celebrated Valentine's Day.  Let me think ... I think it was maybe 2008.  So these next posts are for all the procastinators, I know you're out there.  Haven't thought of what to do yet tonight?  I'm going to dig through my emails and post every Valentine's one I find - until I lose interest and goto bed.  Consider it my community service for the week. 

So to kick it off, I start with my favorite hotel & hotel bar - The InterContinental.

Beta Test: 5GB Free Space at Dropbox

If you guys haven't heard about it yet, Dropbox is testing an automatic upload feature right now and will give you up to 5GB of additional space free if you test it out.

I managed to pull it off by copying 5GB worth of photos from my laptop onto my phone (Android) and then plugging it in again to my laptop and letting Dropbox auto detect it and transfer the photos.  Disclaimer, I pay for the most expensive internet package from the cable company and it still took me hours to upload.  One of my friends she had to do it overnight.  So just keep that in mind.

Bring Top Chef to Boston!

ZOMG!  Everybody fire up their twitter/facebook accounts.  We need to get this done.  I'm a huge fan of Top Chef.  Did I mention that I tried out Catch recently?  It's Hung Huynh's relatively new restaurant in NYC.  It was pretty good.  Ok, let's do this!

Marketing firm Digitas Inc. just launched a social media blitz to persuade the producers of the Bravo show “Top Chef” to shoot here for the show’s tenth season.

The “You Gotta Try Boston” campaign is asking local folks to post their favorite local culinary pleasures – a beloved restaurant, dive bar, dish, recipe – on Facebook or Twitter.

The campaign is an outgrowth of Digitas’ pro bono work for the city to help promote Downtown Crossing, where Digitas is based. But the suggestions certainly aren’t limited to Downtown Crossing establishments. In fact, some aren’t even in Boston at all (restaurants in Foxboro and Brockton get shouts out on the “You Gotta Try Boston” Facebook page).

Rob Rizzo, executive creative director at Digitas, tells me the idea for the campaign (along with its obligatory Twitter hashtag, #yougottatryboston) was hatched two weeks ago, and officially launched last week. Rizzo says he hopes the campaign will encourage people to give props to some of the smaller, lower-profile joints around town – as well as the city’s many famed restaurants.

NOW CASTING SEASON 5 OF CUPCAKE WARS!!!

It’s cupcake vs. cupcake in Food Network’s tastiest competition yet! Each week on Cupcake Wars, four of the country’s top cupcake bakers face off in three elimination challenges until only one decorator remains. The sweet prize: $10,000 and the opportunity to showcase their cupcakes at the winning gig. Whether a special Ace of Cakes anniversary celebration, a star-studded magazine party or an A-list celebrity golf tournament, these Cupcakes Wars really heat up. Candace Nelson (owner of Sprinkles Cupcakes) and Florian Bellanger (chef and co-owner of online macaroon company MadMac) serve as permanent judges with a third rotating judge each week, and Justin Willman hosts.

Bakeries, Cafes, Food Trucks, Cupcake shops, home businesses, etc. all welcome!! As long as you make an amazing cupcake and are up for a great competition, we want to hear from you!

Clio & Uni Now Open!

I just got word that Clio and Uni reopened today.  I'm a big fan of Ken Oringer, soooo I guess I know where I'm eating this weekend.  

When Ken Oringer opened Clio in 1997, his use of exotic ingredients, cutting-edge techniques and dramatic presentations quickly earned him accolades from Food & Wine, Gourmet, Esquire and more. From early experiments with molecular gastronomy thanks in part to Oringer’s stint at Ferran Adrià’s laboratory at El Bulli, to dishes that led to success on Iron Chef America, the Asian-inspired French/New American menu at Clio continues to evolve fifteen years later.

To celebrate the restaurant’s milestone anniversary and continued innovation, Clio reopens after renovations with a newly expanded bar area, extensive bar menu and a cocktail class series to highlight bar director Todd Maul’s intensely creative program. The renovations from original designer Peter Niemitz also extend to Uni, where the 10-year old Japanese-inspired sashimi bar will add late-night ramen and authentic Asian street food items to the menu, as well as begin an experimental sashimi night led by Ken Oringer himself.

Uni Late-Night Ramen

A pioneer in bringing authentic Asian ingredients, flavors and dishes to Boston, Ken Oringer answers the city’s call for good ramen with a late-night menu dedicated to the popular Asian noodle dish. The ramen offerings will change nightly according to Ken’s whim and will feature handmade noodles. The initial menu will include:

· Umami Ramen a rich dish of barbecued unagi, daikon, scallion, enoki and nori, topped with a two-hour egg

· Traditional Ramen an authentic dashi/chicken broth with pork, miso, grated ginger, daikon, scallion, enoki ad nori, topped with a two-hour egg

Thursday – Saturday beginning February 9, 2012
11 PM – 2 AM

THE BRADY PUNCH

1 1/2oz Makers Mark Bourbon
1/2oz Cointreau
1/4oz Blood Orange Puree
Muddled Fruit (Oranges, Limes and Cherries)
Splash of Club Soda












THE GRONK MONSTER

1 1/2oz Absolut Citron
1/2oz Blue Curacao
1/4oz Fresh Lime Juice
1/4oz Simple Syrup
3oz Ginger Beer
Served on the Rocks
