2012 Boston Pops Season Begins - 5/9

4/30/2012 08:00:00 PM 0 Responses
I love the Boston Pops. I try to go to at least one concert a year (not counting July 4th of course). The 2012 opens on May 9 and it sounds like it's going to be a great one per usual.

The Boston Pops 2012 season under the direction of Keith Lockhart, opens in style on May 9 with Broadway sensation Bernadette Peters performing many of the signature songs that have made her one of this country’s legendary stars of the stage and screen. The Boston Pops 2012 unifying theme, Visions of America, inspires a season dedicated to celebrating many of this country’s greatest musical traditions, culminating in a multimedia “Visions of America Photo Symphony” program to end the season on June 14, 15, and 16. These special concerts will feature R&B sensation Patti Austin, jazz vocalist Steve Tyrell, photographs by Joseph Sohm, music by Roger Kellaway, and lyrics by the unrivaled team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman, with a recorded narration provided by Clint Eastwood.

During the 2012 spring season, the Boston Pops will usher in a series of exciting talents to pay tribute to a wide range of American musical genres. Comedian, author, musician and all-around king of artistic versatility Steve Martin will pluck the strings of his banjo for his Boston Pops debut with The Steep Canyon Rangers on May 29 and 30, and for “Presidents at Pops” on May 31. John Williams, who celebrates his 80th birthday in 2012, will lead the ever-popular Film Night on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2, featuring music from many of the cinematic masterpieces that launched the Boston Pops Laureate Conductor to worldwide acclaim. Mr. Williams also shares the podium with Keith Lockhart for “Presidents at Pops” on May 31. Gospel Night at Pops celebrates a milestone as well, when conductor Charles Floyd raises the voices of the Boston Pops Gospel Choir on the 20th annual performance of this transcendent program. The Saturday, June 9 Gospel Night concert will feature FOX Network’s American Idol finalist MelindaDoolittle, winner of BET Network’s Sunday’s Best Crystal Aikin, and Boston Pops cellist Owen Young. The Pops pay tribute to Barbra Streisand on May 15 and 16 with captivating vocals from Ann Hampton Callaway, a great interpreter of the American Songbook. Cole Porter, one of the most prolific contributors to the American Songbook, will also receive a Boston Pops salute with the dynamic husband-and-wife Broadway showstoppers Jason Danieley and Marin Mazzie on June 5, 6, and 8. This season also features a Wild West Night on June 12 and 13 with the three young members of the genre-trailblazing string trio Time For Three.

Craft Beer & Dessert Tasting @ Finale - 5/8 & 5/15

4/29/2012 08:57:00 PM 0 Responses
I used to drink beer a lot more than I do now.  Now I'm more of a whiskey guy.  Scotch most of the time, or if we're doing cocktails I'll usually go for an old fashioned or a sazerac.  That being said, I'm a big fan of Allagash White (great summer beer) and Aventinus.  The only thing missing (in my opinion) is a Dogfish Head IPA of some sort.

Finale Showcasing Sweet Selection of Craft Beers at May Tasting Event
Enjoy selection of unconventional sweet beers enhanced by decadent dessert pairings

WHAT: Finale, Boston’s sweet spot, explores the world of craft beer in two tasting events featuring a sampling of five flavored craft beers paired with some of Finale’s seasonal selection of desserts. Executive Pastry Chef, Nicole Coady, has carefully selected desserts,
which will enhance the sweeter accents in these beers.

Additionally, Bryan Greene from Great Brewers will discuss the five beers and their distinctive flavors.

Dessert pairings include:

·       Original Sin Cider with Frangipane tart
·       Allagash White with lemon tart
·       Duvel Golden Ale with fresh Fruit tart
·       Aventinus with Mascarpone Mousse cup
·       Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock with Mini Chocolate Peanut Butter Cupcake

Free: Kids Eat Free at Kenmore Qdoba - 4/29

4/28/2012 08:03:00 PM 0 Responses
I was told that people enjoy when I put personal anecdotes at the start of my posts.  Therefore before I get started, here's a glimpse into my evening yesterday:

I spent last night explaining to two 22 year olds that they do not truly remember life before the internet.

me: do you know what card catalogs and/or microsoft encarta are?
them: no
me: did you ever die of dysentery while on the oregon trail?
them: what?
me: exactly

And now on to more important things, namely free burritos for your kids tomorrow.

Qdoba Mexican Grill, known for its passion for fresh ingredients and personalized preparation as well as its wide variety of innovative flavors, will give Bostonians the opportunity to meet Wally the Green Monster and kick off a month of fundraising for Youk’s Kids ( with a kids-eat-free event on Sunday, April 29 at the Kenmore Square Qdoba restaurant location.

Throughout the month of May, Qdoba guests who donate $1 to Kevin Youkilis’ Youk’s Kids organization will be entered into a drawing for a chance to meet MLB all-star Kevin Youkilis and to win tickets to a Red Sox game and free burritos for a month. Youk’s Kids’ mission is to create a community of support for the health and well-being of children in need. All contributions will be donated directly to the program with a check presentation at Fenway Park later in the season.

Kevin Youkilis and Qdoba have teamed up to support children. “Qdoba combines delicious dishes, fresh ingredients and pristine service to create a perfect business. Their philanthropic efforts with my charity, Youk’s Kids, is something I deeply value and appreciate. Thank you, Red Sox Nation!” said Youkilis.

11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m., Sunday, April 29, 2012: Kids eat free all day
2:30 p.m. -- 4:00 p.m.: Kick-off event
3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m.: Pictures with Wally the Green Monster

Bees Deluxe: Acid Blues CD Release - 5/6

4/25/2012 10:33:00 PM 0 Responses
You guys know how I love live and local music.  In the 3 weeks, I have seen:  The Kaiser Chiefs, the Ting Tings, Snow Patrol, and the summer hasn't even begun yet.  This Bees Deluxe event coming up on 5/6 combines the two - the live and the local.

The acid-blues Boston-based trio “Bees Deluxe” celebrate the release of their album “Space Age Bachelor Pad Blues” with a live show at Johnny D’s in Somerville on Sunday evening, May 6th.
The band financed the album with a Kickstarter project which included a psychedelic video shoot on location on Isla Mujeres, Mexico.

“We’ve been mixing tracks recorded at Natick’s “All Things Audio” Studios, and in my basement over the past few months, and are willing ourselves to release the album before we come up with more ideas – because we have too many ideas,” said keyboard player Bruce Mattson. “The album contains songs and tunes written specially for this release and some live-in-the-studio recordings of stage favorites.”

The album’s 12 tracks include the instrumental acid-blues opener “3454 miles,” and the Louisiana flavored originals “Kidnap” and “Rooster Shoes.” The band ventures into psychotropic moods with “The Girl with Green Hair” and “Asleep at the Chelsea” semi-biographical orchestrations of chaos and complex interplay between Bruce’s Hammond B3 Organ and Conrad Warre’s home-made FrankenStrat. The album also contains two heavily re-arranged covers, Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child” and the Roy Buchanan instrumental “Hot Cha” which show off the band’s interplay and musical strengths to first-time listeners. “If it didn’t have serious, and deep grooves,” said Patrick Sanders the band’s drummer and percussionist, “we wouldn’t have dreamed of releasing it.”

I'm going to be honest, I have no idea what acid blues is, but I'm listening to some of the tracks on their website right now and I like it.  Laid back, great guitar riffs, all I need is a drink and I'll be all set.

Congrats Turkey Shore Distilleries!! - 5/5

4/24/2012 08:58:00 PM 2 Responses
My sincerest congratulations to Turkey Shore Distilleries for making KICK ASS rum.  Unclear if I can make it out to Ipswich on 5/5 but you can be sure that I'm going to be drinking rum that day (preferably yours if I can find it)

Local artisan micro-distiller Turkey Shore Distilleries, makers of Old Ipswich Rum, garnered three medals at the American Distilling Institute's 9th Annual Craft Distilling Conference & Vendor Expo, held in early April, 2012 in Louisville, KY. Old Ipswich Tavern-Style Rum won a Gold Medal for Best of Class Rum category, the Gold Medal for Amber Rum, and the Old Ipswich White Cap Rum won a Bronze Medal in the Clear Rum category. Both spirits, handcrafted in small batches in Ipswich, MA, are available in liquor stores and restaurants in the greater Boston area and throughout Massachusetts.

"It was the surprise of the show," said Mathew Perry, President and Founder of Turkey Shore Distilleries. "It's humbling to get this kind of recognition from our peers so early in our career. Our first product, White Cap, is a smooth white rum, with vanilla notes. With our Tavern-Style Rum, we set out to re-create a refined version of oak barrel-aged rum that was so popular in Colonial Days. We're proud to be part of the quality, hand-crafted spirits trend that is growing so fast locally in Massachusetts and across the nation."

North Shore neighbor Ryan and Wood Distillery in Gloucester also won a Silver Medal in Amber Rum from ADI for its Folly Cove Rum.

Buoyed by these accolades, Turkey Shore Distilleries has plans to continue to expand its presence in restaurants, bars and liquor stores through its partnerships with Merrimack Valley Distributors and Burke Distributing. On May 5, 2012, the public is invited to attend Turkey Shore Distilleries' one-year Anniversary Celebration and Rum Release party from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. at its headquarters at 23 Hayward Street in Ipswich, MA.

Quidditch Champions Series - 4/28

4/21/2012 03:01:00 PM 1 Response
So, I've read all the Harry Potter books and the first and half of the 2nd of the Hunger Games books.  If I were to choose which series I like better, it's going to have to be Harry Potter.  That being said, I'm a little curious to see this real life adaptation of Quidditch.

Next weekend, on Saturday, April 28th, the Boston Cannons, (2011 major league lacrosse champions) are co-hosting a tournament at Harvard with the International Quidditch Association, called the Quidditch Champions Series. This is the first time that a professional sports team is recognizing Quidditch as a new and legitimate sport and for the occasion, nine of the top teams in the IQA are flying in from around the country, including teams from Los Angeles, Minnesota, Vermont, and Maryland.

Checkout the video below, it's pretty interesting.

The tournament runs for three hours at the Harvard Athletic Complex and admission includes access to the Boston Cannons season opener in Harvard’s historic football stadium versus the Rochester Rattlers. More than 10,000 people have attended this event in past years, and it’s a big family audience. Quidditch is a real-life version from the sport in the harry potter books; it is full-contact, co-ed, and features a human snitch and comedic announcers that make the game both thrilling as a sport and highly entertaining as a spectacle, for people of all ages to watch.

Tickets are offered at a discounted rate through the IQA at $15, and include access to more than five hours of sports at Harvard’s state of the art facilities.

4/21/2012 02:41:00 PM 0 Responses
The 3rd Annual Filmshift Festival is currently seeking entries from independent and local filmmakers, especially in the Boston/New England area.  So, get your cameras out, it's go time!

To celebrate our successful Kickstarter campaign, DJ Tanner will be DJing at Lucky Strike on Saturday 4/28 from 7:15 PM to 9:30 PM then we'll go down to Tequila Rain to dance the night away. All are welcome (21+).

About Filmshift The 3rd Annual Filmshift Festival was created by independent filmmaker, Jeremy Jed Hammel, as a way to combine three of his passions: The art of film, bringing people together, and giving back to charity in his local community.  Filmshift is held every year at the Somerville Theater in Somerville, MA.  We present independent films of most genres and we have special Showcases for local films, student films, and films that have a connection to Environmental or Sustainable topics.

Some films that we have presented in the past include “Earthwork,” starring Academy-Award nominee, John Hawkes (for “Winter’s Bone,”) Comic Con 2010 winner, “Marwencol,” and “The Burning Season,” narrated by Hugh Jackman.  We offer cash prizes, awards from industry leaders such as Final Draft professional screenwriting software, Script Pipeline, Improv Boston, as well as superlative awards to our filmmakers.  Ten percent of our gross ticket sales are donated to Christopher’s Haven, a local charity that finds low-cost or no-cost housing for families staying in Boston for their child’s cancer treatment.

Boston Civic Symphony Last Performance of Season - 4/29

4/20/2012 03:31:00 AM 0 Responses
I was at the symphony a few weeks ago and realized that I haven't been to a good piano concert lately.  What I'd really like to hear is some Chopin or maybe some Rachmaninoff,  but seeing as how this is the last concert of the season, I may swing by.

Sunday, April 29, 2:00 p.m. at Regis College in Weston, the Boston Civic Symphony, Max Hobartm conductor, will close out its 87th season with a program of music by Debussy, Liszt, and Sibelius. The Regis College Glee Club and Alumnae Chorus will be the guest artists for Debussy’s Nocturnes. Written in 1910, the piece examines three distinct facets of the night, Nuages (Clouds), Fêtes (Festivals) and Sirenes (Sirenes). Robert Finley, President and Founder of the Boston Piano Amateurs Association will be the soloist in Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat by Liszt. The final piece on the program will be Symphony No. 2 by Sibelius.

Free: Boston Conservatory WInd Ensemble Concert - 4/26

4/18/2012 07:43:00 PM 0 Responses
The Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble, Eric Hewitt conductor, presents “Roots” a free concert, Thursday, April 26 at 8 p.m. at The Fenway Center at Northeastern University (77 Saint Stephen St.)

VAUGHAN-WILLIAMS: Flourish for Wind Band
HOLST: Second Suite in F for Military Band
HOLST: Sommerset Rhapsody
GRAINGER: Lincolnshire Posey

According to Hewitt, "The lyrical aspects of the music of Holst, Vaughn-Williams, and Grainger stem from folk songs whose origin is of the British Isles. The evening will celebrate many musical themes - several will be heard in at least three different works. Combined with Britain's tradition of Brass and Military Bands, these ubiquitous melodies endear this beautiful music to musicians and listeners. It promises to be a very pleasing evening, with a few shocking sonic achievements."

Since 1990, Dining Out for Life has offered an easy and delicious way to raise money to fund critically-needed services for people with HIV/AIDS. On Thursday, April 26, 2012, participating restaurants around the country will donate a portion of all sales to local AIDS service organizations. This year, more than 250,000 people are expected to dine out in one of the more than 3,000 participating restaurants in 62 cities and raise at least $3 million for 60 AIDS service organizations around the country. Here in Boston, participating restaurants will donate 25 percent of sales of meals to AIDS Action Committee.

There are four ways restaurant-goers can participate in Dining Out For Life:

· Be a Host. Help fill a restaurant by recruiting 25 to 30 friends, family, and colleagues to dine out and spend the evening greeting them, thanking them for participating, and encouraging them to make a personal donation.
· Captain a Table. Bring a party of 10 or more to one of the participating restaurants and encourage them to make individual donations.
· Spread the Word. "Like" Dining Out For Life on, follow @Dine4LifeBos on Twitter and use the hashtag #DOFL.
· Dine Out. Make plans to eat out on Thursday, April 26!

Here is the list of participating restaurants as of this post:

28 Degrees
Birch Street Bistro
Club Cafe
Da Vinci
The Fireplace
The Hyde
KO Prime
Shanti-Taste of India
Tres Gatos

Book Signing: Most Wanted, Pursuing Whitey Bulger

4/14/2012 08:31:00 PM 0 Responses
I'm adding this one to the pile of Boston-related books to read.

James “Whitey” Bulger led the Winter Hill Gang, an Irish American crime family based in South Boston from around 1979 to 1994. He was often hailed as a local hero and modern day Robin Hood, dedicated to protecting the neighborhood and its residents. But in reality, he was a hardened criminal who created an empire based on extortion and intimidation and murdered over fifty people. On June 23, 2011, Whitey Bulger, fugitive Boston mob boss and #1 on FBI’s Most Wanted list, was arrested after sixteen years on the run. The Whitey Bulger trial is scheduled to begin November 5, 2012.

MOST WANTED: Pursuing Whitey Bulger, the Murderous Mob Chief the FBI Secretly Protected is the riveting account of former head of Massachusetts State Police Thomas J. Foley’s twenty-year pursuit of murderous Boston gangster Whitey Bulger—and of Foley’s key role in exposing the FBI’s protection of Bulger’s criminal empire. A career officer with the Massachusetts State Police, Col. Thomas J. Foley rose to become its highest ranking officer in 2001. Foley was awarded the United States Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service for his role in the Whitey Bulger/John Connolly investigation. Since retiring in 2004, Foley teaches criminology at the University of Southern New Hampshire. He still resides in the Boston area.

Here’s a listing of upcoming MOST WANTED signings:

Wednesday, May 9, 2012; 7:00 PM
Barnes and Noble (541 D Lincoln Street, Worcester, MA, 01605)

Thursday, May 17, 2012; 7:00 PM

Ice Cream Truck Battle - 4/12

4/11/2012 11:40:00 PM 0 Responses
Ben & Jerry’s vs. b.good: Ice Cream Truck Battle at City Hall Plaza
to Support Back on My Feet

The Ben & Jerry’s and b.good ice cream trucks will battle each other at City Hall Plaza on Thursday, April 12th from 1—3 p.m. to raise money for the nonprofit organization, Back On My Feet. Visitors will be encouraged to make a donation to Back on My Feet while enjoying free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and b.good milkshakes. The last battle took place on Thursday, April 5th. Ben & Jerry's served 1000 scoops while b.good offered a total of 800 milkshakes to the public. The ice cream truck that raises the most money for the nonprofit will be declared the winner of the battle.

“To once again be caught in the crossfire of the sweetest battle on the streets is a treat we’ve been looking forward to all year,” said Bridget Horne, Director of Communication and Corporate Relations at Back on My Feet. “It’s just one of the many ways Ben & Jerry’s and b.good have demonstrated their missions to use fun and innovative ways to improve the communities they serve, which is very much in line with Back on My Feet’s own fun and innovative approach to battling homelessness.”

Donations raised at the Ice Cream Truck Battle will allow Back on My Feet to extend its program to additional Boston-based shelters and transitional facilities. Last year, the nonprofit partnered with b.good and a team of Harvard and Northeastern students known as “The Burger Brigade”, who ran the Boston Marathon wearing burger suits to raise money for the cause.

So, to be honest, I don't read a whole lot of the other Boston resources often enough.  The hundreds of emails I get each day tend to keep me busy.  That's why it took me 5 months to find out Bostonist isn't around anymore (we'll miss you!).

But I did get a chance to glimpse at Stuff's upcoming Boston's Sexiest issue, and now I have a crush on DJ Miss Jade.  That, and I swear I will start reading Improper and Stuff again on a more consistent basis.

Frog Pond Gets New Carousel - Mid April

4/06/2012 02:19:00 PM 0 Responses
I'm so psyched that it's finally starting to warm up.  Let's hope it stays this way.

Now that winter is officially behind us, the Boston Common Frog Pond is getting ready for its newest arrival—a new Carousel that will open mid-April. The Carousel will be located adjacent to the Frog Pond, and will provide a new destination for kids of all ages. In a world that often moves too fast, people are still captivated with this 19th century amusement—children experience delight, parents and grandparents revisit their youth, and teens forget their inhibitions.

The Carousel is an American masterpiece, built by the Chance Morgan Ride Company of Wichita, KS. It features a variety of Bradley and Kaye horses, made from the molds of the legendary Los Angeles amusement company, wildlife figures, and a chariot. It has the style of a classic carousel with an oak floor, beveled glass mirrors, and a standard pie top with lighted crown.

The Carousel is handicapped accessible and has height limitations. Anyone 42” or taller can ride alone; anyone under 42” requires the presence of an adult. Admission for the ride will be $3.00, with 10 ticket strips available for $25.00. Hours of operation will be Sunday-Thursday 11:00am – 6:00pm; and Friday and Saturday, 11:00am – 8:00pm.

Trailer: Ted

4/03/2012 10:39:00 PM 1 Response
So, on a personal note, I went on a sorta speed-dating event tonight.  Here's what I learned:

Note to Self: For future reference, when meeting a girl for the first time, the correct way of asking her if she likes camping is not to ask her "How do you feel about pooping in the woods?"

Yup, that's right, ladies....I'm still single.....

On another note, it's been a little over a year since I first blogged about Ted (here).  The trailer is finally here and it looks hilarious.
