Pimp My Park: Boston Common Edition

2/28/2011 11:26:00 PM 0 Responses
There's an article in the Globe talking about some of the upgrades that are supposedly coming to Boston Common this upcoming summer.  Personally, I'd be pretty satisfied if it just stopped snowing, but it sounds like we're in for quite the revamp:  patio tables, chairs, a "reading room", free wifi.

That'll be really useful after I get me one of those iPad 2's that they're announcing tomorrow.  I was leaning towards the wifi-only Motorola Xoom but they're being too wishy washy on release dates.  But I digress, back to the issue at hand.

The $1.5 million initiative will replace cracked concrete with granite, plant trees, and install a sprinkler system in Liberty Mall, the grassy expanse leading to the State House. But it will do more than that. Sketches approved by the city show a newly invigorated piazza with 30 patio tables, umbrellas, and 70 movable chairs.

The plans include some unusual touches. A “reading room’’ will be stocked with magazines, newspapers, and carts with 400 books. A high-end food truck will sell hot meals. And the piano — a professional-grade electric keyboard made to look like a piano on wheels — will offer lunchtime entertainment as early as July.

A separate initiative may bring free WiFi to 80 percent of Boston Common as early as this spring, according to Menino’s spokeswoman, Dot Joyce.

Sounds nice.

Video: Shakira's Speech at Harvard

2/28/2011 11:18:00 PM 0 Responses
I don't know too much of the context here, I know that Shakira won this year's Artist of the Year Award at Harvard (here), but it also looks like she gave a talk for Harvard's Cultural Rhythms 2011 event.  I'm assuming they're related somehow.  Here's a video of her speech

Leap into Spring Fashion Event 2011

2/28/2011 12:44:00 AM 1 Response
While I was at the Davide viewing, Bloggery media rep Sara swung by Sanctuary to attend the Leap Into Spring Fashion event (here) and here's what she had to say:

It’s not easy to “Leap into Spring Fashion” in the midst of a typical snowy and windy Boston night, but we managed to brave the wind advisory and enjoy a night full of fun, food, and fashion at Sanctuary (what’s not to love?!).

About half-way though the night, designer number one, Crystal Noe, showcased her spring designs. If her vision is any indication of what’s to come, we can expect flirty designs, bright colors, floral prints, and bold jewelry this spring. After seeing the work of all of the night’s featured designers, we deemed Crystal Noe’s “Lizzie-tish” collection to be our favorite.

The second designer Eileen Apelian featured styles that reminded us of a cute 1950s pin-up full of polka dots, red, white, and black, and designer number three Julie Kontos, showcased designs with more of a funky, rock and roll edge. Although they have very different styles, each designer impressed the audience with their unique designs, intricate detail, and keen flair for fashion.

Overall the colorful fashions and warm crowd at Friday night’s event definitely got me in the mood for springtime. Although fashion might not be for everyone, few ladies wouldn’t fit in with the martini-sipping crowd full of fabulous women and men alike. The Leap into Spring Fashion event was perfect for any girlie girl in Boston, not to mention, an entertaining way to support a good cause, The March of Dimes.

Davide on Kitchen Nightmares Last Week

2/28/2011 12:32:00 AM 0 Responses
Soooooo, did you guys happen to catch last Friday's episode of Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares?  Davide in the North End was the featured restaurant and I had the distinct pleasure of attending a viewing party at Davide to watch the episode and also try some of their new menu items.

Congrats to owners Anthony & Frank Gesualdi and their families. The episode was great and so is the new menu.  You guys will have to bear with my fuzzy iPhone 3G pics for another month or so until I can upgrade to a better phone.

Below is some butternut squash soup, a sample of their new ribeye dish and their new filet mignon dish.  Scrumptious!  I should have had more pictures of the pastas and other dishes but I scarfed them all down before I remembered to snap shots.

I highly recommend that you watch the episode online and then head to Davide to try out their new menu!

Battle of the Cabs @ WineConnextion - 2/26

2/25/2011 01:55:00 AM 0 Responses
So many things to do tomorrow.  Stalk Shakira in Harvard Square?  Try out to be the new Purina Cat Chow Spokesperson?  Or maybe head to the Wine Connextion for their Battle of the Cabs wine tasting.

I'm not sure if I ever mentioned it to you guys but for the last couple of years, I had quit my job and spent my time working on a couple of my own start ups.  Needless to say, a lot of my luxury spending went to zero.  One of the things I had to give up was wine.  Now my little sister knows more about wine than I do.  How embarrassing.  Here's a few of the wines that I've been told they'll be tasting:

Heitz Cellar's Napa Valley 2005
Paul Hobbs Cross Barn Cabernet 2007
Beaulieu Vineyards Rutherford Cabernet 2007
Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet 2008
...and more.

The Wine Connextion, 117 Main Street in North Andover, MA

I've had the Caymus on several occasions.  It's delicious.  A couple of my other favorites are Cake Bread and Silver Oak.  Yum.

Agrippina Costume Talk at the BPL - TODAY!

2/24/2011 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Anyone interested in checking out the costumes that are going to be used int the Boston Lyric Opera's upcoming production of Agrippina?  There's going to be a mini-performance by countertenors as well.  Event is today at the Boston Public Library.

In Agrippina, Handel’s insidious satire of the fall of the Roman Empire, the roles of Ottone, Nerone and Narciso are often cast as “trouser roles,” young male characters sung by women. But BLO’s upcoming production features the rare combination of three young countertenors in these roles – Anthony Roth Costanzo, David Trudgen and José Álvarez, all making their Company debuts.

Join audience favorite Liz Perlman of Somerville’s Costume Works for a discussion on trouser roles and the elegant costumes of Agrippina, the tale of the ultimate stage mother’s desperate plot to push her spoiled son Nerone onto the Roman throne. Perlman will preview the show’s glamorous creations by Tony Award-winning costumer designer Jess Goldstein and discuss their path from shop to stage. Dazzling pieces on dress forms will decorate the stage as Perlman leads a lively, fashion-friendly audience Q&A. Performances by Costanzo, Trudgen and Álvarez will bring the production to life!

Thursday, Feb 24, 7 to 8 p.m.

Shakira Coming to Harvard - 2/26

2/23/2011 10:58:00 PM 0 Responses
I was big into Shakira my sophomore year in college.  That's when she had that "Wherever, Whenever" song right?  Or maybe it as the one about how her hips don't lie.  She's coming to Boston (Harvard in particular) later this week on Saturday - 2/26 to receive the Artist of the Year Award from Harvard.

Shakira will be honored with the Harvard University 2011 Artist of the year award. The presentation will take place on February 26 as part of Harvard's annual Cultural Rhythms award ceremony.

S. Allen Counter, director of the Harvard Foundation, says in a statement: "The students and faculty of the Harvard Foundation are honored to present multi-platinum artist Shakira with the 2011 Artist of the Year award."

Congrats to Shakira!  I may wander around Harvard Square just to see if I can catch a glimpse of her.

Presale: Rihanna & Cee Lo Green @ TD Garden - 7/24

2/17/2011 12:33:00 AM 1 Response
I saw Rihanna perform a couple of years ago when she opened for Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige.  That was a great concert.  It's actually been a while since I've been to a concert - going thru a little bit of concert withdrawal.  The last one I went to was the Kings of Leon.  Although if I had to choose one of the two, I think I'd prefer to go see Lil Wayne & Nicki Minaj versus Rihanna & Cee Lo.

For those of you who disagree.  The presale for Rihanna's "Loud Tour 2011" with Cee Lo Green starts today at 10am EST.

Winner: Two $25 Seamless Giftcards

2/08/2011 12:45:00 AM 0 Responses
Thanks to those of you that entered my latest giveaway for one of two Seamless gift cards (here).  Of the people who entered, you guys drank anywhere from 0 cups to 5 cups of coffee per day.  One person didn't quantify their coffee intake, but rather just said "a lot."  The average amount of coffee that folks drank was a little over 2 cups per day.

In terms of where folks got there coffee, the two most popular answers were:  home & starbucks.  I was surprised.  I expected more dunkin donuts coffee drinkers.

On to the winners.

Congratulations to:

Jack P.
Thomas F.

I will be sending your email addresses to the folks at Seamless who will then email you your $25 gift cards/codes/whatnot.

Ok, looks like we have at least two movies filming in the area for the next few months.  Hopefully we get a few more.  Remember one of my posts from a couple months ago about a potential Kevin James movie where he plays a mixed martial arts fighter (here)?  Looks like it's go time - and the movie is currently called "Here Comes the Boom" and they're filming in Quincy.

The city has reached an agreement with Columbia Pictures to rent out the old Quincy High School building for a movie shoot.

The deal, signed by Koch and Columbia Pictures Industries Inc. of California, calls for the city to receive $80,000 in rental fees for use of the old high school from Feb. 2 until Aug. 26. Koch will earmark the $80,000 to benefit the school department’s music program, Walker said.

I couldn't find anything on the movie in IMDB, but I pulled this from my Dec post

According to The Wrap, “James will play a physics teacher whose school is facing drastic budget cuts. In order to earn money to save his best friend’s job and the music program that his students hold dear, he moonlights as an MMA fighter, and ultimately winds up doing battle in the UFC.”

Sounds amusing.  Perhaps it'll end up another surprise hit like Paul Blart did.

Gisele is number 34 on Askmen's 2011 99 Most Desirable Women list. My internet is really slow tonight, so I did not make it through all 99.  I was too impatient to scroll through 99 individual webpages.

Just an excuse to post a pic of Gisele.  =)

Have a great weekend everyone.

Mila Kunis, Mark Wahlberg, and Bears. Oh My!

2/03/2011 01:42:00 AM 2 Responses
Ok, they're still not making as many movies in Boston as I'd like, but this one is going to be awesome. Especially because I'm not-so-secretly in love with Mila Kunis. So apparently there's a new movie being directed by Seth Macfarlane (Family Guy) that is going to be filmed in Boston soon featuring Mila Kunis and Mark Walberg. Movie is called Ted.

Actress Mila Kunis will reportedly join the cast of the new Seth MacFarlane film, "Ted." The new movie is a comedy written and directed by the "Family Guy" creator, and also stars Mark Wahlberg. Both of these actors could be award-winning actors by the time the film is making its rounds.

The movie is about a young boy who makes an interesting Christmas wish, for his teddy bear to come to life and be his best friend. However, years later the bear has become a "cursing, smoking, delinquent" who is preventing the boy (now a man) from fully maturing. That boy who grows up after making the wish will be played by Mark Wahlberg, while Mila Kunis will play the role of his adult girlfriend. Seth MacFarlane will voice the bear character in the comedy.

Some filming will take place in February, to get footage with snow, while the bulk of the filming will likely start in April or May.

That's what I've pieced together so far. Anyone know more?

Nabewise Says Davis Sq is the Trendiest Neighborhood

2/02/2011 12:12:00 AM 0 Responses
So I was contacted by Nabewise a couple of weeks ago and finally got around to checking their website out.  According to their users, Davis Square is the trendiest neighborhood in the Boston area?  Agree?  Disagree?

The NabeWise website helps people who are moving to a city pick the best neighborhood for them. It can also assist travelers in figuring out exactly what part of a city they want to book a hotel in or visit. On our site, users can review and rate neighborhoods in Boston (and a bunch of other cities, too).

The south end is all the way down at #9?  I find that a little surprising.  I'm also surprised Central Sq beat out Harvard Sq.

Charity: Not Your Average Idol - 2/3

2/01/2011 01:02:00 AM 0 Responses
Two things have me really excited about this event.  First of all, the food tasting features some of my favorite restaurants in Boston.  Second of All, Chester from Linkin Park is going to be there!

Ken Casey and Dropkick Murphys, Jordan Knight, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, American Idols Ayla Brown and John Stevens, Ahmir, Entrain, comedians Mike O’Malley, Lenny Clarke and Tony V. These are some of the individuals who will perform on February 3, 2011 at Not Your Average Idol, a benefit for Youk’s Kids, a foundation started by Boston Red Sox player Kevin Youkilis.

Not Your Average Idol will take place on February 3, 2011 at the State Room in Boston. The event will feature musical performances, comedy and much more, all to support Athlete’s for Heroes, a new initiative from Youk’s Kids. In addition to the performances, the event will feature a silent and live auction as well as food tastings from many of Boston’s top restaurants, including Avila, Big Papi’s Grille, Blue Ginger, Davio’s, Eastern Standard, The Fireplace, Toro, Island Creek Oysters and more.

I wonder if Chester will get mad at me if I tell him that I like their older stuff way more than their new (more mainstream sounding) stuff.

Got Any Luggage/Suitcase Recommendations?

2/01/2011 12:54:00 AM 5 Responses
Before I start, I have an amusing thought for you:  I've always wondered why there are luggage stores at the airport. How late for a flight do you have to be where you're like, "F*ck it - just grab a pile of sh*t; We'll get a bag at the airport."

I bring this up, because I'm currently shopping for some new suitcases.  The ones I bought a few years back are falling apart.  The handles that extend out for rolling don't extend anymore.  And some of the wheels are breaking off.  Question for readers who would like to put their two cents in.  Do you prefer soft suitcases, or hard ones?  I'm leaning towards soft because I can always cram a little extra stuff into them and it won't matter if they bulge.  Whereas with a hard case, I wouldn't be able to do that.  But, I'd assume the suitcase would be sturdier.  Thoughts?

Anyway, if you will recall, I bought a Shun knife (here) from CSN Stores a little while ago.  And I have to tell you, that knife is badass.  Since CSN is local to Boston and they have a few luggage stores as part of their family of websites, I've been checking them out first.

Oh also, if you have suitcase brand recommendations (that won't cost me an arm and a leg), let me know.  Typically I've just bought ones from a department store when the sets go on sale.

Recycle Studio - Indoor Cycling Studio

2/01/2011 12:37:00 AM 0 Responses
One of my buddies and frequent guest bloggers on the Beantown Bloggery - DanDan - told me a couple weeks ago that he's decided to start training for triathlons.  So this post is for him.

Recycle Studio, Boston’s premier indoor cycling studio, opened its doors for business in the South End on January 3rd. The studio will start off with a light schedule of classes which mostly consists of 45 minute rides but also an intro to cycling ride for those who are new to it and a 90 minute endurance ride for those looking to escape the cold during training.

In February, more classes will be added to the schedule with the intention to eventually have five daily classes during the week and three on weekends. The studio’s website says, “A good sweat is the best way to start or end your day” so the schedule will cater to this belief by offering morning and evening rides.

Much like a yoga studio, class styles will vary by teacher which will make it ideal for all levels. Some more traditional classes will be taught to classic rock while others are geared towards endurance with tracks from Florence + the Machine taking you through the “hills”.

Personally, I've been to a couple of spin classes when I used to belong to the Sports Club LA and both times, it felt like my heart was going to leap out of my chest when I was through.  Probably a sign that I got a good workout in, but not my cup of tea.  I've decided that if I do end up getting a job that doesn't require me to travel anymore, I'm going to look back into doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu again.
