Support Me & Support Parkinson's Research

8/31/2011 09:01:00 PM 0 Responses
So I'm about 10% of the way to my goal of raising $2500 for the Bachmann-Strauss Foundation and the marathon is about 2 months away.  For those of you who have already donated, I really appreciate it.  For those of you who haven't yet and would be willing to, I could really use the help.

If you missed my original post, I'm currently training for the NYC Marathon this upcoming November in an effort to raise money for a charity. I'm running to benefit The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation and I would greatly appreciate if you guys could help me out.

Believe it or not, the Beantown Bloggery has almost 6,000 subscribers. If everyone were to donate a dollar, I would more than double my goal of raising $2,500. I'm up to about 6 miles per run right now, only 20 more to go......

Here's a little bit about the charity I'm running for:

The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation (BSDPF) was founded in 1995 as a nonprofit 501(c)3 by Louis Bachmann(1916-2000) and Bonnie Strauss. The Foundation was started to encourage new research and scientists in the fields of dystonia and Parkinson disease, and to heighten awareness about the diseases. The early stages of scientific research are often the hardest to fund. Following a similar concept to that of a "venture capital", seed money is Funded through annual grant awards, this helps to leverage new ideas and advances in the fields. To date, the Foundation has allocated over $11 million dollars to over 210 grants around the world. These grants have helped to bring greater insight into the causes and-we hope-cures for dystonia and Parkinson's disease.

Thanks everyone!

1000 Words: Remixology

8/29/2011 08:19:00 PM 0 Responses
Didn't hit up Remixology last week (here)?  You missed out.

On Monday night at Drink, three of Boston's top bartenders gathered together to compete in the second-annual Appleton Estate Reserve Remixology Bartender Challenge. The first place winner, Sean Frederick wowed the crowd with his performance to Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" while he created his original "Street Meat" cocktail. For his second cocktail, "The Flip from French Lick," Sean performed to his favorite movie, Celtic Pride dressed head-to-toe in Celtics gear as he marched around the bar with a shaker in each hand. The cocktail was suitably created with Appleton Estate Reserve, Celtic Stout syrup, Riga Black Balsam and an egg.

Cold Fish @ Cinema Salem - Thru 9/1

8/29/2011 08:11:00 PM 0 Responses
I was a little preoccupied preparing for Irene this past weekend, so I didn't get a chance to get this up for opening night, but for those of you that are fans of horror movies & foreign films, Cold Fish will be playing for a couple more days in Salem.

COLD FISH-from Sion Sono, the director of LOVE EXPOSURE and SUICIDE CLUB. COLD FISH has won acclaim at both the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. In the film, mild-mannered Shamoto’s teenage daughter gets caught shoplifting. A generous fellow fish-store owner and his wife appear to help resolve the situation by having her work at their fish store. Too good to be true? You bet! Shamoto soon discovers the horrific truth about this seemingly perfect couple…who inextricably weave him into their grisly rituals. Inspired by true events, COLD FISH is a twisted, brutal, blood-soaked drama that reveals the underlying insanity of an ordinary man pushed well beyond the brink.

The film will be playing exclusively at:

Cinema Salem

Big River @ The Lyric Stage Co - Starts 9/2

8/28/2011 10:57:00 PM 0 Responses
I hope everyone weathered the storm ok, it didn't end up as bad as people were leading me to believe.  If anyone is interested, i have about 500 bottles of water sitting in my apartment now.

Join Huck and Jim on the Mississippi River in the 1840s, where Huck, escaping from his drunken father, meets up with Jim, a runaway slave.

The story of their journey downstream is an American classic that captures the idyllic pleasures and unacknowledged injustices of life on the big river.

Roger Miller, best known for his country-pop hits ("King of the Road"), deftly fuses his charming, blue-grass tinged sensibility with Twain's timeless story.

1000 Words: Dunkin Donuts 1K Giveaway

8/24/2011 12:39:00 AM 0 Responses
I'm a little late to the game in posting this, but better late than never.

South Boston resident Dorothea Grigoropoulos (center) was the lucky winner of the “Dunkin’ Donuts’ 1K Giveaway” in South Boston. Dunkin’ Donuts manager Sean McGonagle awarded Grigoropoulos $1,000, a Keurig brewer and a one-year supply of Dunkin’ Donuts K-Cup packs. Dorothea and her longtime friends Cecilia McClellan and Clair O’Rourke have been loyal customers of the Dunkin’ Donuts at 75 Old Colony Ave for 16 years.

PS.  I tried to get in on the Dunkin IPO a few weeks ago, that thing was on FIRE.  Congrats to Dorothea for winning and congrats to Dunkin on their IPO.  I was priced out before they even started trading on the open market.

Jeff Bridges & Ryan Reynolds Filming Here in September

8/22/2011 09:01:00 PM 0 Responses
I honestly can't keep up with all the comic book movies that have been coming out lately.  I did see Thor (it was kind of awful), but I haven't yet had the chance to see the new X-Men movie or Captain America.  I'll wait for them to come out on video and then save them for my next plane or bus ride.  Speaking of comic book movies, word on the street is that a new one, R.I.P.D., is going to be filming here starting in September and it stars Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds.  Speaking of Ryan Reynolds, I haven't seen the Green Lantern yet either - that did come out, right?

Deadline reported that the graphic novel adaptation, R.I.P.D. starring Jeff Bridges and Ryan Reynolds, directed by Robert Schwentke, will be released by Universal on June 28th, 2013.

Jeff Bridges will play Roy Powell (gunslinger who’s been dead for a while) and Ryan Reynolds will play Nick Cruz (recently murdered cop, driven by revenge) in the Robert Schwentke-directed supernatural comedy R.I.P.D. Production starts September in Boston. The film will open on June 28th, 2013

R.I.P.D. is based on the Dark Horse comics graphic novel by Peter Lenkov, illustrated by Lucas Marangon and Randy Emberlin.

I just saw a couple of casting call emails come across my inbox as well, so I'm pretty sure it's happening soon.  Keep an eye out.

Remixology @ Drink - 8/22

8/21/2011 09:47:00 PM 0 Responses
Everytime I go to a new cocktail bar, the first thing I order is an old fashioned (rye whiskey, no muddled fruit, just an orange peel).  The correct response (which I've received before from only 2 bars ever) is "that's the only way we make them."  But, I digress.

Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum is pleased to announce the second Annual Bartender Challenge returning to Boston on August 22. The Appleton Estate Rum Remixology Bartender Challenge is a contest seeking the most creative and passionate bartenders committed to perfecting classic and modern cocktails.

The Remixology Challenge will take place in four U.S. Markets – New York, Boston, San Francisco and Miami. Participants are charged with developing an original Appleton Estate Reserve cocktail made with a harmony of ingredients inspired by their favorite song. Round two will challenge each bartender to create a cocktail based on a well-known movie filmed in their respective city. Each Appleton Estate Reserve cocktail will be judged on taste, originality, presentation, creativity and inspiration from song and movie to cocktail.

Judges include Willy Shine of Contemporary Cocktails, Misty Kalkofen and John Gertsen of Drink Boston, and John Mayer of Craigie on Main (winner of the 2010 Remixology Bartender Challenge
Boston). Below each finalist, their home bar and song choice are listed:

2011 Regional Challenge: Boston

6th Annual Futures at Fenway - 8/20

8/17/2011 08:20:00 PM 0 Responses

I've been to to more baseball games this year than I have in my entire life ... I've been to 2 this year.  Up until then, I'd only been to one.  Still not really a fan, I prefer football.  But, it's growing on me.  Coming up this weekend is the 6th Annual Futures at Fenway event.

Futures at Fenway Doubleheader at Fenway Park on August 20th
The Boston Red Sox will host the sixth annual Futures at Fenway, presented by Xfinity, Minor League doubleheader at Fenway Park on Saturday, August 20. "America's Most Beloved Ballpark" will once again play host to the fun and excitement of Minor League Baseball.

Beginning at 1:05 p.m., game one will feature the Red Sox AA affiliate Portland Sea Dogs taking on the Binghamton Mets from the New York Mets organization. The second game will showcase the AAA Pawtucket Red Sox battling the Syracuse Chiefs, an affiliate from the Washington Nationals organization.

The games allow fans of all ages to be a part of the action with on-field promotions, autograph sessions with stars from all the teams and special activities just for the kids.  Tickets are still available and start at just $5.

Come to think of it, that's makes it 3 baseball games and 0 football games.   I usually just watch the games at home or at a bar.  But perhaps this year I need to broaden my horizons and check out a Pats game live.

I try to stay away from dessert (and sugar in general) but this past weekend, a friend from out of town visited so a big group of us went to dinner and at the end we all ordered dessert.  It was so good.  I wish I had a better metabolism.  But since I don't, Bloggery Media Rep Sara is going to head to the New England Dessert Showcase in my place.

The Anthem Group, a Boston-based marketing and event agency, is pleased to announce the 2011 New England Dessert Showcase. Cliff Diving + Cruise = Awesome - 8/20

8/15/2011 09:54:00 PM 0 Responses
I went cliff diving once when I was in college while on a trip to Jamaica.  It was terrifying.  And I think I was probably only 25 feet up.  The guys this weekend are going to be doing 80.  This particular event is a two-fer.  Go on a cruise AND watch the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series ... and sing I'm On A Boat at the top of your lungs.......

On Saturday, August, 20, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series tour makes its first-ever stop in New England. The Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) building will be transformed into the launch pad as a group of world class acrobatic athletes dive from 80 feet above water, reaching speeds upwards of 60 mph, as they plunge into Boston Harbor.

While most people will watch from land, Spirit of Boston is offering a unique opportunity to catch all of the death-defying action from front row seats on the water. The boat will cruise along Boston’s Inner Harbor from 3:30 – 5:30 PM, allowing spectators direct views of the competition while enjoying a light buffet and summer cocktails on the outer decks.

Spirit of Boston’s ICA Cliff Diving Viewing Cruise menu will include a variety of Spirit’s most popular dishes including; Chicken Fontina, Pasta Primavera a la Vodka, Garlic Potatoes and a delicious assortment of desserts. Tickets include a complimentary cocktail at boarding from Spirit’s summer cocktail list. This is one event not to be missed.

Board: 3 PM
Cruise: 3:30 – 5:30 PM
Date: Saturday, August 20
Tickets: $37.90/person – Kids 12 and under cruise FREE
- Includes complimentary boarding cocktail and light buffet

Book Signing - Fire It Up - 8/13

8/11/2011 08:15:00 PM 0 Responses
One of the only things that I don't like about living in the city (an apartment) is that I can't grill as often as I'd like to, or ever actually.  That's one of my favorite things to do in the summer.  And whereas, I usually just stick with steaks and burgers, being able to grill 'everything' does have a certain appeal.

Coming up this weekend is a book signing for "Fire It Up"

KitchenWares by Blackstones – located at 215 Newbury Street – will host cookbook authors Andrew Schloss and David Joachim for a book signing and cooking demonstration on Saturday, August 13th from noon to 2pm. They will be signing copies of their cookbook, Fire It Up: More than 400 Recipes for Grilling Everything.

..... and now I want steak, corn on the cob, and watermelon.

Frog Appreciation Day @ Frog Pond - 8/20

8/10/2011 11:29:00 PM 1 Response
So I got tickets to the upcoming Jay-Z & Kanye West concert and was super psyched for about four hours.  And then I realized I couldn't go and was pretty bummed out.  And then I got the Watch the Throne album last night, and now I'm not quite so bummed - so long as I can sell my tickets.

But I digress.  Coming up next week is Frog Appreciation Day at Frog Pond.

The Boston Common Frog Pond is partnering with Zoo New England‘s Franklin Park Zoo on August 20 for the first annual Frog Appreciation Day, a free, entertaining family-friendly event aimed at educating young people about frogs here and around the world, and the importance of protecting animal habitats. There will be face painting, arts and crafts tables where children can make beanbag frogs, a frog release of dozens of toy frogs into the Spray Pool, and giveaways of free children’s tickets to Zoo New England’s Franklin Park Zoo. Zoo New England’s Education Department, members of the national Frogwatch initiative, will conduct an interactive question and answer session all about frogs. The event is 10am – 2pm.

So I've been reading up on what the latest trends have been lately and two things kept on coming up.  One was beer cocktails (I've tried them, I'm not a fan).  And the other was pop up restaurants.  As luck should have it, there's one coming up next week that features our very own Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette.  I'm a pretty big fan of their restaurants, so I'm pretty excited overall.

Here are the details that I have:

ICA: DJ's on the Harbor - 8/12

8/08/2011 10:02:00 PM 0 Responses
So I went to bed last night super early, woke up at 5am, looked outside into the darkness and thought to myself "there's no way I'm going running right now."  I have no will power when it comes to running.  It's horrible.  But at least I did go for a run after work today.  That was no picnic either, but at least I was awake.

The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA) presents DJs on the Harbor, for three Fridays in August. In conjunction with The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl, the ICA brings some of the best DJs around to the ICA’s Putnam Investments Plaza on Boston Harbor for a night of art, music and dancing. (Program moves inside in case of rain.) Music and dancing start at 7:30 and go until 11 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to stroll through the ICA’s hit exhibition The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl. The Water CafĂ© will be open for drinks and light food. Tickets, which include museum admission, are $15, or $10 for members and students.

Opening DJ set by Pajaritos

Free: Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream thru August!

8/07/2011 08:21:00 PM 0 Responses
So I'm starting something new this week. More and more events are popping up after work, which has been preventing me from training for the marathon (here) as much as I'd like to, so I'm going to start waking up at 5am, to go running before work. Is this actually going to happen? I dunno, but I'm going to try.

In addition to running more, I seriously need to give up the junk food.  I had beer and pizza this weekend.  Delicious, but probably not good for me.  Adding to the list of stuff that's not good for me is free Ben & Jerry's ice cream throughout the month of August......

Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Truck will tour Boston from August 1st through August 28th attending community events and visiting non-profits. While giving away ice cream is nothing new for the irreverent ice cream maker, what is unique is that the good people of Boston can help direct where the truck will go simply by plugging into the tour via Twitter and Facebook. All throughout August there’s a chance for Tweeters to become ice cream eaters and determine the route the truck takes.
