Review: 49 Social

6/29/2011 09:35:00 PM 0 Responses media rep DanDan swung by 49 Social last week to check out the new digs and he had some nice things to say about the place.  Where was I?  I'm glad you asked.  I was at home studying for what I thought was going to be the last of my three licensing exams that I had to take for work.  That is until one of the VP's walked up to me the day before my exam and said "when you're through with that one, i want you to take the series 3 too."   AHGHGHGHG.  We don't even trade futures, why do i need to take the exam?  Bah!  Anyway, on to the review and some pics of scallops that have me thinking about licking my monitor.

I had the chance to swing by Downtown Crossing's newest restaurant, 49 Social, which took the place of Ivy Restaurant at 49 Temple Place. Veering away from the small plates of its predecessor, 49 Social serves up generous portions of New American cuisine prepared by chef Michael Lishchynsky from the Four Seasons Hotel. The beautifully remodeled three story dining room features two bars; I would definitely recommend stopping by the first floor bar for a very well made cocktail. Although the $20-30 main courses are very reasonable, they do feature a nightly bar menu for those looking for smaller fare. I would personally recommend the burger, delicious!

Extreme Sailing Comes to Boston - 6/30

6/27/2011 10:06:00 PM 0 Responses
The theme of the day at work today was "I didn't say it was your fault, I just said I was blaming you."  Needless to say it was a miserable day.  So bear with me and my circuitous chain of thought.  It started with "thank goodness July 4th weekend is coming up" which led me to "it'll be nice to spend time chilling at my buddy's lakehouse"  which lead to "i love being by the water"  which lead me to think about the Extreme Sailing Series which is coming up this week.

The Extreme Sailing Series™ at Fan Pier headlines the 30th anniversary of Boston Harborfest, the largest Fourth of July celebration in the United States. This fast-paced, highly competitive stadium sailing Act comes to North America for the very first time in its five year history and runs from Thursday, June 30 through Monday, July 4, 2011 at Fan Pier.

Boston’s waterfront will showcase close combat racing on high-tech, high-speed catamarans raced by some of the world’s best skippers. This 11-month global tour spans three continents with eleven top-class teams from eight nations. The award-winning circuit brings together sailors from fifteen different nationalities, including Olympians, America’s Cup winners, world champions and two-time Olympic Gold medalists who race against each other on identical boats along the heart of Boston’s inner harbor. Previous stops for the Extreme Sailing Series™ included Muscat, Oman; Qindao, China; and Istanbul, Turkey and will conclude with races in the United Kingdom, Italy, France and Spain before their final stop in Singapore.

Check out the video below:

Looks pretty awesome.  I haven't seen racing boats like that since the Volvo Race a few years back.

Queen of the Sun @ The MFA - 6/22

6/20/2011 09:08:00 PM 0 Responses
I scheduled my final exam for next Monday. Which means two things.

1. I get my life back in just under a week.
2. I have A LOT of studying to do before now and next Monday.

The folks from Queen of the Sun were nice enough to send me a copy to review once I get a chance - which I'm guessing will be Monday night. For those of you that have a little more free time than I do, I suggest you swing by the MFA starting on Wednesday to check it out.

Winner of numerous International Film Festivals, Queen of the Sun takes us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, weaving together dramatic stories of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world.

Queen of the Sun is a Slow Foods film, featuring Carlo Petrini, Michael Pollan, Vandana Shiva, Raj Patel and Slow Foods beekeeper Massimo Carpinteri in Italy. As Petrini explains in the film, "If we kill all the bees there will be no agriculture. I repeat, no agriculture. Bees are the pollinators that guarantee fruit growth and survival." Pollan says, "The honeybee is important because we depend on it to pollinate 40 percent of our food, a tremendous amount of what we eat."

Free Kickass Cupcakes - 6/18

6/16/2011 10:41:00 PM 0 Responses
I'm a little sad that i have to pass on this one.  I just made a bet with one of my roommates that I could lose 15lbs before he could.  And he really doesn't want to lose.  I'm still counting on my marathon training (which started this week) to help me kick his ass.  Speaking of kicking ass - free Kickass Cupcakes this Saturday!

It was "Game 3' when Sara Ross of Kickass Cupcakes decided her favorite team needed some extra (sweet) love so she held a contest to create a Bruins themed Cupcake (photo below), she then sent a bunch directly to the Bruins for a pregame snack. That night they won 8 to 1. Sara’s cupcake fans were determined that the cupcakes were good luck and urged her to send to the Bruins every home game thereafter -- guess what -- they kept winning! Sara sent some along for the Stanley Cup Game 7, just to make sure, and sure enough – they won the series!

To celebrate this momentous win, Sara will be offering free mini lucky Bruins Bear Claw Cupcakes* at Kickass Cupcakes this Saturday to celebrate the team’s victory parade!

*while supplies last

About the Bruins Cupcake

The Bruins Bear Claw Cupcake is made up of a buttery almond cake with a milk chocolate ganache center, topped with cream cheese icing, crunchy honeycomb candy and honey drizzle for the finish.

Man ... i love cream cheese icing.  blargh.  Must .... lose .... weight.

Review: According to Tip @ The Lyric Stage

6/15/2011 11:02:00 PM 0 Responses
Bloggery media rep DanDan swung by the Lyric Stage this past weekend to check out one of their new shows "According to Tip." Here's what he had to say:

This Sunday, I had the opportunity to swing by the latest show at the Lyric Stage, According to Tip. Although I'm not a Boston native, hearing behind the scenes stories from former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neal's life was a fascinating reminder of how politics really work, and how too few stay true to their beliefs.

Emmy award winning writer and commentator Dick Flavin shows off his versatility in this one man show, by moving from humorous anecdote, to poignant story, and back to lighthearted song with ease. Definitely an entertaining, and thought provoking performance--worth checking out!

And here's a little bit more about the show:

Longtime Boston commentator Dick Flavin wrote and stars in this award-winning solo show based on the legendary life of Speaker of the House Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill. Sprinkled with humor and even a little bit o' Irish music, According to Tip tells the story of the liberal Democrat's rise from Cambridge's Old Dublin neighborhood to the House of Representatives, where he colorfully served as speaker during the Ford, Carter and Reagan presidencies. Presented by Paul T. Boghosian/Harborside Films June 9 through July 3 at The Lyric Stage, 140 Clarendon Street, Back Bay Boston. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm and Sundays at 3pm.

EurekaFest - 6/16-6/18

6/13/2011 08:30:00 PM 0 Responses
I used to do science fair every year when I was in highschool. I even made it to ISEF my sophomore year in highschool. Coming up this week is EurekaFest - a celebration of inventors that are way smarter than I ever was.

I wanted to make sure that Lemelson-MIT’s fifth-annual EurekaFest, held this week on June 16-18, is on your radar. This three day celebration in Boston brings together inventors of all ages and aims to inspire our next generation of science and technology leaders.

You will have the chance to meet high school inventors showcasing their prototypes, including:

- Pike Central High School InvenTeam (Petersburg, Ind.): Lightweight, portable emergency shelter to be used after natural disasters to house displaced people; includes a water purification system and renewable energy power source for an LED light

- West High School InvenTeam (Salt Lake City, Utah): Autonomous, solar-powered robot to locate unexploded weaponry

- Berlin High School InvenTeam (Cherry Plain, NY): Alert device for hearing-impaired athletes

You can also speak with renowned scientists and technologists who will be presenting:

- $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize winner, to be announced June 14, for work in healthcare technology and entrepreneurship

- Elizabeth Hausler, $100,000 Award for Sustainability winner, founder and CEO of Build Change: sustainable earthquake-resistant housing technology to reduce deaths, injuries and economic losses caused by natural disasters in developing countries

I'm going to need someone to invent me some badass painkillers because serious marathon training starts tomorrow.  It's going to be ugly.

KitchenWares’ WHOLE HOG Event w/ Tom Daly - 6/18

6/12/2011 10:58:00 PM 0 Responses
I figured I'd stick with the "Pork" theme for the day and tell you about an event coming up at Kitchen Wares later this week.  I've always wanted to take a butchering class (for beef though).

KitchenWares’ WHOLE HOG Event with Tom Daly, Butcher from Savenor’s Market

Get your grillin’ tips from Tom Daly and your edge back with a complimentary knife sharpening from KitchenWares’ Wusthof Representative

Event to benefit to Rosie’s Place KitchenWares is hosting Tom Daly, Butcher for Savenor’s Market, for a Pig Butchering demonstration and grilled pork tasting, including a delectable Boston Pork Butt, on Saturday, June 18th from 11:30am to 1:00pm. (Pardon the rude name but that’s really what it’s called, particularly in the Southeastern US). This is the perfect event for dads and anyone who loves grilling season. Get your Grillin’ on. With a purchase from KitchenWares on June 18/19, attendees will receive 10% off all weekend long at Savenor’s Market. With a purchase from Savenor’s on June 18/19 you will get 10% off at KitchenWares on those days.Get your Edge back. Our Wusthof representative will be in the store on Saturday, 11am-3:00pm, to professionally sharpen any two kitchen knives on-the-spot for free. (excludes Japanese , single bevel and serrated knives for technical reasons).

This event is free and open to the public. A ten dollar donation is suggested to help KitchenWares raise funds for Rosie’s Place. All donations will go to support their programs within Boston’s communities.

All this talk of grilling  makes me wish I had a yard and/or balcony.  Apartment living prevents me from grilling anything delicious.  But, I'm heading up to a buddy's lakehouse in NH for July 4th and mark my words, I will be getting my grill on.

Boston Bacon Takedown - 6/19

6/12/2011 10:51:00 PM 1 Response
I don't eat pork. But, I've had two separate conversations in the last month, both with people telling me about life-changing bacon. The first was the bacon at Peter Luger's in Brooklyn. The second was a brunch bacon tasting that would change me forever into a pork eater. I've managed to refrain for the time being, but I did want everyone else to know that the Boston Bacon Takedown is happening in just under a week.

Hello everybody!!! I'd love if you could check out, list and discuss The Most Important thing Ever- The Boston Bacon Takedown - June 19 3PM at the Armory in Somerville! You'll be tasting the bacon-centric recipes of 20 local cooks- sweet and savory- and judging the most worthy of your ballot. In the past we've seen cheesecakes, bloody marys, tacos... everything. Tons of prizes for the cooks (Le Creuset, Wusthof, Anolon, and more) and a chance for attendees to win a year's supply of Hormel Black Label Bacon!

I've tried beef bacon and turkey bacon before.  Neither was particularly impressive.  Also, what would you consider a "year's supply" of bacon?  50 lbs?  That'd assume about a lb a week of bacon consumption.  I have no idea if that's a little or a lot.

Rock and Blues Concert Cruises Have Begun

I mentioned this last month (here), but I find that if it's not happening the week I'm currently in, I tend to forget.  So here's a friendly reminder that the Rock and Blues Cruises for the season have begun as if this last weekend.

I'm trapped studying for my last exam for the next few weekends, but I'm hoping to hit up one of the cruises in July or possibly August.

Here's the schedule:

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Lucy’s Love Bus.

Charity: Burritos and Beer - 6/9

6/06/2011 11:44:00 PM 0 Responses
I took my second exam today (series 63) and rocked it, so I continue to get to keep my job for the time being.  That is until I take the series 55 in a few weeks.  But that one will be the last one.  So it's the home stretch for me, baby!  Then I get to look forward to just the 14 hour workdays and no studying.  That actually sounds pretty good to me right about now.  Needless to say, it's been a busy couple of months.  But there's always time for burritos and beer - especially when it's for a good cause.

Please join us at boloco Pearl Street on Thursday, June 9th, as we enjoy burritos & brews to raise funds for Team Boloco who will be riding The Prouty on Saturday, July 9th. The Prouty is a 30/50/100 mile bike ride to benefit the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Boloco's head chef, Jason Hutchinson, will be preparing boloco favorites in addition to some newly inspired flavors yet to hit the menu! And our good friend, Todd, from Samuel Adams Brewery will be pairing our burritos with the Sam Adams Summer Styles Variety Pack. Finally, Food Should Taste Good will be on hand sampling a variety of chips, including their addictive Cheddar flavor! While the portions will be on the "disturbingly small" side, we promise you'll leave with a belly full of snacks, beer, and burritos. What could be better than that?

Taste of Somerville - 6/7

6/05/2011 11:13:00 PM 0 Responses
Note to self:  I haven't been to any of the restaurants listed below, which means I probably should spend more time exploring Somerville.  Or maybe I'll just swing by the Taste of Somerville tomorrow.

The Somerville Chamber of Commerce Dining and Nightlife Group is all set to deliver the community’s foremost foodie event, the Taste of Somerville on Tuesday, June 7 at the Boston-Somerville Holiday Inn.

More than thirty restaurants have signed up to show off their culinary acumen for event attendees, who can expect to sample everything from neighborhood Italian classics to Ethiopian fare to Chinese fusion.

Event organizers are pleased to have recruited several small eateries from East Somerville’s distinguished immigrant neighborhoods. These newcomers include Maya Sol, Fasika Ethiopian, Rodizio Brazilian Steakhouse, and El Potro. Former Chef Ray Zonghetti, the event’s executive and long-standing champion, says, “The purpose of the Taste is to showcase what is truly unique about Somerville. Our event is both a celebration of the local and a solid marketing opportunity for small businesses so important to Somerville’s economy and community life.”

Henry Winkler In Town - 6/4

6/03/2011 12:25:00 AM 1 Response
I went out "networking" with clients tonight. For those who haven't been to business school (including me), "networking" is the term that MBA students use to describe "drinking on a weekday."  Just kidding .... not really.

That being said, I have very little motivation to blog tonight.  Therefore, i'm going to keep it short.  You've seen him in Happy Days, you've seen him in Waterboy, you've seen him on that show on USA about a concierge doctor in the Hamptons (I forget the name) - Henry Winkler is going to be in town this Saturday - as reported by Bloggery Reader Arestia:

Hey! Henry Winkler will be in-store signing his new book I'VE NEVER MET AN IDIOT ON THE RIVER Sat, June 4, 3-5p at Porter Square Books.  He's been in town filming HERE COMES THE BOOM w/ Kevin James and Salma Hayek.

Speaking of networking.  I had a new drink tonight - double vodka soda with a splash of grapefruit juice.  It wasn't bad.

Creative Resiliency: A Benefit Event for the Women's Lunch Place of Boston

We are excited to invite you to an innovative and interactive artistic experience: one we hope will spark inspiration and highlight the remarkable resiliency of the human spirit - that which sustains us through hardship, reconnects communities, and renews faith and meaning throughout our lives.

Art, at its best, emerges from this process; as a reflection of hope and as an inspiration for change. This uniquely human capability to transcend even great loss: through envisioning and then creating new possibilities, defines dignity. And, the preservation of dignity drives the mission of the Women's Lunch Place of Boston.

Winners: Signpost Allmenus Giveaway

I don't order delivery very often.  I usually try to get out of the house for a little bit otherwise i'm either trapped at work, or trapped in my apartment.

However, I had a pretty unpleasant day at work today so I decided to order in - i was too lazy to head out again after work.   I decided on szechuan; it was delicious.

For those of you who may have been curious - among those of you who entered - thai food was the overwhelming winner.

Congratulations to the following three folks for winning the drawing.

Stephanie K
Suzie L.
Faye N.

Thanks to everyone for entering.   I'll work on a new giveaway soon.
