Free: World Oceans Day @ NE Aquarium - 6/5

5/31/2011 10:08:00 PM 0 Responses
I love aquariums and I love free stuff.  So this Sunday is the perfect union of both.   Hopefully the weather will cooperate for this weekend's upcoming World Oceans Day at the New England Aquarium.

In celebration of World Oceans Day, the New England Aquarium and its partners will host a free event Sunday, June 5 on the Harborwalk featuring hands-on education activities, sustainable seafood cooking demonstrations, habitat restoration exhibits, and much more.

Under the theme of Dr. Suess’s children’s book, “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish,” the World Oceans Day celebration will include family-fun activities with ocean facts, oil spill recovery and awareness information, green products and an introduction to the Aquarium’s live blueTM Ambassadors program for teens.

Four local chefs will also serve up Seuss-style sustainable seafood selections: One Fish (mussels), Two Fish (hybrid striped bass), Red Fish (Gulf wild red snapper), and Blue Fish (Bluefish). Visitors will learn cooking and seafood shopping techniques from culinary masters: Jose Duarte of Taranta Restaurant, Alexis Girhiny of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Chris Kanaple of Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel, and Tyrone Todman of the New England Aquarium.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. rain or shine on the Harborwalk behind the New England Aquarium, Central Wharf, Boston. The event is free and open to the public.

Presale: Quidam - Now!

5/31/2011 09:59:00 PM 0 Responses
I've seen a lot of Cirque du Soleil Shows.  And out of all of them, Quidam was my favorite.  It's the only one that I went out and bought the dvd - mostly for the music.

A protected pre-sale for Quidam's tour in Boston in September just started.  It runs through this upcoming Sunday.  No password needed, you just need to go through this link that I was sent.

Quidam is the ninth stage show produced by Cirque du Soleil. It premiered in April 1996 and has now been watched by millions of spectators around the world. Quidam originated as a big top show since its premiere in Montreal, but has since been converted into an arena format beginning with its 2010 tour in North America.

The entire show is imagined by a bored young girl named Zoé who is alienated and ignored by her parents. She dreams up the whimsical world of Quidam as a means of escaping the monotony of her life.

If you've never been to a Cirque show, I definitely recommend you check this out.  And if you've been to one before, I STILL recommend you see Quidam.

I've seen Quidam, Dralion, Mystere, Ka, O, Zumanity, and a few others that I can't remember and Quidam was def my fave.

If anyone is in that area on Tuesday or Wednesday and is able to snap some pics, send them over and I'll get them posted for all to see.

Quinault River Blueback Salmon @ Deauxave

5/25/2011 09:50:00 PM 7 Responses
I've never even heard of Quinault River Blueback Salmon.  But I'm a sucker for exclusive stuff, therefore this has picqued my interest.

Today through mid-next week ONLY Deuxave will be serving "Quinault River Blueback Salmon" – only available at 8 restaurants nationwide.

Chef Chris Coombs is thrilled at the arrival of his Quinault River Blueback Sockeye Salmon, which he considers to be the finest salmon in the world. The Quinault River Blueback Sockeye Salmon are only allowed to be fished one week a year with the maximum amount caught being just 500, this translates to only eight restaurants nation-wide serving the salmon for only one week.

Deuxave showcases this rare salmon in a Duo of Salmon featuring spring herb and citrus salmon sashimi and kiss-seared salmon served with dried flowers, horseradish cream, mint oil and black lava salt.

Sounds delicious.  I want some.

Using Police Scanners to Find Film Sites

5/24/2011 11:54:00 PM 0 Responses
This tip in from Bloggery reader Bill who has been following the moving filming in the area a lot closer than I have.

Two filmings are on-going. And the Signs will indicate which ones.

Here Comes the Boom is using "BOOM" and Ted is using "FLASH"

The filming [TED] was Wednesday and looks like they will be back, sometime later at the Corner of

Congress and A Streets [Bar or former Bar] Crews were staged on A, Congress, Summer [above] Seaport Blvd etc

Today [Thursday] they are in Chelsea [Ted] on Broadway in-front of St Rose [School & Church]

It's not known if they are using the Bldgs or some other near-by locations. Some of your Readers might be interested in some Info on the Productions, if they have a "Police Scanner" as we have found some of the Radio Channels for the two Crews.

Click (here) for frequency info.

Thanks Bill!

So, that beer that I wanted to have after my exam?  I didn't get to have it.  Either one of my roommates or my boss gave me their cold so I ended feeling pretty crappy by the end of the day Friday.  I slept most of the weekend and I'm feeling better (just in time to goto work ... ugh), but hopefully I will be up and running again to grab a beer for charity at the Heineken With A Heart event on Tuesday.

Outback Steakhouse is hosting a “Heineken with a Heart” fund-raising event benefiting Men with Heart. Guests will enjoy samplings of signature Outback Steakhouse appetizers and ice cold Heineken Brands.

All proceeds will benefit Men with Heart.

Thanks for all the good luck wishes last week. You'll be happy to know that I passed my exam and therefore get to keep my job. Some of you asked which exam it was, it was the Series 7. Not a particularly hard exam, the limiting factor was just finding time to study for it outside of work. Now I'm hoping for a short reprieve before i start studying for the series 63, 55, and 3.

Coming up this Thursday is the Revels & Perkins School for the Blind's 11th Annual Celebration of Spring.

Thursday, May 26, 2011, 7:30 pm
Perkins School for the Blind

On Thursday, May 19, 2011, the Beacon Hill Garden Club will once again host a walking tour of the Hidden Gardens of Beacon Hill. This ever-popular tour is the only day of the year that the public is invited to enter these private landscapes, which are not visible from the street.

Twelve gardens will be on tour this year. Complimentary beverages and tasty baked goods will be served all day at the Church of the Advent, where there will also be a gift boutique. The Beacon Hill Historic District offers a wide variety of places for lunch or snacks. Tickets are limited.
The Tour happens rain or shine.

WHEN: Thursday, May 19, 2011, 9 AM to 5 PM, rain or shine

Contest: Andersen Window Lock Giveaway

5/17/2011 10:41:00 PM 0 Responses
This one's for the homeowners out there.  Or I suppose also apartment renters that don't mind losing their security deposits.  Andersen Windows has launched a new product and they'd like to give a few away to Bloggery readers.

Andersen Windows, has a very cool new device that limits how far up a double hung window can go, limiting it to less than four inches. For kids in the house, and especially as windows are more open in spring and summer, I thought it might of interest to your readers.

Boston is an extremely strong Andersen market, and it is likely that many of your readers would have Andersen.  The device works on 400 Series, 200 Series and A-Series product lines from Andersen.

Each kit contains right and left upper sash devices with full installation instructions. The devices are to be installed on both sides of the upper sash, limiting the opening of the lower sash to less than 4 inches. Release of the device allows the sash to fully open for maximum ventilation or if escape and rescue is necessary. The devices automatically reset once the lower sash is returned to the closed position and will therefore stop at a less then 4 inch dimension when the sash is opened again.

Probably a good idea for folks with mischievous kids.

If you're interested in entering the contest, email me with subject heading "Andersen Windows".

As of right now, one winner will be chosen to receive devices for two windows.  They've offered me a set as well, but I'm going to see if I can give them away as well - so there may be two winners.

Deadline to enter is Friday 5/20 at 10pm EST.

Click (here) to visit the Andersen website.

Jamba Energy Winners!

5/16/2011 10:51:00 PM 0 Responses
Every morning for the past however long I've been working at my new job (about a month and a half), I wake up miserable and promise myself that I'll sleep earlier that night.  Until this week, it hasn't been happening.  Yesterday, I went to bed at 11pm, the earliest I've gone to bed since I can't even remember.  It worked though, I felt considerably better this morning.  So, I guess I'm going to have to just try to get more sleep rather than relying on caffeine.

This leads me to the the winners of last week's Jamba Energy Givewaway (here).  You guys put me to shame.  7 caffeinated drinks a day?  I'm pretty sure it would be the nonstop trips to the bathroom that would keep me up rather than the caffeine.  Anyway ... congrats to the following folks!

Alicia D.
Josh V.
Tim F.
Kathy B.
Alice Z.

Congrats!  I tried the apple flavored Jamba Energy drink the other day.  It was pretty tasty.  Significantly better than Red Bull.

Craft Beers @ Finale - 5/17 & 5/24

5/12/2011 10:41:00 PM 0 Responses
MMmmmMMMm beer.  I don't think I've ever considered pairing beer with dessert.  I usually just have beer FOR dessert.  But now I'm thinking about it.

Finale Desserterie & Bakery, Boston’s venerable sweet spot, explores the world of craft beer in two tasting events featuring a sampling of five flavored craft beers paired with some of Finale’s most decadent desserts. Executive Pastry Chef, Nicole Coady, has carefully selected desserts, which will enhance the sweeter accents in these beers.

Additionally, Erika Soucy from Great Brewers will discuss the five beers and their unconventional flavors such as Bosteels Tripel Karmeliet which exudes hints of banana, vanilla and bubble-gum, as well as Schneider Aventinus Eisbock, a vintage beer which reflects flavors of chocolate malt, vanilla and java beans.

Dessert pairings include:
· Lindeman’s Peche with a fresh Seasonal Fruit Tart
· Bosteel’s Tripel Karmeliet with Crème Brulee
· Wells Banana Bread with Boston Cream
· Schneider Aventinus Eisbock with Chocolate Symphony Squares
· Atwater Vanilla Java Porter with Chocolate Decadence\

Contest: Jamba Energy Giveaway

5/10/2011 10:49:00 PM 0 Responses
So, I'm working about 14 hour days now.  Which is quite painful.  I've graduated from my one cup of coffee in the morning to a supplementary caffeinated beverage in the afternoon to keep me going.  In celebration of caffeine, I'm teaming up with Jamba Energy (who I blogged about last week here) to do a giveaway.

We're giving away five 12-packs of Jamba Energy to five lucky winners.

Jamba Energy drinks provide consumers an all natural alternative to other energy drinks,” said Chad Patterson, marketing manager for Nestlé Jamba Energy. “Jamba Energy contains real fruit juice and natural caffeine, no artificial preservatives, flavors or colors, and no high fructose corn syrup—which is unique in the category.”

Email me with the words "Jamba Energy" in the subject heading.  And then in the body of the email, tell me how many caffeinated beverages you drink a day.  And if you like, which ones specifically.  I'm looking to diversify my portfolio beyond black coffee and diet mountain dew.   I'm considering tiger blood.......

Contest ends on Friday 5/13 at 10pm EST.

The Rock and Blues Concert Cruises 2011

5/10/2011 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
Is it just me or should May be warmer than this?  One of the summer events I always look forward to is the Rock and Blues Concert Cruises.  I try to round up as many friends as I can, don my nautical themed pashmina afghan (and flippy floppies), and then head out to enjoy the evening.

The 2011 series will take place aboard the Provincetown II operated by Bay State Cruise Company, creating an opportunity for outdoor concerts on larger performance decks.

This year’s series will include eight concerts including the return of Ryan Montbleau Band on Saturday, June 18 with very special guests Will Dailey and the Rivals. On Sunday, July 24, Booty Vortex will host a special Carnivale, bringing a new kind of pomp and circumstance aboard the Rock and Blues Concert Cruises.

The 2011 lineup also features an all-ages a capella cruise on Sunday, June 12. Legendary performers Ball in the House along with Overboard and and the YouTube sensation Ahmir. A portion of the proceeds from this cruise will be donated to Lucy’s Love Bus, an organization that brings comfort to children with cancer.

Other summer performances include a double bill of The Alternate Routes and Adam Ezra Group on July 10, the return of Beatlejuice on August 14 and a season finale party with Martha’s Vineyard-based Entrain and special guest Sun Jones on August 21. The summer kicks off June 5 with the Celtic sounds of Carbon Leaf and Enter the Haggis.

Animal Crackers @ Lyric Stage Company - Now

I've never seen a Marx Brothers anything.  I've read about them a lot.  But that's about it.  This could be my chance.  Animal Crackers just started playing at the Lyric Stage Company and is running until June 4th.

by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind

directed by Spiro Veloudos
musical direction by Catherine Stornetta
choreography by Rachel Bertone
scenic design by Brynna Bloomfield
costume design by Charles Schoonmaker
lighting design by John Malinowski

MAY 6 – JUNE 4, 2011

DESCRIPTION: Hooray for Captain Spaulding!

Hilarity ensues in this classic Marx Brothers musical when Mrs. Rittenhouse’s swanky house party honoring the African explorer Captain Spaulding is interrupted by the pilfering of a prominent painting. Screwball antics arise as the guests search for the thief, resulting in this “uproarious slapstick comedy” (New York Times). An adaptation of the original 1928 Broadway hit and classic 1930 film, this “madcap musical” (Chicago Tribune) features favorite songs including “Three Little Words,” “I Wanna Be Loved by You,” and others.

President Barack Obama is heading to Boston for a political fundraiser in a couple of weeks.

A Democratic official with knowledge of the event tells The Associated Press that the fundraiser is planned for May 18 at the Boston Center for the Arts in the city's South End neighborhood. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement had not yet been made.

It's the second time this year the Democratic president has made a trip to Boston. Obama is building up his campaign account ahead of his re-election bid next year.

Massachusetts is a Democratic stronghold. Gov. Deval Patrick is a friend of the president and one of his strongest political supporters.

Happy Friday everyone!

Ted Filming @ Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe - 5/12

5/03/2011 11:11:00 PM 1 Response
I haven't been keeping up with my movie filming, but you guys have been doing a good job of leaving comments whenever you spot one filming in the area.  Here's some advance notice on a film site.  Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe (one of my favorite breakfast spots) is going to be used in Seth MacFarlane's movie Ted (here) that is currently filming in town.

This is the famous turkey hash served at Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe, the legendary South End breakfast and lunch counter where the walls are hung with photos of celebrity patrons and you share tables with strangers. Look for Mark Wahlberg’s photo to be on display shortly. Wahlberg will be starring in Ted, a new comedy directed by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarland, which will be lensing in Boston next month. And Charlie’s will be one of the locations used in the shoot. Charlie’s will be closed to the public Thursday May 12 for the shoot and parking restrictions will be in place.

PS Mila Kunis is also in this movie.  Which means, you can pretty much guess where I'm going to be on the 12th.

Anna's Taqueria Makes it Into USA Today

5/03/2011 11:05:00 PM 0 Responses
I'm fairly convinced that if Anna's Taqueria had existed on campus when I was a student at MIT (like it does now) I would have gained a lot more weight than I did.  I wouldn't say that they've got the most authentic mexican food, but it's still pretty tasty.

Anna's Taqueria - Boston
A city known for clam chowder also can make an incredible burrito, Baldwin says. This mini chain offers up to 10 varieties of meat. "You pick what you want, then they make it right in front of you," Baldwin says. You can get a large burrito for a mere 90 cents more. Baldwin also swears by the spicy green sauce. "It has a lot of nice zip, but it's not going to blow your mouth off."

Congrats to Anna's.  I could use a burrito right about now.

Boston Restaurants on Grub Street's Top 101 Pastas

5/01/2011 11:46:00 PM 0 Responses
Grub Street picked the top 101 pastas in America a couple of weeks ago and a handful of them are from Boston. I'm psyched to see that Daily Catch made it on the list, I love their squid ink pasta, it's definitely one of my favorites. Here are the ones that made the list:

Craigie On Main's Farro cassarecce, Pork Heart Sausage and Sea Urchin Ragout
The Daily Catch's Squid-Ink Spaghetti
No. 9 Park's Prune-Stuffed Gnocchi
Vinny's Linguine with Clams and Red Sauce
