Contest: Win a Free $25 Seamless Gift Card

1/31/2011 01:23:00 AM 1 Response
It's been a long time since I've given anything away, so I guess this giveaway is long overdue.

The nice folks over at Seamlessweb are sponsoring this one and are giving away two $25 gift cards.   If you haven't heard of seamless, you should check them out.  The guys that I'm staying with in NYC, use them every single weekday to order dinner.  I'm not exaggerating.

After two successful years in New York City, SeamlessWeb is bringing its Free Coffee Days promotion to Boston! From February 1st – 4th, the online food delivery and takeout ordering service will hand out over 10,000 free cups of coffee all around the city from a SeamlessWeb branded truck.

To coincide with this promotion, SeamlessWeb is launching a social media photo sweepstakes where people can Tweet or post to Facebook a photo of their free coffee to win $100 in food. In addition, SeamlessWeb is offering new customers $5 off by using the code FREECOFFEE ($10 minimum purchase). Visit the Free Coffee Days site
to find the locations to receive your complimentary cup of joe and full details about the photo sweepstakes:

Besides handing out free coffee, SeamlessWeb
is always available for people to order delivery and takeout from over 380 restaurants in the Boston metro area.

Ok, so here are the rules.  This one's a little more complicated than usual.  Email me with the following information:

In the Subject Line:  Seamless Contest
In the Email Body:  How many cups of coffee do you drink per day?  And where do you get your coffee?

Everyone who emails me will get their name entered in a drawing for one of the two gift cards.  IF you want a 2nd entry, retweet my tweet about this contest and then include your twitter screen name in the email you send me.  I'll add your name in a 2nd time for the drawing.   Contest Ends on Monday 2/7 at 10pm EST.

Free Fish Taco @ Dorado Tacos - 1/31

1/28/2011 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Soooo, how about that snow, guys?  I went out and bought a new pair of snow boots today because if there's one thing I really hate, it's trudging through the slush without waterproof shoes - resulting in wet socks.  Gross.

On to happier things, like free fish tacos.  I checked out their website, these guys do it right.  I love fish tacos, but only when the fish is fried.  Grilled fish tacos just aren't the same.  Thanks to the folks at Dorado Tacos and the folks at, we can all get a free taco this upcoming Monday - 1/31.

Because there is little in Boston that's as delicious as a Dorado Baja California style fish taco, Signpost and Dorado are teaming up to give you one for free. On Monday, January 31st from 5:30pm-8:00pm, stop by Dorado and if you are a Signpost member, you will get a free Ensenada fish taco.

I think the best fish tacos I've ever had would still have to be from southern California.  But, I've got high hopes for these.

Click (here) for more details on how to get your free taco.

However, Marcus quickly finds himself at odds with the organization he once embraced, whose members suspect he orchestrated the slaying of their former comrade-in-arms. Sam Adams Brewery Tour & Infinium

1/24/2011 11:35:00 PM 0 Responses
Media rep DanDan swung by the Sam Adams Brewery last week for a tour led by Jim Koch himself and also got a sneak preview of their new Infinium beer.  Here's what he had to say:

I stopped by the original Sam Adams brewery to get a backstage tour of the Boston Brewery from founder Jim Koch, along with a sneak peak at their new offering, Infinium. As a home brewer (and beer drinker!) myself, I understand how difficult it is to make a completely new beer style that adheres to the German Beer Purity Law, that nothing can go into a beer besides the four basic ingredients: barley, hops, yeast and water. Through three years of collaboration with the world's oldest brewery, Weihenstephan, Koch and Dr. Josef Schradler have done it (and their work has actually resulted in a patent!). The result is a crisp, champagne-like beer, with hints of fruit (banana? apples? grapes?) and a unique, malty finish. Definitely unlike any beer I've tried before, and without doubt something worth trying, especially for the craft beer drinking novice! And, if you haven't had a chance to check out the home of the America's largest craft brewery (clocking in at right around 1% of the overall market), you should see where these world class beers are made.

To infinium and beyond!  Ok that was a bad pun.  But, not as bad as some other ones that I know.  What do you call a midget psychic that has escaped from prison?  A small medium at large.  ZING!

Dropbox Online Storage

1/24/2011 11:31:00 PM 3 Responses
I've had lots of online storage accounts in the past, I would sign up and then totally forget about them.  But I just recently downloaded Dropbox and it's been pretty useful.  There's an application that I downloaded onto my macbook and then an app that I downloaded onto my iPhone and I've been using it to store magazines and books (pdfs) to read - I've been reading a lot of finance/interview books lately.

Then, one of my friends got sick and a bunch of us decided to put together an online scrapbook of photos, and so everyone uploaded photos to a shared folder on dropbox so that we could put the scrapbook together quickly.  Pretty useful.

They give you 2GB for free.  I recommend you check it out.

If I was willing to pay the $200 a year for 100GBs, I'd use that to host all my music rather than my desktop server.  More convenient and probably a lot safer in terms of backup.

I'm already expecting backlash from this post, but I'm going to post it anyway because I've listened to the Pretty Reckless cd and I think it's actually pretty good.  I remember posting about Nickelback tickets a couple years ago and one reader told me that I have terrible taste in music and that I should drink bleach and die.  Harsh right?  I thought so.

Julianne Moore Wins Hasty Pudding Award - 1/27

1/18/2011 11:04:00 PM 1 Response
I'm trying to remember the last movie I saw with Julianne Moore in it, and can't think of one.  Was she in something with Pierce Brosnan?  Actually, I was just reminded that she cameod on 30 Rock.  I remember that.  Well, she's going to be receiving the Hasty Pudding Award on 1/27.

Oscar-nominated actress Julianne Moore is being honored at Harvard University as the Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year.

The four-time Oscar nominee is to receive her pudding pot at a Jan. 27 roast by Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the nation's oldest undergraduate drama troupe.

Hasty Pudding Theatricals says Moore's talents extend beyond the film screen to her roles in Broadway productions and to her success as author of two children's book series.

Harvard Square is going to be hoppin next week.  I wonder who's going to get the men's version.

I remember seeing an episode of MTV Cribs that featured Rod Stewart's daughter. Other than that, I'm not familiar at all with his music.  I'm sure there are some old school songs that are his that I would recognize, but I can't name any off the top of my head.

Rod Stewart fans should know that an Amex presale just started for his concert in March at TD Garden.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape Dinner at Aura w/ Harry Karis - 1/20

1/12/2011 12:40:00 AM 0 Responses
When I quit my job to work on a couple of startup companies, I had to give up a bunch of luxuries.  One of those was wine ... my favorite type of which is chateaunef-du-pape.  So, I'm kind of excited about this chateaunef-du-pape dinner with Harry Karis that is coming up in about a week at Aura - 1/20.  Oh, and I'm also sad because I can't go.

Aura Chef Rachel Klein pays homage to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region and visiting author, Harry Karis and his book, The Châteauneuf-du-Pape Wine Book, with a multi-course menu featuring accompanying wines from the area (menu below).

Along with the cuisine, the highlight of the event will be a discussion with author Harry Karis. A self-described “late-bloomer”, Mr. Karis was fortunate to begin drinking more exclusive and rare wines in his late 30s. He ultimately became focused on the quality Southern Rhone wines, especially Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

WHO: Wine lovers, novices and experts alike!
WHERE: Aura restaurant, Seaport Hotel, One Seaport Lane, Boston
WHEN: Châteauneuf-du-Pape Wine Dinner featuring Author Harry Karis – Thursday, January 20th; 6 - 7 pm, cocktails & book signing, 7 - 9 pm, dinner & wine discussion

Châteauneuf-du-Pape WINE DINNER MENU

Pine Nut & Roquefort Tart
Young mache, truffle-honey vinaigrette
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos Mont Olivet (blanc)

Moulard Duck
Red quinoa, marcona almond, medjool dates, 5-spice
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Vieux Telegraphe
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Monpertuis, "Secret de Gabriel"

Duet of Lamb
Braised lamb shank & roasted lamb loin, parsnip puree, prunes, shaved grana padana, cinnamon olives, spinach
Cornas, Vielles Vignes, Alain Voge

Almond Cake
Confit Thai chili and pineapple, Beaumes de Venise sabayon
Muscat Beaumes de Venise, Baumalric

I've had both of the ones being served with the second course, they're both excellent.  I think my all time favorite though is one from Chateau de Beaucastel.  That one is amazing.

Free Entrance Days in the National Parks - 1/15

1/10/2011 11:14:00 PM 0 Responses
Probably still a little cold to be visiting national parks right?  Then again, what do I know; I'm not outdoorsy at all.  Coming up this weekend (MLK weekend) starts a series of free entrance days in a bunch of our national parks.

America's Best Idea – the national parks – gets even better with several fee-free days at more than 100 national parks that usually charge entrance fees.*

Mark your calendar for these fee-free days in 2011:

* January 15-17
(Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday weekend)
* April 16-24
(National Park Week)
* June 21
(First day of summer)
* September 24
(Public Lands Day)
* November 11-13
(Veterans Day weekend)

I clicked around and it looks like there's lots of parks in the MA area.  Although, I've been reading that tomorrow is going to be Snowpocalypse Part II.  Soooo, those parks might be rather snowy this weekend.

4th Annual No Pants Subway Ride - 1/9

1/07/2011 12:42:00 AM 0 Responses
Looks like I'm going to be walking wherever I need to go this upcoming Sunday - 1/9 - because it's apparently the 4th Annual No Pants Subway Ride.

The 4th annual No Pants Subway Ride in Boston will take place on Sunday, January 9th in the afternoon at 2pm at Alewife. Specifics may change between now and the event, so register at our Boston Flash Mob site for email updates.

You must arrive by 2pm to receive instructions and be assigned to a team. Wear 2 or more pairs of underwear to prevent embarrassing "wardrobe malfunctions" as well as to keep your bits from freezing! Bring a bag/large purse/backpack/tall hat/briefcase to hide your pants in when the event starts. To receive instructions and to be assigned to a team, just look for the people with the umbrellas that have an interrobang (see: symbol in profile photo ) on them.

There's more info on the site, and info regarding the afterparty as well.

Chestnut Hills Macy's Closing Sale - Starts 1/9

1/07/2011 12:33:00 AM 1 Response
I used to do about 90% of my clothing shopping at Macy's - at the Downtown Crossing one.  Looks for the next few weeks, though, that better deals may be had at the one in Chestnut Hill.  They're closing it down.

Macy’s said today that it is closing its store in the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center as part of an annual review process by the retailer. A final clearance sale at the store, which begins on Sunday, will run for about 10 weeks.

The only unfortunate thing is that I wear a pretty common size, soooo stuff will probably sell out quickly.  Too bad I'm not really skinny or really fat.  Ok, I guess rather miss out on a sale than be really fat.  That being said, I need new jeans.

$1 Chowder at Legals on 1/11/11

1/04/2011 12:35:00 AM 0 Responses
Did you know that January is National Soup Month?  I just found out.  Who makes these things up?  I was just browsing the internet for other sorta made up 'holidays' or whatever you call them and apparently there is an 'Eat Ice Cream For Breakfast Day' and also a 'Take Your Daughter To Work Day'.  Ok just kidding about that 2nd one.  That one's been around since I was a kid (and probably before that).

Just wanted to let you know that there will be $1 chowder available at Legal's next week.

In honor of National Soup Month in January, Legal Sea Foods will be declaring a ‘Legal’ Holiday on 1/11/11: “Chowda Day.” Available at all Legal Sea Foods locations for the duration of the day, $1 cups (with purchase of an entrée) of their signature New England Clam Chowder will be served up as they have been at every Presidential Inauguration since 1981. On 1/11/11, it makes perfect sense to share Legal’s #1 famous chowder for only $1 a cup.

I made sure to bold the "with purchase of an entree" part because I don't want anyone coming back to me and telling me that they went to Legal's trying to order 9 cups of chowder and got thrown out thanks to me.

Boston is the 8th Drunkest City in America

1/03/2011 12:17:00 AM 0 Responses
Probably a good thing that we didn't make the top of the list on this one. I'm happy for settling for top colleges and top running cities and other positive lists. We did however make it 8th on the list, which I personally believe shows that we're not wastoids, but we can still hold our liquor.

8. Boston, MA

Average drinks, per person, per month: 14.38
Percent of adults who are heavy drinkers: 7
Percent of adults who are binge drinkers: 20
Deaths per 100,000 residents from alcoholic liver disease: 1.3

I'm trying to decide if my friends and I fall into the heavy drinker category or the binge drinker category ... probably the latter.  Oh and if you're wondering, the #1 drunkest city is Milwaukee.

No More Alcohol Sales Tax = Happy New Year

1/03/2011 12:07:00 AM 0 Responses
Happy new year indeed. I hope this means my Glenmorangie and my Patron will be at least 6.25% cheaper.

Massachusetts shoppers soon will no longer have to pay the state's 6.25 percent sales tax on alcohol sold in stores. Come Jan. 1 the tax is set to disappear. Voters approved a ballot question in November eliminating the levy.

Alcohol was exempt until 2009 when lawmakers expanded the sales tax to include beer and wine sold in stores and use the extra revenue to help fund substance abuse programs.
