Tara & Alcides Coming to The Estate - 9/4

8/31/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
I haven't been terribly impressed with any shows lately:  True Blood, Mad Men, Entourage ...  That doesn't mean I'm still not watching though.  Hopefully they're just having an off season.  That being said, if there are those of you that are interested in possibly meeting Tara and/or Alcides from True Blood this weekend would be the time to do it at The Estate.

The Real Inspector Hound - Starts 9/2

8/31/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
Methinks it might be time for me to get some culture.  I haven't seen a Tom Stoppard play live since ... well actually ever.  Come to think of it, the only one I've seen is Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and that one was the movie version.

Characters and conventions collide in Tom Stoppard’s layered and witty indictment of the English "whodunnit", merging murder mystery clichés with a satirical send up of insouciant newspaper critics that results in a hilarious cautionary tale for all who put their ego ahead of Art.

The Real Inspector Hound performs September 2 – 25, 2010 (Previews are September 2 – 5) at the BCA Plaza Theatre, 539 Tremont Street, South End Boston. Performances are Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 - Fridays at 8, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm, and Sundays at 3pm.

DanDan's going to check it out next week and report back to us.  I'm going to try to see it hopefully towards the end of the month before the show ends.

Free Red Sox Roll @ Basho During Games

8/30/2010 12:05:00 AM 0 Responses

My go to place for sushi for the last year or so has been Fish Market out in Allston/Brighton.  But, I'm a fan of free stuff like anyone else.  Basho is currently offering a free 'Red Sox Roll' during home and away games this season.

Basho welcomes fans back to Fenway Park with a free Red Sox roll. A traditional California roll garnished with a big red tobiko “B” for Boston, the Red Sox roll is complimentary to all diners during home and away games through the Red Sox season.

If you need more reasons to stop by Basho for pre-game sushi and cocktails:

$4 validated parking for up to three hours after 5:00 pm. Available seven days per week – even during Red Sox home games.

$6 Basho Bar Bites: Between 3:30-6:30pm and 10:30pm-12:30am every day of the week (including Red Sox home games), choose from $6 sampler platters

$6 bar bites and a free Red Sox roll ... sounds like a decent deal to me.

La Roux @ House of Blues - 11/15

8/27/2010 01:23:00 AM 0 Responses
I saw La Roux in concert a few months ago, I thought the performance was fairly good.  It was surprisingly difficult to find people to go with me.  Thanks in part to the radio stations playing nothing but that one Bulletproof song over and over, I couldn't get anyone to give the rest of their album a try.

For those of you who aren't sick of her music yet, tickets go on sale today at 10am EDT.

Vintage Car Show BBQ at The Biltmore Bar & Grill - 8/29

8/26/2010 12:06:00 AM 0 Responses
I'm not a huge vintage car guy, but there are a few that I quite admire.  For instance, for those of you that are experts.  Which is better: a 1970 Pontiac GTO or a 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS.  Just curious as to what you think.  But I digress, what I wanted to talk about was the FREE Vintage Car Show and BBQ at the Biltmore Bar & Grill this Sunday - 8/29

Biltmore Vintage Car Show
Sunday August 29th at noon

Join the Biltmore for our First Annual Vintage Car Show Sunday, August 29th at noon. There will be a prize for "favorite of show" and a BBQ. Come and enjoy cool cars & cold beer.

I don't have too many details on the event (the website didn't have much either), but I think I saw somewhere that they're going to have 20+ classic cars there.  Sounds like it could be fun.  And free food is always a plus.

The Village People @ The Ocean Club - 8/28

8/25/2010 12:05:00 AM 1 Response
A friend of mine from high school, without fail, likes to get drunk and sing YMCA every time we go karaoke.  That being said, I'm kind of amazed that the Village People are still performing.  Well, apparently they are and they're going to be in town this weekend at The Ocean Club.

Disco favorites the Village People play a special show at The Ocean Club at Marina Bay on Saturday, August 28th at 8:00 pm. Doors will open at 5 pm with special guest Dick and Jane opening for the iconic act.

Would this be considered an 80's night event? Or a 70's night event? When I think 80's, I usually think Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, or The Cure (or any other music that appears on the Wedding Singer soundtrack).  I'm curious to see what the crowd will be like that turns up.

Pinkberry Now Open in Hingham

8/23/2010 12:10:00 AM 0 Responses
Is the frozen yogurt craze still going on? I kind of think it's done; along with cupcakes. But that's just me. The new one that seems to be sprouting up all over the country is gourmet food trucks. For those of you that are still eating frozen yogurt, Pinkberry just opened it's first location in the area in Hingham this past weekend.

Friday mark[ed] the opening of the new Pinkberry in the Derby Street Shoppes, the first of the chain's shops in Massachusetts. A second will launch on Newbury Street, and a third is in the works for Harvard Square, according to Pinkberry CEO Ron Graves.

I wonder if there will be huge traffic jam in Hingham to get Pinkberry the way there was when Sonic opened up in Peabody.  Anyone make it out there yet to check it out?

Ice Cream Showdown This Weekend!

8/20/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
So I was at a tradeshow in Toronto this past week and found myself craving a chipwich.  I have yet to have my chipwich, but it looks like I may get my chance this weekend at the Ice Cream Showdown.

Last year, on a hot August afternoon, the first Ice Cream Showdown was held. It went so well, it seemed only fair to do another. This year, however, we're trying something new and doing it on TWO DAYS in TWO different places.

On Saturday, August 21, in Union Square, Somerville, Ice Cream Showdown North will take place with Stonyfield, Chilly Cow Custard, JP Licks, Christina's, Toscanini's, Picco. This will be in the parking lot next to Grand at 374 Somerville Ave from 2-4 PM.

On Sunday, August 22, in SoWa, Boston, Ice Cream Showdown South will take place with Stonyfield, Toscanini's, Picco, Batch, Coop's MicroCreamery, Chilly Cow Custard and Christina's. This will be on Harrison Ave as part of the SoWa Art Market from 2-4 PM.

I hope they have chipwiches.

Deutsche Bank Championship - Starts 8/31

8/19/2010 12:03:00 AM 1 Response
Who wants to see Tiger Woods play some mediocre golf live?  Ok, so he's still way better than most normal people, but boy has his game gotten a little inconsistent lately.  Coming up in a couple of weeks is the Deutsche Bank Championship in Norton, MA and tickets are still available.

The Deutsche Bank Championship is New England’s premier PGA TOUR event, held over Labor Day weekend at the TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. Since its inception, the Deutsche Bank Championship has raised nearly $17 million for the Tiger Woods Foundation and New England-area charities.

In 2010, the Deutsche Bank Championship will feature the top 100 PGA TOUR golfers as they compete in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup and for the $10 million first prize. Defending champion, Steve Stricker is expected to take on the world's best, including our distinguished list of past champions - Adam Scott, Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson - and many more.

The b.good Family BBQ for Sidewalk Sam - 8/15

8/13/2010 01:03:00 AM 0 Responses
I went to Five Guys yesterday for a burger.  It was delicious.  It made me want more burgers.  And coming up this weekend is a good opportunity to get some - and it's for a good cause too!  This Sunday, 8/15 is b.good's 7th annual family bbq.

Ever since we started our business, we've always closed our restaurants early one day every summer and invited our family to eat, drink, dance and sing with people who grind their burgers.  So, this Sunday is our 7th annual family BBQ.

We'll have tons of local food, local beer, local music, & local art.  And this year, we're turning our party into a way for us to help our friend and fellow family member, Sidewalk Sam and his foundation, ArtStreet.

A ticket gets you burgers, veggie burgers, hot dogs, corn, salads, ice cream, shakes, a beer, live music, and live sidewalk art.

In SOWA Sundays Open Market
500 Harrison Ave
Boston, MA
Sunday 8/15 - 1:00pm - 6:00pm

Tax Free Weekend This Weekend - 8/14 & 8/15

8/13/2010 12:55:00 AM 0 Responses
People tend to go a little crazy on tax free weekends I've got a different stance.  First off, I want to make sure you're all aware that it's this upcoming weekend (8/14-8/15) but personally I would recommend that you only buy stuff that never goes on sale.

Because saving 6.25% is not nearly as good as you could do if you just waited for something to go on sale.

The measure that will let shoppers avoid paying the state's 6.25 percent sales tax on goods like televisions and back to school items costing up to $2,500 on Aug. 14 and 15 was part of a larger economic development bill the Legislature gave final passage to on Saturday.

Does anybody know if it's no tax on anything or just certain categories?  I'm just wondering because LV stuff or Gucci stuff never goes on sale right?  That might be an option for those of you who are into luxury handbags.  Personally, I don't plan on buying anything.

I looked up the list of parks in Massachusetts, here they are:

Cirque Du Soleil at Royale - 8/14

8/12/2010 12:04:00 AM 2 Responses
Interesting little event coming up this weekend.  I can't tell from the description if it's going to be actual Cirque performers or if it's just a Cirque "inspired" event, but either way it should prove to be more interesting than a regular night out clubbing.

On August 14th, Royale nightclub will celebrate OVO by Cirque du Soleil performing in Boston with a night “under the big top.” This nouveau cirque inspired event pairs Boston’s premiere nightclub with the Cirque du Soleil phenomenon, for a night of dazzling surprise performances, special guests, and cocktails inspired by the latest Cirque du Soleil show to hit Boston. Royale will bring the essence of Cirque’s captivating OVO production to the dance floor, inviting guests to experience the wonder and amazement of the Cirque du Soleil experience.

I used to go to Cirque every time they were here in town.  But as of last year, I sort of stopped.  Tickets have gotten a lot pricier, and I had already seen O in Vegas that year.  Haven't decided yet if I'm going to see Ovo.

$5 Champagne Cocktails @ Assaggio and Cafe Pompeii

8/11/2010 01:28:00 AM 0 Responses
The North End used to be one of my go to places to take dates.  It probably still would be if I ever went on dates anymore.  I'd probably start with dinner at Giacomo's (I love their lobster fusili), dessert at Mike's (I love their boston creme pie) and then follow up with champagne cocktails at Assaggio or Cafe Pompeii now that they've got their $5 'Bubble Bar' deal going on.

Every night from now through Labor Day, Assaggio and Café Pompeii will be offering specialty champagne cocktails from their ‘Bubble Bar’ at only $5 a flute. Offerings include, but are not limited to: Bellini, Kir Royale, Champear, Black Velvet, French 75.

Every night, through Labor Day, 6pm – Midnight

$5 a flute (available at the bar only).

Someone always yells at me for not providing addresses to the restaurants/bars that I blog about.  Yelp them or Google them.  It's not that hard.

100th Annual Fisherman's Feast - Starts 8/12

8/11/2010 01:15:00 AM 0 Responses
Wow.  So I get a lot of emails about the 5th annual something, or 20th annual something, but this is definitely the first 100th event.  Starting tomorrow and running through the weekend is the 100th Annual Fisherman's Feast in the North End.

Each August since 1910, the Feast has been held in Boston's historic North End on North and Fleet Streets, making it the North End's oldest continuously running Italian festival. The Feast traditionally starts on Thursday when the statue of the Madonna is moved from her home in the Fisherman's Club to a chapel at the center of the feast. This will be her home throughout the weekend.

Thursday is also when the fishermen that founded the Feast are remembered with a blessing of the fishing waters. Each night and during weekend days there is entertainment on the bandstand and vendors selling food (Italian sausages, calamari, pizza, pasta and much more) as well as crafts. The Feast culminates on Sunday night with the spectacular "Flight of the Angel".

Yum.  I haven't been to a festival in the North End in a while.

Princeton Review's Best 373 Colleges

8/10/2010 12:31:00 AM 0 Responses
So the 2011 edition of the Princeton Review's "Best 373 Colleges" book just came out and a few of our area colleges made it on the top of some of the lists.

Brown = the happiest students
MIT = the most studious
Bowdoin = the best fed
Harvard = the best library

Brown and the happiest students. I dunno about that one. But then again, I had a skewed sampling because all of my friends at Brown were suffering through the 8 year medical program. MIT definitely the most studious, I agree. Never been to Bowdoin so I can't really say, but I'm guessing MIT had to be on the low end of that one. Food there was awful when I was a student. At least now they have an Anna's Taqueria in the student center. And lastly, I never saw the inside of Harvard's libraries. I think if you weren't a student, you weren't allowed in. They do have a dining hall that looks like it's straight out of Hogwarts. I wonder if there was a category for that.

Filled with spectacular costumes and high energy dance numbers, the story is told through a variety of musical styles - everything from country to calypso to rock 'n' roll.

Yes, you have to wait two weeks until our Bloggery Tweet Up event, but in the meantime here's one from the folks at Stuff going on tonight.  I hear there's going to be free amstel light.

Interesting bit of trivia, I read somewhere that we can only get amstel light in the U.S. because Heineken (they own Amstel) didn't want regular Amstel competing with Heineken sales here.

Beantown Bloggery Presents: Tweet Up Tuesday - 8/17

8/04/2010 12:03:00 AM 2 Responses
This is a first for the Beantown Bloggery.  We're cohosting an event at the Lansdowne Pub in two weeks and we want you all to be there.  Do me a favor and tell all your friends about it.  If all goes well, perhaps this hosting of nightlife events could become a regular thing.

We're partnering up with The Lansdowne Pub to cohost their August 17th Tweet Up Tuesday Event.

The Lansdowne Pub launched a new weekly event series called Tweet Up Tuesdays back in July and coming up in two weeks The Beantown Bloggery is going to be hosting!

Twisted Tea tea will be there with free samples and will also be giving away some free stuff. One lucky attendee will win a “twisted” event (paintball, fishing, kayaking, etc.)

Free stuff, live music, no cover, and a chance to meet some of the Beantown Bloggery crew. What's not to love?

Tweet Up Tuesday w/ The Beantown Bloggery
The Lansdowne Pub
9 Lansdowne Street
Boston, MA 02215

Click (here) to RSVP so we make sure there's enough food.

PS.  You'll recognize Bloggery media rep DanDan from his telltale vest and remarkable resemblance to Disney's Aladdin.

PPS.  He doesn't like it when you call him a street rat ... but feel free to do it anyway.

Came across a fun little image gallery from the Ben & Jerry's Plant in Vermont. And figured I'd post a few shots seeing as how they're going to be around for most of August giving out free samples (here).

So I just wanted to take a minute to say thank you to all of you who read my post from a couple of months ago and voted for Callanan & Klein (here) to win the Comcast Productivity at Work contest.  I just heard that they won and it was thanks to readers like you.

Callanan & Klein Communications, a boutique public relations and event marketing company based in Newton, MA has been selected as a Grand Prize winner in the Comcast Business Class and Inc. magazine Productivity@Work Contest. The firm will receive office productivity upgrades—including a prize package with two-year Comcast Business Class Internet and TV packages, equipment upgrades, software and training, plus additional business tools.

It's folks like Adam and Erin that flood my inbox (in a good way) with all sorts of Boston news and events so that I can in turn put it up on the 'ol Bloggery for you guys.

Svedka Vodka & Jose James @ Woodward - 8/3

8/02/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
The last time I was at Woodward, I was drinking whiskey exclusively ... mostly bourbon and rye cocktails.  This time around it looks like it's vodka time.

Giant Step Presents the second installment of our 2010 SVEDKA Vodka Sessions with a Special Performance by José James with guest DJ Anastasie, on Tuesday, August 3rd, at Woodward at Ames, a Morgans Original.

José James has been dubbed by some as the Jazz Voice of a generation. With his smooth baritone voice, his deeply rooted knowledge of Jazz mixed with an R&B flare, José is re-educating people on what it means to love Jazz.

Tuesday, August 3 2010
Woodward at Ames, Boston MA
