Restaurant Week Boston August 15 - 20 & 22 - 27

7/30/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
They should actually call it Restaurant Week(S) nowadays seeing as how they run it for two weeks at a time.

Restaurant Week Boston® is brought to you by the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau and American Express. Twice a year in March and again in August area restaurants design special 3-course prix fixe menus for lunch and dinner. A 2-course lighter lunch was initiated in 2009.

August 2010 is the 10th anniversary of Restaurant Week Boston®! Restaurants will be serving the prix fixe meals from Sunday, August 15 through Friday, August 20 and Sunday, August 22 through Friday, August 27, 2010. Diners will enjoy 2-course lunches for $15.10, 3-course lunches for $20.10 and 3-course dinners for $33.10 throughout Boston, Cambridge, the suburbs and beyond.

It's only a couple weeks away so I'm assuming they should be taking reservations by now.  Get going.

Free Tours of the Paramount Center

7/29/2010 02:17:00 AM 1 Response
I've watched the refurbishing or rebuilding of the Paramount Center as it happened over the years seeing as how I spent the last 3 years living in either chinatown or downtown crossing.  And I hafta say, it looks pretty darn nice on the outside.  Well, here's your chance to see it on the inside.

ArtsEmerson: The World On Stage announces free public tours of Emerson College’s Paramount Center, a cornerstone in the revitalization of downtown Boston. The facility includes the beautifully re-imagined 590-seat Paramount Theatre, the versatile, intimate Black Box Theatre, which can seat up to 150 people; the state-of the art 170-seat Bright Family Screening Room, as well as the scene shop rehearsal studios and soundstage, which allow for the development of new work.

Tours will be given on Wednesdays through the summer at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., production permitting. People wishing to tour the facility MUST make a reservation. Reservations can be made by EMAIL ONLY, and must be received by 5 p.m. on the Monday preceding the tour date. Reservation requests must be made to tours@artsemerson.org. Reservations will not be accepted by phone. Patrons will receive details about meeting place by return email.

Ok so, the times make it a little tough to make for those of us with jobs.  But perhaps I can send media rep DanDan to check it out.  He's a grad student and as we all know, those guys don't do anything during the day anyway.

M.C. Escher at the Museum of Science - NOW!

7/28/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
I was a big fan of M.C. Escher when I was younger. I can remember when we were studied him in school and were all given assignments to try to draw something in his style. I failed miserably. But it looks like I may get a chance to redeem myself at the MC. Escher exhibit that's currently showing at the Museum of Science.

Inside the Mind of M.C. Escher, an exhibit of sixteen high-quality Escher reprints. Ten percent larger than Escher's jewel-like originals, these reproductions maintain the impact of Escher's carefully drafted alternative worlds while allowing visitors to examine them in greater detail. The collection of mind-bending artwork incorporates the mathematical concepts of symmetry, plane geometry, and spherical and hyperbolic geometry.

Within the gallery, hands-on activities invite visitors to explore some of the optical phenomena that fascinated Escher, such as tessellations and sphere reflections. Visitors may investigate Escher's 1935 "Hand with Reflecting Sphere," and will then have the opportunity to try the artwork themselves.

12th Annual Roxbury International Film Festival - 7/29

7/27/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
The Roxbury International Film Festival is back and it's looking bigger than ever.  With 50+ films to offer, I'm sure everyone can find something that they're interested in.

The 12th Annual Roxbury International Film Festival (RIFF) kicks off Thursday, July 29th and runs through Sunday, August 1st. We will screen more than 50 films including features, shorts, documentaries and youth-produced works over four days. This year's festival offers a dynamic mix of entertainment networking, international film screenings and community-based programming for families and filmmaking enthusiasts.

Screenings will be held at various venues in and around the Roxbury community:
• Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
• Massachusetts College of Art
• Roxbury Center for Arts at Hibernian Hall
• Annex Auditorium at Wentworth College
• The Haley House Bakery Café

I just watched the trailer for Children of Invention.  It looks interesting.  And I always love movies filmed in Boston, so that's a plus.

Kadawatha @ Honda Civic Tour - 7/28

7/26/2010 11:09:00 PM 1 Response
Bloggery media rep dwillens is usually my go to guy in regards to hearing about new indie bands.  I listen to a lot of music, but he listens to A LOT of music.  This time, though, it was via email that I heard about Kadawatha - who's going to be at the Honda Civic Tour tomorrow at the Comcast Center - 7/28.

I'm reaching out to you on behalf of one of our pop-rock artists, Kadawatha, who is coming through Mansfield, MA on July 28th as part of the Honda Civic tour featuring Paramore, New Found Glory, and Tegan and Sara. This is the first major U.S. tour for the independent pop-rock band based out of Sri Lanka.

I swung by their myspace page and am listening to a few of their songs while blogging. They're pretty good. Oh, and I also checked and there's still pretty good seats available for the Honda Civic Tour if you guys are interested in seeing them live.

Free Beverage or App at Tamo Bar - Until 7/28

7/26/2010 02:30:00 AM 0 Responses
I had no idea when Mad Men was coming back until I got this email.  And then I totally forgot to dvr it while I was out of town.  I'll just hafta catch it later.  Tamo Bar at the Seaport is celebrating by giving anyone with the right hat a free drink or appetizer.

Anyone game enough to come to Tamo bar and terrace between Friday, July 23rd and Wednesday, July 28th sporting a Fedora or Pillbox hat gets their choice of a free 1960’s themed beverage or appetizer!

“Consider your drink shaken not stirred at the Seaport,” says Food and Beverage Director William Hacking. “The Mad Men mixology we’re serving up at Tamo bar and terrace and Aura restaurant oozes sixties style. Stop by for a MadTini - a 2010 spin on the 1960s favorite, the Madhattan, Seaport’s version of a Manhattan, and our New Old Fashioned.”

I dunno about the New Old Fashioned.  Because 'new' usually means there's fruit in it ... which I dislike.  An old fashioned should have nothing but the following:  rye whiskey, sugar, angosturra bitters, and an orange peel for garnish.  From what I've been told by bartenders, that's an old old fashioned.  Time to make a field trip out there and check it out ... after I find my fedora.

7/21/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses

Calling all Red Sox fans.  For those of you that are interested in collecting some Red Sox gear, David Ortiz is auctioning off some great stuff this week for charity.

With one of the biggest swings in baseball, David Ortiz hit 32 Home Runs in the 2010 Home Run Derby and took home the title. Now, fans and collectors across the country have the opportunity to own the gear used by David Ortiz during the Derby.

Showing that he also has one of the biggest hearts in the game, David Ortiz will auction off the bat, cleats and batting gloves he used to make history as the first Red Sox Slugger to hold the title. All proceeds raised in the auction will benefit the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, a non-profit organization committed to providing critical pediatric services to children in New England and the Dominican Republic.

Free Ben & Jerry's For A Month! - 7/28

7/21/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
It's like a combination of Ben & Jerry's free scoop day and that Kogi food truck in LA that tweets it's location.  Starting on 7/28 next week, the Ben & Jerry's Scoop Truck is going to be driving around Boston doling out free samples.

Bostonians can beat the heat and avoid Cape traffic by staying in Beantown this summer. Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Truck will be keeping things cool by giving out thousands of free euphoric scoops of ice cream from July 28 through August 25. The highly-coveted Scoop Truck will be making stops at community events, parks, offices and beaches in the greater Boston area.

Bostonians will be treated to endless free scoops of Milk & Cookies and Boston Cream Pie, two of Ben & Jerry’s recent flavor creations.

Boston cream pie ice cream sounds kind of awesome.  It makes me want to go buy a pint of vanilla ice cream and a boston cream pie donut from DD and eat that for dinner.

AA Partners with Jetblue

7/20/2010 12:43:00 AM 0 Responses
Well this would have come in handy last year, before all my Jetblue True Blue points (or whatever they're called) expired.  After Circuit City went bankrupt, I stopped flying to Richmond, and that was pretty much the only time I flew Jetblue.  Anyway, A new partnership between AA and Jetblue is underway.

American Airlines said Monday its partnership with JetBlue will begin Monday, allowing the two airlines to connect customers to 18 domestic markets where they previously did not compete.

Additionally, the two companies have agreed to a frequent flyer deal in which JetBlue TrueBlue fliers will be able to earn miles through American’s AAdvantage program, and American fliers can earn points from certain JetBlue flights.

According to the article, Boston and NYC are the two hubs where most of the partnering will take place.

Winners: $25 to Clevergreen Cleaners

7/19/2010 01:34:00 AM 0 Responses
Thanks to everyone who entered the latest Bloggery contest to win a $25 gift certificate to Clevergreen Cleaners in celebration of their newest Kendall Location opening (here).

What sets Clevergreen apart from other local dry cleaners? The family-owned growing business use a “green” process to clean clothing, with a biodegradable cleaning solvent that is gentler on garments than traditional practices. But owners Farshad and Roxane Sayan strive to keep their business eco-friendly in more ways than one. They also recycle steam from the boiler to heat water, use energy efficient lighting in stores, and use a manual sorting and assembly system to reduce energy consumption.

For those of you that are interested in the results of my little survey question approximately 50% of entrants can iron.  25% said they can iron but hate doing it.  25% are in the same boat as me and can't iron.  Maybe I should have taken home ec in high school rather than AP US history.

The winners are:

Lauren V
Neal D
Priya G

CONGRATULATIONS!

7/19/2010 01:22:00 AM 0 Responses
Looks like this week is going to be a week of local books for me.

One of the book publishers out there sends me books every once in a while to read/review and I just got one that's by a local author and is set in Cape Cod. I'll let you guys know once I get a chance to read it. But in the meantime, Christopher Klein is going to be in town this Thursday for a book signing.

Meet the Author of Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands: A Guide to the City’s Hidden Shores

Christopher Klein, author of Discovering the Boston Harbor Islands, will sign books and talk about the fascinating history of the harbor islands. Think: pirates, pilgrims, shipwrecked sailors, and prisoners of war. The public is welcome to attend this event, hosted by the Community Boating Boathouse, located right on the Esplanade. The event is Thursday July 22, from 6:30PM-8:30PM. The public is welcome to attend this free community event.

Vote for Boston for VH1 Do Something Award!!!

7/16/2010 01:22:00 AM 0 Responses
So the deadline to vote for Boston to win the VH1 Do Something Award is 7/19 so if you haven't voted yet, you need to do it NOW.

Also, I talked a lot of smack about Kansas last time (here) and people from Kansas commented, so I'm not going to do that this time.  All I'm going to say is.  If you are reading this and you live in Boston, it's your civic duty to vote.  Consider it like jury duty but not nearly as boring or horrible.

The DoSomething Awards honor those who are making a difference in the world. VH1 and DoSomething have nominated Boston because of the city’s commitment to transforming children’s lives through innovative education. There are an additional four cities in the running to win under the same category.

Click (here) to vote.

PS.  To those of you that are friends with me on Facebook.  If you don't vote, I will unfriend you.

Red Bull 2on2 Revolution - 7/17

7/14/2010 12:55:00 AM 1 Response
Before I start, I'd just like to say that I just came back from watching a sneak preview of Inception and they showed the trailer for The Town (here) and it looks AMAZING!  I couldn't find the trailer online, but as soon as I do, I'll be sure to post it.  Now on to my post....

I can't remember the last time I touched a basketball.  It was either when I joined a friend at his weekly coworker basketball game, or it was a the time I played a one on one pickup game with some ginormous dude at the Sports Club LA.  Either way, it's been a while.  For those of you who are a little more athletically inclined, the Red Bull 2 on 2 Revolution is going on this Saturday - 7/17

The Red Bull 2on2 Revolution was inspired by the way NBA star and Red Bull Athlete Rajon Rondo plays the game – with all-out aggression, all the time. The tournament goes beyond traditional scoring by awarding premiums for all-around play. A new scoring system will award teams for attacking and dominating every aspect of the game. Teams will not only be awarded two points for baskets, but will also be awarded three points for steals, dunks over defenders, pinning shots on the backboard, blocked dunks, and making defenders lose their balance.

In a partnership with two of the premier basketball magazines in the world, Dime Magazine and Bounce Magazine, Red Bull 2 on 2 Revolution Boston is the first stop in a series of five tournaments to take place throughout the summer of 2010 along the East Coast. The winners of each competition will receive $2,000 and the honor of being named the Red Bull 2on2 Revolution Champions in their city.

WHO: Local aspiring basketball talent, 18+ years old from the Boston area.
WHEN: Saturday, July 17, 2010
WHERE: Jim Bradley Basketball Courts, Back Bay Fens.

Shoutout to Jenna & Barstoolsports.com

7/13/2010 01:09:00 AM 1 Response
To Jenna and the folks at Barstoolsports.com.  I know I'm late to the party on this one (I know this because 2.8 million other people have already seen the video on youtube; meanwhile I just saw it yesterday) But, I'm a big fan of sarcasm and I like the cut of your jib, so you deserve a shout out.

The video is somewhat NSFW, so if you're at the office, save it for home.  Or if you're not happy with your job, feel free to watch it now.  Or, I guess if you work in the IT department and don't plan on ratting yourself out feel free to continue.

There's actually an asian term used to describe this process, it's called 'ulzzang'  Look it up on youtube, that'll kill at least another 10 minutes of your day.

Jean-Georges Cooking at Market - Tonight!

7/13/2010 12:57:00 AM 0 Responses
If you've got dinner plans tonight, you may want to rethink them.  Oh, and if you haven't had a chance to eat at Market yet, I'd say tonight would be an ideal time to go.  That is if there are any reservations left.

World Acclaimed Chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, will make his return to Boston for the iconic French Holiday: Bastille Day on July 14, 2010. Located in the heart of Boston’s Theatre District on Stuart Street, Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Market debuted less than a year ago and recently won Improper Bostonian’s “Boston’s Best French Restaurant” in the July 7, 2010 Issue.

Born and raised on the outskirts of Strasbourg in Alsace, France, Jean-Georges' earliest family memories are about food. He trained in a work-study program at the Auberge de l'Ill and as an apprentice to chef Paul Haeberlin, later working with Paul Bocuse and master-chef Louis Outhier at L'Oasis in the south of France. With this impressive three-star Michelin training, Jean-Georges is the authority on French cuisine.

Jean-Georges will be in Boston July 13-14 and specifically cooking an authentic French menu for the night at Market.

He's going to be at an invite only event on the 14th, so tonight is your only chance unless you've got connections at the French Consulate......

Contest: $25 Gift Certificate to CleverGreen Cleaners

7/09/2010 01:03:00 AM 0 Responses
Here's one more skill I can add to the list of "things I cannot do" - that would be ironing.  I basically get my dress shirts laundered not because I can't do my own laundry but because I cannot successfully get wrinkles out of a shirt.  It's impossible.  I know there are some of you in the same situation as me, so this contest is for you guys.

Clevergreen Cleaners, which will open a brand new location in Kendall Square, Cambridge soon is giving away three $25 gift certificates to three lucky Bloggery readers.

To enter the contest, send me an email with subject heading "Clevergreen" and in the body of the email include your name and whether or not you can iron.  That second bit won't have any bearing on whether you win the drawing or not (everyone will have an equal chance), I'm just curious if I'm the only one out there that uses dry cleaners as an ironing service.

Contest will run until Friday 7/16 at 10pm EST.

Boston Beer Marathon 2010 - 7/10

7/09/2010 12:52:00 AM 0 Responses
I love pub crawls.  I haven't done one in a while.  I think the last one involved my friends Sean and Kerry.  Kerry ended up throwing up outside the Quizno's in Downtown Crossing.  Dear Quizno's, sorry about that.  But I digress.  Coming up this Saturday is the Boston Beer Marathon 2010.

Join us this year for a day of festivites.
Beer Marathon 2010, July 10th.
26 bars, 14 Hours. Drink Responsibly.

Last year was the fourth year of the Great Boston Beer Marathon and almost had 2000 people join us in this great Boston drinking event. Last year, the week before our event however the Guinness Book of World Record was shattered at almost 3,200 people by the people of Australia. If everyone who attended last year brings one friend we can do this and Bring the Guinness Record to America for largest pub crawl for the first time to the Best Drinking City in America.

According to the website the festivities start off at the House of Blues at 10:30am.  You know, I have a term that I use to describe the act of drinking at 10:30 in the morning ... I call it "breakfast."

So Bloggery media reps DanDan and Dwillens have decided to tackle the Boston Sandwich Register over at Grubstreet (here) and wanted to rub it in my face by emailing me pictures each time they have one.  I'm sure there are some of you out there that like food porn as much as I do so here's the first one.

7/08/2010 12:38:00 AM 2 Responses
Thanks to all the folks that entered last week's contest for a free copy of the 50th anniversary edition of To Kill A Mockingbird (here).  I swear I'm going to read it one of these days, but I just started studying some CFA stuff in order to get a crash course in finance so that's going to keep me occupied for a while.

The winners of the two books are:

Diane S.
Joe G.

Congrats to the two of you!  Hope you enjoy the book.

For those that didn't win, don't be too bummed, I've got another giveaway going up tomorrow.

Children of the World Charity Date Auction - 7/16

7/07/2010 02:08:00 AM 0 Responses
I'm trying to remember the last time I went to a date auction.  I think it was back when I was in college, my friends and I went to a BITSA auction to bid on one of our friends.  Coming up next week is the Children of the World Charity Date Auction.

Big Sister Association BMW Raffle

7/06/2010 12:54:00 AM 0 Responses
Who wants a chance to win a BMW while simultaneously supporting a good cause?

In May, Big Sister Association of Greater Boston kicked off the 22nd Annual BMW Raffle. Now through July 30, 2010 you can purchase a raffle ticket for just $100 to enter for a chance to win either a brand new 2011 red BMW 328i convertible (valued at $49,800) or $38,000 in cash! If you do not win the grand prize, you could still win one of three other fabulous prizes!

All proceeds from the BMW raffle go toward helping Big Sister Association of Greater Boston further our mission of helping girls realize their full potential by providing them with caring, female mentors.

The raffle drawing will take place Friday, July 30, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Faneuil Hall Marketplace (need not be present to win). Take a chance on Greater Boston’s girls!

I'm not sure a red convertible is really my style, nor can I really afford to pay for parking for a 2nd car downtown, but I'll cross that bridge if/when I get there.

HarborWalk Sounds on Thursdays - Starts 7/8

7/06/2010 12:46:00 AM 0 Responses
After all these years, I still haven't been to the ICA.  Mostly because I'm not a huge fan of Contemporary art.  When I do have time to go to a museum, I almost always end up at the MFA.  This may be a good reason to swing by though.  Starting this Thursday, HarborWalk Sounds will provide a series of free concerts at the ICA.

The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA) once again partners with the world-renowned Berklee College of Music to present HarborWalk Sounds, a wildly popular series of free summer concerts on the Boston waterfront. Showcasing some of the best new talent Berklee has to offer, HarborWalk Sounds takes place on the ICA’s stunning Putnam Investments Plaza (100 Northern Ave, Boston) from 6 – 8:30 p.m. on Target Free Thursday Nights in July and August. Relax on the harbor with a delicious drink from the ICA Water Café and hot sounds from the coolest music school around.

HARBORWALK SOUNDS CONCERT SCHEDULE

July 8 Sierra Hull (bluegrass mandolin prodigy)
July 15 Tais Alvarenga (Brazilian pop singer/songwriter)
July 22 Pinchback Blues (old-school urban blues)
July 29 Nini & Ben (Americana, folk)
August 5 Berklee Global Jazz Institute (jazz)
August 12 Tubby Love (reggae)
August 19 Eric Robertson and the Boston Boys (roots, folk, psychedelic)
August 26 Liz Longley (pop, acoustic)

Dodgeball of Boston

7/02/2010 12:05:00 AM 0 Responses
I got an email recently from the folks over at Dodgeball of Boston and felt a little nostalgic for that movie from a few years back with Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller.  A few of my friends joined a kickball league last year (I couldn't do it because I travel too much for work), so in my mind the next natural progression would be to give Dodgeball a shot.

Experience the thrill of indoor dodgeball on a padded sprung floor. The pure joy of tagging a member of the opposing team with a well placed throw, or diving to evade a barrage of fast moving balls cannot be explained. But it can be experienced at Dodgeball of Boston!

How is the game played? We use six foam balls covered with vinyl which are soft upon impact but are easy to throw. Each team consists of six players. The object is to hit the opposing players with a "live ball" (direct throw) in order to get them 'out'. Catching a live ball causes the thrower to be 'out'. Striking a player above the shoulders is not permitted and will also cause the thrower to be 'out'. The first team to eliminate the opposing team's players wins.

If people get their companies to come and play with us, they get $75 cash and a chance to win a free party event slot at our space!

I actually think I would like to experience the "pure joy" of tagging DanDan in the face.

Yay for Mimosas on Sunday Mornings

7/02/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
Ok, so I don't actually drink mimosas. And Sunday mornings are usually 'gatorade' mornings for me but I do appreciate the fact that we now have the option to drink on Sunday mornings if we so choose.

The new law, which was part of the $27.6 billion budget Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick signed Wednesday, allows restaurants to start serving alcohol at 10 a.m. on Sundays. The previous law did not allow alcohol to be served until noon.

The law takes effect immediately

But seriously, who wakes up before 1pm on Sundays?

Charity: Small Changes > Lifelong Results

7/01/2010 12:23:00 AM 0 Responses

This is an issue that's near to my heart (or should I say pancreatic beta cells ... sorry, nerd joke) because there's a whole lot of diabetes in my family.  So anything that we can do together to raise money to grow awareness is a good thing.

WHAT: As part of its Small Changes > Lifelong Results campaign, the Boston American Diabetes Association is asking residents to pledge to make a small change in their life that will have a big impact on their health. For every pledge collected at Harborfest and through Fruit2O’s page on Facebook®, Fruit2O will donate $1 to Boston’s American Diabetes Association organization, up to $5,000. The participating market that obtains the most pledges by August 15, 2010 will receive an additional $15,000 donation.

WHEN: Boston Harborfest
City Hall Plaza
Friday, July 2 through Monday, July 5

Hours:
Friday: 9:00a.m.-7:00p.m
Saturday: 9:00a.m.- 5:00p.m
Sunday & Monday: 9:00a.m.- 6:00p.m

You can post on their 8-foot tall pledge wall at Harborfest this weekend or do it online (here).

Contest: Win a Copy of To Kill A Mockingbird

7/01/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
You know what's strange?  I've always wondered about this, but I somehow made it through the public school system (in TX) having not read several books that are considered classics.  1984, Lord of the Flies, and To Kill A Mockingbird come to mind.  I still haven't read any of them.

Well, this year marks the 50th anniversary of To Kill A Mockingbird and the folks at Wiredset are giving away two copies of the 50th anniversary edition of the book.  There are also going to be events coming to the Boston area to celebrate the anniversary.  The first of which is coming up in two weeks.

To Kill a Mockingbird Celebration and Movie Screening

When: Wednesday, July 14, 2010
12:00AM - 11:00PM
Where: Brattle Theater hosted by Harvard Bookstore
40 Brattle Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Panel discussion followed by a screening of TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Panelists TBD

To enter the contest, send me an email with subject heading "To Kill A Mockingbird" and in the body of the email I'll need your name and address.  The books are going to be mailed directly to the winners.

Contest ends 7/7/10 at 10pm EST.

Looks like it's time to get off my butt, go to the library, and get a copy.  To all the children reading this entry, a "library" is a place where you can go to borrow books for free as long as you return them in 3 weeks.
