Wah Lum 40th Anniversary Kung Fu Show - 5/1

4/30/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
I always thought it would have been awesome to take kung fu as a kid.  I took karate briefly, but it just wasn't the same.  And then more recently, I took brazilian jiu jitsu for a while until my work travel schedule (for the day job) got in the way .

I guess I'll have to live vicariously through these guys.

Presale: Cirque du Soleil's OVO - NOW!

4/30/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
I love Cirque du Soleil.  A little less than I used not that tickets are crazy expensive, but I've seen all the ones that have come through Boston over the years ... and a few of the ones in Las Vegas.  Their new traveling show OVO comes to Boston from July 22 to August 15 and I just got an email that the Cirque Club Presale is going on right now.

OVO IN BOSTON
Opens on July 22, 2010
Under the Grand Chapiteau
Fan Pier, Pier 4, on Boston’s New Waterfront.

The Cirque Club is free to join, so I don't see any downside in joining so you can get access to tickets now.  Interesting that they're going to be at Fan Pier this time around.  All the previous times (if I recall correctly) they were always at Suffolk Downs.

Click (here) to get tickets.

PS.  After all these years, Quidam is still my favorite.

Privus Closing on May 2nd

4/28/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
I almost had a heart attack when I read this.  Not that I was super heart broken about Privus itself, parking was always awful in that area, but I almost thought I had lost my beloved Bon Chon (here).

According to Chowhound, though, the owners are going to relocate their Bon Chon franchise to Harvard Square.

Stopped in last week for some chicken and was told that they are closing in April or May, but that they were going to take the Bon Chon franchise to their new place- Bull Korean BBQ, on JFK, I believe where Shilla used to be. So bad news for Allston, good news for Harvard Sq. At least it's not disappearing from the Boston area altogether.

My thoughts exactly.  At least it's not disappearing from Boston altogether.  I have a few friends that used to drive all the way to NYC, gorge themselves on Bon Chon and then bring a few boxes back with them to keep in the fridge and eat over the next couple of days.  That's how much we like Bon Chon.

31 Cent Ice Cream at Baskin Robbins - TODAY!

4/28/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
I remember the days when my friends and I used to spend the afternoon walking (while I was in college) from Ben and Jerry's to Ben and Jerry's for their free cone day. Coming up this evening is something that's close. 31 Cent Ice Cream at Baskin Robbins from 5pm to 10pm.

Join us for 31 Cent Scoop Night at Baskin-Robbins® and help us honor America's firefighters.

The Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation is donating $100,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation™ (NFFF).
Participating stores will reduce prices of ice cream scoops to 31 cents*.

At some locations, you may also have an opportunity to make a donation to your local fire charities.

*Limit 3 2.5 oz scoops per person. At participating stores while supplies last.

To scoop or not to scoop. That is the question. I could really go for some cookies and cream right about now. Too bad I'm trying to lose weight.

Charity: Dining Out for Life - 4/29

4/27/2010 12:04:00 AM 1 Response
How often does eating out help you make a difference for others?  I'm guessing not often.  Well coming up this Thursday is your chance to do just that.  Boston's first ever Dining Out for Life is taking place and a dozen or so restaurants are getting together and donating for a worthy cause.

This Thursday Da Vinci Ristorante will take part in Boston’s first ever Dining Out for Life event. For this special night, Da Vinci and nearly a dozen other local restaurants will donate 25% of their total sales to local organization, Cambridge Cares for AIDS. Da Vinci will highlight this special occasion with their exceptional hospitality and a special guest host.

Da Vinci Ristorante will be taking part in Boston’s first annual Dining Out for Life event this Thursday. For one special night, Da Vinci and nearly a dozen other Boston restaurants (including KO Prime, Picco and Bambara, to name a few) will kindly donate 25% of their total sales for the evening to help local organization Cambridge Cares about AIDS (CCA) continue their cutting edge, community-based programming into the future.

As you can tell, the folks at Da Vinci are the ones who filled me in on this event, but obviously I'd like you to be aware of all the restaurants that are participating, so here's the list:

88 Wharf
Arbri Cafe
Bambara
Bombay Club
Da Vinci Ristorante
Friendly Toast
Ghazal Fine Indian Cuisine
Irie Jamaican Style Restaurant
KO Prime
Melting Pot
Picco
The Ruby Room

Note:  From the website, it looks like this event is only going on for dinner on 4/29.

Tata Nano at the Intercontinental

4/23/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
Bloggery Reader Jason swung by the Intercontinental to check out the new Tata Nano.  If I recall correctly, it's supposed to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $2500.

CLSA brought around the Tata Nano, and I received an invite.  I went to check it out as I was curious.  It was bigger than I thought it would be as I sat in it, and fit comfortably.  I did not realize it was a 4 seater either as I thought it would be like a smart car instead.  Now it does not have a trunk as the engine is there, and as you can see in one of the pics, the spare tire is in the front.  Also, it is a 4 speed which would not be a big deal except that the stick shift is on your left.  All in all, I came away a lot more impressed than I thought I would be as in my head I thought it would be teeny tiny.  Even 4 Americans could fit in it.  Much more than the golf cart on steroids that I was expecting.

I've been in a Smart Car and driven a Mini Cooper.  Small cars aren't for me, but I'd be interested to check this one out just for kicks.  And then go back to driving my Denali.

Brew Your Own Beer at Barleycorn

4/21/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
It's been a LONG time since I've brewed my own beer.  Nowadays I just don't have the space, but back in college, we had a huge basement and industrial kitchen that worked quite nicely.  Bloggery media rep DanDan recently recounted his experience at Barleycorn to me and it looks like it might be a good thing to check out.

I recently had a chance to stop by Barleycorn's Craft Brewery in Natick.  At Barleycorn's, you get to pick from a menu of beer and wine recipes and brew your own drinks.  All the ingredients and equipment to make your batch is on site, with typical beer ranging from $140 to $240/batch.  My friends and I brewed three batches of beer total (and at 15 gallons a batch, you can imagine how much drinking we have to do!), which took about two hours.  After a couple weeks of fermenting, we came back to bottle and label our beers, which also took about two hours.  Having brewed a few times in undergrad, I can definitely say that both the process and the final product was way way better than anything I'd ever experienced brewing at home.

Here's one of our beers, a delicious Belgian Blonde we called the Monk's Moustache.

And here's another, a Russian Imperial Stout we named Ivan the Terrible.

I had a great time and would strongly recommend it to anyone.  Now I have the enviable task of drinking all this beer!!  Cheers.

Brain Aneurysm Foundation Afternoon Tea - 4/25

4/21/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
Coming up this weekend is an Afternoon Tea charity event hosted by the Brain Aneurysm Foundation.  This should be right up media Rep DanDan's alley.  He's an MD/PhD student that does some sort of fancy brain research.

The Brain Aneurysm Foundation will host an Afternoon Tea on Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the Omni Parker House in downtown Boston. The fundraising event will celebrate the lives of brain aneurysm survivors while honoring the memory of those lost to brain aneurysms by supporting the mission of The Brain Aneurysm Foundation of increasing education, awareness and research that helps save lives by reducing the number of ruptured brain aneurysms.

The Afternoon Tea will also feature a silent art auction, with pieces donated by a host of local artists who support the mission of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. Among the artists donating pieces for the auction are Sara Demrow-Dent, an award-winning contemporary painter who works in acrylics, Dale Partiss Green, an award-winning landscape artist working in oils, Heather Proll Karp, a national-selling oil painter who is also a brain aneurysm survivor, Beverly Mitchell, an award-winning watercolor artist and many others.

Eversave Launches in Boston

4/20/2010 12:24:00 AM 1 Response
I just recently jumped on the group purchasing bandwagon.  I've been stressing a bit over work and such and got an email from one of the sites with a 60% off deal for a massage.  I had to do it.  I haven't gotten the massage yet, but I will.  Rest assured, I will.

Newly launched Eversave.com is local (based in Wakefield) and in addition to saving us our hard earned cash, they also donate some of their proceeds to local charities.

Your readers might want to know about an new group buying service launching in the Boston area called Eversave Boston.

Like other group buying sites, The Save offers amazing bargains for Boston-area consumers on local restaurants, spas, hotels, classes & more at discounts from 50%-90% off. Once a minimum number of buyers have purchased the Save, it’s on.

Looks like each of the deals is charity specific, and even better they look like they're mostly local ones.  Here's a few of the charities that are going to be receiving donations from Eversave deals: Lynnfield Education Trust, Foundation for the Advancement of Malden Education, Foundation for Belmont Education.

Good stuff.  I like that we're saving money and local charities are benefiting as well.  Definitely a win-win situation.

Casting Call: Wicked Summer

4/15/2010 02:04:00 AM 0 Responses
I'd prefer if we as a state didn't get sucked into the swirling black hole of despair that I find Jersey Shore to be, but it looks like it's inevitable.  They're casting for a new, similar show set in MA.

A Jersey Shore spinoff is in the works called Wicked Summer, which will take place in the sultry climes of Beantown rather than on the sandy beaches ringing the land of GTL, E! News learned Monday.  "Jersey Shore is its own groundbreaking series," says Doron Ofir, the casting director for both shows. "Wicked Summer is being developed more as a docusoap."

But just because the setting is heading north, don't think the subject matter is going highbrow.  "We're giving Massachusetts the chance to show the world why Bay Staters have got the hottest girls and proudly buff guys who believe in God, family, politics, sports, beer and partying!" Ofir says.

The open casting site for Wicked Summer says that producers are looking for "blue collar, hard working, harder partying, tough talking, damn good looking Mass natives from all over the state."

Bye Bye Foundation Lounge

4/15/2010 01:51:00 AM 0 Responses
I meant to post about this earlier, but I kept on forgetting.  I don't venture into Kenmore very often except to go to Popeye's.  But for those of you that would like to say goodbye to Foundation Lounge, you've got 2 days.

The Foundation Lounge will close on April 17. Though the sushi and sake spot has been very popular with the white hat set, the relationship with landlord Boston University has been nothing short of tumultuous, says owner George Lewis. This leaves the BU-owned Hotel Commonwealth with just one restaurant, Eastern Standard down from an original three (Michael Schlow-owned seafood spot Great Bay shuttered in 2009). The news isn't all bad for Foundation fans, however: Lewis says that "the Foundation may rise again," though he does not have a location lined up.

I'm trying to remember the last time I went to the Foundation Lounge.  Honestly, I think it was a couple years ago at the Thrillist launch party.  That was a fun night.  Tried miracle fruit for the first and only time.  Also met a bunch of great people.

Presale: John Mayer @ Comcast Center - 8/6

I know there are John Mayer fans out there.  I'm not one of them, but I know there are lots of you.  So for those of you interested in his concert coming up on August 6th at the Comcast Center, the Presale starts today at 10am EDT.

John Mayer
Comcast Center
Mansfield, MA
Fri, Aug 6, 2010 07:00 PM

I haven't been able to get my hands on the LiveNation presale password yet.  So as of right now, this is just a heads up that the Citibank presale will be starting.

From my experience with these Citibank presales, you don't have to pay with a Citibank card.  You just need the first 6 numbers of the card to act as the presale password.  So for all of you without one, you can use mine.  The numbers are 546616.

If I'm able to get the Live Nation presale password sometime tomorrow, I'll post it to my twitter.  There's a link to my Twitter at the top of the Bloggery webpage for those of you that would like to join.

GOTO Boston Spring Gala - 4/17

4/13/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
I live alone and I work alone (in my home office).  As a result, sometimes I go days without seeing another human being.  My friend Rebecca once asked me "How many times a day do you get out of the apartment?"  And my response was "somewhere between 0 and 1, usually closer to 0."  Why am I telling you this?  Because I've recently tried to get out more by looking at various charity organizations to volunteer at.  Which brings me to the GOTO Boston Spring Gala this week.

I am a member of GOTO Boston, a volunteer organization which stands for giving opportunities to others.  We are a non-profit organization of young professionals in the Boston area who get together and raise money to send underprivileged urban youth to a summer camp up in Maine for 3 consecutive summers.  We have an upcoming gala on Saturday, April 17th in the Fort Point area of Boston.

It is open bar, lots of fun and dancing all night and a good way for young professionals in Boston to connect... and of course, we are raising money for a great cause!

I've been on edge for the last month, because I sent my materials off to my accountant in early March and never heard back despite numerous emails/phone calls.  Finally, I heard back this past Friday that my taxes are now done.  Thank goodness.

I know that we have until May 11th due to the disaster relief thingy from the flooding.  But as 4/15 approaches I just get nervous if my taxes aren't done.  Now for the good news.  This April 15th, you can spend your day eating cupcakes at the Boston Cupcake Camp.

CupcakeCamp is a free gathering of people who love cupcakes. Come sample the creations made by Boston area bakers, both amateur and professional. Attendees are encouraged, but not required, to bring cupcakes. PAs will have a special lineup of cocktails created specially for the event.

They've got more information at their blog (here).

But I find they're facebook page to be much easier to read (here).

Backstreet Boys Tix On Sale Today!

4/09/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
I didn't know these guys were still touring.  At this point aren't they more like Backstreet Men?  I remember listening to them in junior high or maybe it was high school.  Either way it's been a while.

The funny thing, though, is that EVERY time I go karaoke, someone ends up singing 'I Want it That Way.'  It doesn't matter if it's karaoke here, or when I'm in Taiwan on business.  It always happens.

Well, tickets for their upcoming June concert go on sale today at 10am EDT.

Brokemyiphone.com Saved My Life ... and iPhone

4/09/2010 12:02:00 AM 4 Responses
Ok, so you guys know that I usually only talk about Boston based businesses, but I'm going to make an exception and plug Wayne over at brokemyiphone.com because he helped me out of a big mess.

Last week, I was sitting out on the balcony reading some magazines and the one at the top of the pile started flapping in the wind.  Being the idiot that I am, I decided to use the only thing I had with me to weigh it down, my iphone.  It worked ok for a while, then suddenly a gust of wind picked up that top magazine along with my iphone and sent it careening down 4 stories.

I RAN down the stairs and saw it on the pavement.  It was face down.  I crossed my fingers and hoped that the rubber case I keep it in magically saved it from any serious damage.  This was not the case.  I was mortified because my life is in that phone.  See below for the horror that was my broken iphone.

Being the techie nerd that I am, I immediately went on Facebook and Twitter to mourn the loss of my iphone.  That's when Wayne found me via the interwebs and told me that he could fix it.

Long story short, I mailed my phone to CA last Friday and got it back in the mail this Wednesday.  That's less than a week turnaround.  I was super impressed.  Here's my phone:  back and looking like new.

I emailed Wayne to say thanks and to let him know that I was going to make sure that all you folks out there are aware of this resource and he filled me in on a few more things about their business.

We've been in business since 2007
We now repair 20-30 phones per week
We repair almost anything with an LCD
We are the only repair shop in the US at the time that has nexus one's AMOLED LCD in stock
We have already replaced a broken screen on the iPad
We specialize in water damage repair

PS.  If you're wondering why I didn't take it to the Apple store, it's because I now hate the genius bar after I took my $1300 macbook in to get repaired last year and they told me it would cost $1400.  I ended up buying the part I needed for $100 off the internet and replaced it myself.

Rihanna & Ke$ha 8/8 Presale Going On NOW!

4/07/2010 12:38:00 PM 0 Responses
I usually try not to blog during the day because of the whole day job thing.  But I figured this is something that you guys might want to know about asap.  The Citibank presale for the Rihanna concert on 8/8 at the Comcast Center just started about 30 minutes ago.  Ke$ha is going to be opening for her, and I think I read somewhere that Nicki Minaj is going to be there too.

Rihanna: Last Girl On Earth Tour with special guest Ke$ha
Comcast Center
Mansfield, MA
Sun, Aug 8, 2010 07:30 PM

If you don't have a friend with a Citibank card, get one.  I'll be your friend.  =)

Otherwise, tickets go on sale to the public on Saturday at 10am EDT.

PS.  I saw Rihanna when she opened for Jay-Z.  She was awesome.  And as for Ke$ha, she's not my favorite but that 'brush my teeth with a bottle of jack' song is pretty catchy.

1000 Words: Royale

4/07/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
Bloggery media rep VLiu went to Royale this past Friday to check out the new weekly event hosted by 6one7 (here) and she had quite the good time.  Here's what she had to say:

Club Royale has definitely raised the bar for clubbing in Boston. Its luxurious but subtle decorations live up to the club's name. The sweeping double staircases leading up to the dance floor and bars add a fairy-tale touch to Royale; the plush, comfortable benches and high stools scattered throughout the club are extremely thoughtful for clubbers who do not have a table. For people who get bored easily like me, the two-stories and magnificent space will keep you more than entertained. Most important of all, Royale plays the best music I have yet to hear in Boston clubs, hip-hop and pop splashed with tints of trance, techno, etc.. Surprisingly, the drinks are not "royally" priced, instead relatively the same as Gypsy, Estate, Roxy Red, etc. All in all, this new club definitely measures up to the hypes it received.

Warning to those who want to give Royale a try: get there before 10:30!

I'm usually not this generous with my praise, but I wasn't there, so perhaps Royale + 6one7 really is this magical. I kind of want to find out for myself now/

MIT = Most Stressful MA College

4/06/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
Surprised?  I'm not.  My stress levels were definitely way up there when I was a student at MIT.  A new article by The Daily Beast ranks the top 50 schools in the US News and World Report and ranks them based on which are the most "stressful."

While it is impossible to quantify the stress an individual feels, there’s a lot of data on stressful environments. To determine the most stressful American colleges, we put our lens to the top 50 universities in the U.S. News and World Report rankings, using methodology informed by Anderson.

The results?

MIT = 3rd
Harvard = 5th
Tufts = 21st
BC = 25th
Brandeis = 31st

Ranks were given based on:  cost, competitiveness, acceptance rate, engineering, and crime on campus.

Interesting to see, but ultimately probably not really much of a measure of anything.  I've been to Stanford (ranked #1 most stressful).  How could you possibly say with a straight face that those students are more stressed out than MIT students?

Half Priced Burger at Radius on Saturdays

4/05/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
Yummmmmm burgers. One of my favorite foods. And now you can get the Radius burger for half price (i think that makes it about $10ish) on Saturdays.

The burger at Radius has earned itself quite a following since its debut - and now its fan club is about to get even bigger. During the month of April, the award-winning sandwich (no seriously - it took top honors at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival back in 2008 and has been singled out for its deliciousness by Boston Magazine and Epicurious.com) will be offered at half its original price for Saturday night diners in the bar (not in the dining room or for take-out - just in the bar)

My friend eliu ended up checking it out this past weekend and said it was a pretty good burger.

Looks pretty darn good to me.  Gonna hafta mark that on my calendar.

6one7 Productions Hosts FLASH @ Royale on Fridays

4/02/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
I've gotten to the age where I've come to terms with the fact that I can't dance to save my life.  And rather than subject other people in public to the horrors of my dancing, I've pretty much stopped going clubbing.  I still go occasionally though, and this email just came across my inbox this week.

6one7 Productions are proud to present their newest Friday venture, FLASH at Royale, the site of the infamous former Roxy nightclub. 6one7 Productions will bring together a cross section of the city’s key players, from fashionistas to young professionals to industry innovators and everything in between. Grand opening revelers will enjoy a special performance by singer/songwriter Wynter Gordon (who has recently worked with smash artists including Flo Rida, Danity Kane, Jennifer Lopez and David Guetta) followed by the hottest beats from East Coast to West Coast by DJ Matty D in its newly renovated lavish opera setting. A special performance by Boston dance troupe Phunk Phenomenon will also light up the stage.

One of the Bloggery media reps will be there tonight.  We're currently holding a dance off to see who gets to go.  It really isn't fair for the one of us who has to dance while wearing a keg around his neck, though (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia reference).

The Great Burlesque Exposition - Starts Today!

4/02/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
I almost went to a burlesque show that was going on at The Beehive last year, but couldn't find anyone to go with me so I ended up not making it.  And it wasn't that my friends aren't the type to go ... quite the contrary.  It's actually that they'd already gone a week or two prior so they didn't feel like going again.

For those of you that are fans of the genre, the Great Burlesque Exposition starts today and runs through the weekend.

There's multiple facets to the show from what I gather on the site.  There's a conference portion intended for professional performers and/or folks that are looking into getting into the profession.  Then there is what sounds like a showroom with exhibits and related vendors.  And then finally there will be a few shows going on (that's where I would be).
