Like the name states, the new candy store on Boylston is indeed a Sugar Heaven. Media rep Dwillens swung by the grand opening and snapped a few pics to post here. And I think I may have diabetes now just from looking at them too long.

Looks like their website is down right now, but check them out, their address is:  669 Boylston Street.

3/30/2010 12:18:00 AM 0 Responses
Looks like today is a food-themed day.  It could be because I was starving all afternoon.  I was swamped with work and didn't have time to eat lunch, so all I had during the day was a bowl of cereal.  But it's ok, I made up for it at dinner.  But, I digress.  Also coming up in a little over a week is the 15th Annual Taste of Back Bay - on 4/8.

Ferran Adria Coming to Boston!

3/29/2010 12:32:00 AM 0 Responses
Ok, so I have mixed feelings about this.  I was ok with Ferran Adria closing El Bulli for a couple of years to 'reconcept' the restaurant.  Cause God knows I'm going to need at least that much time to save up enough money to actually fly to Spain and eat there ... that is if I can ever get a reservation.  But he's now going to teach at Harvard?  Come one, stick with cooking.  Or at least teach at Le Cordon Bleu.

Spanish celebrity chef Ferran Adria, who has concocted treats such as ravioli made from squid and freeze-dried foie gras, is teaming up with Harvard University to offer an undergraduate course in culinary physics at the Ivy League school.

Adria will begin teaching in the fall at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the university said Wednesday. His general education science course will use cooking to introduce students to soft matter physics, which involves the study of suspensions and gels.

Welcome to Boston, Ferran.  But, let's not lose focus on El Bulli, por favor.

Anime Boston - 4/2 to 4/4

3/26/2010 01:18:00 AM 2 Responses
I just recently started watching anime again.  I watched a little bit as a kid and then nothing and then now I'm hooked on Naruto and Full Metal Alchemist.  Coming up next week is Anime Boston.

Anime Boston is an annual three-day Japanese animation convention held in Boston, Massachusetts. Anime Boston 2010 will be held Friday, April 2nd through Sunday, April 4th at the Hynes Convention Center and Sheraton Boston Hotel.

Anime Boston 2010 will once again be presenting popular events which include a masquerade, an anime music video contest, video programming rooms, an artists' alley and art show, karaoke, game shows, video games, manga library, dances and balls, and much more... We'll also be hosting some special guests and industry representatives at Anime Boston.

I recently watched Death Note.  That one was pretty good as well.  Any other suggestions?

$6 Cocktails at Haru

3/17/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
I've only been to Haru once.  I swung by the weekend that it opened a couple of years back and haven't really been back since.  Nowadays, whenever I grab sushi, it's usually at Fish Market out in Brookline.  But, I'm always looking for a new happy hour location and $6 cocktails might be worth checking out.

Haru is kicking it into high gear for spring by offering a specialty cocktail each month for only $6. In March, guests are invited to indulge in the Berry Kiss, a blend of Absolut Citron, Veev Acai liqueur, POM juice and fresh strawberry puree with a sugared rim. In April, Haru will feature the Cherry Blossom, a mix of Svedka Cherry, Nigori Sake, peach puree and cranberry juice (garnished with a cherry and small flower).

Lady Gaga Boston Presale Going on NOW!

3/17/2010 12:03:00 AM 1 Response
I love concerts.  Ask any of my friends.  I go to a lot of them.  One performer I have yet to see is Lady Gaga, so you can bet your .... bottom dollar ... that I'm going this time around during the 2nd leg of her North American Tour.  Citibank pre-sale tickets went on sale yesterday.  As luck should have it, I have a Citibank card.  BOOYAH!

Virgin Mobile Presents the Monster Ball Tour Starring Lady Gaga
TD Garden
Boston, MA
Thu, Jul 1, 2010 08:00 PM

It makes sense to me now why she uses a Virgin Mobile phone in her new Telephone music video.  Still not sure why Plenty of Fish and what appears to be Miracle Whip shows up in the video as well.

Hurry up and befriend someone that has a citibank card, presale ends tomorrow.

Gisele Says She's a Bostonian Now

3/16/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
Gisele is on the cover of the latest Vogue magazine and she looks pretty awesome for having just had a kid.  I don't normally read Vogue, so I just skimmed the article, but came to a grinding halt when she said that she now considers herself a Bostonian.  All I can say is, Welcome!

Benjamin was born at home, in warm water in a deep bathtub that overlooks the Charles River. "I wanted to experience the transformation," says Gisele. A midwife friend of hers came in from Brazil as did her mother; her husband was there too. Gisele meditated through the birth.

The baby is called Benjamin Rein: "I wanted him to be called River because I wanted something always flowing, immortal. My husband said, 'There's no way we're going to call him River.' But my father's name is Reinoldo, so it's a homage to him. And it's like water."

She's regained her figure, apparently instantly and with no more exercise than some yoga on a mat in the living room. "I think it's muscle memory," she says. Gisele has always been in shape ... I think a lot of people get pregnant and decide they can turn into garbage disposals. I was mindful about what I ate, and I gained only 30 pounds."

29, the last and richest of the supermodels has given in to her preference for the inner life. Gisele has sold her New York town house. "I'm really a Bostonian now," she says, with all the sober, studious implications of that move.

Leave it to Gisele to give women everywhere more reasons to hate her.  She gained "only" 30 lbs and then lost it after 6 weeks of having her baby.  Impressive.  Very impressive.

FDR's Dorm Room at Harvard

3/15/2010 02:26:00 AM 1 Response
Interesting little tidbit in the news this weekend about a project that's currently going on to restore FDR's dorm room at Harvard.  All I can say is FDR's undergraduate dorm room was apparently nicer than my current apartment now.

Michael Weishan, a landscape designer in suburban Boston who is widely known as the host of “The Victory Garden” on PBS, is using the well-documented nonacademic habits of Roosevelt and Brown as a basis for furnishing their dorm room. Mr. Weishan has founded the nonprofit FDR Suite Foundation to restore the two-bedroom unit in the Adams House dorm as a minimuseum and guest quarters.

The suite, officially B-17, is in an 1890s Tudor building originally called Westmorly Court, designed by Warren & Wetmore, the architects of Grand Central Terminal. Roosevelt and Brown paid $400 in annual rent, while Harvard’s tuition cost just $150. The cushy building offered daily maid service and an indoor swimming pool with fireplaces and padded wicker armchairs along the tiled deck. William K. Vanderbilt, who lived down the hall from Roosevelt, decorated his rooms with stuffed animal heads and photos of yachts.

All I can say is WOW.

Terroir Coffee @ GoCoffeeGo

3/11/2010 12:33:00 AM 0 Responses
I don't drink a lot of coffee.  Actually, I don't drink much caffeine at all.  Instead, I try to get enough sleep so that I don't need it.  It doesn't always work though.  The last package of coffee that I bought was some stuff from Burundi that my friend gave me.  It was really good stuff.  I just got an email about a local artisanal coffee company called Terroir whose products are now available online.

Terroir Select Coffee was created in early 2004 to forge a new kind of partnership with coffee growers – one which recognizes their fundamental role and identity in the production of high quality coffees. Terroir believes that one should not blend truly fine coffees, just like one does not blend fine wines, because they are already complete statements.

Terroir, based out of Acton, MA is tiny and their goal is to find to the best of their ability, benchmark quality coffees from single identified sources. Such coffees are often produced in tiny quantities and when transport is not available they fly the coffee to Terroir’s location.

Definitely something worth checking out.  And Terroir's coffee is now being carried by GoCoffeeGo.com as of earlier this week.

Lord Hobo = Heaven

3/10/2010 12:31:00 AM 1 Response
Ok so two stories before I get to the actual informative part of this blog entry.  First, do you remember the part in Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler golf movie) where he's told to go to his happy place, and his happy place has beer, a midget on a tricycle, and a hot blonde woman in lingerie?  Well, Lord Hobo is MY new happy place.

Second, I was actually asked by my friends to not write this post because Lord Hobo is so awesome, that they don't want you guys to find out about it.  Selfish, right?  But understandable.  That's why this post is actually two weeks late in the making.

I went to Lord Hobo in Cambridge a couple weekends ago to hang out with friends.  There are no midgets and no blondes in lingerie, but good god the beer menu is AMAZING!  Yes, it's all-caps-worthy amazing.  I don't think I've ever had beer aged in bourbon barrels before.  Lord Hobo had two to choose from.  And yes, I drank both of them ... multiple times.  Oh and it's not just the beer, they had a braised oxtail with gnocci on the menu the night that I was there that was so incredible, I almost ate the plate.

You need to go.  But not when my friends are there, they'll be furious at me for making it crowded.

A St. Patrick’s Day Celtic Sojourn - 3/20

3/10/2010 12:21:00 AM 0 Responses
It's that time of year again.  Time to get excited about green beer, partying for three days straight (I was told long ago that in Boston, St. Patrick's Day is a three day holiday), and more green beer.  And one yearly tradition that always comes up is the St Patrick's Day Celtic Sojourn with Brian O’Donovan.  This year it's on March 20th.

For the past four St. Patrick’s Day Concerts, WGBH’s Celtic Sojourn has introduced a wide range of both familiar and new musicians to delighted audiences eager to celebrate the holiday in true Irish style. This concert follows the format established for the burgeoning Christmas Celtic Sojourn series of concerts which over the past two years alone has played to over 19,000 people in Boston, Providence and Worcester.

A St. Patrick's Day Celtic Sojourn features familiar performances by some of the principal Celtic musicians who invite you to experience the Irish holiday in a way like never before. This year's show features the return of an iconic fiddler from Ireland, Frankie Gavin, with his band De Dannan. The show also features extraordinary guitarist Tony McManus along with an exciting young singer and harpist, Maeve Gilchrist.

I've been watching a lot of late night tv lately - been combating a nasty bout of insomnia - and I keep seeing those commercials for the Celtic Women audio cd's.  I've seen them so many times, I kinda want to buy the cd's now.  But I digress ...

Full Body Scanner Now at Logan

3/09/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
So according to the Globe, the first full body scanner to be used at airports in the US came to our fair city and is, as of yesterday, in use at Logan.  I don't have any flights planned for at least a month (thank goodness) and don't really have the desire to take the blue line all the way out there and back just to see it so I'm going to have to take their word for it for now.

The first of 450 controversial full-body scanners to be deployed at airports around the country this year will be put into use at Logan International Airport on Monday.  About 120 passengers went through one of the machines at Logan’s Terminal A as part of a test yesterday.

Logan has received three machines, which scan passengers’ bodies for weapons and explosives beneath their clothing using low-level X-ray beams, and the airport is expected to have more than a dozen in place at three terminals by the end of the summer.

Ok I take that back, looks like I'll have to wait until the end of the summer to see the scanner. I never fly out of terminal A.

What is Boston Reading?

3/08/2010 12:02:00 AM 2 Responses
Read any good books lately?  I recently read Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake and liked it so much I just started reading The Handmaiden's Tale.  It's a little ironic because I hated The Blind Assassin.

I'm also reading two books on waste water treatment plants - don't ask, it's for work - anyone out there want to school me on the finer points of MBR systems?  But I digress.  I recently got an email about what we as a city are reading.  Here's the list

Non-fiction

1. True Compass: A Memoir, Edward M. Kennedy
2. Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell
3. Going Rogue: An American Life, Sarah Palin
4. Have a Little Faith: A True Story, Mitch Albom
5. When the Game Was Ours, Larry Bird, Earvin Johnson Jr., and Jackie MacMullan
6. The Last Lecture, Randy Pausch
7. The Yankee Years, Joe Torre
8. Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve Harvey
9. Guinness World Records 2010, Guinness World Records
10. What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures, Malcolm Gladwell

Fiction

1. The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown
2. The Help, Kathryn Stockett
3. I, Alex Cross, James Patterson
4. Under the Dome, Stephen King
5. The Associate, John Grisham
6. Handle With Care, Jodi Picoult
7. The Last Song, Nicholas Sparks
8. The Girl Who Played with Fire, Stieg Larsson
9. That Old Cape Magic, Richard Russo
10. The Host, Stephenie Meyer

Stephenie Meyer is that Twilight lady, right?  That's one book I won't be reading.  There was one night that I was suffering from a bit of insomnia so I turned on the TV and ended up watching Twilight at like 4am on HBO.  Let me get one thing straight, instead of catching on fire in sunlight, her vampires sparkle?  No thanks.
