Athletic Republic Norwood Grand Opening - 2/27

2/26/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
This is one serious sounding gym.  One that I personally would not fit in at, since I don't play any sports.  I'm pretty sure I wouldn't know how to use the hockey treadmill, nor would I have any use for the 50 yards of turf that they have.

Those of you who are and were athletes though, might like working out here more than a conventional gym.

New England Patriot legend Andre Tippett will help Athletic Republic Norwood celebrate the Grand Opening of the new sports performance training center on Saturday, February 27 from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m.  The new facility, located at 290 Vanderbilt Avenue in Norwood, offers a unique results-based training program for athletes of all sports, ages and abilities.

Andre Tippett, a member of the New England Patriots Hall of Fame, will be on hand at 1:00 p.m. as part of  the grand opening celebration.  Tippett played 12 seasons for the New England Patriots and appeared in five Pro Bowls.  Also attending the event later that afternoon will be D.A., weeknight host on 98.5 The Sports Hub.

The grand opening will offer local athletes an opportunity to speak with Athletic Republic trainers and participate in equipment demonstrations.  A host of prizes will be given out throughout the day, including prize packages to Modell’s, tickets to 2010 Red Sox Games, upcoming Bruins games and the Hockey East Championship games at the TD Bank Garden.  Athletic Republic Norwood will offer a 20% discount off any program when you sign up on February 27.

$3 Slider Deal at Pairings

2/24/2010 12:03:00 AM 1 Response

This makes the second day in a row that I'm blogging about burgers.  Somebody stop me!  Or better yet, send me something burger related to blog about tomorrow.  According to their twitter, Pairings just started up a $3 Slider deal that gets you 3 sliders and fries.  Here's what their tweet said:

We're so excited about our $3 slider menu starting 2/22! 3 sliders and fries for $3. Available at the bar mon-sat 5-7pm and 10pm-12am.

You know, I haven't been to Pairings yet for a happy hour.  Usually when I'm in the Park Plaza area, I go to McCormick and Schmicks (they've got a kickass happy hour menu).  Looks like it's time to check it out.

1000 Words: Miss Boston 2010

2/24/2010 12:02:00 AM 2 Responses
Anyone have a chance to make it to the Miss Boston 2010 Pageant a few days ago (here)?  I wasn't, but my friend Adam was kind enough to pass along a few photos.  Photo credits go to Peter Rufo.

Congrats to Ashley Rizzo!

The judges of the Miss Boston Pageant have crowned Ashley Rizzo as Miss Boston 2010.  The Miss Boston Pageant took place this afternoon before a full ball room at the Omni Parker House in Boston, MA.  Ashley was among 17 young women from Massachusetts competing for the title of Miss Boston 2010, an official Miss America preliminary pageant.

The Boston Pops Turns 125

2/23/2010 12:05:00 AM 0 Responses
I love the Boston Pops.  Almost as much as I love the BSO.  I played the cello for a number of years, so anything involving an orchestra is near and dear to me.  This year, the Boston Pops is celebrating its 125th Anniversary and Keith Lockhart made a video announcement of what we can look forward to:

I usually try to make it to at least one Pops concert each year.  Here's hoping I can keep that going this year.

They were here two years ago casting, and it looks like they're back again (here).  There's also a good chance they were here last year too, but I just missed it.  NBC is coming back to Boston to cast for a new season of The Biggest Loser on March 7th.

NBC’s popular reality series “The Biggest Loser” is launching a 15-city cross-country search to find new contestants for the next edition of the hit show. Individuals and teams of two who have at least 100 lbs. to lose are encouraged to apply for the new season, which will air in the fall of 2010.

Casting producers are looking for outgoing and charismatic individuals and teams of two who have the personality, desire and competitive edge to vie for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lose weight, change their lives forever and compete for a grand prize of $250,000. Candidates must be at least 18 years of age and legal residents of the United States.

While they will try to see everyone, “The Biggest Loser” casting teams will do their best to see the first 500 people in line.  People will not be allowed to line up prior to three hours before the start of the open call. Candidates should bring a non-returnable photo of themselves (and their partners if applying as a team).

1000 Words: 5 Guys

2/23/2010 12:02:00 AM 1 Response
If you were to tell me that I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, there's about three things that come to mind that I would choose from.  The first is yellowtail sushi.  The next is cream cheese danishes.  And the last would be burgers.  I recently had the pleasure of trying a 5 Guys burger, which from my understanding has an East Coast following the same way In n Out has a West Coast one.  It was a pretty darned good burger.

And no, I'm not posting these pics just to taunt you ... according to the Five Guys website, there's one located in the Dedham Mall (here).  Time to hop in the car.  Don't own a car?  I've posted half a zillion times about Zipcar.  Get one of those.  Note, I haven't been to the Dedham one, I went while I was out of state.

80's Night in Boston??

2/18/2010 03:16:00 AM 12 Responses
Bloggery Reader Michelle had a request that I could not answer.  I'm hoping that collectively, we can help her out.

I was just wondering if you know of any good 80's nights or parties or anything around the city.  I went to one around here that WFNX put on, but when I've lived elsewhere, there were places/bars that did great 80s nights on a weekly basis.  Any ideas?

Can anyone help out?  Come to think of it, I am sometimes overwhelmed with the desire to rock some Girbauds with a Hypercolor t-shirt and listen to some Depeche Mode, or The Cure, or Pet Shop Boys..... or ... hmmmm...

MA Film Making Tax Credit

2/17/2010 12:03:00 AM 1 Response
Hopefully I'm not too late for this.  I'm still in Taiwan, so I haven't had as much time as I'd like to sift through emails and blog.  Apparently, there is a proposal to cap the film credits in MA.  If this happens, we can almost definitely say goodbye to all the local movie filming that we've come to love over the last couple of years.

See below for details that I received via email:

A message from the Massachusetts Production Coalition:

Last week, Governor Patrick proposed a cap on the Film and TV tax credit of $50 million per year for the next two years.

Yet, the Massachusetts Film and TV Tax Credit has created more than $1 billion in new economic activity in the Commonwealth since it was created four years ago.  As most of you know first-hand, it
has been a tremendous boon to the Commonwealth, acting as an incentive to local investment by production companies that have come here in large numbers.

The proposed $50 million cap represents a 25% credit on $200 million of eligible production expenditures for each year of the two years. The state has averaged between $75 and $100 million in credits per year for the last two years, so the cap represents a potential 50% decrease in production in our state.

The Governor¹s suggested temporary film credit cap has gone to the legislature, where the House and Senate will determine its fate. While we sympathize with the need to close the budget gap and want to do our part, the Massachusetts Production Coalition believes that capping this credit is not the best solution and will lead to lost jobs and lost economic growth. This, at a time when we need increased jobs and economic activity to work our way out of the current fiscal environment and encourage new investments in the commonwealth.

CALL TO ACTION

The Massachusetts Production Coalition is working to eliminate the proposed cap to protect production in our state and jobs for our members. We are coordinating our efforts with other stakeholders both inside and outside the state.  But we need your voice.

Who To Call

Targeted phone calls delivering a unified message are needed. PLEASE MAKE PHONE CALLS TO THE FOLLOWING LEGISLATORS FIRST. If you want to send an email or fax a letter as well, the necessary contact information is provided.

1. Call your Massachusetts state Representative and your Massachusetts state Senator. If you do not know your State Representative and/or Senator please go to: http://www.mass.gov/legis/city_town.htm

2. Call the following key legislators:
Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo: 617-722-2500.
Fax: 617-722-1008.   Robert.DeLeo@state.ma.us
Senate President Therese Murray: 617-722-1500.
Fax: 617-248-3840.   Therese.Murray@state.ma.us
Rep. Charles Murphy, Chair, House ways & Means Committee:
617-722-2990.
Fax: 617-722-2998.   Rep.CharlesMurphy@hwm.state.ma.us
Senator Steven Panagiotakos, Chair, Senate Ways & Means Committee:
617-722-1630.
Fax: 617-722-1001.   Steven.Panagiotakos@state.ma.us

The Message
Use the bullet points below. When you call, first ask to speak to the Representative/Senator, and if unavailable, leave a message with a member of his/her staff.
·         My name is
·         My address is (street address & town)
NOTE: When calling your own Representative/Senator, BE SURE TO SAY that you are a constituent of the Senator/Representative.
·         I work in the film and television industry, my job is one of thousands of jobs created by the film tax credit.
·         I am opposed to the proposed cap on the film tax credit
in the Supplemental Budget because it will export my job to
another state.
·         The film tax credit has brought more than $1 billion in
new economic growth to Massachusetts, as well as scores of new
businesses and thousands of new jobs for people like me, and I
need that work.
·         Studios will still make movies and spend hundreds of
millions of dollars anyway- just not here.
·         The credit is a solution to the state's current economic
stagnation and job loss, not a problem.
·         I ask that Representative/Senator (name) preserve job
creation and growth in the Commonwealth by voting AGAINST the cap
on the film tax credit.

You may also ask your family and friends to call. If they do not work in the industry, they can use the appropriate bullet points above and explain the benefits they have seen first-hand.

Every phone call counts.  Thank you!

Miss Boston Pageant - 2/21

2/16/2010 12:05:00 AM 0 Responses
Coming up next week is the 2010 Miss Boston Pageant. I took a look at the website and they look like quite the group of fetching young ladies.

Miss Boston Scholarship Organization officials announced that the Miss Boston Pageant will be held on February 21, 2010 at 2pm, at the Omni Parker House in Boston, MA. The pageant will feature 16 of Boston’s most dynamic young women as they compete for scholarships and prizes.

Contestants will compete in phases of competition, including talent, interview, physical fitness, and evening gown. During the competition, each contestant will also discuss her chosen platform, a social or community issue of concern to herself and our society at large.

The winner of Miss Boston will be awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes to fund her college or graduate school education. During her year of service, Miss Boston will travel across Greater Boston, speaking to government officials, business leaders, and community groups about her platform issue. She will also be eligible to compete for the title of Miss Massachusetts in Worcester, MA in the summer of 2010.

Good luck to all the contestants.  If you are interested in attending the event, you can purchase tickets.

Boston Lamb Takedown - 2/28

2/15/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
Interesting little contest coming up in about two weeks.  It's a lamb cookoff.  I can't cook it very well, but I sure know how to eat it.

Cooks! You are holding aces!!! Allow me to explain your awesome situation: the first 20 amateurs to sign up will each be given 15 lbs of lamb to cook with!!! Choose between shoulder, shank, leg, or ground! Now, think- what the crap are you going to do with all that beautiful meat? For inspiration, consider previous takedowns, and check out some media photo essays, or go out on your own limb. No recipe is too yummy! Sign up now, sign up fast… spots will fill up!

Lamb fans! For a mere $15, come on down to the Middle East, February 28 at 4PM and stuff yourself on each and every recipe. If you think you might love lamb, you’ll know after this day is through- lamb is hands down the noblest meat in all the land- and the cutest! Expect tons of lamb swag - just for showing up!!! As an honored guest of the Takedown, you’ve only one responsibility: to vote on the dopest lamb dish!!! Heavy lies the crown on the head of the Boston Lamb Takedown King.

So just doing the math, 15 lbs of lamb x 20 cooks = 300 lbs of lamb.  Yum!

Russell Peters Tickets on Sale Friday! - 2/12

2/10/2010 12:02:00 AM 2 Responses
It's strange, I was just looking at the Ticketmaster site yesterday and I swear Russell Peters tickets were supposed to go on sale today.  But, I pulled up the site today to tell you guys about it and now it says tickets aren't going on sale until Friday.

If you haven't seen Russell Peters perform, he's pretty hilarious.  Does a lot of ethnic jokes, and has a better fobby Chinese accent than I do.  I've seen him twice in the past when he came through Boston and this time around makes lucky number 3.  Here's one of my favorite bits from his original act.

$5 Sandwiches at Nick Varano’s Famous Deli

2/09/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
Sandwiches for half off? Yes please. I haven't been to Nick Varano's Famous Deli yet, usually when I want a sandwich from the North End, I head to Dino's. MMMMmmMMM .... Dino's.... Sorry, had to wipe the drool off my face. For 50% off though, I will give Nick's a shot.

Nick Varano, owner of North End hot spots Strega, Nico and Famous Deli, is extending some Italian charm to everyone by offering up $5 sandwich specials. Present a limited-time flyer to Nick Varano’s Famous Deli and get your choice of one of four mouth-watering sandwiches for only $5, (generally sold for $9.95).

Sandwich options include: Italian; Famous Chicken Cutlet (“Dom Deluise’s Favorite” – fresh breaded chicken cutlet, roasted red peppers, sharp provolone on a baguette); Chicken Parm; or, Nick’s Famous Meatball (“Just Don’t Tell Your Mother!” – Mamma Varano meatballs with fresh mozzarella and grated parmigiano on a baguette)

I'll have one of each ... except for the Italian (I don't eat pork).  Looks like it's time to walk over to the North End for lunch these next few days.  Remember you need to print out a copy of the flyer and bring it with you

AllMealDeals.com For All Your Dining Needs

2/09/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
I got an email recently about a new startup that launched in Boston called AllMealDeals.com  As all of you know, I love startups.  And there's only a couple of things I like more than writing about local companies trying to make it big.  Those would be old fashioneds (made with rye, not bourbon) and eating out.  AllMealDeals.com happens to help out with the eating out part - specifically saving us money when we go out.

We are a website that offers advertising and marketing solutions for restaurateurs. We are a hosting site for restaurants to post their specials or discounted meals online. We bring the chalk board specials from the streets to the web. We give you the ability to pre purchase your dinner entree’, or special, online for significant savings. We also offer gift cards from participating restaurant at 50% off the retail price.

I used to rely mostly on word of mouth or HubEats (the site run by The Phoenix) to look for meal deals, but now I've got brand new resource to use.  And anything I can do at this point to save money, is a good thing.

Poll: Jersey Shore in South Boston?

2/05/2010 12:03:00 AM 1 Response
So apparently MTV is taking some sort of informal poll to gauge interest in having the 2nd season of Jersey Shore take place in South Boston.

What would happen if the cast of Jersey Shore spent its second season chillin' with the fighting Irish of South Boston? Apparently, a good number of you would like to find out! Forty percent, to be exact. And because I'm a true blue Masshole myself, I gotta agree: this hypothetical mash-up would be WICKED AWESOME to witness.

Think the Princess of Poughkeepsie could keep up with the badass bitches at Reveeeeah Beach? Would the J. Shore juiceheads stack up to my beloved Bostonian jarheads? Vote in the poll and tell us which side of the tracks would take charge in those sure-to-be pub brawls and chick robberies!

Opentable 2009 Awards for Most Vibrant Bar Scenes

2/05/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
There's places that I go to eat.  And then there's places that I go to drink.  Seldom do they overlap, the intersection of my personal dining/drinking venn diagram is pretty small.  And I know I'm late to the game on this one, but I somehow overlooked Opentable's 2009 Diner's Choice Awards for restaurants that had the "Most Vibrant Bar Scenes."  There were a few from our fair city.

Do you enjoy starting — or ending — your evening of dining out with a cocktail at a restaurant’s bar? Of course, you do — which is why OpenTable is pleased to announce the winners of our 2009 Diners’ Choice Awards for restaurants with the “Most Vibrant Bar Scenes.” Derived from nearly four million reviews submitted by OpenTable diners for more than 10,000 restaurants in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, this list speaks to diners who love to mix and mingle at the bar before or after dinner.

Restaurants that made the cut: Vox Populi, Post 390, and 28 Degrees.

I haven't yet been to Post 390, but the other two I've been to for drinks, never food.

Harlem: It's Like Jager But Better

2/03/2010 12:02:00 AM 1 Response
I can't remember the last time I tried a new alcohol.  Actually, I take that back.  I was on a business trip in the south and sweet tea vodka is all the rage there now.  And then prior to that, there was the Absolut Boston release ... but to be honest ... I haven't tried it yet.

Media rep dwillens went out last week for a blogger event for the release of a new European liquer called Harlem.  Here's what he had to say:

A few friends and I made it to a "blogger night out" a few nights ago, where we got to sample an herbal liquer being introduced by the distillers of Ketel One, called Harlem. An herbal liquer, its namesake is Haarlem, a city in North Holland, near Amsterdam; though it seems strange that they would anglicize it, turning it into a name that few Americans will associate with the Netherlands at first glance.

It's similar in consistency to Jager, and is meant to be enjoyed as chilled shots. However, it doesn't include the licorice flavor that makes me cringe whenever someone buys a round of Jager--the predominant flavor is of oranges (the rest is a secret family recipe), and it's a little sweeter and stronger (80 proof vs. 70). In addition to shots, they mixed us a few drinks, of which my favorite was simply Harlem and ginger ale. We also tried a concoction of Harlem, Chambord, and sour mix, which the bartender had invented just for the event. It's worth looking for the bottle next time you're getting a round of shots.

Something reminiscent of taking Jager shots without actually having to take Jager shots?  I'm totally there.  I hate Jager.  Next time someone tries to order it, I'm going to suggest Harlem instead.

Click (here) to check out their website.

I was in Austin, TX this past weekend for a bachelor party.  On one of the evenings we went to a comedy club to go see Kevin Nealon perform.  I realized two things.  1.  He's still pretty damn funny.  2.  I need to go to more comedy shows.  If you're in the same boat as me, you're in luck.  Magners Comedy Festival kicks off in a couple of days and I just took a look at the lineup - it's going to be good.

Magners is excited to bring its considerable comedy pedigree state-side! Annually holding the Magners Glasgow International Comedy Festival, the largest comedy event in Europe, Magners decided to bring the hilarity to Boston MA!

FOR THREE DAYS IN FEBRUARY, Magners hosts 3 nights and 8 shows at Tommy's Comedy Lounge and Nick's Comedy Stop Boston. Come see Gary Gulman, Greg Johnson and Tony V for a Best of Boston showcase, a New York vs. Boston Battle Royale, and a late night Comedy Confessional that could turn a green apple red!

Now if you'll excuse me, it's time to go on youtube and start looking up all these comedians to familiarize myself with some of their work.

Contest: Join Thrillist = Win Fully Stocked Bar of Booze!!!

I got an email from the folks at Thrillist last week that went a little something like this.  "We'd like to give away a fully stocked bar of boutique booze to one of your readers.  Do you think they'd like that?"  I replied "No, I don't think my readers drink at all.  My demographic is mostly nuns and Somali pirates without a permanent address."  Just kidding.  My real reply contained a few curse words followed by an emphatic 'Yes'.

For those of you keeping track, this is probably the best giveaway I've helped conduct so far.  If you miss out on this one.  You will regret it FOREVER!!

Win a Fully-Stocked Bar of Boutique Booze for your Pad!

For your shot to win, sign up for Thrillist, the free daily email that finds the best of what's new or unknown in Boston.

Each day, Thrillist sifts through the crap to bring you info on the one new bar, restaurant, event or service you need to know about that day - whatever it is we promise it won't suck.

Recent discoveries include a secret speakeasy/sushi den, business cards made from laser-etched beef jerky, and a private party lounge in a former pickle factory.

Get on the list for FREE here and you'll be entered to win a fully-stocked bar of boutique booze.

Tell your friends, tell your families, tell your loved ones, tell your enemies, TELL EVERYONE.  And if they win, demand that share the wealth.  If you win, change your phone number and unfriend them on Facebook.  That's what I'd do.
