I had brunch last week with a few of my more artistic friends (one is a novelist, one is a play director, and the other is an actress) and it made me realize that I read way less than I should.  It also doesn't bode well for me that I've never heard of Russell Banks when apparently he's quite the award winner ... and he's going to be here tomorrow.

Russell Banks, best-selling and award-winning author of literary fiction classics including “Continental Drift,” “Cloudsplitter,” “Affliction,” “The Sweet Hereafter” and “The Darling” will be the featured speaker at Wellesley College’s Newhouse Center for the Humanities Distinguished Writers Series Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 4:30pm. The talk, held in Green Hall, is free and open to the public.

His novels "Affliction" and “The Sweet Hereafter” were adapted into feature films that received widespread critical acclaim. James Coburn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and Nick Nolte was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for their roles in “Affliction.”“The Sweet Hereafter” won three awards, including the Grand Prix and the International Critics Award at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival.
