Boston Zombie March - 5/29

5/27/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
Bloggery reader Michelle sent me a one liner about a zombie march that was supposed to be coming up soon and asked if I was interested.  My answer is a resounding ABSOLUTELY!  Who doesn't love zombies?  Here are the details:

Date: Saturday, May 29, 2010
Time: 3:30pm - 8:00pm
Location: South Station

Come one come all and come zombified! We are meeting outside of south station and proceeding upon a determined route to terrorize boston! We will be leaving PROMPTLY at 4 so be there early!

1. you may come as a zombie, a survivor, or a protestor, or anything else ties in with the theme.

2. no physical contact with regular people, if they tell you to go away do it, try not to scare children as well.

3. weapon rules, nerf guns or water guns only, if people ask you not to shoot them don't. I don't care if your airsoft gun isn't loaded do NOT bring it.

4. always stay on the sidewalk unless crossing, and break character when crossing, we don't want the group to be split due to people shambling across the street.

5. don't fuck up, number one rule. don't break anything, ESPECIALLY WHEN GOING THROUGH THE PRUDENTIAL. I have a good relationship with the city and they tolerate this happening every year and i don't want that to change.

6. there are a number of smaller after parties this year, due to personal financial reasons, ie the city bent me over the desk on the costs this year i cannot fund one as i did last year. right now I think i will be hanging out afterwards for a little while and then heading to a party, if you want to come with ask me.

7. come introduce yourself and say thank you to myself and the volunteers, it takes about 6 months of solid work to make this happen every year and varying financial cost not to mention my sanity. it is a free event so all we ask is your appreciation, come say hi and give some feedback.

There are over 3000 confirmed attendees according to Facebook.  I would REALLY like to see that.  If anyone snaps pics (in case I'm not able to), please send them over to me, I'll get them up next week.

Click (here) for the event's FB page.

Tequila Tuedays at Sushi-Teq - 6/2

5/26/2010 12:05:00 AM 0 Responses
I'm a fan of tequila.  It's my summer drink.  Patron on the rocks.  I can't believe it's been almost a year since I went to that Don Julio tasting at Lobby Bar (here).  But never fear, more tequila tastings are on the way, this time at Sushi Teq at the Hotel Intercontinental.

Sushi-Teq, the only tequila and sushi bar of its kind in the U.S. featuring innovative and traditional sushi and 69 premium tequilas, launches its popular ‘Tequila Tuesdays’ on Tues., June 1, 2010. Each Tuesday through September 4, 2010 Tequila Tuesday offers complimentary tequila tastings amidst lounge-style seating, potted palms and salsa music on Sushi-Teq’s outdoor waterfront area. Each week, different tequila is featured (such as Herradura, Patron, Sauza Hornitos, Cazadorez, 1800, El Jimador etc). And, every Tuesday, professional Salsa dancers provide sultry dancing and free Salsa lessons. New this summer, Sushi-Teq features a full margarita bar (in addition to its standard outdoor bar) where guests can purchase a margarita made with their favorite tequila from their tasting.

Every Tuesday - June 1 through September 4, 2010 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

And as the Gorillaz said in that one song from a few years ago that was super popular, "Don't stop, get it, get it."

1000 Words: Stella's 5 Year Anniversary

5/26/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
Congratulations to Stella on their recent 5 year anniversary celebration.  I'm sorry I couldn't be there.  I think I've slept in my own bed 3 days out of this last month.  I'm in Toronto this week.  Luckily, I've got some great folks that are my feet on the street. Stella celebrated their five year anniversary on Monday, and Bloggery Media Rep DanDan was there to check it out.

As a hip restaurant and lounge in the South End, Stella has been a frequent stop for me to grab a good meal or a quick cocktail on my way home from the Boston Medical Center. I had a good idea of what to expect at their five year anniversary event, and Stella did not disappoint. The place was packed within minutes of the opening until well into the evening. Despite how full the place was, the bartenders were fast and their drinks were delicious. Ketel One (my personal favorite vodka) was flowing, and I probably had one too many Ketel Citron and Tonics. Their food, as always, was also great, and they stepped up their game with some delicious sashimi and dumplings stuffed with kobe and pate. As I said, one of my frequent stops, and I will definitely be going back soon!

Where's Lulu - Disability Guide for Bostonians

5/25/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
The Boston edition of Where's Lulu launched earlier this month.  I just checked it out and it's a pretty interesting concept, and I'm thinking pretty useful for folks with disabilities once it's a little more populated.

Where’s Lulu, a website featuring reviews about the accessibility of places and services, now provides a spot for Bostonians to rate everything from the wheelchair accessibility of local restaurants, to the tasty drinks offered at nearby bars.  The company launched in late 2008 and now hosts hundreds of business ratings available in a free, fun, easy-to-use format.

Says Where’s Lulu co-founder and disability rights activist Caitlin “Lulu” Wood: “As a disabled woman, I used to have to hear about accessibility through word-of-mouth, or call a place ahead of time - and even then, I often got the wrong information. Where's Lulu provides a way around that. It's really empowering."

I remember about a year or two ago, my friend Carl, broke his leg playing soccer (yup, playing soccer) and was on crutches for a while.  We went on a pub crawl and it was probably less than enjoyable for him.  Probably would have been worse if we went to bars that had stairs at the entrance.

National Hamburger Day - 5/28

5/24/2010 05:39:00 PM 0 Responses
I love hamburgers.  Actually, I should specify, I love cheeseburgers.  Yum.  So, imagine my delight when I received an email informing me that this Friday is National Hamburger Day - 5/28.  If you didn't get a chance to try the Radius burger for half off last month (here), first of all - shame on you.  Secondly, here's a few other options that will be available for National Hamburger Day.

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar – 217 Stuart Street, Boston, 617.292.0808

Fleming’s succulent “Prime Burger Bar” menu comes fivefold. Choose from Fleming’s Prime Burger (cheddar cheese, peppered bacon - $12; $6 before 7pm nightly); Sliced Filet Mignon Burger (sautéed mushrooms, Béarnaise sauce - $18); Jumbo Lump Crab Cake Burger (creamy mustard sauce - $16); Ahi Tuna Burger (soy ginger sauce - $12); and, Portobello Mushroom Burger (sautéed spinach, creamy goat cheese - $10). All Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar’s options come with signature onion rings.

Legal Sea Foods – all locations

The chefs at Legal Sea Foods are cooking up an ‘al-tuna-tive’ for fish lovers to join in the celebration: a succulent tuna burger that appeals to both carnivores and pescatarians alike. The Tuna Burger, one of their most popular lunch items, is made from ground yellowfin tuna with chili sauce and a crumb mixture of oyster crackers and spices. It’s grilled and then served on a buttery brioche bun with roasted red pepper mayo, ($13.95). Legal Sea Foods also serves up a Niman Ranch Burger, 10 oz. hand packed all natural beef ($10.95).

Stanhope Grille at The Back Bay Hotel – 350 Stuart Street, Boston, 617.266.7200

For burger lovers, Chef Southern packs five different options for $10-and-under: Iron Pan Burger (eight ounce house recipe beef burger, red wine glaze, leaf lettuce, beefsteak tomato, house made relish, Tribecca oven Challah roll - $9); Misty Knoll Tuscan Style Chicken Burger (grilled chicken breast, Tuscan bread, prosciutto, roasted red pepper, Manchego-basil pesto, fresh farmers cheese - $9); Double Portobello Manchego Burger (two extra large Portobello mushrooms layered with Manchego cheese, sweet tomato relish, Tribecca over Challah Roll - $10); Lamb Burger (eight ounce lamb burger iron pan style, arugula, house made relish, goat cheese, Tribecca over Challah roll - $10); and, Sage Cheddar Burger (iron pan burger topped with sage cheddar and caramelized onion - $10).

Stoddard’s Fine Food & Ale – 48 Temple Place, 617.426.0048

Executive Chef Mark Cina’s burger at Stoddard’s Fine Food & Ale is quickly becoming a crowd favorite. The Stoddard’s Burger packs all natural Meyer Ranchbeef and is topped with aged cheddar, chiffonade lettuce, signature Stoddard's burger sauce, fresh onion and B&B pickles ($14). It is served with your choice of house fries or beer-battered onion rings.

Anyone know if there is a National Cream Cheese Danish Day?  Because that would be awesome.

PS.  The image above is the Black Label Burger at Minetta Tavern in NYC.  I almost cried when I ate it; it was THAT delicious.

Anthem Kitchen + Bar Now Open in Faneuil Hall

5/24/2010 02:39:00 AM 0 Responses
I was supposed to swing by Faneuil Hall a few weeks ago for a pub crawl of sorts, but we had dinner at Jacob Wirth's first and never made it out of there.  We somehow managed to rack up a $1500 bill while we were there, which is A LOT of food and beer.  New to the Faneuil Hall area is Anthem Kitchen + Bar which took the place of the old Plaza III Steakhouse space.

The Briar Group is delighted to introduce Anthem into Boston’s dynamic downtown. Located steps from State Street, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Waterfront, and within walking distance to several of the city’s most coveted sites and destinations, Anthem offers guests a twist on traditional comfort food in a lively Americana setting. With affordable menus for lunch, dinner and late night dining, it’s the perfect spot for client entertaining, drinks after work or just to relax and refuel after a long week.

I was told the kitchen serves select dishes until 1am and cocktails until 2am!  And if you're still hungry after that, there's always Chinatown which is just down the street.  =)

I've been sifting through my emails to look for something to blog about tonight and honestly, I'm way too worn out. It was been one hell of a week. And so I give you this:

A really big vodka soda.  Normally it would be a scotch - Glenmorangie or Dalwhinnie.  But I overdid it last weekend on the scotch, so I promised my liver I'd refrain for 1 week.  So in the meantime, VODKA!

It's five o'clock somewhere.  That's all I can say.

Thrillist + Sports Club LA Promo

5/20/2010 02:28:00 AM 0 Responses
I spent many years working out at the Sports Club LA.  I love that place.  But, I finally gave it up because I was paying $270 a month for an executive membership and I wasn't getting any fitter.  For that kind of money I was expecting to be able to don some cutoff jeans and land a role as a werewolf in one of those twilight movies.  Long story short, I'm too lazy and it was costing me an arm and a leg, so I quit.

For those of you who are interested in checking it out though, I just saw that the folks at Thrillist have teamed up with the SCLA to offer a pretty decent promotion.

Enjoy a Complimentary 3-Day Membership for you and a friend* and when you become a Member by May 27th you will receive:

* $0 Initiation Fee,** plus pay no dues until July
* Two complimentary Private Training Sessions
* Complimentary Nutritional Assessment
* Complimentary upgrade on a Spa Session

Popchips Come to Boston

5/20/2010 02:09:00 AM 1 Response
I don't entertain much anymore.  Mostly because I have no friends.  But about a month ago, I had some friends over after a night of bar hopping and one of them said to me 'dude, what kind of junk food do you have?'  Now you have to understand that I've been 'dieting' for quite some time now, so I don't keep junk food in my house.  My response to him was "I have peanuts and almonds."  I think he was about to leave then and there.  After that night, I always keep two bags of chips in the cupboard in case of emergency.  I never eat them, I just have them for guests.  Enter Popchips - a snack that I could keep in my cupboard for guests and eat myself as well.

Popchips, the next generation potato chip, are now available in six taste-bud popping flavors in stores across Boston! Thanks to the magic of popping, popchips have all the flavor and less than half the fat of fried chips. What’s left out are all the trans fat, cholesterol, fake colors and flavors that give snacking a bad name.

To celebrate popchips’ arrival into Beantown, we’re donating approximately 20,000 bags of our taste-bud popping chips to local organizations including the Greater Boston Food Bank, Paul Pierce Get Fit34, American Cancer society, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, Friends of Boston's Homeless, Pitching in for Kids, Project Smile, Green Schools Organization, and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Additionally, we’ll be popping up in all Liberty Hotel mini bars, Boston Pops, the “Becket Bowl,” Flip Flop Regatta for the Ally Zapp Foundation and many more! Local nutritionist Debra Wein also recommends popchips in her top 10 list of Boston Beach Bag essentials!

The folks over at Popchips were kind enough to send me some samples of the chips to try.  I ate the salt and pepper ones today (they were pretty darn good) and I've got my eye on the bag of bbq ones for tomorrow.

Bring B-Cycle to Boston

5/18/2010 12:03:00 AM 1 Response
Bloggery reader Jerel sent this over to me.  There's a new company out there that's like zipcar for bicycles and they're currently polling folks to see where they should expand to next after they debut in Denver.

Set up like a certain car-share service for pedal-mobiles, B's setting up stations across cities that'll grant you access to a two-wheeler whenever you want, and not just because someone left it unlocked outside the bar, and it's freezing, and you're in college so what the hell's anyone going to do about it. Pick a membership option (24-hr to yearly) and B'll mail you a universal swipe card that'll unlock a ride, or just show up and rent on-site; once you've used, drop it off at any station you want.

Normally, this never would have caught my attention ... because I don't know how to ride a bike, but I just checked the stats on the page and Boston is in 18th place.  That's just not right.  I don't care what it is, we should win.

17th Annual Radio 92.9 EarthFest - 5/22

5/18/2010 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
I love the summer.  And it seems like just yesterday when I went to last year's Earthfest.  I can still remember it, my friends Gwen, Missy, and Eric (and I) hung out for a while listening to some live music, visited all the vendors outside and just lounged around outside for the morning.  This year, the Earthfest will be taking place on Saturday 5/22.

The 17th annual Radio 92.9 EarthFest will return to DCR’s Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston on May 22, 2010, from Noon to 5:00 pm. Presented by Whole Foods Market, the free festival is a celebration for the Earth, showcasing national and local music acts, environmentally friendly products and local non-profit environmental organizations.

In addition to the musical performances on the main stage, the Radio 92.9 Earthfest will also feature Kids’ Planet – an expanded interactive family area. Kids’ Planet will feature a stage with a wide variety of musical acts and entertainment as well as environmental activities and educational displays. Activities in Kids’ Planet will begin at 10 a.m.

I just scoped out the page to see the headliners, what a blast from the past:  Collective Soul, Gin Blossoms, Crash Kings, and Marcy Playground.

1000 Words: ArtBar Patio Now Open

5/17/2010 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
Bloggery Media Reps dwillens and dandan swung by the opening of the ArtBar patio over in Cambridge last week.  Here's what they had to say:

The event was pretty good -- the patio is nice as always and the weather definitely cooperated yesterday. The mixed drinks were a little sweet for my taste so I stuck with Sam Adams most of the time. The statue in the last picture is a piece they dredged out of the Charles a few years ago. The guys who found it took it over to the MFA but they said it's not worth much--too much water damage, I guess; so they gave it to ArtBar to put on the patio. I heard that the owner is taking bets on how long it will be before some drunk wedding guest steals it. My money is on the guy who stepped in while I was taking the picture ... in two weeks.

Boston Pops - The Dream Lives On - 5/18

5/14/2010 12:41:00 AM 0 Responses
Looks like there's going to be a handful of celebrities in town next week for the world premiere by the Boston Pops called The Dream Lives On:  A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers.

On Tuesday, May 18, at 8 p.m., acclaimed actors Robert De Niro, Ed Harris, and Morgan Freeman give life to the words of John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy, respectively, when they join fellow narrator Cherry Jones, conductor Keith Lockhart, and the Boston Pops Orchestra for the world premiere performance of The Dream Lives On: A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers, at Symphony Hall in Boston, MA.

The first major musical tribute of its kind to Massachusetts native sons John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy, this new multi-media work, combining quotes from speeches by the Kennedy brothers with original text and video, accompanied by a dramatic orchestral and choral score, pays tribute to the towering achievements and singular spirit epitomized by the Kennedy brothers.

Looks like tickets are still available.

Carry Around a DD Iced Coffee and Win

5/13/2010 12:34:00 AM 1 Response
Doesn't really strike me as iced coffee weather but this might make it worth it.  A chance to win a bunch of prizes just for being spotted having some Dunkin Donuts Iced Coffee.

Beginning Thursday, May 13, Dunkin’ Donuts will launch a two-day blitz where a fleet of street teams in Dunkin’ Donuts branded Toyota Yaris’ will travel to various communities throughout Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire to seek out loyal Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee drinkers. On Thursday, May 13 and Friday, May 14 between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., anyone spotted drinking a Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee will be given Boston Bruins playoff tickets to the team’s next home game or a “Boston Brewin” t-shirt. The street teams will be armed with more than 100 playoff tickets and 2,500 t-shirts.

The last Bruins game I went to was one against the Montreal Canadians.  I never knew we disliked Canada so much. ;)

Bela Fleck Headlining the Naukabout Festival

5/06/2010 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
I have seen Bela Fleck twice in concert. Each time, he never ceases to amaze me. You'd never think that banjo music could be awesome, but it is. Absolutely amazing.
Tickets just went on sale this week for the Naukabout Festival of Cape Code.

The Naukabout, the 3rd Annual Festival of Cape Cod, will return to the Barnstable County Fairgrounds in Falmouth on Saturday, August 7, 2010, from 12:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The 2010 event will feature The Naukabout’s most impressive lineup to date. Multi-Grammy award winner Bela Fleck, world class Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain and contemporary bassist Edgar Meyer will perform as a trio to headline the festival.

Internet Flavored Ice Cream

5/05/2010 01:59:00 AM 0 Responses
I love this.  Mostly because I went to MIT, and I'm a big fan of nerds (the people and the candy).

How to represent the Internet in edible form? That's the challenge that the Boston-based Toscanini's faced when they decided to honor this year's Internet culture conference ROFLCon with a new flavor.

There are lots of directions you could go with this. Red Bull-flavored ice cream with swirls of espresso. A Mountain Dew-base flavor with chocolate bacon chunks. Something wildly ironic from Humphry Slocombe maybe?

Turns out, friends, they chose something much simpler and more direct, a solution as elegant as a mathematical proof.

Internet ice cream? A vanilla ice-cream base. With Nerds in it.

I may have to give it a try.

Cinco de Mayo at Sushi-Teq

5/05/2010 01:52:00 AM 0 Responses
It's starting to warm up, so it's time for me to switch to my summer drink:  patron on the rocks with a lime.  Although, I'm in search of a better blanco tequila.  I've been told Tres Generaciones is good.  Or Don Julio.

Sushi-Teq, the only restaurant/bar of its kind in the U.S. featuring sushi and 69 different tequilas, celebrates Cinco de Mayo beginning Wed., May 5 through Fri., May 7, 2010 from 5 - 11 p.m. Sushi-Teq will be offering special Mexican snacks and sushi with Mexican influences to parlay with its array of blanco, reposado and añejo sipping tequilas, margaritas, flights and specialty tequila cocktails. On Sat., May 8, the celebration will culminate with a live Mariachi band from 5 pm - 1 am in the lobby adjacent to Sushi-Teq. There is no cover charge and reservations are not required.

The Intercontinental is still my favorite hotel bar to drink in.  I suppose I could wander next door from Rumba to Sushi Teq for some Cinco de Mayo celebrating.

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer - 5/3 to 5/9

5/04/2010 12:53:00 AM 2 Responses
So today I really wanted some dessert after my dinner, so I swung by the grocery store and bought this frozen brownie ice cream sundae thing.  Basically you microwave this small bowl of brownie batter for 30 seconds, and then put the ice cream on top afterwards.  It's like the molten chocolate cake at Finale, but wayyyyy more ghetto.  I'm usually a pretty good 'cook' but somehow I managed to burn microwave brownie batter.

Two things came out of this.  1.  my apartment smells like smoke.  2.  I should leave the baking to the folks at the 11th Annual Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer event which started yesterday.

Make Mother’s Day special this year by treating the important women in your life to fabulous desserts while also helping fight breast cancer. During the week leading up to Mother’s Day, May 3 – 9, more than 150 restaurants, bakeries, cafés and chocolate shops throughout Massachusetts will participate in Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer by preparing unique desserts. Desserts will cost around $8 and 100% of sales will benefit breast cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
