Update on The Prisoners

7/30/2009 12:48:00 AM 1 Response
So I know that we're all about "The Fighter" right now - featuring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, but don't forget there's a second movie that they're going to be doing together here called "The Prisoners" (here). Here's the latest:

Alcon Entertainment has bought Aaron Guzikowski's spec "The Prisoners" and is fast-tracking the kidnap thriller for a fall 2010 release by Warner Bros. The story centers on a small-town carpenter whose young daughter and best friend are kidnapped. After the cops fail to find them, the man turns vigilante and starts an investigation of his own.

Well I guess they'll just have to get started right after they finish The Fighter. You think Christian Bale will need to gain some weight back before doing this 2nd film? That man needs a sandwich.

Review: Lobby Bar Tuesday Tastings

7/29/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
If you didn't check out the Lobby Bar Tuesday Tastings when I first blogged about them (here), let me try again - this time with hard evidence. My friend Kristin and I went to the Don Julio Tasting last night and it was awesome.

What you saw was the: Blanco (unaged), Reposado (aged 6 months), Anejo (aged 1 yr), and 1942 (aged 2.5 yrs). Don't quote me on those ages, I was under the influence of a lot of tequila while trying to remember pertinent information.

I've never had $150 tequila, but that's what I hear the 1942 goes for. And it's quite delicious. My drink for this summer has been Patron on the rocks with a lime. But now I'm rather tempted to switch to Don Julio Anejo on the rocks with a lime (or possibly no lime).

$25 for food and booze? That's a great deal.

Click (here) to visit the Lobby Bar website.

PS. I know the site says it's an hour long tasting, but we were there for 3.5 hours and loving every minute of it.

BTB Goes to NYC - Part 1

7/28/2009 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
I've been to NYC more times than I can remember, but this past weekend was by far the most awesome of all my trips. Great food, celebrity sightings and overall chillin.

Food:

Omakase @ Sasabune - chef's choice sushi tasting menu. Definitely one of the best sushi meals I've ever had.

Burgers & Steak @ Peter Luger - this place is renowned for their steak. But I was also told that their burgers (only served at lunch) are really great too. Soooo, we had both. Each of us had a burger and we shared a porterhouse on top of that.

Black Label Burger @ Minetta Tavern - this may have been the best burger I've ever eaten EVER.

Chocolate Cookie & Ice Cream @ Bouchon Bakery - I was told that this year Per Se actually surpassed French Laundry. I didn't have the chance to eat at Per Se, but we did stop by Bouchon Bakery for a snack. The cookie was warm and melty and the vanilla bean ice cream it came with was phenomenal.

Brazilian Food @ Esperanto - Had dinner at this really cute restaurant in the East Village. Live music, passion fruit caipirinhas, and amazing Brazilian food.

Celebrity Sightings:

Alton Brown @ Sasabune - Alton Brown is my favorite chef on the food network. I love the whole explaining the science of cooking thing that he does. He was there having dinner with a friend and we were the only other group in the restaurant.

Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, and Bill Hader @ Minetta Tavern
- the three of them were in a group of about 15 people having dinner. If you haven't read the reviews, Minetta Tavern is apparently one of the hippest places in town. I had to try real hard to prevent myself from giggling like a schoolgirl when I saw them.

I'll post some pics of the food tomorrow.

PS. I rode Bolt Bus to and from NYC. It's my preferred means of transport. Although I would like to try the double decker megabus sometime.

Cupcake Crawl in Boston

7/28/2009 12:03:00 AM 1 Response
Jen from BeantownBaker.com shot me over a link to her results from the cupcake crawl that she went on this past weekend with her friends. My interest is piqued because I like Sweet cupcakes and it was ranked 3rd out of the five bakeries. That means I really need to check out Babycakes and Kickass Cupcakes myself.

If you'd like to know the actual scores from the day, I averaged everyone's ratings. I just averaged all the categories together into one final score. As a reminder, the categories for scoring were Overall Flavor, Moistness, Cupcake to Frosting Ratio, and Frosting Flavor. Everyone scored each bakery on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best.

With that, here are the results:

BabyCakes - 4.6
KickAss - 4.4

Sweet - 3.6

Lyndell's - 3.5

Party Favors - 3.2

Jen's also got some really great pics of the cupcakes (before and after) that she sampled at each place.

Trailer: The Invention of Lying

7/28/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
A little over a year ago, Ricky Gervais was in town filming what was called "This Side of the Truth" at the time along with Jonah Hill, Tina Fey, Rob Lowe, Jennifer Garner, and Louis CK (here). Well, the trailer is out now and the movie has been renamed to: The Invention of Lying.

What'd you think? Looks pretty hilarious to me. Lowell sure is getting some action these days. First this movie last year and now The Fighter (here).

The Suitcase: A Local Film

7/27/2009 12:52:00 AM 0 Responses
You guys know how much I love the fact that we have a ton of feature films being made in Boston. Something that I don't read too much about, though, are the indie films that are being made here as well. But these guys deserve mad props. Because they were filming here pre-"tax incentive" and they'll be here post-"tax incentive" (heaven forbid it actually ever goes away)

That being said, there is a new local movie coming out: The Suitcase.

This is a real local indie, having been shot in and around Boston, Chelmsford as well as Nashua and Rhode Island.

The script, written by David Garfield, includes several separate stories tied together by ownership of the suitcase. Sporadic flashbacks of back-story are in black and white film noire adding to the tension, as we follow each new owner. Unusual phenomena and bizarre psychological effects can only be explained by learning about the original owner of the object, a deranged door to door salesman. Is it just his psychotic behavior that makes an old suitcase torment its victims or is there more? In a final twist, the chilling conclusion will leave you speechless.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead - 7/30

7/27/2009 12:30:00 AM 0 Responses
My older brother is about six years older than me. So when he was in highschool, I was 10-11 years old. Bear with me, I swear this is relevant. When he was in highschool, his class read and watched Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. Afterwards, he came home and tried to teach me how to play 'verbal tennis'. I lost. Give me a break, I was 10.

That being said, several years later, I read/saw it myself and now have fond memories of that particular Tom Stoppard play. Starting 7/30, Bad Habit Productions will be putting on the play - and all of us should go see it.

Experience Hamlet from the point of view of two of its minor characters navigating a world of existential angst, frustrated actors, and palace intrigue. In every dark tragedy lies an even darker comedy.

Performances July 30 - August 9 , 2009
YMCA Cambridge

820 Massachusetts Ave
Cambridge, MA 02139

PS. I suddenly have the urge to flip a coin 92 times.

Big Papi's Opens Today - 7/24

7/24/2009 12:20:00 AM 1 Response
I first blogged about David Ortiz's investment and transformation of Metro 9 into "Big Papi's" right before July 4th (here). Well the wait is over, the restaurant opens TODAY!

Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, known to baseball fans everywhere as “Big Papi”, will open his first restaurant, Big Papi’s Grille, in Framingham, Mass. The upscale casual restaurant is designed to appeal to a wide audience, with featured menu items that include high quality steaks, Kobe beef burgers, hearty pasta dishes and much more.

David Ortiz is a financial partner in the restaurant, owned by Classic Restaurant Concepts. The restaurant, currently being operated as the Metro 9 Steak House, will remain open through July 21. Big Papi’s Grille will be closed on July 23 for a private party hosted by David Ortiz before opening to the public on July 24.

See below for a video interview of Big Papi about the restaurant.

Sadly, I'm headed to NYC for the weekend this afternoon, so I won't be able to swing by opening night. Steaks and Kobe burgers though sound pretty good. Good thing I'm going to be swinging by Peter Lugers and Minetta Tavern this weekend - burgers and steaks will be had.

AC Milan vs Intermilan - 7/26

7/24/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
I don't know anything about soccer, but apparently this upcoming game on Sunday is a pretty big deal. A friend of mine has been talking about this game for a week, needless to say he'll be there. Here's what UrbanDaddy has to say:

Two of Europe's best soccer teams square off in Foxboro Sunday as AC Milan (you know, David Beckham's other team) takes on cross-town rival Inter Milan. This is sort of like if there were two NFL teams in Boston, and they decided to play each other in Italy one day. Expect hot tempers, trash talk and a few magic moments from Ronaldinho.

I just checked and tickets are still available so get them while you still can. More importantly, I checked the weather and it looks like no rain this weekend.

Andy Husbands on Hell's Kitchen

7/23/2009 12:45:00 AM 3 Responses
I don't watch reality tv, so I haven't seen any episodes of this season's Hell's Kitchen, but I may start - so I can root for our very own Andy Husbands.

The silence is semi-over. Chef Andy Husbands of Tremont 647 did not go to Mexico last January as everyone thought. He was actually slaving away in LA as one of the 16 contestants for the upcoming season of Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen. Husbands won’t tell all yet — he can’t say how many cuts he survived and how many episodes he’s in — but he is willing to talk about what it was like to be on camera 24/7

I ate brunch at Tremont 647 once while I lived in the South End. Usually I didn't make it that far down Tremont because I'd stop in at either Metropolis or Aquitaine before I made it to 647. I remember having lobster grits served by a dude wearing pajamas.

I haven't been watching, does anyone know if he's still on the show?

Louie Evans - A Boston Legend

7/23/2009 12:24:00 AM 0 Responses
I can't even count the number of times I've seen Louie biking down the streets of Boston over the years. It's nice to finally put a name with the face. I stumbled across the video interview of Louie a little while ago, but kept putting this post off. Finally it's time to get it up.

Louie Evans has become a Boston legend by riding around the city on his tricycle and yelling what some people call a "siren noise." Who is he? Why does he ride? Interviews with the employees of Back Bay Bicycles, the store that does complimentary repairs for Louie's bike, and Louie himself outline the mysterious 'trike rider's life as a dedicated bicyclist and as a compassionate, misunderstood person.

Back Bay Bicycles, where most of the interviews take place, pays out of pocket for all of Louie’s repairs and tune-ups (thousands of dollars now), so if you’re in the Boston area, I strongly suggest giving them business.

I took these pics of Louie one day while walking down Boylston. Be sure to visit the website though with the documentary/interview of him - it's awesome.

Oprah Also Going to MV?

7/22/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
Martha's Vineyard is going to be HAPPENING in August. Apparently in addition to the Obamas (here), Oprah is thinking about swinging by as well.

Word on The Rock is that President Barack Obama’s BFF Oprah Winfrey reportedly is trying to rent a massive estate in Katama on Martha’s Vineyard for the last two weeks in August.

Other scuttlebutt on the island is that the Secret Service has scoped out Blue Heron Farm in West Tisbury as a possible landing spot for the First Fam.

BTW, the latest guesstimate on the Obamas’ arrival has the prez pulling in on Aug. 23 with Michelle and the girls arriving a couple of days sooner.

There you have it. You don't need to go all the way to Chicago to see Oprah, just swing by MV this summer.

Sales Tax Increases to 6.25% on 8/1

7/21/2009 12:34:00 AM 1 Response
Before I started this blog (can you believe it's been two years?) I was pretty oblivious to what was going on in Boston, so I have a feeling this will be news to some of you. Especially you college kids who spend all your time drinking ... I mean studying. Sales tax is about to increase from 5% to 6.25%

Struggling retailers in Massachusetts are rolling out huge discounts and blasting e-mails and letters to consumers, urging them to make big purchases before the 5 percent sales tax increases to 6.25 percent on Aug. 1.

The tax increase applies to nearly all retail sales. Current exemptions, such as the sale of food (other than restaurant meals) and individual items of clothing costing $175 or less, remain in effect. But the state has repealed the exemption for alcoholic beverages purchased at shops; those, too, will be taxed at 6.25 percent starting in August.

If you've got some shopping you need done, better do it soon. Then again, I know lots of folks that do their big ticket item shopping in NH where there isn't any sales tax (although I believe you're not supposed to do that).

Obama's Coming to MV Confirmed

7/21/2009 12:28:00 AM 1 Response
Rumors started as early as April, that President Obama and his family would be spending part of the summer on Martha's Vineyard this year. Well it was finally just confirmed by the White House.

President Obama and his family are planning to vacation on Martha’s Vineyard next month, the White House confirmed yesterday without releasing details.

The visit, which will occur during the last week of August, has been rumored for months, and the Secret Service has already booked reservations at several hotels. It is unclear where the family of four will stay, but one option could be Oak Bluffs, the historical center of the island’s black community.

MV is pretty small, for those of you that are MV residents and/or experts - where are the most popular destinations there? Maybe you can catch a glimpse of the President. I've only been twice on a couple of short daytrips so I wouldn't know where to begin.

1000 Words - Speed's Hot Dogs

7/20/2009 02:02:00 AM 1 Response
I hung out with some buddies of mine this past Friday and went to the driving range. I forget the name of it but it was in Quincy and it was really nice - on top of a cliff of some sort - had a great view of the city.

On the way back into Boston, we swung by Speed's for one of their famous hot dogs. I'd read a lot about it, but it was my first time having one.

Biggest hot dog I've ever had. I got mine loaded, and while I do think it was quite tasty, it was a bit too sweet for my taste.

For the past 2 weeks, each time I've gone to Neptune's, they've been out of their bay scallops. I went yesterday for a quick bite and luckily they just got some in.

My friend Michelle was visiting from out of town so in order to cram as many Bostonian meals as possible into one weekend, we started off by walking to James Hook and grabbing a lobster roll to share as we walked to Legal's (by the Aquarium). Stopped in for a cup of chowder, then walked to Neptune's to grab a few oysters, scallops, and cherrystones. And then finished up at Mike's with a canolli and a slice of Boston creme pie.

Mail Order Oysters - Island Creeks

7/17/2009 12:50:00 AM 1 Response
I used to go to B&G for my oyster fix. But then I moved out of the South End and then subsequently discovered Neptune's in the North End. And whereas Island Creeks aren't my favorite (that distinction is reserved for Hurricane Harbors) they are quite tasty and now you can get them pretty cheap direct from the oyster people.

Island Creek Oysters, a boutique oyster farm on Massachusetts's Duxbury Bay, has been supplying high-end restaurants like Per Se and Charlie Trotter's--even the White House--for years. Now, oyster lovers no longer have to drop $200 on dinner to sample these beautifully briny, rough-shelled bivalves.

Island Creek's new online store (and FedEx delivery) makes it possible to shuck a fresh oyster ($100 for 100 or $18 a dozen) within 24 hours of its harvest--anywhere in the continental United States. It also sells wild razor clams ($5.75 a pound) and in-the-shell jumbo scallops ($3.50 a pound) harvested from a Cape Cod day boat, as well as essential oyster-shucking gloves and knives.

I actually drooled a little as I typed this post. Oysters obviously you eat raw, but the other two - in-the-shell scallops and razor clams are AMAZING if you steam them with garlic and vermicelli.

Click (here) to shop online.

PS. If anyone from Neptune's is reading, I'm pretty disappointed that the last 2 times I've come for lunch - there haven't been any bay scallops available from the raw bar.

Late Night Sushi @ Kingfish Hall

7/17/2009 12:45:00 AM 0 Responses
I usually get my late night sushi fix from Zen in Beacon Hill, but they close at 10pm'ish so I wouldn't really consider them that late. That's why when I read about the new sushi bar at Kingfish Hall I was pretty psyched.

So we're pleased to reveal his new SUSHI at Kingfish Hall, opening [July 16]. Think of it as your new late-night dining option, and reason to hang out in Faneuil Hall once the tourists return to their hotel rooms.

West Coast Japanese-style masters have been enlisted for this, but wasting their skills on California rolls would be a crime. Instead, test their talents with the off-the-menu
Screaming Tuna Roll—it's tuna, sriracha, cucumbers, scallions and tempura flakes in a wasabi soy wrapper with a side of citron ponzu sauce.

Opens July 16, serving Thurs-Sat until 1am

Ok so it's only open late 3 nights a week, but that's better than nothing.

The last time the Village Smokehouse had a dinner, it was a wine dinner. And someone complained that for a real bbq dinner folks should not be drinking wine. Well this time around, you're getting your wish. On 7/20 the Village Smokehouse is having a beer dinner.

The Village Smokehouse and Wachusett Brewing Company will satisfy hunger in Lowell with the ultimate summer meal of BBQ and Beer at their first ever Beer Dinner on Monday, July 20, 2009. This evening of food and beer will include a fabulous BBQ buffet featuring appetizers, dinner, and dessert accompanied with an assortment of beer from Wachusett Brewery. Located at 98 Middle Street in Lowell, The Village Smokehouse’s Beer Dinner will take place at 7p.m. Tickets are $30, tax & gratuity excluded. Reservations are suggested and can be made at 978-441-2278.

It's the summer, there's not much else I can think of that would be better than local bbq and local beer. DELICIOUS!

MA is 6th for % of Millionaires

7/15/2009 12:40:00 AM 0 Responses
After three years in fifth place, we just got unseated by the state of Virginia for highest percentage of millionaires. I had to read the intro paragraph twice because I would have sworn that NYC would be on there if it were number of millionaires, but since it's percentage I suppose that makes sense.

As recently as 2008, 6 percent of the state’s households had net worths of $1 million or more, Phoenix Marketing International researchers found. This year, the figure fell to 5.5 percent. That’s 137,792 millionaire households out of 2.5 million households overall.

The top four this year were: Hawaii, Maryland, New Jersey and Connecticut.

What's more interesting/useful in terms of information, the percentage of millionaires? or the absolute number of millionaires? I'd think absolute number would be more relevant.
