Sam Adams Pint Night - 4/30

4/30/2009 12:33:00 AM 0 Responses
Who's looking for something to do tonight? I am. Actually not until midnight'ish though. I was on an alcohol embargo during the month of April which ends tonight at midnight, so I'm thinking I'm going to hit up one of these bars that's participating in Sam Adams Ultimate Pint Night.

Want to learn how the Samuel Adams perfect pint beer glass can enhance your drinking experience? Join us on Thursday evening, April 30th for the Samuel Adams Ultimate Pint Night and taste the difference for yourself! You may remember us telling you about our pint glass pictured above.

This Thurday night we'll be at bars throughout Boston sampling the finer points of Samuel Adams Boston Lager, demonstrating what the glass can do and handing out cool Samuel Adams gear. We'll even give away some glasses! At each location you can also enter to win a private beer & food tasting with our brewers!

I have some sort of MIT alumni thing earlier in the evening, which means I'll already be out with my friends. Won't be too hard to persuade them to head out to the bars afterwards.

Amex John Legend Presale

4/30/2009 12:26:00 AM 0 Responses
It's that time again, it's time to call in a favor from your friend with an American Express card (if you don't have one yourself). Last time it was the Dave Matthews concert, this time it's John Legend.

John Legend at Bank of America Pavilion
Date: Friday 08/07/09
Show: 7:30 p.m.

Presale: Now – Thur 5/7 at 5pm

I'm not really a John Legend fan, but I know a fair number of folks that are, so hopefully they'll jump on this. Bank of America Pavilion is a pretty fun avenue for music. I haven't been there since the Hilary Duff concert a couple years back (I'm not joking).

The Boston Baked Bean

4/29/2009 01:13:00 AM 0 Responses
A couple of weeks ago, my friend Ann was in town for her first ever visit to Boston. On her last day here, we were strolling Faneuil Hall looking for Boston-themed souvenirs and didn't really find much besides some t-shirts. You know where we should have gone? The Boston Baked Bean aka Beantown Toys on Newbury St.

By pure chance, I got to meet with a couple of the folks from Beantown Toys today: their CEO Tom and their webmaster/toy designer Marc. Great guys, with a shop full of great Boston-themed stuff.

I've probably walked down Newbury St. hundreds of times, and this is the first time I've stopped in. It was fun in there. I highly recommend you check it out sometime especially if you've got kids and/or friends visiting from out of town.

Wale and Lady Gaga are going to be in town on Monday, May 4 to shoot a music video and you quite possibly could have a chance to be in it. Here's the scoop from Karmaloop.

Hey Karmaloop Fam,

Wale and Lady Gaga are shooting a video in Boston next Monday, some Karmaloop staff is in it but we need more people...

Two requirements: you must look fly and dress fly i.e. If you are good looking, have a unique style, and wear Karmaloop gear you are good to go!!!

If you are interested send your info: name, age, height, weight, email, cell # and pictures to:
gio@karmaloop.com & boss@elitaste.com

The shoot will start on Monday, May 4th in the morning and go all day. No cash but, FAME, FUN, & FREE FOOD.

Ok, so I read both requirements and I fail both. I neither look fly nor do I dress fly. So I guess it's up to you guys.

PS. Many thanks to Vivian via Eugene for the email.

Beantown Bloggery Facelift

4/28/2009 04:13:00 AM 9 Responses
Sooooo, I just stayed up all night redoing the entire layout of the Beantown Bloggery. I hope you like it, because with the limited computer knowledge that I have, I doubt I can change it back even If I wanted to.

It's 4:15am right now. Hopefully that gives me at least a couple more hours to keep tweaking the page and adding links/content to it before anyone wakes up and starts reading it.

I invite you to take a look and let me know what you think. I'm still getting the hang of this new layout so there will be more tweaking in the days/weeks to come. Man, I really wish I stayed Course 6 (EE/CS) while I was at MIT. Some programming skills would really come in handy right about now.

There are currently 4 proposed movie studio ventures in Massachusetts, the most famous one is the one in Plymouth, but I stumbled upon a nice little Boston.com summary that has some details on all four of them. 2nd Chance Wedding Dress Sale Part 2 - 5/2

4/28/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
Well, it looks like tis the season to be getting married because the first Second Chance wedding dress sale (here) did so well earlier this month that they're doing it again in May.

The upcoming May 2nd affair will include the sale of wedding dresses, donated from the private collection of a greyhound adopter. The dresses have been previously worn, but are in excellent condition. The dresses vary in style, with some including trains and others veils. Gown prices begin at $99.00. Second Chances hosted a similar sale at their Natick location in early April and because of the interest generated are bringing the remaining dresses from the collection to Boston.

This one-day sale will help brides-to-be manage their wedding budget and support a terrific cause all at the same time. The event will take place on May 2nd from 11:00am to 2:30pm at Doyle's Cafe, located at 3484 Washington Street in Jamaica Plain.

Shop for a wedding dress, save some cash, and save a racing dog all at the same time. Since we're saving animals, I'll refrain from using the metaphor about killing birds with stones.

Puma City at Fan Pier

4/28/2009 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
I had quite a day yesterday. I spent the bulk of the afternoon at Fan Pier touring the Volvo Ocean Race grounds and meeting with the folks at Puma City (here). It was a great time, the weather was beautiful, and everyone I met was awesome.

Let's see, I met numerous other area bloggers, loads of Puma folks, and a couple of the guys that are actually part of the crew of the Puma race boat and hear about their trials and tribulations. We also got to take a tour of the Puma training boat - I can say with certainty that I would not want to sleep/live/race in that thing for 9 months. If you want to check it out, there's a reality web series about them on RipeTV (here).

I highly recommend everyone swing by Fan Pier and check it out while the Volvo Ocean Race is in town. It's a pretty neat experience and it'll be a chance to swing by the harbor and enjoy the warm weather. They're also selling some pretty cool gear on the 1st floor retail area of Puma City.

Bale & Wahlberg Also in "The Fighter"

4/27/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
So last week I blogged about a potential movie called "The Prisoners" starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg and how I've got my fingers crossed that they film it in Boston (here).

This may have caused a little confusion for some of you because there is actually a 2nd Boston related movie in the works starring both Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg called "The Fighter." At least one commenter pointed that out in my previous post.

Pic tells the story of Boston fighter "Irish" Mickey Ward and how he was helped to the world lightweight championship by half-brother Dicky Eklund. Eklund once decked Sugar Ray Leonard and went the distance against the boxing legend before forfeiting his career to drugs and crime. He redeemed himself by training Ward through his Rocky-like run to the title.

From what I undertand Mark Wahlberg has always been attached to it, but the addition of Christian Bale is recent. His character was supposed to be played by Matt Damon, who was replaced by Brad Pitt, who was replaced by Bale.

So I guess Christian and Mark can just stay in Boston for several months and film both movies back to back. That'd be pretty sweet.

2nd Sweet Opens Tuesday - 4/28

Puma City @ Fan Pier - 4/25 to 5/16

4/24/2009 12:04:00 AM 0 Responses
Coming along with the Volvo Ocean Race is an event/shopping experience called Puma City. I'm not even sure how to describe it, but I'll have a better idea next week - I got invited to take a tour on Monday.

PUMA City consists of three levels of steel shipping containers stacked on top of one another and then slightly shifted to create natural outdoor spaces with large overhangs and wide open terraces, which will be utilized for entertaining and in-port race viewing. A unique PUMA retail space on the ground floor offers a selection of the PUMA Sailing, Motorsport, Urban Mobility and PUMA Archives apparel, footwear and accessories collections.

According to the ad that I ripped out of a magazine earlier this week, there's also going to be a bar, and a dance floor in addition to the retail store. I'm thinking it'll be a pretty neat place to hang out before or after catching a glimpse of all the yachts that will be in town for the race.

News Lounge To Become Splash Lounge

4/24/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
I was wondering what happened to News when it closed down a couple months ago. Well it looks like Frank De Pasquale (who owns quite a bit of stuff in the North End) is reopening the space as a lounge called "Splash."

According to the Improper Bostonian, Splash Lounge will open on Memorial Day and it will be a "Las Vegas inspired lounge" whatever that means. Here's a few things that the lounge is going to include: indoor pool tables and a "fancy rooftop deck with cabanas, beds, and a fountain."

Beds? We're not Miami. Those 'rooftop beds' are going to be really gross in about a month and a half after opening. But then again, I'm sure it's gimmicky enough to draw a crowd, the same way the mechanical bull does at Liquor Store.

Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Boston - 4/25

4/24/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
This is a pretty big deal. The Volvo Ocean Race, which is some crazy long nautical race, is stopping over in Boston. Dates for the stopover are April 25 - May 16 at Fan Pier.

The Volvo Ocean Race is one of the world’s most formidable extreme global nautical adventures with a storied past, filled with remarkable accomplishments, immeasurable endurance challenges and the ultimate competition of man against the elements.

The race started on October 11, 2008 from Alicante, Spain and will take over nine months, cover nearly 37,000 nautical miles of the globe’s most treacherous seas, and stop in 11 ports around the world.

The Volvo Ocean Race is making only one stop in North America. Bringing all the excitement and spectacle of this worldwide event to Boston’s world-class waterfront destination, Fan Pier.

Should make for some pretty cool pictures.

Bobby Flay @ Sur La Table - 4/24

4/23/2009 12:05:00 AM 0 Responses
Bobby Flay is going to be at the Sur La Table in the Chestnut Hill Mall (199 Boylston Street) on Friday 4/24 to do a book signing at 1pm for his new book entitled "Burgers, Fries, and Shakes."

After a long day spent in one of his restaurants or taping a television show, what Bobby Flay craves more than anything else is … a crusty-on-the-outside, juicy-on-the-inside burger; a fistful of golden, crisp, salty fries; and a thick, icy milkshake. Given the grilling guru’s affinity for bold flavors and signature twists on American favorites, it’s no surprise that he has crafted the tastiest recipes ever for this ultimate food trio.

If it were Alton Brown, or Thomas Keller, or Nobu - I'd be there for sure. But honestly, I'm not a big fan of Bobby Flay - or at least his shows on Food Network. I don't think I've ever eaten at any of his restaurants - so I could just be judging a book by its tv shows.

1000 Words - Company Men Boston Common

4/23/2009 12:02:00 AM 1 Response
For those of you that follow my Twitter (here), ya'll know that The Company Men has a bunch of trailers set up on Charles St. between the Public Garden and Boston Common. I got drenched yesterday afternoon walking over there to take a couple pics.

Anyone know who's playing the characters of "Sally Wilcox" or "John W"? I would have taken more pictures except I was deathly afraid of my camera getting wet and breaking.

Also, thanks to the many readers that emailed me to let me know that they're filming in the Common as well as the Financial District. If any of ya'll have pics that you'd like posted up here, feel free to email them to me and I'll get them up.

33 Launches $3 Bar Menu - 4/22

4/23/2009 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
I have a few places that I like to go for cheap "happy hour" bar food. At the top of the list is McCormick & Schmicks because they do happy hour not just right after work but also from 10pm to midnight'ish - and you can get a burger and fries for like $3. My next favorite is the mini kobe burgers at Minibar for $2. Less variety there since you only have one option, but those things are delicious.

Well, it looks like 33 is jumping on the bandwagon as well and launched a new bar menu yesterday.

Available Wednesday and Thursday, 5-7pm at the Bar & High Tops Friday and Saturday, 8-11pm in the Lounge.

33 Restaurant & Lounge welcomes guests new and old to check out the new 3 for $3 menu. The menu includes some the more popular items from 33’s award winning menu, such as three savory lamb chops, traditional sliders or a trio of Mediterranean dips... ALL FOR ONLY $3! This menu will be available Wednesdays-Saturdays in the bar and lounge. So take this opportunity to relax and sip one of 33’s exotic cocktails while sampling exceptional cuisine at an outstanding price!

Here's the menu:

3 for $3
traditional sliders
grilled lamb chops w/ foundu dip
jumbo shrimp w/ cocktail sauce
cape cod oysters and 3 sauces
tomato, basil, mozzarella stacks
crostini – olive, mushroom and caprese
dips w/pita – baba ganoush, hummus and tzatziki

$3 Sides
basket of fries
mac & cheese
caesar salad
side salad

Looks good to me. I'm thinking the next time we hang out at DanDan's place we swing by 33 and get some grub.

Locke Ober and Sportello in Saveur Mag

4/23/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
You guys will not believe the stack of newspaper/magazine clippings and bookmarked webpages that I have laying around for blog entries. There's just too much going on in this city. Better get to it.

The April issue of food magazine Saveur has two different articles that feature Boston restaraurants Locke Ober and Sportello. Locke Ober is on p.32 under a list of "9 Signature Dishes" for their Lobster Savannah

3. Lobster Savannah (Locke-Ober, Boston, Massachusetts; circa 1930) Though it originated down South, lobster Savannah has been inextricably associated with the Yankee restaurant Locke-Ober since the Great Depression. A mix of lobster, mushrooms, pimentos, sherry, b├ęchamel, and parmesan that's baked in the lobster's shell, the dish is similar to other extravagant classics like lobster thermidor and lobster newburg. When Lydia Shire took over at Locke-Ober, in 2001, she introduced a lighter sauce and replaced the pimentos with fresh red bell peppers.

And Sportello is featured in an article entitled "12 Restaurants that Matter"

Sportello focuses laserlike on what made Lynch a phenomenon and an inspiration, namely, pastas of a delicacy and subtlety of flavor that no Irish girl has any business knowing how to make: pillowy, creamy potato gnocchi with peas and mushrooms that define spring; strozzapreti with braised rabbit, an ingredient she has long championed; ricotta ravioli with nutmeg, brown butter, and parmigiano-reggiano. End with the homemade tiramis├╣; for all her hard-won expertise, Lynch hasn't lost her Bostonian sweet tooth or the loyalty to her roots that has allowed her to remain a local hero while she's made herself a national star.

I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't eaten at either place yet. I've had drinks at Locke Ober and I've had drinks at Drink (which is right below Sportello). But I will try to make it there soon. Probably to Sportello before Locke Ober because I <3 Barbara Lynch.

Christian Bale Maybe Coming to Boston?

4/22/2009 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
This is just speculation on my part, but based on a little Herald blurb, we might see Christian Bale coming to Boston to film a movie called "The Prisoners" along with Mark Wahlberg.

That the word in Hollywood is that “Batman” biggie Christian Bale is this close to joining Mark Wahlberg in “The Prisoners,” the flick-in-development written by Brockton homey Aaron Guzikowski . As we told you yesterday, the script is about a Boston father who goes all vigilante when his daughter is kidnapped.

First off, script written by someone in Brockton. That's a good sign. Then secondly, the script is about a "Boston father." I'm hoping that means the movie takes place in Boston for at least part of the movie - if not all of it.

Ok, I did some digging, here's an excerpt from a Hollywood blog that has more about the script:

Here's the basic idea: After his 6-year-old daughter and her friend are kidnapped, a small-town carpenter butts heads with a young, brash detective in charge of the investigation. The father is a Bible-reading, deer-hunting survivalist. The cop, meanwhile, can’t wait to get to the city. Feeling failed by the law, the father captures the man he believes responsible and begins to torture him in a desperate attempt to find out what he did with the girls, whom he’s convinced are still alive.

UFC/MMA Coming to Massachusetts?

4/22/2009 12:01:00 AM 3 Responses
I used to be a much bigger UFC fan than I am now. Here's what happened. Basically, I'm too cheap to pay for UFC pay per view matches, so I used to watch them at the Hooters in North Station. That Hooters closed, thus I stopped watching UFC.

The Public Safety Committee heard a bill filed by Sen. James Timilty, D-Walpole, that would expand jurisdiction of the state's boxing commission to include mixed martial arts and require events be licensed by the commission.

Officials from the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the largest professional association for mixed martial arts, said economic activity generated from fights would bring in $12.3 million.

Last year, we tried to get tickets when UFC went to Montreal, but tickets sold out in seconds. It was nuts. It would be awesome if we could go to matches at the TD Garden in the near future.

Filene's Basement for Sale

4/21/2009 12:03:00 AM 0 Responses
Uh oh, looks like closing 11 stores didn't help (here). Filene's Basment is in some serious trouble, to the point where they've now put themselves up for sale.

Since deciding to close 11 stores earlier this year, Filene's Basement's performance "has continued to deteriorate significantly since that time," according to the regulatory filing by Retail Ventures Inc., the merchant's parent company. Attempts to renegotiate leases for the remaining 25 stores, the corporate office in Burlington, and the company's warehouse, "is not likely to lead to sustainable operations for Filene's Basement,"
Retail Ventures said in the filing.

As a result of these developments, Filene's Basement will be put up for sale and listed as a discontinued operation for Retail Ventures.

Not a good sign when they say things aren't "likely to lead to sustainable operations." Hopefully some retail smartypants can buy them and turn things around. Probably close more stores, only focus on the profitable ones and rebuild from the ground up.

Red Mango Coming To Boston

This is huge news for you frozen yogurt fans. Personally, I prefer Red Mango over Pinkberry - so I'm psyched that they're coming here first.

Red Mango, a California-based chain of nonfat frozen yogurt stores, said it has signed development deals with existing and new franchisees will result in the opening of new Red Mango stores, including one in Boston.

Red Mango added that Sean Kim and Kalin Bae, of SEKA LLC, will open the first Boston store for Red Mango later this summer. Kim and Bae first heard of Red Mango through a friend in South Korea, the chain said; both are certified jewelers, and Kim has managed eight jewelry stores in the Boston area for his family.

I haven't read anything yet about where this Red Mango will be, but I can already tell you that it's going to be packed with college students and other FroYo enthusiasts.

The Company Men Filmed on Fort Hill

4/20/2009 12:29:00 AM 1 Response
According to a recent Globe blurb, The Company Men has been filming on Fort Hill in Roxbury at the Hodgdon House.

It was 50 degrees and sunny in Boston yesterday, but on Roxbury's historic Fort Hill, it was snowing. Crews with "The Company Men" - a John Wells film about corporate downsizing starring Ben Affleck, Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, and Kevin Costner - spent much of the day making fake snow for a winter scene at an old house on Highland Street.

Word is the producers liked the haunted look of the house so much, they've agreed to foot the bill for at least some of the structure's much-needed repairs. (Known as the Hodgdon House, the abode was built in the 1860s and is the last significant home constructed during the era of the "Fort Hill" development.)

I did some googling but I couldn't find an address for a Hodgdon House on Highland Street in Roxbury. Anyone from that area know what the approximate address or cross streets are?

Lowell Village Smokehouse Deals

4/17/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
This is for the folks out there with cars, or friends with cars. As most of you know from reading my "About Me" page, I'm from Texas. Part of being from Texas means I love BBQ. One of my very first posts back in 2007 was a review of a restaurant called the Village Smokehouse (here). Then, they opened a 2nd location in Lowell (here). Now that 2nd location is offering some pretty great deals:

Student Aid Program
Understanding that students are facing the same, if not greater, economic challenges as the rest of us, the Village Smokehouse has designed a program specifically for them. On Sunday through Wednesday, students can receive 20% off their food bill, simply by showing their college ID. . This program is good for all students through June 1, 2009. Members of the staff and faculty at Middlesex Community College and the University of Lowell are also invited to take advantage of the special discount.*

25 Cent Buffalo Wings
It doesn't get better than this. On Sunday through Wednesday, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m., the Village Smokehouse will offer 25 cent Buffalo Wings. Order as many as you like and pay only 25 cents per wing. It’s almost giving them away!

Free Live Music – No Cover Charge
The Village Smokehouse continues to offer live music every Thursday with no cover charge. The series showcases regional folk, rock and blues acts. Upcoming shows include Jeremy Lyons on April 16, Gregg Miller Group on April 23 and Jen Kearny on April 30. Music begins each Thursday at 9 p.m.

I want me some WINNNNGGGSSS!!!

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day - 4/21

4/17/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
This happens once a year right? Or is it twice? I can't remember for sure and I'm too lazy to look it up, but what I do know is that this upcoming Tuesday, the line is going to be OUT THE DOOR at all the Ben & Jerry's locations around here.

Tuesday, April 21st is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry’s, and you know what that means... free ice cream for you! As a way to thank our customers for their support and to celebrate 31 years of scooping the chunkiest, funkiest ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbet, Ben & Jerry’s scoop shops are happily giving it away!

Maybe it’s time for you to try a new flavor that you’ve been wondering about without commiting your hard earned dollars or it’s time for you to enjoy an old favorite and savor in the deliciousness that is free ice cream? Hey, either way it’s time for you to come on in!

I guess my diet can wait a day. Or I could try to combine the two and do a try to walk off the ice cream inbetween Ben & Jerry visits. Let's see, there's one at the Park Plaza, one on Newbury, and I think one in the Prudential. And probably one in Cambridge somewhere. Yum ... ice cream.

Groupon Boston - Discount Deals

4/16/2009 12:02:00 AM 0 Responses
I got an email from the folks at Groupon letting me know about their new Boston-centric site. Seems like a pretty cool idea. It's like woot.com but for Boston deals.

Groupon is a deal-a-day website for Boston. We launched in Chicago in November 2008 and Boston in March 2009, with plans to expand to more major cities very soon. We've caught on quickly with consumers and business alike and offer a win-win situation for both.

It looks like the way it works is that a discount is offered in the instance that enough folks sign up to make the group purchase.

The deal I missed out on seeing (because I'm slow at reading through my emails) was a half priced one-month community boating membership. The deal that's on the site as I'm writing this post is 24 classes for $19 at Healthworks which sounds like an awesome deal. Unfortunately, that pesky Y chromosome of mine prevents me from taking advantage of that particular deal.

The New ArtsBoston Site Rocks

4/16/2009 12:02:00 AM 1 Response
I got invited this week to the ArtsBoston office to participate in a blogger brainstorm session for their new site, and I have to tell you, it's pretty awesome. When I'm looking for a deal on food, I go to HubEats (here) and now when I'm looking for info on any sort of cultural, musical, theater, etc event I'm going to be heading to the ArtsBoston site.

You probably already know ArtsBoston for our BosTix 1/2 price ticketing programs (both online and at the BosTix booths in Copley Square and at Fanueil Hall). The 1/2 price ticketing programs will continue at http://www.bostix.org and we’re also launching a new artsboston.org web site which will be a comprehensive online calendar for theatre, music, film, dance, and visual arts for Greater Boston.

There's so much information on that website, no description from me can really do it justice. You'll need to just check it out for yourself. But here's a few of my favorite aspects.

1. The "Free" tab. Cause you're paying enough in rent, tuition, or other bills. Getting something for free would be a nice change of pace.

2. The "Plan Your Experience" tab. Cause sometimes you just need some help planning your event. Personally, I'm going to start attending all the "Girls Night Out" event suggestions to meet some ladies. Just kidding. Maybe.

3. The "Search Events By Date" function. Cause you want to know what's going down on a particular day.

Click (here) to check out the ArtsBoston site yourself.

PS. Shout out to Kerry from Bostonist (here). It was nice to meet you.

Tory Row Replaces Greenhouse

4/16/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
It's been roughly 11 months since I blogged about the closing/renovations going on at the old Greenhouse Coffee Shop in Harvard Square (here). I used to love going there for their sandwiches and their fish and chips. Their desserts were awful though ... but I digress. According to Thrillist, the new restaurant that occupies that space as opened. Say hello to Tory Row:

Just opened this week by the dudes behind capital-letter-eschewing middlesex and audubon circle, Tory Row (named for the Brattle St mansions that used to house rich fellows loyal to England) completely revamped the old Greenhouse Cafe space turning it into a communal European-styled cafe w/ exposed brick, glossy teak veneer wall panels, a 10-seat L-shaped bar and share tables made of fireslate, and Shepard Fairey wall art ripped (w/ his permission) from a building outside the spot.

A couple of my friends have lunch in Harvard Sq every Monday. I wonder if they can be swayed to try out Tory Row with me next week.

Click (here) for the Tory Row site (still under construction)
