Tom Brady & Gisele Married???

2/27/2009 02:27:00 AM 1 Response
Its wayyyyyyy past my bedtime, but my friend Gwen (who was also up way past her bedtime) alerted me to the fact that US Magazine is now reporting that Tom Brady and Gisele are married. I took a screenshot just so you guys won't think I'm crazy if by morning time, the story changes to "Tom and Gisele are Married .... PSYCH".

Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady wed today at the St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica, Calif., Usmagazine.com confirms.

The ceremony -- which began at dusk -- was "very small and intimate," a source tells Us, adding that guests mostly consisted of immediate family. Brady's son with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan, John Edward Thomas Moynahan, was also present.

Ok then, well I guess congrats to the happy couple. Was there ever an engagement? Or did they just up and get married?

re(Define)(Real)ity Runway Show - 3/2

2/27/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Well it looks like today is just chock full of fashion events. Must be the whole "Spring is almost here" thing that's got everyone excited. This particular fashion show focuses on jeans.

I once went shopping with a couple of my friends margdau and hln and one of them remarked about how it's impossible for women to find jeans that fit perfectly, so when you find a pair that does - you have to buy them no matter how much they cost.

Little in the Middle Jeans, in conjunction with The Alliance for Eating Disorder Awareness, 5s Public Relations and Revolution Rock Bar, will host the “re (Define) (Real)ity” ™ Runway Show-Boston on Monday, March 2 to commemorate the re-launch of Little in the Middle and kickoff Shecky’s Girl’s Night Out- Boston.

Immediately following the show, guests can shop the custom “Denim Bar”, where national retailer TrueJeans.com will use their exclusive technology to help find the perfect fitting pair of jeans.

My solution to the whole 'jeans fitting properly' problem? All my jeans are about a size too big. I know it makes me look foolish, but I actually use my pockets. When pants fit, you can't put anything in your pockets. You girls know what I'm talking about.

WHO: Little in the Middle Jeans & The Alliance for Eating Disorder Awareness
WHAT: re(Define) (Real)ity ™ Runway Show
WHERE: Revolution Rock Bar
WHEN: Monday, March 2. 7-9pm

Andy Samberg @ Newbury Comics Tonight! - 2/27

2/27/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Andy Samberg and the folks of The Lonely Island are going to be doing an autograph signing session tonight at the Newbury Comics in Faneuil Hall at 7pm. You can thank Bloggery reader Sarah for the tip. I haven't listened to a comic album since my middle school days listening to old school Adam Sandler. The new Lonely Island cd should be pretty hilarious.

Samberg hopes to have a similar effect on people with this month's release of "Incredibad," a new CD/DVD he released with his writing partners Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, childhood friends collectively known as the Lonely Island. While the Lonely Island may not be a household name, the clips the group has produced for "Saturday Night Live" have become viral sensations, like " ... in my Pants" and " ... in a Box," which featured a memorable appearance by Justin Timberlake.

The new CD/DVD features their greatest hits as well as new collaborations with top stars like Jack Black, Norah Jones, and Julian Casablancas of the Strokes.

I love the SNL digital shorts. The one with Natalie Portman rapping, I'm on a Boat, Lazy Sunday. I have half a mind to go on hulu right now and rewatch all of them.

Mr. Belding @ McFadden's Friday - 2/27

2/26/2009 12:01:00 AM 3 Responses
The folks at McFadden's must have watched the same tv shows as kids that I did. Remember when Topanga was here (here)? Unfortunately, I was out of town, but I believe a few of my friends went to go catch a glimpse of her. I'm not sure I or any of my friends are willing to give up our Friday night to try to meet Mr. Belding. Maybe if it was Kelly Kapowski, I'd consider it.

Join McFadden's Boston and Barstool Sports for Mardi Gras 2009 on Friday, February 27th from 8pm-Close. Hosted by the King of Carnival- Mr. Belding from Saved by the Bell the night will feature a live mardi gras band ALL NIGHT, no line/cover until 10:00pm and a bead bonanza. To RSVP please email: mardigras@barstoolsports.com.

There you have it. Mr. Belding, beads, and I guess possibly boobs (since it's Mardi Gras)?

Maine Topless Coffee Shop Now Open

2/26/2009 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
Remember last month when I blogged about the possible opening of a topless coffee shop in Maine (here)? Well it looks like it's open now.

A topless coffee shop that raised the ire of many residents of a small central Maine town is open for business.

The Grand View Topless Coffee Shop, located at the site of the former Grand View Motel, opened its doors Monday on busy Route 3 in Vassalboro. A sign outside says, "Over 18 only." Another says, "No cameras, no touching, cash only."

On Tuesday, two men sipped coffee at a booth while three topless waitresses and a bare-chested waiter stood nearby. Topless waitress Susie Wiley said men, women and couples have stopped by.

A quick google search didn't uncover any website for the coffee shop. Maybe it's still in the works. I wonder if I'm curious enough to drive 3 hours from Boston just to check it out. Field trip anyone?

$1 Mini-Burgers at Match on Tuesdays

2/25/2009 12:01:00 AM 2 Responses
The recession is hitting restaurants pretty badly. The Globe had a "complete" list last month (here) but it's looking like more restaurants in the area are joining the mix. The latest to join in is Match in Back Bay which has a new Tuesday & Thursday promo starting today.

Starting next Tuesday, February 24, 2009 Match Burgers & Martinis will introduce its own exclusive Stimulus Package. Every Tuesday night from 5-10pm Match’s Mini-Burger will be priced at $1.00 and every Thursday night, Ladies can order any entrée for only $5.00.

I can still remember when Match used to be the Blue Cat Cafe not so long ago. I think I went to Match just after it opened. I remember that the food was good but the company was awful. I was having dinner with a bunch of Harvard Medical Students and all they could talk about was the "interesting" (aka "most disgusting") cases that they'd come across during rotations.

Oh, and the waitresses were wearing very provocative white dresses. I wonder if they still do that. Field trip next Tuesday anyone?

Thanks to everyone who entered the contest for tickets to the Shecky's Girls Night Out event in early March. I think this contest had the most entrants thus far. Sadly, only five folks could win, and here are the winners.

Susan F.
Cate M.
Amy B.
Melissa C.
Joy Z.

Congrats to the winners - remember each winner gets 2 tickets to the event. Here's the info on the event. Winners will be contacted directly by someone at Shecky's on how to pick up their tickets.

Date: Tue.-Thu., Mar. 3rd-5th, 2009
Time: 5pm-10pm
Place: Boston Center for the Arts - Cyclorama
539 Tremont St. (Clarendon & Berkeley Sts.)

You can still purchase tix if you didn't win (here)

PS. I'm still deliberating whether or not to go so that I can provide event coverage. I watched the video on the Shecky's site and it looks like it's pretty much all women there. If you see an Asian guy wandering around looking uncomfortable and taking photos - that'd be me - stop and say hi.

How Long Does It Take To Shave Legs?

2/24/2009 12:01:00 AM 3 Responses
My friend Rachael over at Kiehl's thought you ladies might want to enter a contest that they're currently running to win a year's supply of shave cream from Kiehl's. And for those of you who are trivia buffs, Svetlana Pankratova has the longest legs in the world.

With 4 feet, 4 inch legs, Svetlana needs to take extra care when shaving, and she’s chosen Kiehl’s “Close Shaverettes” Simply Mahvelous Legs Shave Cream to smooth and nourish every inch of her legs. Through March 15, customers in our free-standing stores and on Kiehls.com can guess exactly how long it takes Svetlana to shave her legs, down to the second. There will be one winner per store, and one winner from Kiehls.com. The customer in each of our free-standing stores and Kiehls.com who comes closest to the exact answer, above or below, will win a full year of “Close Shaverettes” Simply Mahvelous Legs Shave Cream.

I can't even begin to guess how long it takes to shave one's legs. My friend Jon may know. I think he said he had to do it for biking and/or swimming ... or maybe he was just saying that.

If you haven't used Kiehl's products. They're great. I use a lot of their products, but not their leg shaving cream.

Serial Buddies Filming in June

2/24/2009 12:01:00 AM 3 Responses
I had seen a couple snippets about this before, but can't seem to find anything substantial yet. Anyone have any info an production for a movie called Serial Buddies? It's being produced by Maria Menounos and Kevin Undergaro. Here's the most recent thing I've come across.

Also in the Liberty crowd was Menounos’ business partner, Kevin Undergaro, who told us he was in town scouting for a flick called “Serial Buddies,” the first “serial-killer buddy movie.” Filming will begin in June.

A comedy about serial killer buddies ... interesting concept. I wonder which stars they're going to get to be in it?

I believe they were supposed to be doing some filming at Sonsie. Was that the restaurant they were in when Jennifer Garner calls Matthew McConaughey a gay pirate? I can't tell.

BSO's '09-'10 Season & New Album Releases

2/23/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
I got to go to my very first press conference last week - I was very excited. I went to the dress rehearsal in the morning and then the BSO press conference afterwards. They had two big announcements for us. First, the '09-'10 BSO lineup was announced - it's going to be amazing. Keep an eye out for tickets to opening night - I will fight you for tickets to that show. There's going to be a world premiere of a new John Williams piece called "On Willows and Birches" and Evgeny Kissin is going to be there to perform a Chopin concerto.

Also, later in the season the BSO will be doing a Beethoven symphony cycle and play through all of his symphonies. Who doesn't like Beethoven? The second announcement was that there are now 4 new recordings from the BSO available to purchase.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra releases its first major recordings with Music Director James Levine—Ravel's complete Daphnis and Chloé, Brahms's A German Requiem, Mahler's Symphony No. 6, William Bolcom's Eighth Symphony, and Bolcom's Lyric Concerto for flute and orchestra—available on the orchestra's own BSO Classics label through its website at bso.org.

We listened to a few excerpts at the conference while James Levine talked us through why he chose these particular pieces. They sound amazing. Two are being released as digital downloads and two are on CD. I got all four of them.

For those of you that haven't had a chance to swing by the Symphony yet this season, you can still get $20 tix (if you're under 40 years old) through the promotion I blogged about earlier (here).

Prisoners in MA Have TVs?

2/23/2009 12:01:00 AM 3 Responses
I'm a fairly law-abiding citizen - I even cut down on my speeding after I got my first (and only) speeding ticket 5 years ago (knock on wood). So, I have no idea what it's like in prison, nor do I ever want to find out. But I saw this the other day while reading through my RSS feeds and was a little disturbed. Prisoners have tv?

Q. I am a Massachusetts prisoner who currently receives analog broadcasts, and I would like to use/receive the $40 government coupon for a digital converter box. I had a family member log on to the government website (www.dtv2009.gov) and attempt to sign me up for the $40 coupon. A message was presented stating that I was not eligible for the program because the address provided was a business address, and that businesses and group living quarters are not eligible for the program. - Anonymous

A. The good news is you can keep using rabbit ears to watch until June 12, after Congress agreed to the president's request to delay the transition. The bad news is the coupons are limited to households and those who live in nursing homes or other senior care facilities. Despite objections from some prison officials, who like the idea of having prisoners distracted by watching TV, the program continues to exclude some institutions.

This just seems wrong to me. But I'm sure someone out there will disagree with me. First, it sounds like this person has his/her own personal tv while in prison. Second he/she wants our federal tax dollars to subsidize his/her digital converter box.

Boston Globe Travel Show - 2/20

2/19/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
I'm a big fan of travel. Unfortunately, vacation days are few and far between once you enter the workforce. But even still, each year with the 2 weeks of vacation that I had - I'd spend one week back in TX visiting my folks and the other week I'd spend somewhere tropical. My favorite so far? The Cayman Islands. Anyhoo, coming up later this week is the Boston Globe Travel Show.

More than just a show, The Boston Globe Travel Show is a total travel experience. The three-day event features a diverse set of travel exhibitors and suppliers, representing every segment of the travel industry and offers detailed information on trips to every region of the world. Travel experts including Arthur and Pauline Frommer and Patricia Schultz will offer seminars and up-to-the-minute travel advice.

The Travel Show will be open to the public on Friday, February 20 from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.; Saturday, February 21, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.; and on Sunday, February 22 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tickets for the show are $10 and are available at the show or in advance at www.bostonglobetravelshow.com. Children 18 and under are admitted free of charge.

I've heard that cruises can be had at bargain prices right now since everyone's trying to save money and abstaining from travel. I wonder if I could get a good deal on a trip to Europe there? I haven't had a chance to go anywhere in Europe yet.

1000 Words - Gisele Does True Religion

I think it was earlier this month that I read about Gisele signing up for a new campaign to model for True Religion, but didn't remember to look up the actual pictures until just now. Here they are:
If you recall, they opened up a True Religion store on Newbury during the summer of last year (here). I suppose you can pick up a pair of those teeny tiny jean shorts come Spring/Summer '09 (I think that's the collection these are for). I wonder if that's the length they come in, or if you're supposed to just get regular jeans and cut them as high up as you dare?

I should stop holding contests - because I actually feel bad when lots of folks enter and I can only choose one winner. A lot of folks send me these long heartfelt emails and unfortunately I can't do anything. To be fair, everyone's name goes in a hat (a fedora to be exact) and I draw one at random.

Anyhoo, I'm going to do the next best thing. I'm going to post another giveaway. As one contest ends, another one shall begin (until I run out of stuff to giveaway). This one's for the ladies - or possibly guys that want to score points with the ladies.

Remember when I posted about Shecky's Girls Night Out (here)? Well, I have 10 Famous Goodie Bag Tickets to give away to 5 winners (2 FBG tickets each).

Here are the rules (This was one of the suggestions from the HOB contest). Email me with the subject heading "Shecky's" and in the body of the email send me the name of your favorite bar in Boston and why it's your favorite. New Adam Sandler Movie Filming in May

2/17/2009 12:01:00 AM 22 Responses
I just watched the Wedding Singer again this past weekend for probably the 100th time (it was on TBS or TNT again). I'm a fan of Adam Sandler, I remember watching him on SNL while growing up, and also a friend of mine had a few of his "albums" which we'd listen to all the time.

According to the Globe, Adam Sandler and a huge crew of other folks will be in town in May to film a new comedy.

New Hampshire native Adam Sandler (above) and a promising cast of cut-ups that includes David Spade, Chris Rock, and Kevin James, are on their way to Boston to shoot a goofy new comedy. To be directed by Dennis Dugan, who's been behind the camera for a string of Sandler films, including "You Don't Mess With the Zohan," "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry," and "Happy Gilmore," the new, still-untitled movie is about a group of guys who return to the town where they grew up. (Sounds a little like Lawrence Kasdan's "The Big Chill," but, hopefully, funnier.) We're told the cast also includes Rob Schneider, Steve Buscemi, and Norm MacDonald. The female leads haven't been set yet, but Salma Hayek's name has been mentioned as a possibility. Dugan was scouting locations here last week, and went to the Celtics-Lakers game with the film's production designer and the screenwriter Fred Wolf, whose credits include the comedies "Joe Dirt" and "Black Sheep." (They're all Lakers fans, so they were pleased with the outcome of the game.) The shoot is expected to start in May and last 66 days, which is longer than some other recent made-in-Massachusetts comedies.

If they do get Salma Hayek, it'll be just about a year since her last visit to Boston (that I know of) - she was here to christen a boat last May (here).

Click (here) to read the Globe blurb.

UPDATE 3/17/09: Movie will be filmed in Essex (here).

UPDATE 3/23/09: Salma Hayek and others join the cast (here).

UPDATE 3/31/09: Filming in Centennial Grove (here).

Walmart Grocery Stores Coming to MA

2/17/2009 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
Have you been in a Walmart lately? Living downtown, it's a little tough to get to one. The only one I know of is the one on Route 9 just past the Natick Mall. I was there in early January and it's pretty amazing how cheap they can sell their products there. During times like these, I can see why Walmart and McDonald's are the only ones still holding strong. Although, I've found that McDonald's really isn't that cheap anymore.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the nation's largest grocer, is making an aggressive push across Massachusetts to double its supermarket business over the next year. The effort to woo more bargain-conscious Bay Staters includes the construction of a new supercenter in Worcester and the addition of markets to stores in Halifax, Hudson, Oxford, Salem, Springfield, and Swansea. A grocery addition already under construction at Wal-Mart's North Attleborough location is expected to be completed this fall.

I guess that's good news for the folks living in the suburbs, but it won't really help anyone living downtown. I guess I'll just have to stick with my bimonthly Costco runs. That being said, Downtown Crossing could really use a grocery store. I wish someone would take that old Barnes & Nobles that closed down a few years ago and turn it into a small grocery store. That'd be awesome.

What's It Like to Fly on Virgin?

2/17/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
The Globe has a nice article that talks at length about all the amenities available on the new Virgin America flights from Boston to SF and LA and also mentions that they're priced to give folks like Jetblue a run for their money. Yay for competition driving prices down.

The purple ceiling lights evoke a lounge atmosphere. Music videos and video games fill touch-screen monitors built into seatbacks. Hand-held keyboards can be pulled out of armrests to send instant messages to other passengers. And trance music mixed by Paris DJs is piped into restrooms.

The Burlingame, Calif.-based carrier's fares out of Boston will start at $149 one way - undercutting the market by $15 to $40 each way, although competitors sometimes match prices.

The seats also have electrical sockets for your laptop and wireless will be available on the planes as well (for a charge). Sounds pretty great to me. The last time I flew US Airways, they charged $2 for a coke. It's nice to see someone come in with some amenities. Especially since oil prices are back down now. Can we have our beverages back?

PS. How did they know I like to pee to the sounds of French techno music? Oooh Lala...

The Globe Pays for Your Blind Date

2/16/2009 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
Win, win situation for those of you that are adventurous daters. I'm pretty sure my friend Eric will be applying for this after he reads about it. Just last week he asked me to join some site called CrazyBlindDate with him.

I couldn't find an end date on this, so I'm assuming it's still going on.

Want to enjoy a meal on us and maybe meet the man or woman of your dreams? Let the Boston Globe Magazine play matchmaker. We’re looking for adult applicants of all sexual preferences for Dinner With Cupid, a column that will match two singles up for a blind date and feature details of their evening out together, from their first impression to their first course. Of course we hope that sparks fly, but we’ll write about the date even when things don’t go so hot.

Click (here) to apply.

PS. To reader Carrie who sent this to me. I tried to reply to your email but it bounced back. Send me another email if you have any questions.

Update: This from reader Jason:

Just fyi, but I sent in my stuff for the blind date. The link is fine, but they say to email your pic to them. Well I copied and pasted twice, and the email address is wrong or they discontinued it.

I'm not sure what the deal is but the Globe seems to have dropped the ball on this one. The email I got notifying me of the event supposedly came from an intern there (but I wasn't able to reply back - the email bounced) and then now the email to apply for the blind date doesn't seem to work either. Anyone have any insight to what's going on?

Absinthe Tasting at Mortons - 2/19

2/16/2009 12:01:00 AM 4 Responses
I get lots of emails about various tastings at Morton's that they're holding, and usually I'm not that interested in them, but this one is different. I've never had absinthe and would like to try it sometime. From the reading that I've done, I understand that this 'new' absinthe that they're bringing into the US nowadays doesn't have wormwood in it so it's safer and won't cause us to cut off an ear.

Aren't you supposed to pour it over a sugar cube and slotted spoon? And isn't there something about it changing colors? Clearly, I haven't done my absinthe background research.

The tasting is going to be held at the Morton's in Back Bay on Thursday, February 19, 2009 from 6pm to 7:30pm. Cost is $45 per guest.

CW's Casting Call - Martha's Vineyard Show

2/16/2009 12:01:00 AM 9 Responses
I can't seem to find a deadline on this thing, but there's a webform up right now to apply to be on a new "docu-soap" that is going to be filmed on Martha's Vineyard. I've been to Martha's Vineyard twice. Once for a client's Kentucky Derby party and once when my family visited me in Boston. If you've got your summer free and are looking for your 15 minutes of fame, this one's for you.

The CW Network in association with 25/7 Productions and Doron ofir Casting is currently seeking groups of friends who are available to spend the summer on Martha's Vineyard for a groundbreaking Docu-Soap. Year-round locals of the vineyard, returning summer revelers and first time visitors between the ages of 19 and 28 are encouraged to apply.

I was actually tempted to apply at first - although I'm getting pretty close to the upper bound on their age requirements. But then I read it more closely and it says 'groups of friends'. Seeing as how the majority of my friends are no longer students and don't have the summers off, I don't see how this would be possible. I don't know if I could actually swing a "summer off" either, but my friend Tim was on a reality tv show a couple years back and it looks like it would be a fun experience.

Win Tix To The House of Blues Grand Opening!

2/13/2009 12:09:00 AM 1 Response
You know what's funny? I actually feel guilty when I miss a day of blogging. Sorry about that, but I had a little too much wine at the Virgin America party and was in no condition to be blogging that evening when I got home. But I'm going to make it up to you - with the best giveaway I've had on this blog so far.

As many of you will recall, there is an auction to purchase tickets to the Grand Opening (here). It's ending today, so for those of you who want a guaranteed spot - get your tickets now. Who's performing? Glad you asked.

The Blues Brothers Formal Classic Revue with Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi and others will perform along with a tribute to Jimi Hendrix by a band formed by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and a performance by Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters.

I have a pair of tickets to the Grand Opening event for one lucky winner.

Here are the rules - simple as usual. Email me with "House of Blues" in the subject heading and then in the body of the email - send me a suggestion on what sort of hoops I should make entrants jump through for the next giveaway. And to sweeten the pot, if you have Facebook and you join my Facebook group called "I Read the Beantown Bloggery" (link is at the top of this page) - I'll put your name in the hat twice.

Oh, and the contest ends on Tuesday 2/17 @ 11:59pm. The winner will be notified and an announcement made on Wednesday. Good Luck!

Stars on the Terrace @ The Intercontinental

2/13/2009 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
So Wednesday was the Virgin America Launch Party and last night was the Stars on the Terrace event at the Hotel Intercontinental. Many thanks to Liz for the invitation. I had a lovely time. Open bar, hand-rolled cigars, great hors d’oeuvres and remarkably exceptional company. Shout out to all the folks I met last night (too many to name), ya'll were awesome.

Sadly, I chose to cab it to the cash bar event yesterday (Virgin) and drive to the open bar event last night at the Intercontinental. But then again, I am supposed to be on a diet right now so it's probably better that I only had a couple of drinks.

The Intercontinental was already my favorite hotel bar to drink at. The Liberty Hotel was a close second. But after last night, it's the Intercontinental all the way.

Virgin America Launch Party

2/13/2009 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
It has been a VERY eventful week. I got an invitation to go to the Virgin America Launch Party on Wednesday and it was quite the affair. For most of the evening, folks took over the 4th and 5th floor of the Liberty Hotel and partied like rockstars. I got to meet Sir Richard Branson (Virgin), and Maria Menounos (Access Hollywood). I also met four Patriots cheerleaders and had a very pleasant conversation with Dinna Yap. Made me a tad embarrassed when I remembered that I had actually blogged about her before (here).

Great night. My only gripe is that it would have been nice if they had sprung for an open bar. Those glasses of wine were pricey. But that didn't stop me from having one or two too many.

Starting yesterday, Virgin America now flies between Boston & SF and Boston and LA. Methinks it's a good time to visit my sister out in SF again.
