Interview with Keith Lockhart

5/05/2009 12:47:00 AM
I got to interview Keith Lockhart - conductor of the Boston Pops - today in honor of opening night which is coming up tomorrow. I was pretty nervous cause it was my first interview ever (if you read this blog, you know I'm no journalist) but he was very laid back, easy to talk to, and the interview went quite well. Here's a look at what we talked about:

Feelings on this upcoming season?

It's the 124th season of the Boston Pops and Keith's 15th season. Each year it gets better and better. Opening night is emblematic of seven weeks of constant music. Their mission is to present as many types of music as possible: jazz, pops, broadway, classical, etc.

Any favorite event this season?

All the events are equally as good, but the performances with John Pizzarelli (jazz guitarist) have special meaning to him because John was one of the first people he worked with when he came to Boston.

Anything special planned for July 4th?

There are definitely some surprises planned for this year. He can't talk about it now, but they've got something really special in the works. This year in particular, due to the tough state of the economy, a big July 4th celebration will be something that we're all probably looking forward to.

I heard you've got a twitter account?

Keith has been working hard to evolve with the new technologies that have been emerging. He's got a twitter (here) as well as a facebook page (here).

What constitutes a great Boston day for you?

Boston is full of beautiful urban areas. Walking along the Esplanade or through the Public Garden when the weather is nice is a great way to enjoy Boston.

Any favorite restaurant/bar hangouts?

It's hard to choose a favorite, especially since he's good friends with many of the restauranteurs in Boston, but recently he's enjoyed hanging out at the new Bina Osteria (here) in Downtown Crossing.

As I said earlier, opening night is this upcoming Wednesday and it's going to be an awesome show. I recommend you guys check it out. Whew, interview #1 under my belt, who's next? Hopefully next time I won't lay in bed the night before - wide awake - praying that I don't make a fool of myself during the interview.

  1. Kevin Chevalier Said,

Nice job. Just remember, even if you do make a fool of yourself, you're the one who's writing it up.
