I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Herr once while I was a student at MIT. My friend Ragu and I started a biotechnology club there back in the day (yes, I am THAT big of a nerd) and Dr. Herr was kind enough to give a special talk during one of our events. I actually really wanted to try to get research position within his Biomechatronics lab, but turns out I was an awful engineer and a much better biologist.
Hugh Herr was a teenage mountain-climbing phenom when a blizzard took his legs. Now the MIT professor has used science to get them back, building artificial limbs so advanced, they force us to rethink what "able-bodied" means.
Like my title says - the article basically confirms that Hugh Herr is a badass. It's a feel-good inspirational story about being confronted by adversity and subsequently punching adversity in the face.
