This will be nice when it arrives, there are at least a half a dozen times that I was up late working - preparing for a meeting the next morning and ended up having to wander out in the middle of the night to find an ATM to withdraw cash because I was headed to the airport at 5am the next morning because I needed cash to pay for my cab ride to the airport.

The few times I've taken a cab in NYC (I usually prefer to walk) about half of them had machines in the back to take credit cards. Nice and convenient. And soon we'll have that in Boston as well.

Creative Mobile Technologies said it has signed an agreement with Boston Cab Dispatch that aims to put rear-seat, self-swipe credit card payment systems into many local cabs. In talking about Boston, Creative Mobile Technologies said its systems will allow local cabs to comply with a City of Boston mandate that requires that cabs provide rear-seat credit card acceptance capability later this year.

The company's press release described Boston Cab Dispatch as a "radio affiliation service with almost 500 member taxis comprising over 25 percent of the Boston taxi industry."

Interesting, from the sound of the article it sounds like all cabs will have to accept credit card sometime in 2009. Does anyone know what ever happened to the other mandate about switching cabs to hybrids over the next few years? Is that still in place or did it get shot down? All I know is after that hybrid mandate passed, I had many a conversation with an irate cab driver.
