Lobster Prices Back Up A Bit

1/09/2009 12:01:00 AM
I hope you got while the gettin was good. Lobster prices have been on the decline since the fall (here). It got to the point where lobstermen were only getting a couple bucks a pound for their catches and it wasn't even worth working anymore. Well according to yesterday's Globe, prices are back up a bit.

Lobster prices are rising after months in the tank. The price increase is a result of supply and demand, said Matt McAleney, a dealer in Portland. Lobstermen who were getting $2.25 to $2.80 a pound two weeks ago are getting $4 to $5.40, according to the Maine Lobstermen's Association.

That's a pretty significant increase over just a two week span. $4-$5 wholesale still doesn't sound too bad, though. Anyone know what the retail mark up is on lobster? 50%? 100%? Just curious as to what we're going to start seeing when we go grocery shopping.
