Boston Sports Players Salaries

1/26/2009 12:01:00 AM
Curious to know what some of our beloved Celtics and Patriots players make? Me too. I used to watch that Sweet 16 show on MTV just because I was curious to know what those parents did for a living that allowed them to spend six figures on a child's birthday party.

Garnett held the highest spot with a 2007-2008 season salary of nearly $24.8 million. Behind him was Pierce with a salary of about $18 million. And third was Allen with a salary of nearly $17.4 million.

Football wide receiver Randy Moss, who was traded to the New England Patriots last year, took the No. 4 spot with a salary worth just a little more than $14 million. The closest Patriots player behind Moss is quarterback Tom Brady at 12th with a salary of just over $8 million.

I didn't realize NBA salaries were so much higher than that of other sports. I did a quick google search of Red Sox salaries and those seem to top out at about $14 million as well.

  1. Dan Dan Said,

It's not that basketball player contracts are necessarily that much higher than those of other sports (although there are fewer players on a basketball team than on baseball or football so they will be a bit higher).

The reason for the sharp difference between the three teams' payrolls is that the Celtics have three maximum contract players. KG's contract is a remnant from before the last collective bargaining agreement limiting the maximum contracts, making him, in fact, the highest paid basketball player in the entire league. The other two players have the maximum allowed contracts under the collective bargaining agreement based on when they signed.

As a point of reference, the next highest paid Celtic is Kendrick Perkins at $4.2 million. Garnett makes about $3 million more per year than the next highest player in the NBA. And King Lebron James (and D Wade and Bosh) make the most possibly allowed to make since they've been in the league at $14.4 million each.

The highest contract on last year's Pistons, who played the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, was Rasheed Wallace with $13 million.
