12/31/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Thanks to Bloggery Reader Carrah for the note on a Bridget Moynahan sighting.

ironic with tom and giselle possible wedding news - spotted bridgette monihan at bristol lounge of fourseasons in back bay on christmas night - with mother, i presume. must be staying there if still filming in town?

I'm not sure if they're done shooting the pilot of Bunker Hill (here) yet but if they are - hopefully the series gets picked up and Ms. Moynahan will be back.

Again for those procrastinators, if you're looking to meet a celebrity, try checking if there's still tickets to the event at The Estate tonight. It's going to be hosted by Caridee English the winner of America's Next Top Model.

Regular tix are $75 and VIP tix are $100. Along with host Caridee English, there's going to be a lingerie fashion show. That undoubtedly means there will probably be a lot of dudes at this party.

Here's a little info about Caridee from wikipedia:

12/31/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Haven't made plans for tonight yet? Looking for something a little classier this year? The Boston Pops is having a New Years Eve Gala that perhaps you should check out.

On Wednesday, December 31, at 10 p.m., the Boston Pops will ring in the New Year with a gala New Year’s Eve celebration at Symphony Hall. Glitteringly adorned Symphony Hall will feature a dance floor where concertgoers can dance the night and year away and toast the arrival of 2009.

Eliza Dushku Was Here - 12/27

12/30/2008 12:01:00 AM 4 Responses
I remember first seeing Eliza Dushku in episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Oh and that chick flick Bring it On. Well the Globe got a picture of her this past weekend at The Estate and here's a little tidbit that I found interesting - Ms. Dushku is apparently from Watertown. I wonder if she was home for the holidays visiting relatives.

How does "Dollhouse" actress Eliza Dushku celebrate her birthday? She dances nonstop. The star of Joss Whedon's much-anticipated new show threw herself a 28th birthday bash at The Estate Saturday, and boogied in black leather pants all night long. The actress, who hails from Watertown originally, was surrounded by dozens of family and friends, including new beau Brent Bolthouse, the LA-based nightclub owner and impresario who's appeared on "The Hills." (Dushku formerly dated Dodgers pitcher Brad Penny, who may well wind up signing with the actress's beloved Red Sox. . . . Wouldn't that be interesting?) The crowd at Ed and Joe Kane's Back Bay club also included the Big Papi's better half, Tiffany Ortiz, "Fantastic Four" actor and former Gisele Bundchen boyfriend Chris Evans, Shag owner Sandy Poirier, and "On Broadway" actor and producer Lance Greene.

Well, welcome to Boston to Eliza Dushku and I hope you had a great time while you were here.

Trailer: The Proposal

12/30/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
The Proposal - the romantic comedy featuring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds - has had it's trailer released. I found it on Youtube this week. I'm guessing the scene where she's in her bosses office was the scene filmed at the State Street Bank. And I could swear that I saw a little bit of Rockport in the background when they go to "Alaska."

Some filming was also done in Gloucester, but I've never walked around Gloucester before (only driven through) so I can't identify any of the Gloucester scenes.

See the trailer below and see if you can identify some scenes. It's a fun little game I like to play with the movies that were filmed here.

More Martorano Movie Details

12/30/2008 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
So last week, there was rumor that a movie might be in the works based on the life of John Martorano - an associate of Whitey Bulger's Winter Hill Gang. The original blog post is (here) if you'd like to get the background. I wonder if it'll be sort of like American Gangster, where Denzel's character started out as a criminal, got caught, then cooperated with the feds. Anyhoo, rumor is Martin Scorsese might be the one directing it.

Now don’t breathe a word of this. Because nobody’s supposed to know. But word from the Left Coast is that the man behind the controversial John Martorano movie is none other than gangster-filmmaker extraordinaire Martin Scorsese!

We hear that Scorsese met secretly with the Winter Hill Gang hitman at an Italian restaurant in the Back Bay while “The Departed” director was in town making “Shutter Island.”

Then, according to our snitch, Marty had his longtime collaborator, producer Graham King, lock down the rights to Martorano’s life story. It is also likely that William Monahan, who wrote the screenplay for “The Departed,” which Scorsese directed and King produced, will write the Martorano script.

No complaints here, bring more movies to Boston. With the recent rumors about J Lo's upcoming divorce, I wonder if she's ever going to make it over here to film The Governess (here).

More Details on Tom and Gisele

12/29/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
After a bit more reading, I've stumbled upon another article about Tom and Gisele's possible engagement. The Globe isn't sure if it's real either. Here was the latest from the weekend (here) until now.

A source close to Brady also said yesterday he heard the engagement is a go. But if it's true, Tom Brady Sr. says he isn't in on the news. "We don't know a thing about it," Tom's dad told us yesterday. "Nobody told me. We talked to him and there's nothing to say. It's rumor, rumor, rumor. It must be a slow news day." Brady's agent, Don Yee, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

The blurb goes on to talk a bit about Tom's relationship with Bridget prior to getting together with Gisele a couple of years ago.

Faneuil Hall Market Lease Up For Grabs

12/29/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Recession, recession everywhere. Everyone is getting beat up, from individuals to huge corporations. As of last week, the company that holds the leases for three of the locations in Faneuil Hall Marketplace is in a wee bit of trouble.

General Growth Properties Inc., the second-largest US mall operator, is offering to sell the rights to operate Faneuil Hall, as well as two other well-known East Coast tourist destinations, South Street Seaport in Manhattan and Harborplace & the Gallery on Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace is one of Boston's top tourist attractions, and its sale will be closely watched by city officials, merchants, and rival operators. The marketplace consists of four buildings owned by the City of Boston, including the Quincy, North, and South markets. General Growth operates those three, and is selling its lease-hold interests at the marketplace The city itself owns and runs the fourth building, Faneuil Hall, a historic venue for some of the country's most prominent orators.

According to the article, they've got until February 12th to refinance $900 million in debt. No word on what the three buildings are priced at. It'll be interesting to see who steps up to the plate and what (if any) sort of changes the new owner makes.

Tom Brady and Gisele Might Be Engaged

12/28/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
The celebrity gossip sites these past couple of days have been buzzing with news that Tom Brady and Gisele got engaged on Christmas Eve. But apparently the Herald is saying that it might not be true.

Here's what TMZ reported earlier:

Tom Brady proposed to Gisele on a private jet on XMAS eve -- and she said yes. Our sources say Brady, who is famous for his QB skills and running errands for Gisele, proposed on a private jet that took off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and landed in Boston. There were four dozen white roses on board, as well as champagne. Along with Brady and Gisele were her parents. We're told Brady was nervous before he popped the Q.

Here's what the Herald said today:

Yesterday, we noticed, Gisele’s hands were free to haul medical equipment because - neither was encumbered by a diamond ring!!

That may throw cold water on gossip site TMZ.com’s breathless report Friday that Tom popped the question to Gi on a private flight to Boston on Christmas Eve. The site said that No. 12 surprised his No. 1 with four dozen white roses and was quite nervous before the proposal.

Gisele’s twin sister and a source close to the Patriots star both told the Herald the rumors of wedded bliss just ain’t so.

I'm sure we'll find out what's really going on over the next week or two. Especially if the March wedding rumors (here) are true.

MA Contestants on Brody Jenner's "Bromance"

12/26/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Remember that casting call back in June for Brody Jenner's new reality show called "Bromance" (here)? Well it looks like a couple of guys from the Boston area made it on as contestants.

It was bound to happen eventually. Brody Jenner, previously on the periphery of other people's reality shows ("Meet the Kardashians," "The Hills"), finally has his own: "Bromance," airing on MTV on Dec. 29. And, of course, there are a few made-in-Mass. contestants: 24-year-old Luke Verge, of Medford, and 24-year-old Mattapoisett resident Gary Vaughn who compete with seven other dudes to become Bruce Jenner's son's new BFF. The winner gets to join Frankie Delgado and Sleazy T in Jenner's Hollywood entourage and takeover his LA penthouse for a year. Both locals report they had a good time on the show, though they had to live in a dilapidated house in East LA. "It does get heated, but I did make some good guy friends," said Verge, who hung out with Mainer Alex Romanoff.

What's with all these shows where people compete to be best friends with someone? Paris Hilton had her show, now Brody Jenner. Good luck to Luke and Gary. Hope it all works out for you.

The Governess to Start in January?

12/24/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
I just saw the tiniest of tiny blurbs on JLo's upcoming movie The Governess (here). It wasn't really even a blurb. It was a two sentences within a blurb. According to those sentences, filming will start "next month" which I'm assuming means January since the article was from 12/15.

It could be awhile before Southie gets to see "What Doesn't Kill You," the fine first film by favorite son Brian Goodman. The distribution division of Yari Film Group, which produced the movie starring Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke, has been forced into involuntary bankruptcy. The action, which company CEO Bob Yari attributed to a "perfect storm" of financial factors, casts doubt on the future of "What Doesn't Kill You," which was released Friday in LA and New York. Yari Film Group is also producing "The Governess," which was supposed to start shooting with Jennifer Lopez next month in Boston. Yari said in a statement that his company's distribution and production arms are distinct, and work on "The Governess" is going forward as planned. Goodman, who grew up in South Boston, spent several years trying to make "What Doesn't Kill You," an autobiographical tale of two boyhood friends who become small-time crooks. Well received by critics at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film screened in LA and New York for awards consideration. Goodman did not a return a phone call yesterday.

Hatteras Hotel Filmed in Rockport & Gloucester

12/24/2008 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
Oops. Sorry folks, it looks like I missed a movie filming in Rockport and Gloucester called Hatteras Hotel. It filmed starting early November and ran for about a month in to mid-December.

Filming for “Hatteras Hotel,” a movie featuring “Prison Break” star Wade Williams, started on Monday, Nov. 10 and will run until mid-December. Hatteras Hotel is one of a long list of movies filmed in Rockport, including “Stuck on You,” “The Proposal,” and “The Edge of Darkness.”

The murder mystery is about a Boston police officer, Williams, who becomes a sheriff in a fictional New England town called Salem Harbor, according to the pop culture blog Loaded Gun. Williams’ first case is to investigate the murder of a teen found dead after a night of partying at Hatteras Hotel.

Most of the movie will be filmed at Emerson Inn by the Sea, which was chosen to represent the fictional hotel.

My bad. I had a Globe blurb clipped out and saved from early December but had overlooked it until now. Also, I haven't anything about this filming at all. Most of the buzz lately had been on either Edge of Darkness or Bunker Hill.

Holiday Recipes from Boston Restaurants

12/23/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
The Globe has a special article featuring recipes from some well-known restaurants in the Boston area. Restaurants included in the mix: Scampo, Henrietta's Table, Ashmont Grill, Petit Robert, and many more.

I just finished browsing through the recipes and now I'm drooling. I would start with the Charcoaled venison racks with risotto of pear and taleggio from Scampo (page 12). Then I'd wash it down with the Liquid Chocolate from Clink (page 18) and then finish the meal off with the Country Apple Tart from Finale (page 19).

Delicious.

Virgin America to Fly from Boston to CA - 2/12

12/22/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Starting February 12, Virgin America is going to bring service from Boston's Logan Airport to San Francisco and Los Angeles and prices are starting as low as $149 one way.

Beginning on Feb. 12, the start-up, which boasts neon-lit cabins, power outlets, and touch-screen entertainment systems at each leather seat, will face stiff competition as a newcomer in the ultracompetitive Boston air travel market.

Virgin will also compete with JetBlue, which said yesterday that it plans to temporarily reinstate once-daily Boston-San Francisco flights between May 1 and Sept. 8. JetBlue had suspended or canceled plans to start year-round nonstop service this summer between Boston and San Francisco, San Jose, and Los Angeles International airports, though it still flies to smaller airports within an hour's drive to each.

Virgin America is doing for air travel what Bolt Bus and Mega Bus did for us for bus travel to NYC. All I can say is Welcome! And I hope they live up to their expectations.

With cheaper non-stop flights to SF and LA, I may just have to drop in more often to visit my sister as well as the tons and tons of friends that fled Boston for warmer climates.

This actually works out well because I'm anticipating to a wedding in SF next October and would love to try Virgin out. Then again, I wouldn't mind another trip to Napa and French Laundry in the near future.

Clearing Sidewalks of Snow

12/22/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Quite a bit of snow we're getting in Boston. This email reminder was sent to me today regarding the removal of snow from sidewalks and who's job it is to do it. It's good to know, especially if you're a property owner or retailer:

It is the property owners / retailers responsibility to clear the sidewalk of snow.

During a storm , please continue to shovel the sidewalk and also place pellets or sand on the sidewalk. After a storm , the City of Boston ordinance states that all sidewalks needs to cleared of snow 1 hour after a storm.

Please also clear handicap ramps, and fire hydrants!
If a sidewalk is not shoveled , you can call 617-635-4500, Mayor' s Hotline. Property owners will be fined if a sidewalk is NOT shoveled.

The City of Boston is responsible to clear the streets.

House of Blues Coming in Feb 2009

12/20/2008 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
The long wait for the House of Blues is coming to an end soon. The space formerly occupied by Axis and Avalon will reopen in February of 2009. It has probably been three to four years since I've been to Landsdowne Street. I'll have to add it to the list of places to swing by the next time I take a stroll through Boston.

The wait is over. House of Blues is returning to Boston in February 2009 with a new larger location across from Fenway Park at 15 Lansdowne Street. The venue will feature a full service restaurant, 2400+ capacity concert hall, retail store and the exclusive VIP membership club, Foundation Room®. The original House of Blues closed its doors in Harvard Square just over 5 years ago and will always be credited for launching the definitive live music brand which now totals 13 clubs across the country.

I first blogged about this project in June of '07 when the tentative name for the project was still the Landsdowne Street Music Hall (here). Six months later, it was purchased by the House of Blues (here) and the finish line is finally in sight. Tickets go on sale today for their first set of concerts.

Gipsy Kings (2/20)
BB King & Buddy Guy (2/22)
Jimmy Eat World (2/26)
The Disco Biscuits (2/28)
Flogging Molly (3/10)
The Pogues (3/21)
Cut Copy (3/22)
John Brown’s Body (4/25)
Dropkick Murphys (3/13-3/17)

I think my picks would be the Gipsy Kings, BB King, and the Dropkick Murphys. A couple of my friends are big fans of Jimmy Eat World so hopefully they're reading this otherwise they're gonna miss out. Just kidding, since I'm a nice guy, I'll probably email them to let them know.

Area Code T-Shirt - 617

12/19/2008 03:20:00 AM 0 Responses
I saw this on Thrillist earlier in the week and thought it was pretty entertaining. I have a couple of novelty t-shirts that I like to wear. One is a shirt that has a picture of Texas and says "Everything's Bigger in Texas." The other is a Tootsie Roll Pop T-shirt with a picture of Mr. Owl on it.

Anyhoo, it's been a few years since that area code song came out, but if anyone wants a 617 area code t-shirt. They're avaiable a company called Mike James.

And from one of my favorite shows, How I Met Your Mother, a quote from Barney:

She's 5-1-6! She might dress like she's 7-1-8, act like she's 2-1-2, but trust me... she's 5-1-6! Oh and her husband letting her out alone on St. Pattie's Day, if that dude's not 9-7-3. I'm 3-0-7!

New Office Building In Front of Prudential Center

12/19/2008 03:02:00 AM 1 Response
I'm going to have to walk by the Prudential Center area again to check this out. In my mind right now, I can't picture enough free space to build another tower over there.

Boston Properties got the go-ahead on Thursday to build a 422,000-square-foot office building in front of the Prudential Center on Boylston Street. After a 17-month permitting process and heavy public opposition, Boston Properties will construct a tower standing 242 feet high. Residents and community activists lined up on Thursday in one last-ditch effort to thwart the project. Boston Properties originally proposed a building 265 feet tall, but reduced the height in response to neighborhood concerns.

I'm curious to see where this Tower is going to be in relation to the Prudential Center and the new Mandarin Oriental. Seems like it's going to get a little crowded over there.

I liked "The Departed" - it was a great movie. Although, I liked the original Hong Kong movie that it was based on better (Infernal Affairs). Looks like we might be getting another mob movie courtesy of Graham King, the producer of The Departed.

Does the world need another Boston mob movie? Graham King thinks so. The producer of "The Departed" is making a movie based on the life and times of John Martorano, the onetime enforcer for James "Whitey" Bulger's Winter Hill Gang. Martorano was an executioner for the mob, killing 20 people over a decade. But when he learned that his associates, including Bulger, were government informants, Martorano flipped and began cooperating with the feds, exposing ties between the mob and the FBI's Boston office. A former altar boy and high school football star, Martorano ultimately served 12 years in prison. He was released in 2007. According to Variety, which first reported the movie deal, King met Martorano through Thomas B. Duffy, a former state police detective who was a technical consultant on "The Departed" and "Edge of Darkness," the Mel Gibson pic that just wrapped filming here. "When I first met John, I was struck by his unyielding sense of loyalty to those close to him," King told Variety. "John has had a complicated life and it will be a fascinating story to tell the world." Martorano turned 68 on Saturday and is living in the Boston area.

Should prove to be an interesting movie. And hopefully it'll be filmed locally. Now that Edge of Darkness has wrapped, we've got Bunker Hill in full swing, but no movies. I'm still waiting to hear news on J Lo's "The Governess." It should have started filming by now.

Vintage Blue: A New Women's Vintage Clothing Line

12/18/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
I got an email Liza, a Boston native, regarding a new clothing line that she's launched called Vintage Blue. The press kit she sent me says that the company is Philly-based but we won't hold that against you - once a Bostonian, always a Bostonian.

We are launching with our first collection based off of our exclusive license to The All American Girls Professional Baseball League featured in the movie A League of Their Own starring Madonna and Tom Hanks. Right now our line consists of organic tees and totes printed with graphics inspired from the 40’s and 50’s

Vintage Blue not only uses eco-friendly products but uses only chemical free printing methods, and uses sustainable methods in all business practices including print material (when necessary!) and hang tags and promotional products. Vintage Blue also donates 5% of each online sale to kiva.org, an organization that supports entrepreneurs, like ourselves, but in developing countries.

As always, I have great respect for those that venture off to launch their own startups. Good luck, Liza! Hope things go well for you.

You can find the Vintage Blue tees (here) or exclusively at Bodega, 6 Clearway St , Boston Ma 02115.

Cambridge Makes Top 10 Most Sexually Active Cities List

12/17/2008 12:01:00 AM 2 Responses
I actually heard about this list on a recent episode of Chelsea Lately - I find Chelsea Handler pretty entertaining. Some website called QualityHealth put out the rankings for the Top 10 Most/Least Sexually Active Cities in America. Like all these other lists I always read about, I always wonder about how they actually calculate these things. Here's what they have to say:

... if Census Bureau birth rates and A.C. Nielsen data on contraceptive sales are any indication. We've also factored in statewide birth and fertility rates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Amazon.com city-by-city sales of books about sex, and sales from several nationwide erotica outlets.

And here's what they say about Cambridge - who made #10 on the list:

10. Cambridge, Massachusetts. This academic hub, which houses both Harvard and M.I.T., is also the city with the most relationship savvy: 58 percent of its romantic Amazon.com purchases are books about relationships. Cambridge's lower-than-average birth rates kept it from earning a top spot on our list, but it's interesting to note that in 1991 Massachusetts became the first location to institute a statewide condom availability program in its high schools.

Some of our neighbors didn't fare so well. Providence, RI; Monteplier, VT, and and Manchester, NH made the bottom of the list.

PS. For those of you that want to know who made #1, it was Denver, CO.

Nespresso Opens on Newbury Street

12/17/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
They were still doing some last minute touch ups yesterday, but as I walked by today - it looks like the new Nespresso store on Newbury (between Arlington & Berkeley) is open or at the very least close to it. What's Nespresso you ask? I had to look it up myself:

Nespresso is the brand name of Nestlé Nespresso SA, an operating unit of the Nestlé Group. Nespresso products are based on a proprietary system of single-serving "capsules" containing ground coffee, and specialized machines to brew espresso from the contents of the capsules. Capsules are available in a wide range of coffee varieties. The company is based in Paudex, Switzerland and has about 2,500 employees worldwide. Its machines are sold through retail channels, while the capsules are sold online and in about 175 "coffee boutiques" in 30 countries.

My old office used to have the Keurig machine in the lunch room. Free coffee paid for by the company, but we still ended up doing Starbucks runs on a daily basis. But now with the recession and all, Starbucks has been hurting badly, so I assume folks are back to brewing coffee at home and at work.

Haven't gotten your tickets for the Christmas Celtic Sojourn yet (here)? Want a free preview of what the show is going to be like? You're in luck. The Trinity Church is hosting a free lunchtime performance of selected parts of A Christmas Celtic Sojourn with Brian O’Donovan.

A Celtic holiday tradition is back in Boston for its 6th year and this year for the first time A Christmas Celtic Sojourn’s Boston engagement will include a special performance at Trinity Church. On Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 1:00pm, The Church will host an abbreviated lunchtime performance featuring musical and spoken word pieces from the show. With Brian O'Donovan as the captivating host, the show brings Christmas to life while featuring traditional Celtic masterpieces. Although the performance is free, donations will be collected for Project Bread.

Unfortunately for me, work has been ridiculously busy lately, so I won't be able to step out during early afternoon to check out the show. But for those of you that have some free time - perhaps you just finished all your finals or you've started your winter vacation early - be sure to swing by and check it out.

Are You A Student? Join Student Advantage

12/16/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
I was broke when I was a college student. So, I was always looking for a way to save a few bucks. One method that worked out quite well was the Student Advantage card. There were a handful of discounts that I used fairly often namely: Amtrak, Armani Exchange, and Urban Outfitters.

I don't actually wear stuff from either of those clothing stores, but what I'd do is purchase stuff that was on sale, use the additional 10%-15% off SA discount and then resell the clothing on Ebay. It was a nice little gig for a short while.

There's also discounts at Karmaloop, Target, and a whole lot more. The card only costs $20 for a year.

My roommate spends several hours a day on Facebook. As a result, I've recently started spending more time on Facebook as well. It gets quite addictive and you end up checking up on your friends and your friend's friends and so on and so forth. There's a great XKCD comic strip about Facebook, and it's funny because it's true.

Anyway. If you've got a Facebook account, join the Beantown Bloggery's Facebook group - it will increase my self esteem dramatically.

Tom and Gisele Go Ring Shopping

12/16/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
So the latest rumor aside from the March wedding (here) is that Tom and Gisele are disagreeing on what type of engagement ring to get.

Gisele Bundchen says size doesn't matter. Ring size, that is. Over a recent lunch, the supermodel told pals that she and fiancé Tom Brady went shopping for a wedding ring — and ended up squabbling because he wants his ladylove to have a giant bauble. So what's the problem? Gisele says she'd be content with something "antique-looking and understated." Now that's your model of the perfect woman.

A little quick googling turned up another article from October where In Touch claims that:

the NFL quarterback "snuck into" Cartier in Beverly Hills and checked out a five-carat yellow diamond engagement ring. The gem is claimed to be flanked by two triangular diamonds with a $145,000 price tag.

Fairmont Battery Wharf Opens Today

12/15/2008 12:08:00 AM 0 Responses
For those of you that haven't been following this story, the hotel used to be a Regent until they pulled out (here). Luckily, the Fairmont came by and took over. A friend of mine works for one of the companies involved with the construction of the new Fairmont Hotel @ Battery Wharf so I actually got to take a tour a few weeks back - it's pretty nice in there. Oh, and it opens today - at least part of it.

Despite challenging times, the new Fairmont Battery Wharf, with daily room rates starting above $400, won't be scaling back on services or amenities even though travelers are clamping down on expenses.

The $300 million luxury hotel and residence development will open in phases, with 45 guestrooms available on Monday and the rest at the end of January. Bookings have been "wonderful," Sterne said, with more than 70 percent of next week's available rooms reserved.

$400 a night is a bargain I suppose when compared to the Mandarin Oriental which I think is $700 and up.

DTown Crossing Filene's Project Loses Condos

12/15/2008 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
More bad news for the big Downtown Crossing redevelopment project at the former Filene's building. First there was the construction halt due to the financing issue (here). Now, it looks like the condos are getting cut from the project.

The developer of a $700 million tower on the former Filene's property in Downtown Crossing is reducing the building's height by seven floors and dropping plans for 166 condominiums to resolve financial problems that halted construction last month.

It would include 285,000 square feet of retail space, with Filene's Basement on four floors beneath street level and additional stores on its first three levels. It would also include a 280-room hotel on floors one through eight, along with a 125-seat restaurant. Floors nine through 32 would consist of office space. An underground parking garage is being scaled back from 299 spaces to 150.

It's a shame they have to get rid of the condos. It would be a really convenient location to live.

1000 Words - Bunker Hill @ Union Oyster House

12/12/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Well, the Globe answered my question about what time they were filming at the Oyster House earlier this week (here).

It was barely 10 a.m., and Donnie Wahlberg was sitting at the bar drinking beer. The New Kid nuzzled a young redhead and then joined a few friends for a game of darts. Welcome to "Bunker Hill," the TNT pilot that began filming yesterday inside the historic Union Oyster House. Owner Joe Milano said the cast and crew pulled up at his place at 5 a.m., and went right to work. "It's kind of like a carnival," whispered Milano, watching Wahlberg and Maria Thayer tape the bar scene. "Bunker Hill," which is being produced and directed by Jon Avnet, is about a Charlestown cop, played by Wahlberg, who returns to Boston to serve and protect his peeps. He costars with Brian Dennehy and actress Bridget Moynahan, better known as Tom Brady's girlfriend before Gisele Bundchen. (Bridget wasn't in the scenes shot yesterday.) In addition to the Oyster House, the pilot's being shot in Charlestown, Chelsea, and at the Tobin Bridge. Avnet, who worked with Wahlberg on "Righteous Kill" and "Boomtown," told us he isn't bothered at all by Boston's frigid weather. "These wimps from LA," the Brooklyn-bred director said, motioning to others in the room. "I like to watch them shrivel up in the cold." Also on set yesterday was Walon Green, the screenwriter whose credits include "Hill Street Blues," "Law & Order," and "NYPD Blue."

Wellesley To Get New High School Building

12/12/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
When I was in highschool, there were two highschools in my city. After my senior year, they decided to build a third one, just in time too - my graduating class was 1644 students. There were over 1800 of us before a bunch of folks turned 18 and dropped out of school. After building the third school, the average class-size dropped down to about 1000 - much more manageable.

When I saw the headline about Wellesley building a new highschool, I thought it was the same case. But it's not. They're building a new one to replace the existing highschool.

Wellesley voters yesterday overwhelmingly approved an $86.6 million debt exclusion to fund a $130 million new high school, the largest capital project in the town's history.

Babson said the project would move forward "right away," with a permit hearing tomorrow before the town's Zoning Board of Appeals. Babson said the ground-breaking could start as early as March 2010 and construction could be complete in late 2012.

So what's going to happen to the old highschool? I hope the land gets put to good use. Also, if I remember correctly, Newton is building a new school right now and it's costing over $200mm. $130 million might not be enough.

Nickelback Tickets on Sale 12/13

12/12/2008 12:01:00 AM 2 Responses
I enjoy the new Nickelback album. It's pretty catchy. Well as luck would have it, they're on tour and coming to the Worcester DCU Center on March 5, 2009 and tickets go on sale tomorrow - Saturday 12/13.

Nickelback is going to be performing with Seether and Saving Abel. I haven't heard of either of the other two bands, but Nickelback themselves would be pretty worth it.

Time to kick it old school. Just a word of warning, be sure to pay attention to the presale password, I cut and paste it out of the emails that I receive to remove any risk of mis-typing but apparently someone misread it for the Britney presale and was a bit upset (here).

The Presale starts on Friday, December 12 @ 10:00 AM and ends at 10:00pm the same day.
