Mohegan Sun To Open New Casino

8/28/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Ok, so the state of MA is really falling behind. Are we going to get some casinos at some point? Because we're losing a lot of gambling revenue to CT.

This reminds me of a situation back home (in TX) when Frisco opened up a mall just over the border from Plano. All the teenage kids rushed to the Frisco mall and abandoned the ones in Plano. As a result - all the sales tax revenue from Plano kids went to Frisco. Not a good situation.

Anyhoo, Mohegan Sun is planning an expansion:

The 64,000-square-foot Casino of the Wind includes a 42-table poker room, more than 650 slot machines and 28 table games. The new space is the first phase of Mohegan Sun's $925 million expansion, which will include a 920-room hotel and more stores and restaurants when finished in 2010.

Mohegan Sun is reintroducing poker, which it discontinued a few years ago, as the game has grown in popularity in recent years. Its first major poker tournament is planned for October.

More casinos to choose from and the reintroduction of poker - sweet.

Edge of Darkness Scene Filmed at WGBH

8/28/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
As you already know, Edge of Darkness (look for the yellow EOD signs) is filming this week in the South End near Boston Medical Center (here). Where were they filming prior to that? According to the Globe they were at a WGBH studio.

"Edge of Darkness" director Martin Campbell's movie crew took over WGBH's Studio B recently, filming a Boston police press conference and an interview for a fictitious talk show called "Inside Washington." Sadly, staffers said Mel Gibson and Robert De Niro weren't in the scenes. . . .

I wonder where the stars were at? Filming a different scene elsewhere probably? South Boston? Chelsea perhaps?

Edge of Darkness Filming in the South End

8/27/2008 12:01:00 AM 2 Responses
As you can tell from some of the recent comments left in main Edge of Darkness post (here) they're filming near the Boston Medical Center. For those of you that are curious and want to check it out, be on the lookout for the "EOD" signs up in the area. According to the commenters, you should check out the following area:

They're filming all around Boston Medical Center: Harrison Ave and Albany St between Brookline St and Mass Ave.

I also got an email from a friend of mine who's a med student at BU and he confirmed the same thing.

Mel Gibson was at Boston Medical Center today and is supposed to be here for the next few days. One of the security guys at BU said they would be at the loading dock ... wherever that is - most of the time.

There you have it folks. If you're looking for something to do with your last week of summer, go do some star-gazing.

Tips on Flying Business to Asia

8/27/2008 12:01:00 AM 2 Responses
Just a word of advice to those of you out there that travel a lot on business. If you ever need to fly to Asia, be sure to get a travel agent that specializes in Asia to help you. And shop around as well, not all travel agents are created equal.

When I went back to Hong Kong in January, I used a local travel agent to help me look for tickets and ended up paying about $6800 to fly business on JAL from JFK to Hong Kong. It was a lot better than anything I could find online by myself.

Fast foward to this week. I went to the same travel agent, she said I could fly Northwest and it'd be about $5600. I decided to ask one of my business associates for his travel agents contact info and guess what, I'm flying Northwest and I paid $3800.

Moral of the story - shop around. And definetly use a travel agent. When I went on the NWA.com website myself, I tried getting a price quote on the website for business class to HK and it showed up as $11K. Insanity.

Oh and just my own opinion, if i had to rank the quality of airlines - JAL and Cathay Pacific would definitely be at the top. American carriers are not nearly as good (ie: Continental or Northwest).

Official Low Car Diet Results

8/27/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
Remember that Zipcar Low Car Diet that I participated in earlier this month (here)? Well the official results are in reports the Boston Business Journal.

Car sharing business Zipcar Inc. said that the results of its “low-car diet” experiment - in which the company challenged 300 people to live without their cars for one month and rely only on public transportation - has resulted in money savings as well as weight loss for the experiment’s participants.

About 58 percent of the participants said that they plan to live without a personally-owned car, and another 31 percent said that they are considering the same commitment. The survey also reported another benefit: 40 percent of participants reported that the “low-car diet” caused them to lose weight because of all the extra biking and walking they did.

Unfortunately, I didn't lose any weight, but it did make me do an analysis of just how much I'm spending on my car. It's pretty painful (here).

Kings of Leon Ticket Sale - 8/22

Sorry guys, I dropped the ball on the pre-sale for this concert. Although I find it kind of unfair to send me an email at 3:00pm saying that the pre-sale starts "now" and ends at 10pm. 24 hours notice would be nice.

Anway, I doubt the concert sold out since the pre-sale only lasted about seven hours - so you'll probably have a good chance when the public sale starts at 10am EST today.

Vote To Get Rid of Income Tax?

8/21/2008 12:01:00 AM 7 Responses
This is what I get for not following politics at all. Apparently, there is going to be a vote to get rid of the state income tax!!

On Election Day, Massachusetts will vote on whether to eliminate its state income tax. Advocates hope victory in a place long thought of as a free-spending liberal bastion will pave the way for similar initiatives in other states over the next few years. Critics insist a yes vote would lead to fiscal disaster.

The issue is whether to erase the state's income tax in two phases. The 5.3% tax would be sliced in half next year and then disappear entirely the following year. Advocates of repeal are hoping for support from voters worried about tough economic times and angered by bloated government spending. Six years ago, a similar proposal attracted 45% of the vote.

This is awesome! Obviously I support this. Remember, I'm from Texas where they don't have income tax. It never benefited me since I had no income while I lived there - then I came here and got hit with the double whammy. From what I'm told, they make up for it in Texas by having higher property taxes.

This creates another question I've always wondered about. Why should homeowner's get tax breaks that us renters don't?

Trouble With Downtown Crossing Development

8/20/2008 12:39:00 PM 3 Responses
Looks like the developers that are redoing the old Filene's building in Downtown Crossing have hit a snag.

The $650 million redevelopment of the historic Filene's building - which Mayor Thomas M. Menino envisions as the new center of downtown Boston - is struggling because the developers have been unable to raise financing.

Well, hopefully they'll be able to work something out and raise the funding. We don't want a big gaping hole in the ground - we already have one of those in Chinatown (after they razed the building that used to house the Glass Slipper)

What can we expect to see once it's finished?

Hynes and Vornado are proposing to build a 38-story tower with retail on the first four floors, 250 hotel rooms over eight floors, 475,000 square feet of office space, and 166 condominiums on the top 12 floors. The project also includes a grocery store and about 300 underground parking spaces, according to filings with the city.

A grocery store would be awesome. And underground parking too. I would hope that it would help to lower the price of parking in the city, but since there is new housing coming along with the parking - they'll probably just cancel each other out.

Tribute to James Brown Tonight - 8/20

8/20/2008 10:16:00 AM 0 Responses
Happy Hump Day Everyone! I can say with absolute certainty that I will not be doing anything tonight. I've had late nights and early mornings every day this week so far and I'm ready to pass out. Tonight's plan will be: run 4.5 miles after work, eat dinner, veg out in front of the tv, then go to bed early.

But, for those of you that are looking for something to do, here's what I'd recommend. There's going to be a Tribute to James Brown concert tonight at the MFA.

To celebrate the legacy of the Godfather of Funk, James Brown, the legendary Pee Wee Ellis (Van Morrison's sax) and Fred Wesley (Funk trombonist extraordinaire of Ray Charles and Van Morrison) have formed a pan-continental soul/funk supergroup.

This incredible lineup includes JB Horns alumni, and special guests Cheikh Lo (from Senegal) and Vieux Farka Toure (Malian singer/guitarist). Who: James Brown Tribute, Cheikh Lo, Vieux Farka Toure
Where: The Museum of Fine Art: Calderwood Courtyard, Boston MA When: Two concerts: August 20th at 6:30pm and 9:00pm

Have a good time tonight kids. This old man needs a nap.

Edge of Darkness," the cop drama about to start shooting here with Mel Gibson and Robert De Niro, has three new cast members: Danny Huston, newcomer Bojana Novakovic, and Shawn Roberts. Filming starts later this month. . . .

Contrary to what the Globe said, I believe they're already filming. Based on an earlier comment from Bloggery Reader "Closer to the Edge" we were informed that they're already filming in Roslindale (here).

Welcome to Boston to all the new cast members!

We of Massachusetts Love Our Beer

8/19/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
I'm more of a bourbon man myself, but I did also pick up a case of coronas recently for apartment guests. And while we're on the topic of bourbon, I just recently opened my bottle of 20 yr old Pappy Van Winkle's - it's DELICIOUS. Anyhoo, on to the news article.

Massachusetts beer shipments ran counter to the national trend in June, as the Bay State reported a 3.8 percent rise in barrels sold for the month. Nationally, shipments fell 2 percent to 19.5 million barrels, from 19.9 million barrels in May. National shipments were off 1.5 percent year-over-year in May. In Massachusetts, beer vendors shipped 412,000 barrels in June, compared to 397,000 barrels in May. The state’s shipments were down 1.2 percent in June on a year-over-year basis.

The article didn't have any data for July, but I'm sure we kept it up. Although a lot of our serious beer drinkers (aka college students) are typically gone for vacation during the summer, warm weather in Boston is more than enough reason to celebrate with a couple drinks. Especially if it would stop raining.

Did You Buy Anything This Weekend?

8/18/2008 12:44:00 AM 1 Response
This past weekend was the annual tax free weekend (here) in MA. I swung by the Natick Mall on Saturday and the Prudential/Copley Mall on Sunday to see if folks were out and about shopping. I also had a lil bit of shopping to do myself.

Overall, the malls looked relatively empty. But there were a few stores that had more traffic than usual. The top 3: Sears, Apple, and Louis Vuitton.

Folks at Sears were shopping for appliances like fridges and washing machines. The line was OUT THE DOOR at the Apple store in Natick. They actually set up ropes. I guess it makes sense since their products never go on sale. May as well save the 5%. And lastly, Louis Vuitton was a mad house today in Copley - again stuff that never goes on sale so I guess you take what you can get.

Stuff At Night - Boston Photo Essay

Thanks to Bloggery Reader Sandy for the heads up about the latest issue of Stuff@Night. It's been almost a year since I blogged about the filming of "The Women" (here). That was one of the first movies that I started covering. Well, I just saw the trailer for it on the Apple site. I believe the movie is coming out some time in September.

As usual, I played the "what can I recognize" game and let me tell you, it wasn't much. Obviously the scene with the poodles barking at eachother was right outside of the Brooks Brothers on Newbury Street. Does anybody recognize which mall all those scenes were done in? Maybe Bloomingdales?

Anybody out there recognize any other scenes?

Zipcar Low Car Diet Results

8/14/2008 11:22:00 AM 1 Response
Well, the Low Car Diet is over and it was pretty interesting. I just filled out the exit survey and it really made me think about how much I'm spending on my car. When you look at the math, it is pretty absurd.

Car Payment: $400 a month
Parking Garage: $300 a month
Car Insurance: $100 a month
Gas: $100 a month
Tolls, Repairs, Etc: $100 a month

Total Car Ownership Costs: ~$1000 a month

Renting the Prius for 3 Hours: ~$40 bucks

All I can say is ... OUCH!

In terms of other aspects of the low car diet. I didn't walk much more than I usually do. But, I basically went from never riding the T to using it whenever I did some grocery shopping or going somewhere that I would normally drive (that was T accessible).

In the end, I most likely won't give up my car. For the time being I can still afford it. But it has got me thinking because $1K a month is no laughing matter.

Click (here) to read my review of the Zipcar experience.

PS. I've got another reservation for the Prius this Saturday. Barring any gas issues, I'm hoping for a smooth ride.

Speed’s Hot Dogs in Details Magazine

8/14/2008 10:52:00 AM 1 Response
I love street food, especially in Hong Kong - man that stuff is delicious. The problem is in Asia many times the street food may be cheap, but the hepatitis A is free.

Those of you out there that went to MIT will agree that the food there was awful and it wasn't one of those all you can eat cafeteria's so you paid a la carte and it was expensive. A cheaper/better alternative was eating at the food trucks that would pull up to campus each day. Mine was a diet of Goosebeary's or falafel every day as a student for several years.

Fast forward to today, Details magazine has a feature on some of the best street food around the country and a place called Boston Speed's Famous Hot Dog Wagon made the cut.

Boston Speed’s Famous Hot Dog Wagon or Speed’s Hot Dogs Sausage virtuoso and keeper of unpredictable hours Ezra “Speed” Anderson brings shame to the dirty-water dogs sold elsewhere around the country. Since 1975, inside a trailer he parks in an industrial lot in Roxbury, the eightysomething former DJ has been charcoal-grilling mass-produced franks that have been marinated in a mixture of apple cider, spices, and brown sugar (blessedly, he grills the buns, too). Then he slathers them in homemade chili, sweet relish, mustard, and a barbecuelike “special” sauce. Ketchup is not on offer—Speed thinks it’s kid stuff. 54 Newmarket Square, 617-839-0102

It's been a while since I've had a hot dog. The last one I had was probably from the Costco food counter. This does sound good though, might be cause for a field trip.

PS. To all those BU Medical people that I've been hanging out with lately. Speed's is a couple of blocks south of ya'll - go check it out and report back.

Mel Gibson Likes to Party

8/13/2008 12:50:00 AM 0 Responses
So Mel's in town and he's been taking part in a little bit of Boston Nightlife. The Herald reported that Mr. Gibson has so far swung by Mantra and Kings.

The Aussie actor, who begins filming the big-budget thriller with Robert De Niro and Bojana Novakovic Aug. 18, checked out the rockin’ weekend scene at Mantra in the Ladder District to hang with his 25-plus production posse.

Earlier, Mad Max made the scene at Kings Lanes in the Back Bay, laced up the ugly bowling shoes and attempted to roll a few strikes.

Also, we hear Mel, who plays a Boston homicide detective in “Edge,” broke for lunch during rehearsals the other day and treated some of the production types to a pub meal at J.J. Foley’s in the South End.

Keep your eyes peeled, if he likes to hang out as much as it appears, chances are good that you'll be able to see him at one of the clubs in Boston this Fall.

He sponsor some parties. If Brody Jenner can make $10K an hour, who knows what Mel can make (here). That kind of money is probably couch cushion money for him, but he could always donate it to charity. Note to self - set up a Beantown Bloggery Charity ... jk.

1st Annual Naukabout Music Festival - 8/16

8/13/2008 12:33:00 AM 1 Response
Happy Hump Day Everyone! Like usual, we're halfway through the week, so I'm already thinking about the weekend. For those of you that are looking for a little getaway, I'd recommend you head to Cape Cod for the first ever Naukabout Music Festival.

Naukabout, a lifestyle clothing company that offers active/lifestyle/casual clothing for men, women and children, is excited to announce their 1st Annual Naukabout Music Festival of Cape Cod, to be held at The Barnstable County Fairgrounds on Saturday, August 16th, 2008, at 12:30pm. Tickets are $24 online, $30 at the gate.

The one day, rain or shine outdoor event will be raising money for The Elias Fund, a non-profit organization that provides hope and opportunity to Zimbabwean youth. The festival will feature the music of The Rustic Overtones, Braddigan from Dispatch, Ryan Montbleau Band, The Old Silver Band, Barefoot Truth, Tin Can Tele, The Pete & Mike Band and Jim Decatur. Also featured will be Cisco Brewery, Peak Brewery, Island Merchant BBQ, The Burrito Bus, Hyannis Ice Cream, Bear Naked, BBC Chowder and much more.

Key words to pay attention to here: music, beer, and ice cream. What more could you possibly ask for? I just checked the weather and it looks like it's not supposed to rain on Saturday, so take advantage of that and head over to the Cape. God knows we could use some time outside without the rain.

Who's Filming in Chelsea Right Now?

8/13/2008 12:29:00 AM 6 Responses
I received an email from Bloggery Reader Scott asking the following:

Do you have any idea what's filming right now in Chelsea, MA, at a warehouse-turned-studio off of Webster Ave? This location has seen past filming for the Pink Panther sequel, 21, and one of the films Jennifer Garner is working on. Right now the parking lot is jammed with production trucks, set construction crews, and cast trailers.

Off the top of my head, I have no idea, but someone out there knows - we're counting on you to fill us in. Anyone know who's filming in Chelsea?

8/12/2008 12:01:00 AM 0 Responses
There was a two page spread today in the Globe on all the ways that you can "get in on the action" with all the movies that are being filmed in the area.

Thanks to tax credits that are making it more attractive to film in Massachusetts, the area is becoming a hotbed of moviemaking. Eight movies already have been at least partly filmed here in 2008. Zane Lamprey Was Here for Zanecrawl

8/12/2008 12:01:00 AM 1 Response
I cried for hours yesterday after coming back from NH and then reading the Names section of Saturday's paper. One of my favorite new shows right now is a show called Three Sheets on the Mojo Channel where comedian Zane Lamprey travels the world drinking the local drinks throughout the world. All over the world, and he was in Boston the one weekend that I'm gone. Bah!

Comedian Zane Lamprey, host of the drinking show "Three Sheets" on MOJO HD, kicked off Zanecrawl yesterday, a $1,700 three-day, all-booze/buses/hotels-included extravaganza for 30. The partyers started with a timed chug-a-lug contest against Lamprey and Steve McKenna at the German bar Jacob Wirth and planned to hit the Black Rose and a few other pubs before ending the night- none too sober, we imagine - at Cheers.

Zanecrawl is moving to Chicago next month, I'm tempted to sign up for it and fly out there if I get chosen. Huy, Tbrant, OB, et al - you should all sign up NOW!

Funky Bunch Comeback Tour?

8/11/2008 10:49:00 AM 1 Response
Remember when Mark Wahlberg went by Marky Mark? Seems like a lifetime ago. Well, according to the Globe, the Funky Bunch is going to try to make a comeback.

New Kids on the Block aren't the only Boston boys making a comeback. The Funky Bunch, whose droopy-jeaned frontman is the A-list actor known as Mark Wahlberg, are also reuniting and, with any luck, will be playing a few dates this fall with NKOTB.

"The goal is to drop our single and get on tour," said Scott Ross, who's back with original FBers Hector Barros and Terry Yancey. "We're bringing 1990 back." (In fact, it was 1991 when the band had its first and last No. 1 hit "Good Vibrations.") Ross said Wahlberg, a.k.a. Marky Mark, has a hand in the reunion, but he's staying strictly behind the scenes.

The new single, called "Let's Party," sounds like the old stuff, but updated. "It's more Timbaland-ish, if that makes sense," he said, "more club-ish." The band is shooting a video for the song this weekend, and getting ready to take its show on the road. "We're older dudes now," said Ross. "But we still got it."

It's not really a reunion if Mark Wahlberg doesn't perform too, right? But, he's probably too busy with Entourage - speaking of which I just said the commercial for the new season yesterday - it's going to be awesome.

Biggest Mansion in Back Bay Being Built

8/11/2008 10:37:00 AM 3 Responses
Well not so much being "built" as it is being "renovated." I do admire this guy's dedication, though, he's been collecting individual condo units for the past 10-11 years so that he can take two entire buildings and join them into one big mega-house. Impressive feat.

Nemirovsky began acquiring his properties in 1997, according to public records of deeds, buying one of the 25 Exeter condos for $2 million, and another for $554,000. By January 2007, he owned both buildings, spending about $13.55 million in total, according to public records. The renovation cost is listed on the permit at $9.75 million.

So I know what you're wondering, "What does $23MM get you these days in Boston?" The answer is: 15 bathrooms, six parking spaces, and 24,000 square feet of living space.

The house's luxuriant features include an atrium bordered by a glass walkway and railings, according to building plans filed with the city. Each of three children's bedrooms has its own bathroom and dressing room. The master suite has "his" and "hers" studies, dressing rooms, and bathrooms.

There's more: an elevator, a sitting room, living room, parlor, media room, family room, exercise room, upper lounge, an "eat-in study," a 27-foot, oval-shaped library, and an office for the house manager.

I'm at a loss for words. Part of me is wondering if this guy got the memo on the recession. Another other part is thinking he worked hard for his money, so he should be able to do what he wants with it. And the last part of me is thinking I should mind my own business - but I can't help it since the Globe put it in print.

8/08/2008 01:59:00 PM 1 Response
So the topic of bike riding came up yesterday as I was hanging out with some of my friends and I revealed that I do not in fact know how to ride a bike. So, you won't see me at this event tomorrow night, but it does sound like fun.

The ride starts downtown and winds throughout the city---ending as the sun rises over Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park. This year's route is new and will include many of the city's historic sites when the hour and darkness offer riders freedom on otherwise crowded city streets.

Meet in front of Trinity Church in Copley Square, Back Bay, at 11:15 p.m., Aug. 9; ride goes until dawn on Aug. 10
Cost: FREE (although you will need to fill out and sign a liability waiver before the ride begins)

--Bring a bicycle equipped with lights and wear something reflective; helmet recommended.
--PLEASE BRING A SPARE INNER TUBE THAT FITS YOUR TIRES.

Everybody Wants To Be Italian - Filmed in Boston

8/08/2008 01:02:00 PM 0 Responses
Looks like I completely missed a movie that was filmed in Boston. Although IMDB says it was filmed in 2007, so if it was filmed during the first half of the year, I hadn't started this blog yet - so it's not my fault. =)

Coming out in September is a movie called Everybody Wants to Be Italian - I just happened across the trailer on the Apple website and it the entire trailer screamed Boston (The North End to be exact).

Here are a few of the things I recognized: Cafe Vittoria, one of the Churches, Mike's Pastry, the esplanade. The whole trailer is like walking through the North End - it's pretty fun to watch. Lots of scenes with the characters wearing Red Sox gear. I'm sure you guys can identify more of the scenes than I can.

Here's the youtube version of the trailer below:

There's a better resolution version on the movie's official site (here) - which uses the Boston skyline as their background.

Jetblue Ending 2 Flights to CA in September

8/08/2008 11:14:00 AM 0 Responses
Bad news. On top of all those news stories that we've been reading about how airlines are charging for luggage, they're charging for pillows, airfare is going to skyrocket, and so on and so forth - they're also cutting routes.

Jetblue, which is by far my favorite airline to fly (except for maybe Singapore Airlines or JAL) just announced that they're cutting two of their nonstop flights from Boston into CA.

JetBlue Airways Corp. plans to disclose today that in September it will eliminate nonstop service between Boston and San Francisco and San Jose, Calif., due to rising fuel costs.

JetBlue's twice-daily nonstop flights between Boston and Oakland will continue after the San Francisco route stops on Sept. 3 and the San Jose trips end Sept. 16. The carrier also plans to reveal today that in December and January it will offer a second daily flight between Boston and San Juan and a once-daily flight between Boston and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Who needs California, I'd rather go to Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic anyway - it's a shorter flight too.

Wang Theatre Signs Deal With NY Firm

8/08/2008 10:51:00 AM 1 Response
Citi Center which manages a couple of the theaters in the theater district signed a deal with a NY company in hopes that it would help them to combat the current deficit that they're dealing with.

Audiences can expect to see more rock concerts, the arrival of Cirque du Soleil's family production "Wintuk," and return runs of the "Radio City Christmas Spectacular," which replaced Boston Ballet's "Nutcracker" in 2004.

The two entities signed a 10-year deal yesterday to share revenue on productions and concerts staged in the 3,600-seat Wang Theatre, which Citi Center manages.

Has anyone seen Wintuk in NYC? Is it any good? I've been a little disappointed with the past couple of Cirque shows that I went to. I've got tickets for Kooza which should be coming to Boston in the next month or two and I'm still hoping to see O in Vegas one of these days. Everytime I'm there, I'm either too busy or tickets are sold out.

8/07/2008 12:15:00 PM 1 Response
It's almost impossible to watch tv and not hear one of those Bernie & Phyl's commercials - with that cute little jingle. Well, here's your chance to sing your own rendition and try to win a car. Bernie & Phyl's is hosting a Video Jingle Contest.

The grand prize winner will drive away in a brand-new 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid. Individuals are invited to create and submit an original 30-second video of themselves singing the retailer’s trademark jingle: “Bernie and Phyl’s, quality, comfort and price, that’s nice!”

Creativity is encouraged and participants have until August 31, 2008 to submit their video on the Bernie & Phyl’s website www.bernieandphyls.com. A panel of judges will select 10 finalists from all the submissions. The public will then have the opportunity to vote online – from September 15, 2008 to October 8, 2008 – for their favorite video. The grand prize winner, based on the video that receives the most votes, will be announced on October 13, 2008.

Food Prices Are Going Up ... Except For Lobster?

8/07/2008 10:46:00 AM 0 Responses
I guess I'm lucky that I'm only feeding one person, because groceries sure are getting expensive. But there was an article in the Globe last week that mentioned that since lobster is a luxury-type food, demand is down - everyone needs their bread and milk and OJ.

Last year at this time, Boston-area lobstermen were getting $5 to $5.25 per pound, according to the Massachusetts Lobstermen's Association. This year they're getting only $4.50 a pound. That's translating to lower retail prices.

The harvest has been plentiful, yet demand has declined, say those in the industry. Consumers view lobster as a splurge, and with money tight, it's not a priority on the shopping list.

I haven't shopped for lobster to cook at home in a while, but I will be on the lookout once I have a free weekend to do some cooking. I'll be spending the weekend at a lakehouse in New Hampshire, so maybe we can pick some up there and bbq.

Just be wary of the tomalley (here). Wouldn't want you to get sick, even if you got a good deal on the lobster. The medical bills would make it not worth it.

Homemade lobster mac & cheese ... sooo good ... and much cheaper than it costs in a restaurant.

Official Bret Michaels After Party - 8/7

8/07/2008 10:28:00 AM 1 Response
Ever have one of those dreams where you're running around and everything is going wrong and you're all stressed out - and then you wake up and you don't feel rested at all? That's what last night was like. ugh.

Anyhoo, Poison is playing tonight at the Bank of America Pavillion and the Hard Rock Cafe is hosting the official after-party. According to the metro, Bret Michaels will be in attendance for the after-party.

I've seen a few commercials for Rock of Love (his reality show) and if tonight's after party is even half as crazy as an episode of that show, you're gonna want to be there to watch.

The party starts at 11pm.

Just Say No ... to Tomalley

8/06/2008 12:34:00 PM 0 Responses
This makes me sad, I'm one of those people that eats all the parts of a lobster.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning the public to avoid eating tomalley in all American lobsters because the green stuff - which functions as the liver and pancreas - can have dangerous levels of the toxin that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning.

Routine sampling of lobsters in Maine and New Hampshire turned up the high levels which are not believed to affect lobster meat and probably stem from an outbreak of red tide in Northern New England and eastern Canada.

Interesting to learn that the green stuff is actually a lobster's "liver and pancreas." I just figured it was brains or something. Must be the zombie in me. mmMmMM....brains...

Anyhoo, I guess I'll be avoiding lobster tomalley for the time being. Not that I eat lobster very much to begin with. Time to surf the FDA website and see what's up.

8/06/2008 12:27:00 PM 0 Responses
I think when I heard the first advertisement for this they marketed it as "the original Harold & Kumar" which I found amusing. For those of you that haven't heard, Cheech & Chong are getting back together. This has been the year of comebacks: Spice Girls, New Kids on the Block, now Cheech & Chong.

Anyhoo, the duo will be performing in Boston on Friday, Dec 12th at the Orpheum and pre-sale tickets go on sale tomorrow morning Thurday 8/7 at 10am EST. The pre-sale only lasts 12 hours, and ends at 10pm tomorrow night, so get your tickets fast.

The presale password is: fans

Forbes' Best States For Biz - MA Gets Low Scores

8/06/2008 06:00:00 AM 0 Responses
I need to dig up my latest issue of Forbes and read the article, I have a stack of magazines that I subscribe to that I haven't had time to read yet. Anyway, I caught this little tidbit off of the Boston Business Journal:

The Bay State ranked 36th on Forbes Magazine’s most recent annual “Best States for Business” rankings, well behind the likes of Virginia, Utah and Washington. When it comes to business costs, growth prospects and overall economic climate, Massachusetts ranks among the worst in the country.

All of which drags on its overall rating on the Forbes list. The state ranked 36th on the last year’s list as well.

Well at least we're consistent. 36th last year and 36th this year. The states were ranked on the following categories: Business Costs, Labor, Regulatory Environment, Economic Climate, Growth Prospects, and Quality of Life.

Who was at the top? Virginia, Texas, and North Carolina. I can attest to the fact that during my 18 years in Texas, several large companies relocated their headquarters there I'm assuming because of the business friendly environment. Off the top of my head: JC Penney, Frito Lay, Dr. Pepper, and the list goes on.
