Boston/Cambridge is known for their educational institutions. Most recently Le Cordon Bleu opened up a culinary school in Cambridge (here), and now Elan Sassoon (son of Vidal Sassoon) announced plans to open something of his own:

The Academy for Hair and Skin by Elan Sassoon is a 90,000 square foot, $22 million school planned on Commonwealth Avenue near Boston University.

The school, which will have 180 dorm beds and a 200-seat auditorium, will require 1,500 hours of cosmetology training over nine months to graduate, 50 percent more the 1,000 hours required for a state license.

The $19,500 tuition makes it one of the nation's most expensive such programs.

I don't have too much of an opinion on hair care, since my hair is pretty simple to cut. So a question for those of you that do like to go to nice hair salons. Do you know where your hair stylist went to school? And would it influence your decision to go to him/her if she went to a "famous" hair school?

I'm just wondering because I go through the same thing with doctors. Of all the doctors I've been to (which is a handful), I have no idea where any of them went to school except for the oral surgeon that removed my wisdom teeth - he was pretty chatty and mentioned that he'd gone to Harvard.

  1. Dan Dan Said,

I've noticed the same thing with my doctors. Even as someone in medicine, it wasn't until I was applying to med school myself that I realized my GP is a DO not an MD. And I still have no idea where he went to school.

But, with all of these things, I'm betting that people take notice (or you make sure they notice) if you went to a top notch school. At least, I hope...

  2. Anonymous Said,

When I lived in LA, I always went to the Vidal Sassoon Academy to get my hair done. The students who come from all over the world are great and are supervised by top stylists (teachers). I have never had a bad experience, and you cannot beat the price. Color and cuts for under $30. I hope this new facility offers these services as well!

  3. Anonymous Said,

That is an excellent point! Where have our professionals had their training? I have had a few bad experiences with hair cuts. I'm sure I will be asking this question in the future.
