Update: Taxis Using Fast Lane

6/09/2008 08:00:00 AM
I was just wondering about this last week when I was coming back from Chicago. I hoped in a cab after getting off the plane and as we approached the toll, the taxi driver went into the cash line. It was after June 2nd, so I was curious as to why the driver didn't use his Fast Lane - he had one fixed to the windshield (here).

Boston cabdrivers, however, have been required to have the Fast Lane pass - which they get for free - since 2006, so they can quickly pay tolls electronically. But state transportation officials estimate that only 20 percent of taxis have been using them.

Last week, police began waiting at the airport tollbooths, handing out warnings to cabdrivers. Multiple warnings will cost drivers a one- to five-day suspension of their taxi license.

Within the article, it talks a little about how one of the hurdles for the taxi drivers is that they don't have credit cards to set up accounts but that the Turnpike Authority is working on this.

We'll see what happens after my trip this week to Richmond.
