More Ways to Get to NYC - MegaBus

3/20/2008 02:20:00 PM
Can anybody explain to me how these discount bus lines make money when they charge $15 per ticket? I've tried doing the math and I can't figure it out. Assuming a full bus load (56 people for a Lucky Star bus) that's $840 dollars. I'd guess gas costs at least $200 to get a huge bus like that to New York and let's say the driver gets $10 an hour for the 4 hour drive. That leaves $600. I'm assuming they have to pay something to South Station and I'd hope that they have some sort of insurance to cover accidents/injuries. And then there's all the other employees on the Boston and NYC end that man the ticket booths. How much profit is left at the end of the day? Bear in mind, not all buses are full when they leave.

Anyway, another company MegaBus, a subsidiary of Coach USA, is working on being the next low cost bus service between Boston and NYC. Like BoltBus (here) they're going to have a tiered price structure for tickets ranging from $1 to $14.

MegaBus service is scheduled to start May 30th. Buses will have wifi, but no electrical sockets. None of it will really help me anyway, I've found that these busrides are way too bumpy for me to use my computer. I end up getting carsick (or should i say bus-sick?) really fast.

Stay tuned for my reviews of all the busing services once they all start running. I used to ride Fung Wah, but after all the safety issues - I've been riding Lucky Star lately. Once BoltBus and MegaBus are up and running, I'll give them a shot and then report back.

  1. Will Said,

It looks like we hit market saturation. Now which provide will drop out of the game first? This is my version of a death pool.

I'd say one of the wifi ones are out first.

    Hi sheirin i,
Nope, it's true. In order to compete, Lucky Star announced today that they're also going to be offering $1 seats like BoltBus and Megabus. More to come on that news when I get a little more time to compose a new blog entry.
