Barack Obama Coming to Boston - 12/2

11/30/2007 11:18:00 AM 1 Response
Calling all politically-interested people. Barack Obama will be in Boston this Sunday 12/2, I guess to give some sort of speech or something. As you can tell, I don't have a political bone in my body so I have no idea.

Anyhoo, the event is called Countdown to Change and it will be held at the Park Plaza Castle (Address Below)

130 Columbus Avenue
Boston, Massachusetts

I did watch the Republican Debates this week while I was working in my hotel room. I found it highly unhelpful to see the candidates being asked questions like "Mr. Giuliani why were you rooting for the Red Sox after the Yankees lost?" No offense guys, but what does that have to do with anything? I want that hour of my life back.

Click (here) for details on Obama's rally and also to pay/donate the $23 admission fee.

Lonely Maiden Filming on Newbury Today?

11/30/2007 11:03:00 AM 1 Response
Anyone know if the Lonely Maiden will be filming some where on Newbury St. today or not? I saw these pictures as I was walking to work today.

I snapped these shots on Newbury St. inbetween Arlington and Berkeley. I'm assuming that they're filming somewhere close by and this is where they're going to break for meals. They might not be on Newbury specifically, but where there is food there are people.

If you're looking for moviestars, roam around downtown before 6pm and maybe you'll see some. The Lonely Maiden stars: Morgan Freeman, William H. Macey, and Christopher Walken.

Linkin Park in Manchester, NH - 2/18

11/29/2007 04:16:00 PM 0 Responses
This is huge news. I was kicking myself because I wasn't able to go to Projekt Revolution, but now Linkin Park is touring on their own - even better!

Tickets go on sale this upcoming Saturday 12/1 at 10am EST. You can be sure that I'm going to be on my computer at 9:55am pressing F5 until the screen pops up.

The only downside is that the concert is Feb 18, which is a Monday. I really really hope that I won't have to travel for work on that day. But for now, I'm going to pick up tickets and hope for the best.

Click (here) for the link to Ticketmaster. If you're a member of the fan club and are willing to share the presale password with me - PLEASE EMAIL ME!

Sweeney Todd In Theaters This December

11/29/2007 03:25:00 PM 0 Responses
Did you miss your chance to see the musical Sweeney Todd while it was in Boston? I did too. Fret not, there's a movie version coming to theaters soon - Christmas-time.

There's a few things about this movie that have already put it on my "To Watch" list: Tim Burton directing, Johnny Depp acting, and the overall revenge plot line. I love revenge movies - righting the wrong - that type of movie.

My favorite book (the movie was ok) is the Count of Monte Cristo. It has to be the pinnacle of revenge movies. But it goes beyond just killing your enemies. Edmond Dantes spends decades transforming himself from a poor sailor into the Count of Monte Cristo before stripping his enemies of everything. The best scene from the movie arrives in the end when his enemy Fernand is stripped of all his riches, his wife, and then it's revealed to him that even his son is not his own. Utter destruction. What goes around comes around right? He deserved it.

This is basically what happens to Sweeney Todd as well. A corrupt Judge gets him thrown in jail so that he can marry Todd's wife. Sweeney Todd comes back as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street to exact revenge on those that ruined his life.

I'll be home for Christmas which makes it even better. The stadium seating in TX is way better than it is Boston. w00t. If you want to see the trailer or get any additional info, visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace or you can also visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site.

City of Boston's Official Tree Lighting - 11/29

11/28/2007 03:43:00 PM 0 Responses
Coming up tomorrow (11/29) is the 66th annual Tree Lighting on Boston Common. With Thanksgiving behind us, it's time to look ahead towards Christmas. But then again, stores have had Christmas stuff up since after Halloween.

The holiday decorations throughout Boston Common and The Public Garden, including the City's official Christmas tree, a 45- foot white spruce donated by Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Hamilton of Granville Center, Nova Scotia, will light up in sequence when Mayor Menino throws the switch with Santa Claus. The annual holiday display includes over 80 trees throughout Boston Common. The celebration on Boston Common will feature performers from Novembera Scotia and New England with WCVB TV- 5 providing live coverage of the festivities hosted by Mary Richardson and Anthony Everett.

There will be food, beverages, and live entertainment. Immediately following the Common tree lighting, Mayor Menino will join Back Bay residents at Arlington Street for the lighting of Commonwealth Avenue Mall.

Drowsy Chaperone Presale Tix

11/27/2007 06:45:00 PM 0 Responses
I'm not much into musicals, but I just saw Wicked about 3 weeks ago and I have to tell you, it was AWESOME. That makes two musicals in my entire life. The other musical I saw was Ragtime in 11th grade.

Right now, a presale is going on for tickets to "The Drowsy Chaperone" which will be playing in Boston from 4/22/08-5/4/08. Two weeks only, so if you're interested, here's your chance to get the good seats now.

No presale password this time, just a secret link. You'll need to register with the website in order to qualify for the presale. Where's the secret link you ask? Right (here).

A totally original new musical within a comedy. The most 2006 Tony Awards of any musical on Broadway, and the New York Drama Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards for Best Musical! A rare combination of unprecedented originality and blinding talent, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE boldly addresses a great unspoken desire in all of our hearts: to be entertained. If You've ever sat in a darkened theatre and thought, "Dear Lord in heaven, please let it be good," this is the show for you.

North End Caffe Graffiti To Close Soon

11/27/2007 04:41:00 PM 1 Response
This is nuts, I was just at Caffe Graffiti this past Saturday and there was no indication whatsoever that it was closing. According to an article in the Globe a couple of days ago it could close "as soon as Friday."

So the close date is up in the air? Any regulars at Caffe Graffiti have the inside scoop on when it will really close down?

Damien DiPaola, the landlord is expected to start a restaurant at that site now that he's sold his other restaurant: Carmelina's (in Hadley).

He said he now wants to operate a smaller restaurant with about 40 seats in the bustling North End. He's planning a tapas-style menu, with small samplings of Italian cuisine served from morning to late night.

Well, my advice to everyone is to assume the worst and that it's closing this Friday. If that's the case, hurry down there and have a cappuccino and some hazelnut gelato before it's too late. First Bob's Southern Bistro closes, now this. Oy. Click (here) to read the article.

NE International Auto Show - 11/28

11/26/2007 10:38:00 AM 0 Responses
Coming up on Wednesday 11/28 and running until 12/2 is the New England International Autoshow. I'm not very big into cars, but I have plenty of friends that are.

The New England Auto Show is an annual showcase of the newest model year import and domestic vehicles -- cars, vans, light trucks and sport utilities. Factory representatives from the car lines are on hand to answer your questions in a no pressure environment. There are cars to suit every budget and life style. With the car lines all under one roof, it's easy to compare prices and features, saving both time and money. The Auto Show is great entertainment for serious shoppers, car buffs and the entire family!

I did go to an Import Car show about four years ago. They had lots of souped up Civics and such. It was fun to see how many tv screens you could fit into one car.

This car show is claiming to have nine football fields worth of cars, hybrids, crossovers, SUVs, vans, and trucks. Along with some new concept cars.

Click (here) to check out the official website and get tickets. Tickets are $12. Click (here) for a $2 off coupon for use from 11/28-11/30. Also, the Globe has a lot of info online as well about this show (here).

The Harbor Towers Nightmare

11/23/2007 08:49:00 PM 1 Response
I've been very anxious to see how this debacle turns out. For those of you that haven't heard about it, there's been some issues with the Harbor Towers on the Waterfront. First off, a little history.

The Harbor Towers apartment complex was completed in 1971 by the Berenson Corporation, as an affordable housing option near Boston's financial district. Designed by I.M. Pei, in conjunction with a local Boston architect, who also collaborated with Pei on the design of Boston's City Hall, the towers are well known in the architectural community. At 40 stories, they are the city's tallest residential towers (here).

The most recent news is that the Harbor Towers needs renovations and they're passing the cost on to the condo owners - $75 million dollars worth. According to a recent article in the Globe, the cost per condo owner is "$70,000 to $400,000 or more each - equaling about 20 percent of the units' market value."

A group of condo owners had banned together to file a suit against the trustees trying to halt the renovations. But a judge has denied the request.

First a disclaimer, I only know what I read in the papers, so my opinions may be a little skewed since I don't have all the facts.

With that said. 20% of the market value?!?! That's a little much don't you think? I'm still saving up my first 20% so I can buy something. Imagine buying your home and then being asked for a second 20%. Nightmare.

Second, don't condos collect condo fees each month? Shouldn't the condo association have years and years worth of condo fees saved up to pay for renovations? I thought that's what condo fees went towards.

From what I've heard, lots of residents are being forced to sell because they can't afford the renovations. But good lord, who would knowingly buy a place knowing that its going to cost an extra 20% on top of the cost of the home in order to have renovations done.

Last question, I promise. Hypothetically, if I owned a $500K condo in the building and then paid 20% for the renovations, would my unit be subsequently worth $600K? Click (here) to read the Globe article.

Here Come Ms. Garner and Mr. McConaughey

11/21/2007 11:12:00 PM 1 Response
Looks like the new tax breaks are successfully attracting movie studio after movie studio. If you read through the comments that folks have been leaving, Cameron Diaz has been out and about while filming her movie "The Box." Most recently, she was spotted at Zen in Beacon Hill with her friends.

Word on the street is that Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey will be in Boston "as early as January." They'll be filming a new movie entitled "The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past"

According to IMDB, the movie is about a bachelor that is haunted by the ghosts of his past girlfriends at his younger brother's wedding (here).

More chick flicks. Aghg. Can we please shoot an action movie here?

Dear Paramount: Please film Transformers 2 in Boston.

PS. Megan Fox is hot.

Dr. Huxtable Coming to Boston

11/21/2007 11:14:00 AM 0 Responses
Any other folks out there a product of the 80's like I was? Watching the Cosby Show was a nightly ritual for me and my family. And compared to the shows today, it was definitely clean entertainment. My childhood was a whole lot of Cosby Show and Full House. Speaking of Full House - one of the Olsen twins is now on Weeds (Showtime series) playing a marijuana smoking church girl. Just another sign of how times have changed.

Anyhoo, Bill Cosby is on tour and he's coming to Boston for two shows on Saturday, March 1st at the Opera House. According to the Ticketmaster site, it looks like it will be a family-appropriate show.

Evening performances are recommended for ages 6 and up. Matinee performances are all ages.

Click (here) to get tickets for the 5pm show or click (here) to get tickets for the 8:30pm show.

Has anyone seen Bill Cosby perform live before? I'm trying to decide if I want to go or not. Any experiences you guys have had would help. Thanks.

Car Insurance Prices To Decline

11/20/2007 06:55:00 PM 2 Responses
Good news, I saved a bundle with Geico. That's what I'm hoping I'll be able to say in about six months. If you haven't been keeping up with the news, the state has been working on a plan to switch to a competitive auto insurance as opposed to being fixed by the state (which it has been for the past 30 years).

This is huge news, so huge it was on the front cover of the Globe today. According to the article, auto rates will be cut on average of 7.7% New rates go into effect April 1st of next year. See below for average premium reductions by company.

Not everyone is going to get a decrease though. If you're a terrible driver (or just an unlucky driver) and you have lots of tickets/accidents. Your rates will probably go up.

Rates are locked in by next Tuesday, so it may be worthwhile to call your insurance company after the holidays to see what's going to happen to your rates. Also, the article states that no new insurance companies have entered the mix yet, so my lil statement about Geico earlier may hafta wait a bit longer. Click (here) if you'd like to read the article.

Dear Warren Buffett, if you're reading this, please tell Geico to come to Massachusetts sooner rather than later. Thanks.

Harbor Garage To Be Redeveloped

11/20/2007 06:42:00 PM 0 Responses
You know that seven-story parking garage near the New England Aquarium? It was on the market a few months ago and now it's been sold. Developer Donald Chiofaro has agreed to buy it and he's going to tear it down.

In its place, he is most likely going to build "a large complex of offices, residences, and a hotel." My first reaction was "Just what we need, less parking." But according to the Globe article Interpark (the company that currently manages the garage) will continue to do so and then will manage the new garage once it's built. Underground parking maybe? That would be a plus.

In case you're curious, the price tag was $155 million dollars. Read the article yourself (here).

Holiday Cards for our Troops

11/20/2007 04:17:00 PM 0 Responses
Remember the greeting card scholarship program that I blogged about last week (here)? Well the company behind it: The Gallery Collection, is now working on a project to help support our troops.

This holiday season, they have partnered with Soldiers' Angels and donated greeting cards to be sent to each soldier that wishes them Happy Holidays, Happy New Year and also Thanks. They also included a blank card and envelope for troops to write home with. The cards will be included along with “care packages” sent by Soldiers' Angels.

Honestly, I'm not even sure what we're doing over there any more, but I'm also not reading the news about it: so I am going to refrain from passing judgment. All I want to say is that our troops (friends and family) are over their risking their lives. And I'd like them all to know that I appreciate their service.

Tis the season, I just recently went shopping for holiday cards, ribbon, wrapping paper, etc. If it's getting to cold out to shop, order online - that's what I do. Also saves on gas (I just filled up this past weekend and it was $3.35 a gallo.....AGH). Whether it's corporate holiday cards or personal ones, the Gallery Collection has a pretty wide assortment.

You can learn more (here) about Soldier's Angels and the work they do for our troops. Tis better to give than to receive, so if you'd like to support their work - it's a great time to make a donation.

Letters of John and Abigail Adams - Tonight

Are you a history buff? Or maybe a politics buff? Tonight, there will be a little bit of both at Fanuil Hall. The Massachusetts Historical Society and Harvard University Press is hosting a reading of the letters of John and Abigail Adams by Senator and Mrs. Ted Kennedy, Governor and Mrs. Deval Patrick, and former Governor and Mrs. Michael Dukakis.

Celebration of the publication of a new book of the letters of John and Abigail Adams. This is the first collection of their letters that is selected from the entire forty years span of their correspondence (which coincides with the most important period in American history) and includes several letters never before published.

The event takes place in Fanuil Hall at 7pm tonight. Bundle up, because it's cold out there today.

Cameron Diaz, The Box, and Other Celebs

11/18/2007 06:10:00 PM 13 Responses
Ready for more celebrities in Boston? Filming for Cameron Diaz's new movie "The Box" started yesterday (Saturday 11/17) in Boston.

Based on the Richard Matheson short story "Button, Button," "The Box" focuses on an unhappily married couple (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden) who are visited by a mysterious stranger (Frank Langella). The stranger gives them a mysterious box with a button. If they push the button, they'll get great wealth, albeit with a catch -- when they push the button, somebody they don't know will die. (Here)

According to the Globe yesterday, Ms. Diaz had a stylist flown in from LA and had her hair done at Jean-Pierre Hair Salon on Newbury Street. According to the Globe (here), filming will take place at the Boston Public Library and Milton.

In other news, it appears that Christopher Walken (starring in The Lonely Maiden which I blogged about here) might be staying at the new Liberty Hotel while he's filming here. The Globe reported (here) that he was spotted in the lobby of the hotel wearing sweatpants.

Boston Murder Map

11/18/2007 06:01:00 PM 1 Response
Stumbled upon this while reading the Saturday Globe. Boston Online has created a Google Map that lists all the murders that have occurred in the Boston area for the past six months.

It's quite interesting. Most of downtown Boston is relatively safe in terms of not getting murdered. Dorchester and Roxbury though, are not so safe (we already knew this though right?).

Still, it's pretty interesting to be able to scroll through the map and see what's taken place where.

Boston International Antique Book Fair - 11/16

11/16/2007 01:06:00 PM 0 Responses
The Boston International Antiquarian Book Fair starts tonight at Hynes Convention Center. For those of you that are into old books, this is the place to be. It's funny that this is coming up because just last week I bought a first edition of I am Legend - the book that has a movie coming out soon with Will Smith. If I had known, I would have waited to see what kind of deal I could get at the fair.

The fair is now in its 31st year and also features maps, atlases, autographs, and prints. What I really want is a first edition English version of The Count of Monte Cristo, but the going rate for one of those is $10K.

Over 120 rare book dealers from the United States, England, Germany and The Netherlands are expected to exhibit and sell rare, collectible and antiquarian books, modern first editions, manuscripts, autographs, maps, atlases, and a plethora of other literary ephemera. Fine and decorative prints will also be featured.

Is anyone out there into collecting books? Do they appreciate in value much? What's the most valuable book that you have? Tickets are $15 for the entire weekend or $8 per day. Click (here) to go to the official website for more info.

Patriots Cheerleaders at Clarke's Tonight

11/16/2007 12:55:00 PM 0 Responses
Does anyone out there read Barstool Sports? You know the one, the free magazine that always has a scantily clad woman on the cover? Well I read it - for the articles of course. But up until this past week, I'd never really found anything useful.

This past week though, they did a feature on the Patriots Cheerleaders in their Halloween costumes. I never really paid attention to the cheerleaders, having only watched Patriots games on TV, you don't really see the cheerleaders very much. But, after reading the article, I will admit that some of these girls are quite beautiful.

Click (here) for a link to the article so you can see the girls for yourself. And if you're free tonight, the girls will be at Clarke's in Fanuil Hall from 7pm to 9pm for a meet and greet sponsored by Coors. Beer and beautiful women - what a wonderful Friday night.

PS. The writer for BSS didn't know who Quinn Kingston was dressed as. I'm pretty sure she's dressed as Gwen Stefani.

Greeting Card Scholarship Contest

11/16/2007 12:41:00 PM 0 Responses
This post is for all the college students in the area. If it weren't for scholarships and grants, my loans would be a lot huger than they currently are. In a mere 15 years, I'll be done paying off MIT and will be able to purchase my first born child back.

The Gallery Collection is a company that sells personalized Christmas, Holiday, and Birthday cards in the United States and they're currently running a $10,000 Create-A-Greeting Card Scholarship Contest and they're looking for entrants.

Those of you that are creative/artistic, here's your chance to win some dough for the 'ol college education. Bust out your photoshop skills and enter their greeting card scholarship contest. Go to their site and check out their current selection of Christmas Cards and see if you can design a better one.

$10K goes a long way in buying textbooks and cup 'o noodles. Just remember to have an occasional glass of OJ to prevent scurvy. There was an urban legend going around campus when I was a student that if all you ate was instant noodles - you'd end up with scurvy. Yay for vitamin c deficiencies.

A "Spa" for Men - 379 Club

11/15/2007 02:48:00 PM 6 Responses
Any guys out there get their hair cut at 379 Club in Allston? I read about this place a few weeks ago and the concept was interesting. Basically it's a spa for men. It has pool tables, flat screen tvs, a VIP lounge, and computer stations amongst other things.

Services include haircuts, massages, and "foot and hand detail" (if you're going to get a manicure/pedicure, just own up to it). I haven't gotten to the interesting part yet though.

Here's the interesting part: the club offers a tiered membership program that ranges from $480 to $2200 a year and includes unlimited haircuts. Hmmmm...unlimited haircuts - this could be interesting. I basically get my hair cut once a month (it costs me $35 each time). Pricey? Yes. But I used to get my hair cut at SuperCuts and I came out pissed off everytime thinking to myself "It's ok, it'll grow back in 2 weeks"

So at $35 a pop, monthly haircuts are costing me $420 a year (it pains me to do that math). And at the end of the month, I'm getting scruffy, I'd prefer biweekly haircuts. This would bump me up to over $800 a year, way more than I'm going to spend on haircuts.

So you see where I'm going with this? If that means I can get haircuts every 2 weeks, then it's a better deal than I'm currently getting. The brochure on their website details out the different levels of membership. Just a warning, it's a pdf (here).

I'm thinking about checking it out. If you're interested in more info you can go to their website (here). I warn you though. The website currently sucks - very little information available. They do, however, have a pdf coupon on their site good until December for a haircut and massage for $30.

Rachael Ray Book Signing 11/17

11/15/2007 12:50:00 PM 0 Responses
Many thanks to Missy for letting me know about this upcoming event. Rachael Ray (you guys watch Food Network right?) is coming to the Barnes and Nobles at the Prudential Center this upcoming Saturday 11/17 for a book signing.

The superstar chef, beloved TV host, and best selling author serves up all new recipes for everything from Date Night Dinners to Fancy Fake-Outs in this yum-0 cookbook that includes a super-delish selection of fast and fabulous 15 minute meals.

According to flyers and ads in the paper, the book signing is at 3pm, but if you swing by the B&N at the Prudential Center, you'll see a sign that says they'll be handing out wristbands at noon on Saturday and only folks that have wristbands will get to participate in this event.

So if you want an autographed copy, get there early. I'm not sure if you can get a wristband, leave, and then return later at 3pm. You could try calling the store and asking. Or bring a book with you to read while you stand in line.

Haru: A Review

11/14/2007 03:09:00 PM 4 Responses
Has anyone else noticed that the only restaurants opening in Boston lately are either sushi restaurants or steak houses? Not that I'm complaining, I love myself some sushi or a nice medium rare ribeye. But what ever happened to variety?

We went to Haru this past weekend to check it out. For those of you that haven't been keeping up, Haru (a Japanese chain out of NYC) has taken over the space that was formerly Dick's Last Resort at the Prudential Center. Click (here) to read more about the restaurant.

How was the food? I'd have to say average. I found the menu to be a little short. Maybe I'm too used to Douzo or Fugakyu where the menu goes on for pages and pages. But nothing on the menu really jumped off the page at me.

We tried a couple of the specialty rolls and I have to say that the ingredients they chose to go into each roll just didn't mesh well together. Dear Haru: Please redo your specialty rolls menu.

Lastly, we had a few pieces of nigiri: Salmon, Yellowtail, Scallop, and Sea Urchin. They were fine. I think the scallop was my favorite.

Overall, I was not terribly impressed with Haru. Of the three sushi places in the immediate vicinity (Osushi, Douzo, and Haru) I'm planning on stickign with Douzo. And if you're curious, I'd rank them Douzo, then Haru, then Osushi. Osushi is HORRIBLE. Actually let me rephrase, the sushi at Osushi is HORRIBLE. The drinks are fine.

I haven't tried Oiishi Boston yet (in the South End). Yes, I know its been open forever but I can't bring myself to try it because everyone keeps telling me it's so expensive. It's the same reason I haven't been to O Ya (South Station) yet. I know one of the sushi chefs there and I still won't go, cause he told me "You won't make it out of there without spending at least $100".

Bass Pro Shops Opens Tonight - 11/14

11/14/2007 02:56:00 PM 1 Response
The first ever New England Bass Pro Shops (Outdoor World) opens tonight in Foxborough! I can barely contain my excitement. There are very few retail shops out there that instill me with excitement whenever I go. Ikea is one of them and Bass Pro Shops is the other. I feel like a kid in a candy store.

While you'll find a huge selection of outdoor gear, Bass Pro Shops stores are also part museum, art gallery, antique store, aquarium, education, conservation and entertainment center. The Grand Opening is set for Thursday, November 15th but a special "Evening for Conservation" to help benefit area conservation groups will be held on Wednesday night, November 14th beginning at 6 PM. This exciting, celebrity-packed event is free and open to the public.

Curious about the description? Bass Pro Shops are like Swiss Army Knives. They've got everything. Hehe. You'll just have to see it for yourself. What am I most excited for?

A cave structure surrounds the aquarium, which will be stocked with more than 400 fish native to the area including largemouth bass, striped bass, northern pike, bowfin, giant carp, Atlantic salmon and crappie. Two elevators rise up from either side of the aquarium offering riders a bird's-eye view of the 3-story waterfall. Other water features include a 5,500- gallon-turtle pond and a 3,800 gallon trout pool.

Work has been quite busy lately so I doubt I'll be able to go to the grand opening, but I will definitely be there this weekend. If anybody has a chance to go tonight or tomorrow and will take pictures, I'd love to post them.

Avril Lavigne Concert Presale Password

11/13/2007 09:49:00 AM 1 Response
Hey, hey, you, you, I don't like your girlfriend (I think I used too many commas). Anyway, if you're into teeny bopper music, Avril Lavigne is coming to the Verizon Wireless Center in Manchester, NH on April 13, 2008 and I have the presale password.

Presale starts Today at 10am (in about 10 minutes) and ends on Friday 11/16 at noon. Get your tickets before the general public. I've always wondered if these presales really help with getting better seats, or if they're just a scam to make me THINK I'm getting better seats so I think I'm special and subsequently buy the tickets.

Click (here) for the link to LiveNation. And then use the presale password "guitar"

Lastly, come back here to this post, and leave me a comment to let me know if you were able to score some good seats. I won't be going to this concert mostly because I'm still getting crap for going to the Hilary Duff concert from months ago. Apparently, I'm too old to be listening to this type of music.

The Lonely Maiden Filming Starts Today

11/12/2007 03:55:00 PM 1 Response
So I hopped into a cab this morning to head to the airport and right around the financial district area, I started seeing those neon green cardboard signs with big black letters on them. I'd seen enough of them this summer to realize this meant they're filming a movie somewhere nearby.

So my cab turned onto Summer street, headed into the Seaport District, and lo and behold more neon signs with arrows. The signs bore the letters "LM." I was racking my brains.....perhaps they're doing a "Last of the Mohicans" remake?

Well after a little poking around, I've discovered that the movie is The Lonely Maiden. Filming starts today and stars Morgan Freeman, William H. Macey, and Christopher Walken (here).

"Maiden," written by Michael LeSieur ("You, Me and Dupree"), centers on three museum security guards who have become attached to the artwork they've watched over for decades. When they learn their beloved pieces are to be transferred to another museum, they concoct a scheme to "steal" them back.

So if you're star-hunting, today they should be somewhere in the Seaport District (I didn't get to follow the signs all the way to their destination) and according to a Globe (here), future shooting will take place "in the North End and at Murphy's Law in Southie."

Gipsy King Tix On Sale Tomorrow - 11/10

11/09/2007 10:46:00 AM 0 Responses
The Gipsy Kings are coming back. I feel like they were just hear at the Bank of America Pavilion a month or two ago. Regardless, they're awesome so if you're a fan and want your pick of the seats at their next concert, then this is a friendly reminder that tickets go on sale tomorrow 11/10 at 10am EST.

At this rate, I'm going to be sitting in front of my computer for the first few hours of my Saturday morning. First Gipsy King tickets at 10, then Dresden Doll tickets at noon.

If you're not sure if you've heard the Gipsy Kings before, you have. They're music shows up in background music for tv shows and movies fairly often. Here's a lil tidbit from wikipedia:

Gipsy Kings are a group from Arles and Montpellier in France. Their parents fled from Spain during the Spanish Civil War. They are Calé (Gitano) musicians, best known for bringing Rumba Catalana, a pop-oriented version of traditional flamenco music to worldwide audiences. Their music has been described as a place where "Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk"

Their concert will be held on 2/22/08 at the Opera House. Click (here) for the link to Ticketmaster.

Dresden Dolls Tickets On Sale Tomorrow - 11/10

11/09/2007 10:33:00 AM 0 Responses
I've never actually listened to the Dresden Dolls, but I do like how they get all dressed up as part of their act. I remember a year or two ago, they played at the Paradise Rock Club near BU and there was a huge crowd of fans dressed up as well. It's always cool when you really love a band and can really get into their performances.

I wiki'ed them since I don't know much about them and learned two things. First, they're from Boston - which gives them +12 to their coolness factor. And then there's this little tidbit:

They describe their style as "Brechtian punk cabaret", a phrase invented by Palmer because she was "terrified" that the press would invent a name that "would involve the word gothic," and are part of an underground dark cabaret movement that started gaining momentum in the early 1990s.

So tickets go on sale tomorrow, 11/10 at noon EST at Ticketmaster. They're concert is going to be at the Orpheum Theatre on Dec 29, 2007 (7:30 PM).

As usual, log on at 11:55am tomorrow and keep hitting F5 until tickets go on sale. Click (here) for the link to Ticketmaster.

How To Dress Like Celebrities

11/08/2007 12:10:00 PM 1 Response
I read GQ, and I read Esquire. I see what celebrities wear, and there's no way I could ever afford that type of clothing (nor would I ever spend that much money on clothes). But I've got something better for you and way more affordable: T-Shirts.

Say goodbye to Kitson and hello to Collegehype. First and foremost, apologies to Bloggery reader Rebecca who emailed me about this two weeks ago. It took an article in the Globe to really kick me in the butt and get me writing.

Collegehype is local so their t-shirts mean a lot more to us than that stuff at Kitson (which caters to the Los Angeles celebrity crowd). Collegehype's shirts were: used in Ben Affleck's recent movie Gone Baby Gone, ordered and worn by Curt Schilling during the 2004 playoffs, and most recently worn by Kevin Youkilis (YOUUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk) after our recent 2007 win.

Cellphone Service + The Big Dig

11/08/2007 11:26:00 AM 0 Responses
All I can say is that it's about time. When I had to switch to AT&T, from Verizon (for work) I was bummed out. My verizon phone used to get reception everywhere. AT&T not so much.

One of the biggest issues I had was driving through the Big Dig. Whether going to and from a meeting, or shuttling clients to and from the airport: I couldn't have a phone conversation if I was downtown because I know I'd be cut off.

Now, with the federal clearance, four large wireless companies have told officials with the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority that they will install the equipment in stages, beginning in about two weeks.
The project, which could cost up to $7.6 million, will be paid for by the carriers and be completed within three to six months, the companies said.

These estimates are never accurate, so I'm just hoping by this time next year I'll be able to talk on my phone while driving through the Big Dig.

30% Off Coupon At Puma

11/07/2007 12:34:00 PM 6 Responses
The title says it all. See below for a 30% off coupon for the Puma Friends & Family Event going on from Nov 9th to Nov 12. You can be sure that I'll be scoping out the shoes after work today. I love Puma shoes, I just never buy them because they're kind of expensive. But the pair I'm wearing now is getting pretty worn out, might be time for some new ones.

There's a Puma store right on Newbury (333 Newbury St). And apparently one at the Natick Mall also.

Oh and for all you non-Boston readers. There's a store locater button on the upper left hand corner of the Puma site (here). So to download the coupon, click on it so the larger version pops up, then right click and do a "Save As." If anyone has any problems getting that to work, send me an email and I'll email the file to you.

November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month

11/07/2007 12:12:00 PM 0 Responses
I recently found out that one of the members of my extended family has Alzheimer's. I didn't hear too many of the details, but it's really quite sad to think about what he must be going through: not being able to recognize family members, and even having trouble putting sentences together as words have begun to fail him.

With November being Alzheimer's Awareness month, I'm sure you'll all see inklings of it in the news. Don't ignore it. If someone you know is showing symptoms, it's important to encourage them to go for a memory screening test so that at least you'll know early.

November 13th is National Memory Screening Day, you can click (here) to find a facility that carries out screening tests. And also get some memory and successful aging tips from the Alzheimer's Foundation.

The important thing to recognize is that Alzheimer's Disease is NOT a normal part of aging. People always joke about senility being just a part of getting old. Just because you're getting old this doesn't mean you should be forgetting things.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain's nerve cells, or neurons, resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes.

For more details about it, you can click (here) to get a more scientific explanation as to what exactly happens in the brain when one develops Alzheimer's Disease. For the most recent scientific discoveries click (here) about an article on biomarkers that scientists believe can help to identify Alzheimer's Disease. This is important because if this is accurate, any new drugs developed that can decrease the presence of these biomarkers is a good sign that we can combat Alzheimer's.

You've got about two months to affect your 2007 taxes =), so if you're looking for a charitable donation to make a holiday gift to, perhaps the Alzheimer's Foundation could be the one you choose. Until the day that we CAN cure Alzheimer's, we need to do our best to support groups like the Alzheimer's Foundation and the outreach that they do.

Tom Brady In His Underwear?

11/07/2007 10:51:00 AM 2 Responses
Wow, so I guess this is third hand gossip, but I'll share anyway; because I'm sure there's someone out there that's interested. According to The Globe, In Touch Weekly (one of those celebrity gossip magazines) is reporting that Tom Brady is in talks with Calvin Klein to become their next celebrity underwear model.

Apparently Brady is now cashing in on his fame and signing up for endorsements left and right. He also has deals going with Movado and Glaceau (think vitamin water).

While Brady is undecided, In Touch says his supermodel sweetheart, former Victoria's Secret gal Gisele Bundchen, supports the idea.

I'd rather see Gisele in her underwear. Click (here) for the Globe blurb (you have to scroll down a bit).

Back Bay Luxury Office Building

11/07/2007 10:39:00 AM 0 Responses
Just what we need. Something to make Back Bay more expensive than it already is. Developer Ronald Druker submitted a proposal today for a new nine story luxury office building. The new office complex is to replace the current Shreve, Crump & Low building on the corner of Boylston and Arlington.

According to the proposal, it will be designed by famous architect Cesar Pelli and will be home to: underground parking, a fitness club, a restaurant, retail space, and offices. Expected occupants of the offices? International bankers, hedge-fund managers, venture capitalists, law firms. In other words: $$$$$.

Druker only does high end, so expect rents to be sky-high. Among Druker's portfolio are: Heritage on the Garden, Atelier|505, and the Colonnade Hotel & Residences.

See below for an artists rendering of what it could look like. Or click (here) to read the article in today's Globe.

Continental Moves to Terminal A - 11/11

11/06/2007 11:38:00 AM 0 Responses
For those of you like me who make frequent trips to the airport, this might be good to know. Starting Nov. 11th, Continental Airlines is moving to Terminal A from its original home in Terminal C. Hopefully this means that Jetblue is going to expand some more. I <3 Jetblue.

In 2006, Continental handled 1,177,672 passengers at Logan, representing 4.2 percent of the airport’s traffic. So far this year, the airline is carrying nearly 5 percent more passengers than in the same period in 2006.

Hopefully they make a smooth transition and get the word out quickly, because frequent flyers are creatures of habit. I can already see folks showing up at the wrong terminal out of habit and missing their flights. People will be disgruntled.

Download the FREE MP3 audio walking tour to your personal MP3 player, start the tour at the InterContinental Hotel, and get an insider's view of life along the Fort Point Channel. Check out the filming location of The Departed and meet some of the artists who live in the neighborhood.

Downtown Tour
Enjoy the Harborwalk like never before - FREE OF CHARGE! Members-Only University Clubs

11/05/2007 12:32:00 PM 0 Responses
There's an article in yesterday's Globe that talks about downtown University Clubs. These are member's-only clubs for the mover and shaker alumni in the area to dine. The four universities featured: BU, BC, UMass, and Harvard.

Catering to well-heeled alumni and power brokers, the clubs are popular destinations for business lunches, meetings, and formal functions.

If there's one thing I've learned after joining the workforce, it's who you know, not what you know. And so I ask, why isn't there an MIT club? If there was one, I'd join in a heartbeat. Something about members-only makes it seem exclusive and desirable.

According to the article, membership at the BC and UMass clubs are invitation only. That leaves BU and Harvard. I started doing some research and non-Harvard folks can join the Downtown club (here). And you can get more information on the BU club (here) where half of its members did not attend BU.

Todd English Book Signing - 11/6

11/05/2007 12:16:00 PM 1 Response
Todd English is one of the many famous chef's in the Boston area. He owns several restaurants that I'm sure you've been to: Figs, Olives, Kingfish Hall, Bonfire, etc. On Tuesday 11/6, Todd English will be at the Macy's in the Natick Mall signing copies of Great Gatherings: Star Chefs Entertain at Home.

I'm personally not a big fan of Todd English's restaurants. If it were Barbara Lynch signing book, I'd definitely be there. I love B&G Oysters. I haven't been to her flagship restaurant No. 9 Park yet, but I hear lots of good things about it.

Anyhoo, the event is tomorrow at 6pm at the Home Store area of Macy's on the upper level.

The book is $29.95 and you can find more info on Todd English at his website (here). To see some photos that I took when the newly renovated Natick Mall first opened, click (here).

Brownstone: A Review

11/05/2007 11:28:00 AM 1 Response
For those of you unfamiliar with the South End, there was a mediocre bbq restaurant on Dartmouth street called Prairie Star that in the past year has been renovated and turned into Brownstone. I'd seen advertisements for it in Stuff@Night and some of the other local magazines but had never tried it. Well, this past Sunday, my girlfriend and I had brunch there.

It was the worst meal we've had in years. There were so many problems, I'm not sure where to start: the beginning I suppose.

1. The half and half for the coffee was curdled/spoiled.
2. The cheeseburger pizza appetizer was luke warm and bland.
3. To the waitress: If you're not going to write down our orders, please make sure you get the orders correct. Bringing me the wrong omelette and then staring down at your blank notepad over and over again doesn't fix things.
4. How do you mess up a bacon cheeseburger? My gf's cheeseburger was inedible.

It's partly my fault. The fact that the restaurant was empty should have been an indication to keep walking. Also, I should have checked chowhound first. The reviews there (here) for Brownstone are also quite bad.

To Brownstone: I hope you go out of business soon, so that a real restaurant can take over.

Beauty and the Geek Casting Call - 11/3

11/02/2007 11:22:00 AM 0 Responses
HOLY COW. If I was still in college, I'd totally go to this. But now I have a job and I don't think they'll let me take a sabbatical to be on an Ashton Kutcher reality tv show. Well, I guess I'll have to leave it to all the younger kids at MIT to win.

This Saturday at The Estate, they will be doing a casting call for hot women and geeky men. If you haven't seen Beauty and the Geek (I watched the first season), it's a pretty entertaining show. This coming from someone that doesn't watch reality tv. The show is in it's 5th season now.

I'm pretty geeky, but man, some of those guys they get on this show are off the hizzy.

Where to Watch The Pats Crush the Colts

11/02/2007 11:09:00 AM 1 Response
I have to say that the recent Pats games have been fairly boring to watch. Watching them destroy the Redskins last week really wasn't that enjoyable. There was no suspense. Just touchdown after touchdown.

Of course I'm glad we won, but if I wasn't on a treadmill and needed to distract myself from the fact that I was running (I hate running); I would have switched it off. This weekend's game will be different. The currently undefeated Patriots take on the currently undefeated Colts.

Where should you watch the game? Normally I'd say in the comfort of your own home, especially since Hurricane Noel is going to make life painful for at least the first half of the weekend. BUT, this little tidbit may sway your decision.

The Joshua Tree Bar & Grill in Allston will be hosting the Patriots Cheerleaders Viewing Party from 4pm to 6pm. That's right: cheerleaders + beer + football = happiness.

Premium Denim Sample Sale - 10/6

11/02/2007 10:55:00 AM 1 Response
I still don't really understand the concept of "premium denim." Maybe someone out there can explain to me how jeans can cost $200. They're just jeans. I tried on a pair of True Religion jeans once, I couldn't figure out how they were any different from normal jeans.

Anyway, The Warehouse Sale (which seems to be some sort of traveling closeout sale company) is hosting a premium denim sample sale this upcoming Tuesday and Wednesday (11/6-11/7) at the Castle @ The Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers.

They will be selling: premium denim, dresses, pants, hoodies, sweats for both men & women.

Where: 130 Columbus Ave, Boston, MA

When: Tuesday (11/6) and Wednesday (11/7) from noon to 8pm.

Click (here) for the official website so that you can RSVP and go for free. Otherwise it's $5 at the door.
