Back to School - The South End

9/04/2007 02:28:00 PM
For today's Back to School edition, I'd like to talk about the South End. After having moved out of that neighborhood last year, I hadn't been back in a while - until this past Sunday. I had forgotten how much character and how quaint the South End is. Makes me almost miss living there.

The South End is basically the area south of Back Bay. Although they are the area around Shawmut Street and Washington Street have undergone extensive changes over the last few years, I never really roam south of Tremont Street. In fact, I spend most of my time there (all my favorite restaurants are conveniently located on Tremont).

As you can tell, I really enjoyed all the restaurants on Tremont Street and didn't really venture away from that area very often. Why did I move? I had a car that I had to park in a garage 10 minutes away (Near Back Bay T Stop) and whenever I did park on the street, I had to worry about tickets from street cleaning and parking meters. Also, it was pretty noisy living on Tremont Street - garbage trucks at 5am woke me up almost daily.

But every place has their pros and cons. One big pro for the South End is definitely the food. If there are any other places readers would like me to mark on the map, send me a comment or email.

Amsterdam Cafe - think Ankara's but really really well made sandwiches for relatively cheap.

Icarus - amazing, amazing meal when I went for Restaurant Week, but $$$

  2. Unknown Said,

How much is a 2 or 3 bedroom appartment to rent in that area? How about a 2 or 3 bedroom condo to own?

Trying to figure what urban area of Boston I want to move to (from Dedham) in the next couple years.

    Hi Marc,

Here are a couple of resources that I'd recommend.

Gibson Domain is in my opinion the best real estate company if you're looking in the South End. They handle rentals and sales.

Also, there is a real estate website called Redfin that combines real estate listings with a googlemaps type interface. Many A time i find myself on Redfin clicking and dragging the map around neighborhoods to see how much condos cost in those areas

When I lived in the South End, I paid $2100 for a small 2 bedroom on Tremont St.
