Back to School - Midtown/Chinatown

8/30/2007 11:32:00 AM
I'm trying something different today thanks to advice from reader, Jim. Instead of just posting a screenshot, I'm using GoogleMap's MyMap function to hopefully make the map a little more useful. I've added a few markers, but if you have others you think would be useful, email me and I will add them.

I'm not real estate expert, but to me Midtown is basically the region inbetween Boston Common and Chinatown. The Ritz Carlton is there, a bunch of really expensive condos are there, and the nicest movie theater downtown is located there: AMC Boston Common.

Chinatown is about 4 square blocks bounded by Essex Street and Kneeland Street to the north and south and Washington Street to the west. Chinatown is the home to dim sum, late night dining (after clubbing ends at 2am) and overall great asian food. I say asian because there are several Vietnamese restaurants there and also a Malaysian restaurant as well. Here are some of my picks.

Best Dim Sum - China Pearl
Best Seafood Selection - East Ocean City
Malaysian Food - Penang
My Favorite Restaurant - Pearl Villa

2 other sites that I've noted are:

1 Boylston Place, home to about 4-5 different bars/lounges: Suite, Mansion, Liquor Store, and Gypsy Bar right around the corner. But if you're an incoming freshmen new to Boston, that area wont' really concern you until your junior year.

South Station, a busy travel hub for Boston housing a Red Line T stop, a train station, and a bus station. Read my post on "Traveling to NYC" and you'll find that both the chinatown bus and the amtrak leave from South Station.

  1. Dan Dan Said,

Hey BB. I was meeting a friend from out of town for dinner and he said he was in the mood for Chinese. So I pulled up this post and made reservations for the 6 of us at Pearl Villa. The service was great, the food was amazing, and, judging by the fact we were the only non-Asians in the joint, the food was authentic. There's no chance I would have found the place on my own! Thanks!!
